Being picked on, even at his age and so close to graduation, wasn't uncommon. In many ways he brought it on himself. He was short, irritable and he reacted at times when he shouldn't... it was harder not to when he wasn't in uniform. He even brought it down on himself when he played chess at the park with the old men because he gloated at the worst times...
No surprise perhaps that the short, mouthy, opinionated 'brain' with such unsettling tendencies as taking notes on... almost everyone and everything would find today another -fine- example of inviting harassment.
What few people who trod on that ground realized that he had various ways of staging 'accidents' involving some of the more predictable routines he had noted around the city.

Nathan Darrow wasn't exactly the nicest person on the best day. In fact, he was often the complete opposite: he was rude and gruff, and purposefully went out of his way to piss people off. It was fun, and he loved seeing where people had their breaking points, and what he could play on and poke at to get someone to snap at him.
Snapping was the best.
But today he was in a different state of mind. He wasn't picking on people just for the sake of it, or for fun. He was doing it to vent his own frustrations, because he was worried when he never wanted to feel that way. He hated caring about people, and denied it until he was blue in the face, but the fact remained true.
His father was in the hospital, and he didn't know why. But it pissed him off, and he wanted to hurt who or whatever was responsible. Since he didn't know, he was taking it out on just about anyone who got too close.
So when he bumped into Zac, he growled and shoved the boy rather hard. "Watch it, Smurf."

"Watch it yourself..." He said back with a daggers edge to his voice, not enough sleep, no patience at all.It wasn't like him to do something like push back, not physically, there was little to do but take note of the boy, it was the only way he could really 'work'.

Oh he didn't. He did not. This small fraction of a squirt did not just sass Nate back.
"What was that?"
Nate growled at Zac, deciding that he hadn't properly bullied someone in too long and this guy had just earned the honor. He growled and pushed him again, not getting out of his way and widening his stance to keep Zac from passing.
"Say that again."

"I said...watch it -yourself-" He said snapping closed a small note book he carried. "Stature isn't an excuse to be boorish, though its debatable if anyone ever -told- you that before." He scowled at the offending youth. Too tall by half, and from the pose he assumed, a determined and practiced bully.
"If you push your luck here...you'll find it changes elsewhere." he said quietly. It was a strange sort of threat to make.

Nathan glowered at the smaller young man, though there was a glimmer of a grin in his eyes. He always felt better when he got to honestly hassle someone. As much good as being a senshi was teaching him, all that rot about responsibility and diligence and loyalty, he was still fond of being a bully.
In a way, it was a relief to return to form. Cathartic to remember his roots, as it were, and do some good, old fashioned jack a** things.
He cracked his knuckles.
"You think so? That sounds like a threat or a challenge, or something. But I think you're well aware that you put your foot in your mouth now." He looked around, as if debating where to shove the smaller boy, since this wasn't a school campus and lockers were not available. The classic garbage can? If only he had his paintball gun.
Then things would get really fun.
"What would you say is your favorite place to get punched?"

"The speed dial on my phone that calls the cops for assault" He countered fishing a phone from his sweat shirt pocket and clutching it tightly. "That would be a good start for punching things...namely BUTTONS."
That at least worked some of the time, it -was- assault even if sometimes people downplayed it as 'just part of growing up' and 'builds character' ...god knew he had a life time of 'character' from such events.

Nate burst out laughing.
"You have the cops on speed dial? Are you paranoid, or just hilariously pathetic? You know it's only three numbers, right?"
He lashed his hand out, but he wasn't aiming to snatch the phone. He noted his reflexes were good, but if he had been powered up he would have been much more comfortable in his chances of success. Still, it seemed he was always powered up these days and he needed to re-learn how to manage as a civilian.
At the moment, he felt he was doing just fine.
In any case, he was aiming for the smaller guy's thumb rather than his phone, wanting to wrench it backwards just because he had threatened to call the cops, of all things. Nate hadn't even done anything yet! So he felt obligated to give him a reason to try it.

He snarled with a curled lip only to yelp in pain as his thumb was wrenched backward, overdrawn
"b*****d!" He said trying to pry his hand free, he doubted that he could make a kick connect.

Nate laughed at that.
"You don't think I'm as bad as those terrorists, huh? Well, at least there's that," He grinned wickedly, not releasing the guy's thumb. Poor Zac had picked a bad day to accidentally bump into the moody, sometimes unpredictably jerkish teenage Darrow.
He shoved Zac backwards, keeping pressure on his thumb to make sure he didn't try to run away, stomping on the shorter boy's foot to keep him in place and throw his balance for the shove. It was something he had learned a long time ago, and he wasn't quite sure why it worked.
When he had deigned to go to school, or at least grace the grounds with his presence if not his attention, he had been subjected to the tedium of grade school physical education classes. One teacher had showed him, apparently while bored, that stepping on someone's foot before pushing them usually made it difficult for them to keep their balance. Leave it to Nate for that to be the only lesson he took with him from his short tenure in school.
"I think you're going to need a plan B," he said, referring to the phone call idea.

Zac gave a yelp of pain, the twist of his thumb, the loss of balance, the taunts that made his blood quietly boil. What gave people this crude want of physical power, what kind of shallow person derived pleasure from bringing down others in their moments of exaltation?
He gave a small snarl, rather badger like, short and furious and let the phone drop so he could grapple at the hand holding his poor abused thumb. He tried twisting ineffectually to deliver a kick to the offending stomping foot as well. Probably an invitation to leave him black and blue in turn but there were some lessons that pride had a harder time accepting.

Nathan was exactly the kind of guy that took pleasure from picking on people he deemed weaker than him. Or who had some how earned the honor, from some series of observations or unknown cues. Nate didn't need much justification for it, though.
Sometimes it was as easy as 'whoever was closest at the time'.
Zac happened to fill the physical requirements of people Nate thought were worth picking on. Smaller, and, in Nate's eyes, geeky looking. Easy pickings.
He was surprised when Zac growled at him, though. Fighting back would always be greeted with the same response for the pent up bully, who hadn't been able to bully anyone in a long time. His duties as a senshi prevented him, at least partially, from really enjoying himself in this way. He frowned and swung his fist at Zac, releasing him abruptly as he did so.

The release was a clever move, all things considered. It set him off balance and the punches did the rest sending him toppling with a taste of blood in his mouth and gasping for air, freshly departed. “b*****d.” He snarled. Oh what he would have given to just ‘power up’ and kill the little s**t. But that was in poor taste among other things… it was ‘cheep’. “You just wait… you won’t even see it coming you over tall ignoramus.”

Nate would have been very surprised if the nerd he was picking on suddenly became a Negaverse General, but then, he would just counter with powering up as well. Fight fire with fire, and all that, and then he would have an Eternal on his hands.
But the whole secret identity thing would be shot to hell, and he wouldn't do that just as Zac wouldn't, either.
So they were stuck fighting man on man, and for Nate that seemed to be working out just fine.
"Just wait for what? You to start crying? Because yeah, I'm waiting for that one, at least." He laughed, shoving his hands into his pockets languidly and taking a step to pass by the boy he had left on the floor. He shoved him as he walked by for good measure. "See yah later, Smurf."
Well, he was feeling better.
