The book felt crisp in Kathryn's hands. Gently she placed it into the basket on the floor before standing up from the crouched position she had been in. She inhaled softly before perusing the titles in front of her. So many books. It was like she was in heaven. It was always the same reaction when she entered the store. Pick up a book and caress the cover gently before placing it back on the shelf. Her gaze would wander from title to title as she scanned the shelves. It was a ritual of sorts when she came looking for a new book to add to her personal collection.

Well new in the sense that the book hadn't been found in a second-hand store. But she had already read the book at least once from the library and now she'd found a copy to call her own. Storm grey eyes took in the few customers browsing before she reached down and picked the basket off the floor. Was there anything else she needed purchase or was it just this one book? Kat gave a sigh as she made her way closer to the register. Once again she'd forgotten to make a list of the books she was looking out for.

"Yes, yes all well 'n' good but what was it bloody composed of?" Jayden mumbled to himself under his breath, flipping quickly through the pages of a book he had pulled off the shelf in his search. He scanned quickly and methodically, and when he wasn't able to find what he was looking for he'd frown and shove the book back in it's space. He cared little about the books themselves, and the only reason he was at the bookstore of all places was because he hadn't been able to find an acceptable answer to his questions in the books at the library. He wouldn't ever buy a book -- waste a space, why keep it when you've read it already? -- but instead would read one at the shop and put it back when he was finished.

His gaze shifted upward and he pushed some of his red locks out of his view. There.
Up on the top shelf there was a book that might have his answer.

Now, Jayden wasn't short, but he wasn't tall neither for his age nor his gender. Add to that fact he was a cripple and there really wasn't a way he could reach a book that high on the shelf. He glanced up and down the isle for one of those trolley ladders to climb up on...but nothing. Grabbing one from somewhere else in the store would be too much of a hassle...so instead he planted on foot on the bottom shelf and hoisted himself up a foot, shimmying his cane up to use it as a grabbing hook.

Not the most effective method, but he was certain in a moment he'd have his book.

Who said that books were cheap? Kathryn had just paid the cashier for her purchase and was putting her purchase away in her handbag in preparation to leave the store. An odd sound of scraping came from further into the store and drew Kat's attention towards it. Apparently someone had decided to scale the shelving of the store in a quest to reach something on the very top shelf. Kathryn watched the spectacle for a minute in silence before she heard one of the store clerks yell something unintelligible to the climber.

Why hadn't he just asked for help?

Noticing the cane in the youth's hand Kathryn made a beeline for the section he was climbing. She stood far back enough so that if something were to happen - like the shelf giving way or the youth falling - she wouldn't be directly in the line of possible injury. She would be close enough to help with the result though.

Kathryn cleared her throat in an attempt to capture the attention of the climber. "I don't think that is a good idea. These shelves are meant to hold books ... not people."

Cripes, Jayden thought to himself as one of the store workers saw him and started yelling something. He brought his cane down on the spine of the book he had been trying to get at, and promptly tugged it off the shelf, letting it fall to the ground. He then brought his cane down and placed it on the ground (as close to it as his reach would let him at least), using it as support when he hopped off the shelf. Of course his landing wasn't perfect, and he bumped back into the shelf he was climbing. That didn't matter -- he had gotten his book and he quickly scooped it off the ground so if the attendant walked by he wouldn't be forced to pay for it by mishandling.

As he did so, his gray eyes rested on a pair of sneakers facing his direction. Apparently he had a spectator.
Jayden straightened up and tucked the book under his arm, just barely being tall enough to look down at the girl as she remarked at his...success.
"Can'a help you with somethin' Sheila?" he said in quick response, choosing to ignore her statement. Of course shelves were for books, was she a dill or summat? And obviously it was a good idea -- it worked, didn't it?

Kathryn frowned at the youth. Apparently he had managed to get the book without too much incident. Still wouldn't it have been easier just to ask for help. The cane that the youth carried sparked a little bit of interest as to what might be wrong but she didn't ask yet. Possibly it wasn't polite as to inquire right away. Kathryn watched as he tucked the book under his arm. Was he even going to acknowledge her presence.

Suddenly she was aware that the youth was talking to her. She had to tilt her head up a little to look into his face as she replied. "No but I was about to ask you the same thing. What book had you so intrigued that you put yourself at risk for injury? I mean if you can't reach it in the first place shouldn't you have someone else help you? It is why there are people in the store working. It's their job to assist people."

It seemed to take the girl a moment before she even realized he was talking to her. Hu. Guess she was a bit dill after all.

"Not tha' it's any of your business Shelia," Jayden said coldly, "But if I can get it myself, I should like to do so. An' all the people in the store were so flat out* when I looked I'd rather get it myself then wait for one of them to 'have the time' to get it for me."

That and Jayden didn't talk to people when it wasn't really necessary. Really, he didn't know why he was talking to this girl now, but his day had been so dry (aside from his book hunting, but that was finished now) that it might prove to have some sort of entertainment value.

"What's got you so bored you bother ta ask anyway?"

* 'Flat out like a lizard drinking,' is the full phrase; Aussie slang for 'busy.'
