Ashe remembered how she had met him so long ago. The memories, still clinging on. She dreamed, the air was so hot and it felt like she was breathing in flames. She had never dreamed before, not really---she was only a few days old. But the dreams were enough to wake her up, and as her eyes fluttered open she saw this was not a dream. This was real.
The world around her was transformed. Above her, the sky was like a dome of fire. It was mesmerizing, and terrifying. Struggling to her feet, she looked around her. Her brothers, were nestled close to her...but their sides didn't move anymore. She shook them and shook them, but they did not move.
Coughing, she saw her parents unmoving but she did not see Acacia or Aspen, her older brother and sister. She glanced around, knowing somehow that she couldn't help them..she was too small and they didn't seem to be there anymore.
But she didn't know what to do, she'd only ever heard of fire. Enough to know what it looked like and felt like, but not enough to understand it fully. "Help!" Her tentative voice cried out.

The broadly stature stallion patrolled the area; he did this every day and just about 3 hours a part. The young male was quite serious of protecting his family. While heading in a direction he notice smoke up ahead and his eyes slanted with slight concern. He figured it was best he would investigate to see if the fire would get any closer towards his homeland. Lutherian held his head high as he galloped towards the blazing forest.
He watched as animals scattered about in search of refuge. When he was close to the forest he heard a rather tiny voice. His eyes widen and he dashed into the forest in which was a flame at the moment. He looked around and the smoke was heavy making it hard to see.
“Hello?” he called out in a gruff voice.

The disorientation, the voice that called hope to her. She let her mind drift back into memories.
She found herself radiating toward a voice in the smoke. She was coughing and her head felt light and dizzy as she tried to find the voice. Slightly disoriented, she ran into something solid and hit the ground. Jumping up quickly, she nosed forward feeling the skin of someone else. She felt braver already with someone else there, they would know what to do. She knew that she needed to run, but she didn't know where or how to take care of herself or anything.
She looked up, to where she thought his face might be. "My family---I'm alone. I don't know where to go." It pained her, when it came the moment to say it. She was pretty sure they weren't going to come out of this fire. "Can I come with you?" Her small voice asked as she nosed what she assumed was a leg again.

A voice called out to him and he looked around trying to catch a glimpse of the owner of the voice. The smoke was thick and it was rather hard to see. He felt a light nudge to his rather thick leg and his ears twitched.
"Of course!" he swayed his tail before the little one. Looking back down at her; he could barely see her because of the smoke.
"Grab on to my tail and I'll guide you out!" he commanded softly.

It had been that simple. The voice that spoke to her had saved her, taken her in. She let her mind drift back to what happened next.
She nodded her head, realizing he probably couldn't see her in the thick smoke. "Okay," she nodded. She grabbed onto his tail and tugged gently to let him know that she had a latch on him.
The smoke was choking her, but she was holding onto him as best as she could. She knew that if she didn't hold onto him, she wouldn't find her way out. She'd probably never get a name...or well..anything. And she didn't like the smoke, or the way it made it so hard to breathe.

Lutherian kept a fast and yet steady pace for the young one to keep up with him. He looked for an opening out of the dense forest and made his way out. He paused and then looked back to see if the young filly was still with him. He sighed in relief and looked at the forest which was engulfed by flames.
"You alright..?" he sounded rather concerned.

The smothering, the anxiety. But she was okay, and she was alive. But the fear was still there, even after all this time...she could still taste the fear.
She coughed for a long moment, "Okay...Just di-dizzy." She shook her head trying to clear her thoughts as she held onto his tail. Her legs were shaking and she was so tired. "Let's not stop. I'm scared," her voice was softer, frightened. "I don't want to be here."

The usual silent stallion gave a nod and leaded the young filly away from the burning forest. He was debating on if he should bring her to his herd. Though looking back upon the young one he didn’t feel any negative atmosphere.
“I’ll take you back to my herd.” He gruffly said while heading towards his herd which was located by a lake. He wasn’t sure on how his master Swift Wind would take to the young filly but he was sure that the he would accept her. Lutherian was rather silent and rather unsure of what he should say to the young filly. He was pretty sure the young one lost her family in those flames and with every will power he avoided to ask her .

