Bought it a while ago. Lent it to my Mother in law. I'll probably get it back when this starts

Is it ok if I start now as I am a slow reader (and have been out of it for the last several days from having all four of my wisdom teeth pulled 8-19) plus I like to take accurate notes for reflections and quotations for further use in any papers/essays I may write one day.

I sort of wish he'd write an update of this book. Maybe he's done so, or will do so? I'm just on the first page and already thinking of discoveries made in the past 10 years the book won't be able to touch on.
Also, does "half a million years" for humans to be in Western Europe seem an excessive estimate to anyone else? I thought even Neanderthal hadn't been in Europe for more than three hundred thousand. Are we counting them as "human beings"? I'd support that absolutely myself, I'd just like to have a better idea of what was meant. Are we counting other homo ancestors as well...?
The different female figurines are interesting. What are people's thoughts on these? The Venus of Laussel (g) reminds me a lot of the Valkyrie with the mead horn. I'm not sure I agree that because of the amount of effort put into making them, they are obviously not porn. I am sure there are people who would put a great deal of effort into constructing porn. I mean. Look at those doll things.

I'm still struggling over the bad sentence structure, but yeah I was a bit surprised at how far back he was dating things.

too2sweet I'm still struggling over the bad sentence structure, but yeah I was a bit surprised at how far back he was dating things. I didn't see any bad sentence structure myself.

It's more like occasional weird fragmented sentences, but it could be just me though. I was skimming back though to see if I could find an example, and couldn't, so maybe I was just really tired when I was reading it the first time through. sweatdrop

Reading Chapter 2, it's sad how easily misinformation is perpetuated, even when an author puts out new/updated versions of their work, that publishers will still continue to print the older version, because it's more popular.
I do like the book so far, but I'm somewhat amused that he goes on and on about stuff, only to say in conclusion basically that we can speculate all we want, but we'll never really know.

Eh, those conclusions are to be expected in books of this sort. If it ended on any other note I'd probably be taken aback and a little cross; it would be sort of irresponsible. When we're talking about archaeological finds from that far back we don't have a chance of knowing when it comes to beliefs, so all these books really are about is discussing possibilities. I mean even with recon religions, there are so many questions, and we have texts and everything.
I'll get started on that chapter now.
Edit: not too far into it. I liked that he used the word "bellicose" but I'm not far in enough to feel that the chapter is cohesive so far. It looks like it will be looser as far as info goes than the last chapter, so I see more now what you mean, Sweet.

Yay more reading! heart
edit: lol I love all his vaguely snarky comments in this chapter. "Damn those tomb builders for making this so complicated."
