A Wandering Esper

Beloved Stargazer

She'd hidden the crystal so well, but she still couldn't forget it's existence. She would never forget that night, that was for sure.

But she knew that she had to trade it in. She knew that when she did trade it in, the news would travel down the information grapevine quickly. Most of the high ranks of the negaverse would know that Captain Fluorite had killed a senshi.

They would expect her to do it again.

Now... the initial flash of guilt had faded, if only slightly... and was a little more comfortable with the idea.

Slightly.

She teleported to negaspace with her bounty in hand, held carefully as if afraid that the slightest touch would break it, and scanned out for one of the general queens.

None.

Hm.

Tanzanite was probably in the rift.... But she wasn't sure if entering with a god damn senshi starseed was the best idea.

General Painite was not often in the negaspace, save to drop of energy. Indeed, she had only come here to do just that, and perhaps take a trip to the Rift and check things out a bit more there. She wanted to do more training, after all, and it would be as good a place as any.

Certainly better than finding helpless civilians and beating them up. Or wasting what could have been fun traps and devious plots in order to get a senshi to fight her hand to hand, to practice with her new, upgraded weapon.

Painite was still wrapping her head around being a General. She liked, no loved, the feeling of power that came with the promotion, and the feeling of control. She felt like the whole world was opening up to her, and anything she wanted to do, to try, to accomplish was within her reach now. She would continue to work hard, to serve the negaverse to the best of her ability.

And to keep having fun with it. Her way.

She turned when she felt someone else teleport near her, smiling brightly to see that it was Fluorite. Teleporting!

"Captain Fluorite, I assume?" she said brightly, moving over to catch the Nega in a surprise hug, not noticing right away that she seemed to be off her game.

Poor Fluorite never saw the general coming.

She had felt her, of course, but it hadn't occurred to her that it would be Painite - the last time they'd seen each other, the older girl had been a captain.

She stiffned a bit on reflex in the hug but then relaxed, through something occured to her suddenly.

The general aura was coming from her.

"General ?" Wow ! "Congrats !" She was happy, but... Fluorite was generally more outgoing than this.

Something was up.

Painite noticed the lack in Fluo's attitude at the moment, tilting her head in wonder. She was immediately worried about her friend, thinking maybe she was upset about her brother being hurt. But it felt like it was more than that.

After all, he was still alive and in one piece.

Mostly.

"Thank you, and congratulations on your own promotion, my captain," she smiled brightly, but she looked confused. And she was not one to let an interesting story slip by her, particularly when that story was tied to the apparent happiness of her friend.

"What's the matter, Fluo? Are you alright? You look... pale. A little off."

...Oh, that was right, she hadn't really seen Painite since her promotion. Beside the rift, but there had been so many people there that the now-general had probably overlooked her.

She was tiny, after all.

Fluorite shook her head a bit. "I..." Maybe it was too soon. Too early. But keeping it was dangerous, and damning if someone found it.

She would just have to deal.

"Could you... Take care of this for me, then ?" Her hand opened, revealing a senshi starseed. The energy coming off it was unmistakable.

That practically said the whole story right there.

Painite looked at the crystal and nodded, understanding immediately. She moved to carefully take the starseed, having never held one before. Certainly not one from a senshi. She looked at the young woman, and a soft, warm smile crossed her expression. Not her usual exuberant one, or one tied to a laugh.

And certainly not the wicked, mocking one she got while she was working.

No, this expression was for her friends alone, particularly those friends that needed a bit of comfort or support. She couldn't help but hug Fluorite again. The General had not killed anyone, not in battle at least. Civilians, yes, probably, but never a senshi. It wasn't for lack of trying, of course, though something in the back of her mind always seemed to click into gear and allow her to accept never fully accomplishing her plans and goals of her traps. Oh, didn't kill another one, next time senshi.

She wasn't sure what she would do if she did, in fact, actually win.

"You did a very good thing for the Negaverse, and this little crystal is proof of that. You've done everyone here very proud, you know. Are you okay?"

She accepted the hug more readily now, wrapping her arms around the other woman's waist. It was true she needed the comfort now, and while she might have been able to put up a front before everyone else... Painite was another matter. It was hard to hide anything from her.

"It.. was surprisingly easy and hard at the same time." She said, softly. "Easy to do, but... After..."

After had been bad. Really bad. She wanted to be seen as strong, even if in reality her reaction to the kill made her soft and weak. The emotions were still swirling in her heart, and she was more than glad to see the incriminating crystal go to the general's possession.

It was easier not to see it, feel it.

"I know," she said softly, letting Fluorite cling to her.

