A slightly small adventure.

An RP taking place in Rosstead in the heat of a summer afternoon. The participants are Septimus the withered leaf stunted, the little Earl and fellow teapot, and Peony the cloak excito.

It was a peaceful day for most.

Having been wracked by the tumultuous riots of March, Rosstead was in the process of being rebuilt, a great wounded animal slowly recovering from its reaming. The people had torn it down, but there was only so much destruction that could be wrought upon a city before those very same people gave up and picked up the pieces again. People were too attached to land, to homes, to memories to let sleeping dogs lie, and on that principle, Rosstead recovered, slowly but surely. Nothing had been solved by the events of the spring, but not everything had been lost, either. Though the work was hard, work took the mind off the plague sweeping Panymium, and the rebuilding had reached a point where many had new homes and businesses already. The day was hot, and they took shelter in these new homes, resting and rejuvenating at least for the moment, a few stolen hours of peace in a busy season.

In the shade of one of these new buildings, a tiny phasmas was not so well rested. Panting and clutching a woodchip shield, he glanced around the corner to make sure he hadn't been followed. The faster he moved, the sooner he would be safe again, and hopefully his absence would be unnoticed by his six brothers. He hadn't meant to wander into the human city, but he had, and now he was well and truly lost. At first the new sights and sounds had been delightful, but now they were simply frightening, and the strange plague who had led him here had disappeared entirely, leaving him without even a guide back to the forest he had come from. He had been wandering around for hours now, at the mercy of feet and frolicking children and wagon wheels, but the most frightening thing of all had been a rather malicious cat, which had been following him for twenty minutes now. The shield was for that, and though he finally thought he had shaken it off his trail, he couldn't be sure. Hesitantly, he scurried around the bend, lifting the hem of his leafy robe as he did so. He wanted help, but no one could hear him, and he wasn't even sure if the big people should see him or not. Worriedly, he tugged the hem of his sleeve, and continued on, a little brown smudge in a wide, worrisome world, looking for assistance or shelter or at least something to refresh himself with.

It had been quit the journey for Gio and his entourage. That of course being an annoying little plague and his teapot. The border control, the riots, the repairs to his father's shop. Not to mention the sticky sort of heat that got under your skin and made your insides melt. But that had not bothered The Little Earl. In fact, it had done little to ruffle to tiny Plague and his creame clothes. Perhaps it was the fact that he didn't suffer from sticky human skin. All the rebuilding though had left Gio with little time for him, or his precious teapot. So, while the man was at work, the plague was at play. With a companion of course. What kind of man-shapped being would he be if the Earl hadn't invited the teapot along for the ride?

He had "commandeered" a small wooden circle, wheels mounted to the bottom. It was meant to be part of a child's toy, but the human was far from a child, so he probably didn't need it. Atop of the platform was the teapot Earl had taken to keeping company, attached to the front of the platform, a string, and pulling the string and everything else, was the Earl himself. He'd been pulling the teapot around behind him for most of the morning, much like a child would pull a wagon. If that wagon were bigger than the child of course.
"Having a good time love?" he smiled happily back at the teapot, as if he expected a reply from an inanimate object. The lack of response did little to dampen his mood, little hand pushing the lip of his hat back from his face. He was treating the little pot to a day out on the town, obviously it was pleased with him. Who wouldn't be pleased with a day on the town? They would obviously be friends when the change occurred from inanimate to very animate. Perhaps the little Plague that sprouted forth would be thankful for this early demonstration of kindness. After all, it was such a wonderful gesture to take time out of his busy day being The Earl to show a teapot about the city. Of course, that all hinged on Gio not wringing his tiny neck when he found out the teapot had gone missing.

There had been the nearly fatal indecent with that carriage an hour previous, but it had been skillfully avoided. No harm had been done, not even a chip of paint missing, there was no evidence of their outing. Now if only Earl had remembered the way back. The mad dash away from the carriage wheels and horse hooves had turned the poor little Plague around. So instead he had wheeled the teapot into an alcove behind a building he could only assume was a bakery. The sweet smell of cinnamon and spice of sweet breads told him as much. He sat at the edge of the wooden platform, adjusting his dapper bow.
"Now. Where the bloody hell are we princess?" The teapot gave no answers, merely sat lifeless, covered in swirls.

The speck of an excito Peony was quite safe in her mama's hood and in a very happy mood this fine day.

