Calder was in a funk. A horrible, terrible, depressing funk. He had no one. Well, he had FRIENDS, but not a BOIL friend, and that's what he was focusing on at the moment. What he didn't have clinging on his arm. Why he didn't have someone to hold. Why the best years of his school life, brief moments of freedom before entering full clanhood that would make him unable to play around without worry, were being wasted alone. He analyzed himself to see what major flaw he might have, and just couldn't figure it out. Instead, he moped and whined and complained and decided to write very bad poetry.
That was his solution. So, notebook in hand and sporting his best mourning face (his love life was dead after all), he sat outside and was writing bad poems, walking slowly for inspiration and making long, dramatic sighs to get him in the mood.

Toby wasn't in a funk. In fact, she'd had a rather splendid past few days settling in, what with all the festivities and new acquaintances and lovely little kitsune girls. Life was good, as far as she was concerned, but that didn't mean she'd spend her days sighing wistfully behind closed doors-- oh, no. It was too lovely an evening to pass up in her book, and so the falsicorn suited up for adventure... or at least, a nice walk across the grounds.
She was dressed sharp as usual, albeit without her favorite tailcoat, but a good vest and undershirt were still perfectly appropriate public wear, right? Iris certainly didn't have any complaints, his harness clutched casually in her hand, somehow always managing to keep pace without tripping over paw or hoof. She even found herself humming after a while, strolling down the winding path away from the monster dorms, not really certain where she'd end up, not particularly caring, but--
Oh, look; it seemed that someone else was taking refuge farther down the way, too!
At least, that was what she first thought upon seeing one particular silhouette that was... just wandering? Yes, that seemed about right. But there was something very unpleasant about the aimless manner they weaved about, the defeated way their shoulders slumped, the distant hemming and hawing that got her ears all a twitch.
And so it was that she felt compelled to go out of her way, because leaving someone who just felt do distraught by their lonesome was definitely not right. She was considerate enough to stop a few meters back at first, Iris doing the same in tandem, but none the less...
"... Are you alright?"

Calder had been in the middle of trying to find out what rhymed nicely with 'endless void of hopeless abyss' when what he presumed to be a boil spoke to him. While Calder was usual more alert, he had been rather distracted with thinking up a poem that reflected the black emptiness of his heart that he hadn't been paying attention when the monster approached him. If he did, there would still have been just the same amount of shock and awe as Calder turned slowly around and the world went into slow mode.
Lights glimmered in the boil's ivory hair as the softness of classic rock played in the background. His attire was refined, glasses adding a youthfulness yet intellectual aspect that made him want to pull them off just as a form of playful stripping, and his ears were something he would have tore off his left arm to nibble. While he took the entire majesty of his form in, noting that he could have very well been a relative of Alabaster, he delighted that instead of the rugged age that his beloved professor had that gave him an 'experienced' air was not shared here. instead, this boil looked roughly his age, making him think of spending their youth and eternity together and not risking fighting over an age difference when neither one got each other's references.
But in all of this, his eyes were hypnotized by the rigid horn shooting straight up from the boil's head, and the complete picture of this one amazing creature made his legs weak in surprise and shock that he dropped to the ground, legs bucking and giving out under him. On the ground, he could only stare up at the boil, and, mouth gaping open, nod. In the back of his mind, he was pressing his hands together and thanking Jack over and over again for delivering such a being as this to him now. Fate had answered his prayers and had delivered him the boil of hsi dreams. All was not lost! Love would blossom again!

Completely unaware of the beautifully scripted montage playing out in Calder's head, all Toby knew was that the boy had appeared to freeze in place and, seemingly without explanation, lose the ability to stand. Though she could't really see the exactitude of his starstruck face, the pale glow of his eyes had doubled in size, and his mouth seemed incapable of staying closed. In fact, had he not finally given her some response in the form of a nod, she would've asked if he needed medical attention, because it just struck her at that unusual.
Having a more direct view of the spectacle from ground level, Iris seemed curious at first, but the longer the stranger stood there doing nothing but making odd faces and gestures, the less interest he seemed to have.
"... Well, that's... nice to know." And what else could Toby say when this person seemed incapable of speaking? She still felt a pang of sympathy for the person, though, and something compelled her to prompt a little further, taking one, two, three more steps closer once it had been made clear that they were (probably) harmless. "If I may, what exactly were you doing out here-- ..." A pause. A charming, reserved little smile. As far as she was concerned, anything less would be uncouth. "Oh, I don't think we've been introduced, have we?..."
Names. Names were good to address people by!

Calder rose his knuckles to his lips, holding back a whimper of delight that was choked in his throat to a little meek noise as the boil stepped closer to him. Each step made him feel a little warmer, a little more flushed, and he continued to look up at the boil. Such a white knight, coming to save him from the dungeons of misery and take him far away from the forsaken lands of bachelorhood. He wanted to know everything about him. His favorite color, food, minipet, time of day, eating utensil, wallpaper choice for their future bedroom, baby name for their third daughter, EVERYTHING!
But first, a name.
The white rose was going to give him, lowly (well, low to the ground) Calder his name? Smiling wide, he rose up on his feet, reaching out to clasp one of the boil's free hands. "I'd love your name! I bet it's lovely! Everything about you is lovely!" Oh right. He had to give his name. Oh, it probably would be nothing compared to his, but playing the part, he knelt down before the boil on one knee, still clasping the hand as he looked up into those gorgeous, massive lenses. "My name is Calder, and I thank you, for saving me." For saving his poor romance-less life and heart.

