As Avani and her brother got older, Kanya left on more and more hunting trips in order to feed her small family. She never went very far away but still Avani sometimes felt as alone in the world as she feared her mother felt like sometimes late at night. Then again most didn't have a brother to bother them.
That day Avani climbed to the top of the rock pile that was their home to escape her brother's snoring. The small cave was just right for the three of them but Avani always swore that when it was just her and Devarsi at sleeping at home his consent movement and snoring would bring the cave down on them. To escape him she commonly lounged on top of the hill on the flat rocks sunning her self or lounging in the shade if she can find it.
Once there she arranged herself for the best sun Avani lazily watched the clouds form and fall apart. Her mind drifting the young cub started to hum a song that her mother taught to her not long ago. She sung it softly, adding a bit more force to it halfway through the song as the feeling of it swept her into the lyrics.
"I pray we'll find your light
And hold it in our hearts

Sozin had travelled far, he had walked until his paws ached and cuts appeared and still he could not escape the thoughts of the wretched leopardess with whom he had shared those nights, and more disgustingly, those days with. He had been interested in her, beyond the thoughts of mere play and entertainment, and that thought alone sickened him. A leopardess. Pathetic, he scoffed to himself.
He had driven himself hard to escape, but he found that walking did not help him. Instead, he ignored the paths he was taking, and focused instead on finding things to distract him. People, toys, food, finding shelter. Anything.
He was walking along another of his nameless and unplanned paths when he heard it. Something that stopped him dead in his tracks and made a snarl build at his maw.
That song.
It couldn't be?
No. It wasn't. Her voice was not that young - the voice that sung would grow to be beautiful like hers, but it was not hers. Still...that song. Surely it was a coincidence?
Sozin launched himself towards it, starting a quick pace and only slowing when the singer of the song had come into view - the youth was perched atop some rocks, singing to herself.
He stared. No. Those markings, those colours...

Avani felt like she was being watched. Someone or something was staring right at her and it didn't feel like they were happy. She opened her eyes and her golden eyes flashed as she searched the area for the reason she felt like she was being watched.
There. A male. Lion. Stranger. He wasn't far away, just close enough to see clearly, and to be heard. "Who are you? And why are you here?" The questions were hesitate but full of curiously. Others had come this way before but always her mother was home. Always she felt safe and not this slight unease. But Avani was a brave young thing and felt the need to confront this male, if only until her mother returned. Could something have happened to her mom? Could that be why a stranger has come? Could that be the reason that Avani feels scared?
"Is Mom ok? Did she fall again?" Fear for her mother flooded her system overriding her natural weariness to strangers. Still atop the pile of stone Avani took a few steps towards the stranger, the sunlight made her pelt stand out against the dirt and gray rock.

Sozin didn't respond to the cub – the young girl's – questions over who he was, or why he was there, for he was too busy staring. Those markings were unmistakable, and her heritage was blurred between two species. He'd seen enough hybrids to know a filthy creature when he saw it, and this girl was a hybrid.
A hybrid with his markings, and hers mixed together.
No.
The next questions snapped him out of his daze and he mentally shook his head as the cub moved towards him, obviously worried about her mum.
There was no mistaking it.
This hybrid cub was his, and something had to be done about it.
“Yes,” Sozin said, his voice strained with 'worry'. “She's fallen and twisted a paw, I think. She asked me to come and get you and bring you to her.”
He had to get her away from there, before she came back. She would be around somewhere. Even though he had not known her long, he knew that she would care for her cubs. Sozin felt a pang of something in his chest, but shoved it aside. No. Now was not the time for that. He needed to remove the little...filthy creature from his world, quickly.

Avani nodded. She could only think about the few times she went out with her mom for hunting lessons. For the most part her mother was surefooted but there were the odd occasions where a hole would just catch her paw and send her tumbling to the dirt. Kanya would get up and shake it off but Avani always worried that one day it would be much worse then just getting back up and walking it off. It seemed like this day was one of them.
"Wait just a moment. I need to get Devarsi up first."
She slid and scrambled down to the cave and ruffly shoved her brother. "Devarsi! Wake up! We have to go. Mom's fallen again."
Her brother woke groggily and sleepily followed Avani out of the cave. The slide down the rocks woke him up more but still he let Avani take charge.
With Devarsi in tow Avani came closer to the lion but still something in her told her to remain cautious. "So mom twisted her paw again? How come we didn't hear her call out? How far away is she? And how did you know to come get us?" These questions really should have been asked first but just weren't.
"Avani?" Her brother asked. Silently asking his sister exactly what was going on.

Sozin’s breath caught in his throat as he realised there was not one, but two of these disgusting, vile little creatures. The number didn’t make it difficult to get rid of them, he knew, but it made a snarl build in his throat though he refused to allow it to be vocalised. He needed to play this well, so he could remove these blights from the world.
The little girl was smart, he had to admit. She’d gotten the best of him then. He kept the worried expression plastered on his face. “I’m afraid she is quite a distance, Avani. I stumbled upon her and she asked if I could fetch you and your brother. She said that you would know how to help her, as I’m afraid I’m a tad too bulky to lift without risking more damage to her paw.” He strung the story together, shifting on his paws as if anxious to move.
“We should hurry,” he encouraged. “I don’t like leaving Kanya vulnerable like that, with her injured paw.”
That should get them moving, he thought smirking inwardly.

Avani didn't have a chance to answer her brother's unspoken question since the lion answered it for her. I guess she had to go out farther then normal to find a good hunting spot, she thought to herself.
She nearly asked how she could help and why, if it was only a twisted paw, would the male be afraid to lift her. But she didn't when he mentioned that he had left her alone and unprotected.
"Well then lets go." Avani started to rush off in the direction that the lion had come. She stopped a little way's away and turned back, "Well what are you two waiting for. The day wont get any longer and Mom is waiting."

Sozin chuckled inwardly. Pathetic. They were buying this rot? They didn't deserve to carry his genes. However, he moved swiftly, overtaking Avani, but keeping his pace at a speed that the cubs would be able to follow.
"Just follow me," Sozin encouraged. He thought about smiling, to set them further at ease, but they were following him well enough, and this wasn't really a 'smiling' situation, he mused. Not that he cared, he just needed to get them away.
He led them away from the den, and away from where their mother would find them. He thought of getting rid of them at the den, but something in his gut told him he couldn't do that. Kanya would find them and, whilst he hated leopards and denied he felt anything for the blind female, he couldn't bring himself to do that to her.
He would get rid of them elsewhere, and it would be like they'd never even existed...

As they got farther and farther from the home area Avani became more and more uncertain. Why would Mom come this far out? Something is very very wrong about this. As the feeling of unease bloomed in her mind she slowed down to more of a trot rather then the all out run they had been running.
How did he know our names? We told him. How did he know mom's name? She racked her brain but there was no answer for that question. Neither Devarsi or her had ever called her anything but Mom so how did this red and white lion know that their mother's nickname was Kanya?
"How did you know? How did you know Mom's name?" Her question wasn't overly loud but she had come to almost a complete standstill.