Mama, who was in fact a Lulu Rogers, had apparently just moved to Rosstead. She would tell Peony grand stories of Gadu and Montburg, but the latter couldn't begin to fathom what it would be like to travel from one town to another. After all, it was already such a challenge to move about in just one. While mama was running around figuring out what she needed to do, Peony was twiddling her thumbs and dangling her legs as she peeked out of the dedicated pocket Lulu used to keep the newborn excito. Peony didn't want to think about the possibility of being separate from mama.

Rosstead was such a scary place! With foreign giants and unrecognizable mansions and...and just simply scary things, Peony hid back in her safe haven. Peony played with her dress and twiddled her thumbs once again. She decided to tell Lulu that she was scared. Perhaps mama would know what to do. Peony then braved to climb up her mother's cloak to reach her ear. "Mama...I'm scared...!" Peony exclaimed.

Lulu shook her head. "Peony, just don't look down. It's not at all complicated, and quite an easy task. You see, when I was a little girl I would always..." It was at this moment when Lulu made a sharp right turn unexpectedly that Peony lost her grip on her mother and began to float off. Lulu just kept rambling on about her past without realizing what had occurred right before her. (Later, Lulu would realize exactly how difficult it was to take care of such a small excito, but that's for a different time.)

Peony tried to scream as she fell, but nothing came out except a mere "Ma...ma?" She cried out in pain when she landed on the rough ground, and couldn't compose herself when giant boots and hooves were stepping in all directions, kicking up dust and dirt that made it difficult for Peony to breathe. Finally, she tumbled to a stop when she rolled straight into what seemed to be...leaves.

But she paid no attention to that, just glad that she finally stopped.

"Oh my..." Peony ached everywhere, and was so worried as to what to do. Would Mama come for her? Where was she?

"Ma...ma...I'm s-scared.."

Peony couldn't help but begin to cry as she sat there, lost, dazed and utterly in pain.

There was a rustle as something from the street shot out and hit Septimus's unguarded back, and he let out a dry, crackly cry, whirling around to see his attacker, brandishing his shield hither and thither at the air.

For there was only air to brandish it at. Nothing greeted him when he turned around, and he looked back and forth in evident confusion before he heard the crying at his feet. Looking down, he was surprised to see a little red bundle. Hesitantly, he looked both ways, then reached his slender, stemlike hands towards the thing, not quite sure what to do. Septimus was the baby of his own makeshift family, and though Primus might have known what to do with a weeping plague, Septimus was lost. "It's okay," he offered hesitantly, "I'll protect you!"

That was what the Green Man did, at least. That was what people did to be reassuring, right? Septimus showed her his shield. "Look, see, nothing can get past this, um, impenetrable barrier." The thing kept sniffling and calling for 'Ma Ma.' Was that the name of its favourite older brother?

Septimus looked around again for help. Why did everything confusing happen to him?

Back on the tour again. Or rather, back to trying to find a familiar street in an attempt to get his little inanimate companion back home before Gio noticed. "No worries princess. We'll be 'ome soon. Well. Eventually." He grinned back at the teapot, adjusting the tether he'd tied to his waist with a simple bow. He figured tying himself to the teapot's platform provided a bit more security. At least he wouldn't loose it to the tether getting pulled from his tiny hands. Instead he would get dragged along with the platform should it get caught on something. Not ideal, but at least he'd be with the teapot when he died horribly under someone's heal.

The little Earl had started to turn a corner when he heard what sounded like tiny sobbing. Humans were louder, but this one sounded quite close and small. He and teapot peaked around the corner of the building, finding what he had never expected to find out wandering the town. Other little Plagues. How wonderful! He had found temporary companions. Temporary of course because it would be rude to simply bring them home without informing Gio. And that man could barely handle his own teapot these days. The pleased little grin that had formed was starting to decay. It was a poor site when a comrade in arms wept. Not that he actually knew these two tiny creatures, but they were of the same curiousness. Was the little red bundle weeping for her mother? Or at least he hoped it was a tiny girl. It would be quite the site to find a boy in such a pleasantly crimson dress.
"Now what foul deep 'as set this fair princess into tears?" he was rounding the corner now, walking towards the weeping one and the other made, apparently, out of leaves. What they needed was a charming escort. He would just have to fit the bill. Nevermind that he himself was lost. That was a small matter. Once near the little one he took off his hat, pressing it to his chest as he bowed, as a polite gentleman is always required to do in the presence of a lady. "Can I be of assistance?" The hat was back in place, along with his roguish grin. Companion teapot simple sat idly, as teapots are want to do.