The feeling of the air clearing and seeing him for the first time was something she wouldn't forget. Again, she drifted into the memory.
As the air thinned out, and the flames faded into the background, the foal breathed deeply again before coughing. Letting go of his tail, she scampered up beside him with her long gangly legs. "So who are you?"
She titled her head gently at him, assessing him. "Do I stay with you now?" She knew instinctively it was right. Her family was...gone, so she'd go with him now. She felt a slight burning in her chest and eyes, as she thought of her family. Her eyes filled with tears and she sniffed.
Then a small smile lit up her face, "So what's my name then? You get to name me!" She waggled her cute little tail, jumping up beside him before coughing again.

The armored stallion paused in thought of the young filly’s question. He couldn’t very well leave the young one alone and abandoned. He figured the best thing for her was to take her to his herd and see if they’d be willing to have her apart of it.
“I am Lutherian.” he addressed his name with much pride in his voice.
He shifted his gaze from up ahead to down on the young filly “Who might you be?” he asked her. As they continued walking he raised his head up to glance in the direction of his herd “I shall bring you back to my herd.”

She smiled, remembering when she first learned his name--first heard she'd have a home again.
"Lutherian," she said lightly committing it to memory. "So I'll stay with you and your people then? What's a herd?" She wasn't exactly sure yet what it all was. "I don't have a name. Mom and Dad were supposed to name...us...today."
She looked up at him with liquid blue eyes, "It's just me now?" She sniffed hard for a moment. I won't cry. I won't cry. I won't. "What's your herd like?" She sniffed again trying to focus.

Lutherian kept his rather cool composure; he usually wasn’t the emotional type. Though he felt pity for the young filly and the best thing he could do was lead her to safety. He was pretty sure that Swift Wind would be willing to accept the little one. He couldn’t help but frown when the little filly said she didn’t have a name. He paused briefly thinking of a name or at least something he could call her for the time being.
“No name..” his mind was raking for an idea.
Then it came to him a name which would give meaning. He met the little one in the forest filled with flames and even though her life there was dead it was reborn a new now. He gave the young one a light smile “How about Ashe? Umm..if you don’t like it you could always pick one for yourself.” he said.
“Oh—a herd is basically a family.” he explained.

The first time she had heard that word, her mouth filled with soot--her skin stained dark from the smoke of the fire. Yet, the word was like cool water on her wounds. Ashe. Born of ashes. Something that meant something, and also similiar somehow to the names of her family--though she wasn't sure how.
Ashe wiggled a bit, shaking and causing black particles to fly up off of her. "Like a family?" She tilted her head considering what that would mean. But being as she hadn't had a family very long it seemed kind of --well, she didn't know. But she was rather excited in her own way.
"I like it," she tasted the name on her tongue over and over. "Ashe...Ashe...Ashe. I'm Ashe."
"Why would I want to pick a name? Naming isn't for one's self, it's for other's right? That's what I was told.

He gave her a nod and then continued to walk through the grassy plains. The air was still clouded with smoke from the fire but as they moved further away, they could finally breathe easily. The quiet armored stallion kept at a pace so the young filly could keep up with him. Lutherian wanted to get back to his herd so the young one could rest. When they drew closer towards his herd he could hear some voices up ahead.
Naturally it probably was the oldest mare in the herd. She always had a temper and didn’t exactly get along well with Swift Wind, the herd’s leader. Lutherian sighed and looked back at Ashe with a weary look “Well we are here.”
His ears shifted down at the high pitch voice of Kaim. Shaking his head he headed towards the lakeside herd. He could only imagine what Ashe was thinking with all those strangers bickering in the distance.

Ashe tilted her head gently at the sound of voices from not far away. They were not gentle and soft like her parents, but loud and boisterous like her siblings--especially her two brothers.
It hit her with a jolt that they wouldn't be here, wouldn't experience this. She was alone...Well, that wasn't true. She had Lutherian now. He would take good care of her.
She looked up at him as she followed, tilting her head from side to side to study him with interest. "Why did you save me?" She paused as she tilted her head the other way, "Why were you there?"
