Hania Shen sighed very lightly as he nosed the one grave in the graveyard. He was making his usual rounds and more then that he felt more of the spirits at rest then he had ever felt in a long while. They were all resting soundly inside their graves. He felt good about it. He felt like he did something for the souls that inhabited that spot in the graveyard. He didn’t know what else he was going to do.

“What else around here needs my help..”

He whispered softly in the cool breeze as he began to walk away from the gravesite.

User ImageIt wasn't often that Marla stumbled across a full-blown graveyard, accustomed to the lonely markers made of wood or rock out in the middle of nowhere, those isolated places where creatures retreated to die. But a few steps into the area told a vastly different tale, the spiritual tangles and whorls raising gooseflesh along her spine. Despite the purposeful mistreatment of her mother's inheritance, Marla was hardly deaf and dumb to such bold indicators; and given the strength of feeling in the area, even she couldn't avoid it entirely. Rust-colored eyes narrowed, pausing in her steps as her nostrils flared, as though taking in the smell would help her make some determination. Whatever sixth sense led her to perceive the mass grave in the first place, scenting the air like some idiot predator wasn't doing her any favors. Huffing in vague self-deprecation at the thought, the mare skirted around the area, ears nonetheless pricked beneath her headdress. Just because spirits tended to be on another plane didn't mean precautionary measures were completely wasted. Or that was going to be her excuse, at any rate.

A few more moments of proximity led her to discover that the activity was somewhat hushed, a surprise given the sheer number of dead ticking across her skin. Perhaps it had been a quiet transition for all involved, one devoid of regret. Doubtful, but possible, she supposed. Or else the spirits here were particularly dim. She was distracted from such contemplations by movement coming toward her, soft words borne on the breeze scrambling themselves before they reached her ears. The approaching stallion was pale, a coloration that might have been described as ghostly white by the uninitiated. At the sight of fangs, she nearly slid back into the nearest copse of shadows, not about to risk an encounter with some mad-mumbling Skinwalker. But a few feet of difference made it clear that the fangs weren't protruding from his mouth, that they were attached to some covering that overlaid his equally white face. Marla straightened up, privately irritated at the near-mistake. A mask, nothing more, or at least she suspected that was the culprit. It seemed that everyone wanted to dress up as something other than what they were as of late. Not that she was above all that, she thought wryly, feeling the full weight of her helm with a glimmer of returning humor.

"Talking to yourself is generally regarded as the first step toward madness, I'll have you know," she said with casual derision, a smirk pulling at her mouth. "Unless you'd like to claim you were speaking to me, in which case you might consider upping the volume some."

Hania didn't know there was anyone in the area, but once he heard the mare speak, he turned to face her. She was strange looking, but then again so was he. She had stumbled upon him speaking with himself as well as the other spirits in the area and he didn't know how to handle that. Was he mad? Most would say he was when he told them everything he experiences on a daily basis, but he wasn't mad. He was strange, odd, and possibly a little out there, but in no way was he mad. "Madness is something I do not possess miss. I didn't know you were in the area, so it was not directed at you. Actually I was speaking to the spirits lingering all around us. I am trying to figure out if I should continue with my daily routine or wait until later this evening." He said lightly to her as he looked around seeing no spirits in the are at the moment. Maybe he needed to move on or perhaps her presence spooked them away. "I forgot to introduce myself...my name is Hania Shen. What is your name?" He looked away feeling a presence in the distance making him shift a little bit.

"Do you mind joining me for a walk? My services is needed just further down the road." He nodded as he began to walk down the path. He had obligations and there wasn't a chance in the world he was going to simply ignore them. Whether this mare followed him ore not was strictly up to her. Though he wanted to know more about her. She seemed odd and someone who possibly was like him which only made him more curious. If he in deed found someone with his rare ability, he would want to learn from her. "Are you looking for something or going somewhere? If you are you don't have to join me?" He said to her examining the road up ahead.

He turned at her voice, and for the first time Marla realized that making herself known to him might not have been the best action to take. Pale light burned through the eye sockets of the mask, twin pinhole-sized sparks that regarded her with detached interest. The stallion appeared flesh and blood from where she stood, but there was always the possibility of something other lingering just beneath such a facade. Her amusement flickered, but she held it in place while waiting to see what he might say. If flight turned out to be the appropriate response, she had plenty of practice, and accusations of cowardice tended to sting less than physical injury. When his answer came, it wasn't exactly what she had expected, a mere deflection rather than any additional banter. Whoever he was, he had a decent handle on his temper, she'd grant him that. Mention of the spirits, however, snagged her attention neatly, a faint startle running the length of her body before she could compose herself. Marla checked him over again, a more thorough study this time: she took in the mask that conformed to his skull, noting his bearing and the aimless chatter he had so recently been pitching into thin air. Another medium? It was possible, though she had never encountered one so far afield. Then again, they were currently situated in a graveyard, one complete with markers and a dampening ambience. The reminder calmed her, and a self-deprecating smirk played across her lips. Anyone with half a brain could infer the presence of spirits when bodies were interred nearby. It was a simple extrapolation, even if she was not accustomed to others taking note.

Back on stable ground once again, she found it easy to reply with the same blitheness as before. "I hadn't realized that madness was something one possessed. It seems to be what possesses, more than anything. Then again, I'm hardly an expert on the topic." She was surprised that he bothered to ask her name, given her opening volley. He didn't seem willing to dispense with pleasantries for whatever reason, even if they verged on nonsensical in the current circumstances. But she was always eager to play the game, even if the rules weren't exactly well established. "Marla," she answered after a heartbeat, the name coming out as a murmur when she noticed his preoccupation with something further out in the haze. Distracted already? Not that she could fault him for it, well aware that civility was not something she wielded well.

Opening her mouth to excuse herself, her jaws instead snapped shut at the unexpectedness of his request. What would possess him – no pun intended – to ask such a thing of her? "Your services?" she repeated, peering toward the area where he had gestured. It looked like more of the same, only with further, obscuring tendrils of mist. Her brow quirked beneath the brim of her helm, not bothering to smooth the dubiousness from her features since his attention was directed elsewhere. How very interesting that his stride opened further distance between them, even as his words invited camaraderie. In spite of first impressions, he didn't seem to be truly dangerous, at least not in any sense that applied to her. And he had managed to pique her interest, which was no easy feat. After a few seconds spent mulling it over, Marla finally responded. "I can't say I have any prior engagements, although I'm curious about the company you normally keep if you're so intent on stretching this meeting out." She fell into step behind him, in no hurry to catch up. "Lead on, Hania Shen."