She didn't know, not really, but she had thought about it more than enough. Even just now, and the thoughts continued to whirl around in her head. She frowned, though with the hug Fluo wouldn't be able to see the thoughtfully, vaguely sad expression.

"Just understand that this is what we have to do, and you will be respected for your actions. You don't have to feel bad about not enjoying it, though, and you don't have to think less of yourself if you're having a hard time with it. Taking a life isn't supposed to be easy, not for most of us. There's no right way to do it: you have to find your own justification and medium, and deal with it in a way only you know how."

She pulled back to look at Fluo, though she kept hold of her. She smiled, knowing that her approach wasn't exactly the hard edge she might have needed or could be expected of someone in the role of a General, but she had never been much for cruelty to her own teammates. Leave that to others.

It took all kinds to build an effective unit, after all.

"In time, you will see this starseed as a badge of honor, and you'll deserve it. You served your people well. Now you need to focus on taking care of yourself, alright?"

She did not see the frown at all, and it was probably better that way. She was more than willing to think that Painite knew everything, saw everything, and to cling to the older woman life if she'd been her lifeline.

She wondered, a moment, if she should tell exactly what had happened, and the why. What she had been trying to accomplish. But, no, she decided it was probably better not to.

With her current quota... She could easily take a few days off. But should she ?

Could she ?

"Alright." She said, softly.

She would try.

Painite smiled, hearing the conflict that remained in Fluorite's voice.

"Your head will clear up, I promise. Just give yourself the time and the space to properly deal with it. Don't hide or try and distract yourself, okay? I know it feels like that might be the best thing to do, but in the end you really need to rest, take a break for yourself and let your head wrap around things properly."

She was offering advice on something she didn't really know how to deal with, because she never had to, but she believed that Fluorite was stronger than one senshi starseed. This was what they were meant to do, and it would never be easy for some of them. She didn't think even she could do it easily, despite how much fun she had stabbing senshi or chasing them around, or trying to trap them.

But it didn't matter, in the end, so long as they all remained united and remembered that the end would justifiy the means. However they chose to go about it, however they chose to react to it, in the end, they were still all fighting for the same things. It united them, and there was comfort to be taken from that.

As long as she remained herself, stuck to her guns and developed her own beliefs and methods, she would be just fine. Of that, Painite was sure. The pressure to preform to the standard the Negaverse put forth, to be a soldier of darkness or whatever it is that they each envisioned this world to be, was intense and easy to stress over. But for this Negaverse General, it was the individual that mattered most.

The stronger each fighter became, the more confidence they developed, and the more they understood themselves in the scope of their loyalty to their cause were the key things she focused on. Through all that, the rest would follow.

"I don't want to be alone." The words came out before she could really think, words she probably shouldn't have said. Alone was when she started thinking... Alone was when things got bad.

There was Matthew, but well. Matthew was a little out of commission. And he... didn't know yet. She wasn't sure how he'd react to knowing.

This whole thing was just... messed up.

"Alone is... when I hear the screams again." She looked downright fragile, when she said that.

Painite looked at her sadly, then nodded her head.

"Then I'll just have to keep you company, if you don't mind," she said, smiling reassuringly. Fluorite was young and scared, and had done something new, thrilling and terrifying all at once. It was overwhelming, and that was certainly understandable.

She smiled.

There were two instincts in play for her now. One to provide friendship and understanding, as a companion and compatriot, and the other as an older woman, a higher rank. Something sisterly, in a small way. She just hated seeing Fluo so upset.

"Do you like video games? We can play some nintendo if you promise to not to try and toast anything with it." She hugged her loosely again, knowing she would see her way through it.

"'Kay." Had that been a sniffle ?

Oh, dear. That had been indeed. But damn if she would allow herself to cry here, where everyone could see her. In Fluorite's mind, she'd done way too much crying already.

There was a small, strained chuckle then. "Why would I want to toast anything in a Nintendo ?"

Yeah. The meaning hadn't caught up with her yet.

Painite grinned at her and pat her on the shoulder.

"You'll figure that one out," she said, nodding her head, "but I won't spoil the fun. Come on, let's get out of here."

She opted to teleport them, since she knew it could be draining on a Captain if they weren't careful, and she imagined Fluo had enough to worry and stress about right now. With her brother being hurt, and this weight on her shoulders, she seemed to really just need some company. It was nice to do simple things for friends, sometimes, as it showed that they were cared about even in ways that were taken for granted.

Painite was thinking about her well being, not just the accomplishment she made for the Negaverse. Once the starseed was safely homed, the Nintendo awaited them.