... Oh. Oh. Well, things had definitely gone from slightly unusual to downright peculiar, and though Toby didn't show it, she was actually a little throw by the stranger's sudden change of tune. They'd verged on downright depressed before, and now, what was all this new, cordial glee? Obviously it was a good thing and she much preferred this new cheerful tune, but i was a small wonder how the boy didn't injure himself with all the mood whiplash.
When he suddenly grabbed her free hand (since one was still clutching Iris's harness), she seemed alarmingly un-alarmed, too, her sweet smile never wavering, with no immediate inclination to jerk back. In fact, the whole display earn a (very) weak chuckle, if only because she honestly had no idea what to make of this silly, delightful situation.
"Oh, thank you." The best answer she could come up with was just good old polite pleasantry. "It's very nice to meet you, Calder. That's a very nice name." Pausing for a moment, she dipped her head in a little, cordial bow before straightening again. "... And I'm glad I could help." Not that she knew WHAT she'd helped, but oh well. As long as the distress had been taken care of. "I'm Toby-- and this is Iris." There was a little gesture towards the scareon, who was still watching Calder with passive interest, but made no motion to vocalize or even budge from where he stood beside her.
Clearly, he was just waiting until she gave the command to keep walking and head about their way. Or were they just going to stand there and chatter 'til some cows came home?

"Tttooobbyy." He said, drawing out the same like a soft sigh and looking up at the boil. His eyes only darted briefly to Iris, the pair of them sharing as little interest as one did the other, and then back to the scareon's master. Calder didn't release his grip, but made sure he wasn't holding it to tightly. In this way, he could at least know he was holding the boil's hand, and could later imagine how it would feel like to walk side by side together on campus, enjoying that little, light, laugh the boil gave and that simple smile. What a warm creature, coming to him when he was feeling down, and yet not knowing him. He tried to remind himself that the reason he felt so horrible was because of Cade who, in a similar fashion, had arrived in all his glimmering glory and vanished without a trace, and that not to put his heart out there. That reminder lasted a moment because Calder looked up at the boil again and held his hand a little tighter.
Maybe the only problem was that Cade had vanished and Calder had let him.
"It's nice to meet you. You...go to school here? I havent' see you around before. I would have noticed." The boil was far too gorgeous for Calder to ignore in the hallways. I'll find where he lives so that I'll never loose him.

This boil (though she could have been wrong, it seemed more likely than other options) certainly seemed to enjoy her name, didn't he? Well, that was all fine and good by Toby, who still failed to show even the slightest hint of unease as Calder persisted in his hand holding, and gaping, and inevitable questioning of where she'd come from. As long as it got him to cheer up-- which it seemed to-- she was (apparently) content to roll with just about anything he could possibly throw at her. Iris, however, remained less than impressed than the display. Strangers weren't usually so... peculiar... around Master like this. Not that he knew of.
"I do," Toby was quick to respond in turn, with a little nod. "... Or, I will be properly soon. I just moved here a little earlier this week."
Well, that explained why Calder hadn't seen her trotting around the halls, if nothing else. "I've also been trying to... familiarize myself with the campus grounds before my class schedule is official," she added a moment later, perhaps just for the informational courtesy on his behalf. "So I've been taking a lot of walks. It's a good evening to be outside, don't you think?"
And that seemed like a more or less proper explanation of what she'd been doing out there now, right? Not only that, the situation just seemed to beg for a tagalong or tour guide proposition.

Calder wasn't above begging, especially if it was to a hot boil. Heck, he would grovel for a hot boil. Lick their hooves. Be a floor matt for a hot boil. Write "welcome home" on his forehead, he was there. So when the mention of walking on a nice day and getting familiar with the school was brought up, Calder's expression continued to sparkle with excitement and at the incredible luck he was having. To look at him now, you wouldn't have known he had been severally depressed for the past few days. Just as quickly and hard as Calder fell in love, he also fell just as hard. He was starting to gain a list of these episodes, but had he learned his lesson?
"I could show you around!"
Apparently not.
"I know all about this school. I love walking around. I just gotta stretch my legs. Can't stand being in my room all hours of the day like some of em. I know where all the rivers are, the woods surrounding the school, the beaten and unbeaten paths, sidewalks, and I know where most of the classes are. I could give you the grand tour of the school!" He was excited to show him, spend time with him, be helpful and do whatever he wanted or needed as long as they could spend time together. Whatever Toby wanted, Calder would be happy to help with."And if you had enough for today, I could always give you another tour or several since you're going to be here." This was perfect. He could find out what classes Toby was taking and possibly where he lived.