It hadn't struck the Earl that perhaps he would seem quite odd, a bow around his waist out of twine connected to a dolly and a teapot.

Peony hurt. She simply was in pain, and didn’t know what to do. "It's okay," a voice said. Peony sniffed once more before looking up to see who it belonged to. "I'll protect you!" She saw an unfamiliar…being before her. Someone and something she's never seen before, but he seemed kind. "Look, see, nothing can get past this, um, impenetrable barrier."

Peony smiled and giggled a little at him. Had there always been kind people out here in this strange and mysterious land? Mama had always told her to be exceedingly careful and mindful of the outside world. In fact, mama was so worried that Peony was never let outside unless she was in the safety of mama’s pocket. Then again, Lulu told her another lesson as well.

"T-thank you." She managed to let out of her small lips before curtsying. Be polite and courteous to those who helped you. Being a woman--and being the right kind of woman--was very important. "I'm s-so very sorry. I…I…" Peony was almost bursting into tears again, unable to finish the sentence. She had never been away from Lulu like this. Of course, there have been times when Peony was left at the windowsill, watching the foreign beings walk about. That’s all Peony really did: wait for Lulu, listen to Lulu, tag along with Lulu. But that’s all Peony needed. She felt complete.

And therefore, she felt empty. She almost forgot that she was with others, before another voice interrupted her frantic train of thought. "Now what foul deep 'as set this fair princess into tears? Can I be of assistance?"

Peony gasped in surprise and jumped a little. “Oh!” Peony placed a hand on her chest, not sure what to say. First of all, what was a princess? Surely Mama had told her what a princess was but Peony still didn’t understand the idea. Was Mama a princess? She probably was, but it didn’t matter at the moment. Peony fought back the urge to cry again. “P-please….excuse my…” Peony thought and thought of what the word was Mama always told her to say when she wasn’t being a formal woman. “c-conduct…” Peony mumbled and bumbled out.

Peony was in awe at the gentlemen before her. She had never thought that there would be others like her—at least sort of like her. “M-my name is Peony.” She curtsied once more. “Y-you see, I’ve…lost mama…A-and I don’t know how to get back!” Peony cried out once again. She felt horrendous and unladylike, crying so hard in front of others—nice strangers that have stopped to notice her. “A-are you both from…around here? She asked, trying to be civil and she stared at the teapot "H-hullo," she said, before curtsying a final time, unsure if that was the right thing to do.

Whatever Septimus had done, he supposed he'd done it right, since the other Plague stopped its crying briefly at least. However, it soon began struggling with its words again, and Septimus began to despair. What else could he possibly defend it from? What else could he possibly do? He tried to remember what his brothers had done for him when he was upset, but he was so preoccupied with being upset at those times that he found he couldn't rightly remember. So he reached out to pat the other Plague sympathetically, settling on offering it his name, instead.

"It's not a problem, I'm an adventurer, so I'm professional at defending people." Was that true?? He had adventured more than any of his brothers today, but this was his first time, and he was pretty sure adventurers didn't worry about getting punished when they went home. He certainly didn't feel very adventurous anyway, but he felt safer around the Green Man, who was a real adventurer, so saying he was one too might help the crying Plague. "My name is Septimus. Who are you?"

A strange voice cut through his introduction, and he leapt at its offer of assistance. Just in time, he had no idea what he would have done if the other Plague kept crying! However, though help had arrived, things didn't get any easier for him. The two started using strange words like 'princess' and Septimus didn't want to admit he didn't know what they meant. Septimus only had to admit he didn't know things during Primus's lessons, he certainly didn't want strangers knowing he wasn't so clever. "That Fair Princess has misplaced his friend," he announced instead, echoing the strange name the new arrival had used for the Plague at his feet, "And I'm an adventurer from the forest who needs to, um..." He didn't want to admit he was scared or lost either, that was as bad as not knowing things! "Find a place to stay for the night so I can keep on adventuring tomorrow."

it sounded better than admitting he couldn't find the forest. Forests were kind of hard to miss, so he gloomily supposed it was just his terrible luck that had gotten him lost, as usual.
