User ImageWhere spring brought life, summer brought growth. Flowers that had been buds were now in full bloom. Foals that had been cocooned within wicker baskets had emerged and were now busy exploring the world and gaining their independence. And days that had been short and often cooled by rain, were now long and unbearably hot. At least for one certain mare it was.

The dark coat that covered Deirdre greedily absorbed the sun's rays, heating her body to levels that left her sweating and feeling faint. To avoid this from happening, she would often seek shelter in shaded areas. Standing back and watching the rest of the world go by, which was what she was doing now.Minus the standing.

She rested in the shade of a large tree, amidst the flowers that covered the ground beneath it. With each slow inhale, she took in the sweet scent of the flowers and allowing it to sooth her mind and aching heart.

The summer heat found Merric trying to avoid the sun's harsh rays, though the temptation to nose through the flowers in bloom was nearly irresistible. Despite the sweat that was beginning to soak through the teal fur of his coat, lighthearted steps took him into the open fields for the sole purpose of burying his nose in the daisies, a lackadaisical smile adorning his features. Braving the heat was worth the smell of the blossoms, and he stole a mouthful of the lush grass as his head lifted from the foliage.

Yes, the sun's heat was a small price to pay for a day like this. Although... a swim might make it even better.

Nodding to himself, pleased with the idea, the stallion tossed his head to free himself of the pollen he'd gathered on his fur and took off at a lively trot. The prospect of soaking himself in the cooling waters of a river spurred him on- as if he needed additional energy. Some of his herd complained that he never seemed to run out of it, but that was untrue... how else would he sleep? He might have had more energy than most, but he couldn't possibly be compared to a child in that respect.

That respect.

The grin that he wore turned slightly sheepish at his train of thought, though the idea really didn't bother him. So he was childish in some respects... children knew how to have fun better than adults, did they not? Merric thought it was an even trade-off, sacrificing maturity for the ability to amuse himself easily. It was rather unfortunate that it hadn't gained him any friends, but there was still plenty of time for that, and plenty of world left to explore. He hadn't run into anyone else outside of his herd for quite some time, but the thought didn't deter him.

Well... speak of the devil.

Light green eyes focused on a dark form resting under the shade of an oak, feet immediately bracing themselves against the dirt in an abrupt halt to his rapid pace. It was... a mare, Merric noted with surprise, and concern immediately seized the forefront of his mind. She wasn't on her feet... was she injured? Unconscious? Perhaps the heat had simply worn on her too much?

Swallowing the immediate line of questioning that leapt into his throat, Merric took one cautious step forward, eyeing the spotted mare closely. "Excuse me, Miss..? Are you all right?"

Purple orbs disappeared behind black eye lids as the dark mare buried her nose in the embrace of a flower's petals. A soft giggle escaped her as the petals tickled at her nose. Tendrils of her white curly mane mingled with the grass, twitching every now and then. Despite the heat, she loved days like these. Days where she could just relax and temporarily forget about the pain.

Dark ears pinned back when a voice intruded into her peace. The voice of a stallion. Already she could feel her body tensing. Cocking her head to the side, she allowed white locks of her mane to cascade down and cover her face. She peeked through the strands to warily eye the stallion.

Am I alright? The words were not spoken, just mouthed. One ear flicked, her gaze never leaving the brightly colored stallion. Confusion had her face scrunching up as she pondered why the stallion would ask her this. Did she come off as being physically injured? She doubted that this stallion could see her emotional scars with just a glance. No stallion was that perceptive.

"I..." Deirdre allowed her voice to trail off when it came out as little more than a whisper. It was such a natural reaction for her anymore. Speak low, keep your head down, and others leave you be. But she was getting tired of playing that game. "I am fine."

After a moment of hesitation she tacked on, "Thank you for your concern."

Relief was prominent in the young stallion's posture as she raised her head to speak to him, soothing his worries that she was injured. Perhaps she was simply enjoying the flora and the gentle breeze from the shadow of her tree... but there was something in her gaze that set him on edge. A wariness... of him? He couldn't imagine appearing intimidating, but stranger things had happened.

As teal eyes remained focused on the slivers of violet he could see through the curtain of her forelocks, Merric found himself undecided on what to say. Clearly, there was something wrong, but he couldn't pick out exactly what. She didn't appear hurt, and until he had happened upon her, she'd seemed somewhat content, but there was something there that he was reluctant to overlook- and she seemed reluctant to divulge.

Well, no one could ever accuse him of being subtle.

"Are you sure?" he implored, shifting his weight from one foot to the other in slight anxiety; the desire to do something, though he couldn't decide what, was making him uneasy. "I know I'm no one's favorite person to see, but if you give me a chance, I might surprise you." An earnest grin adorned his features as he tilted his head to one side, hoping to assuage the tense atmosphere with a joke. She looked like she could use an excuse to smile, whatever her problems might have been.

"My name's Merric!" he offered brightly, though he knew she hadn't asked. They had to start somewhere, right?

When the stallion remained rather than immediately departing, Deirdre found herself surprised once more. She would not be foolish enough as to say that she'd never encountered a gentleman during her time on this life, just that such stallions seemed to be a rarity. Her violet eyes watched his nervous shifting, amusement shining in their depths. Normally, it was the stallion making her nervous.

This show of uneasiness had some of the tenseness easing from the mare's body, though her face remained hidden behind her silver locks. "I am Deirdre, Merric.

"I believe that I can not make a judgement about whether you personally are not one I'd wish to see..." Deirdre's voice trailed off, her ears flopping back out of a sign of guilt. She knew how it felt to be unwanted, and to think that she may have made another feel that way was inexcusable. And was something that she needed to immediately rectify. "I... am not used to having the company of others."

Mindful, she purposefully used the word others rather than specifying stallions. She was also aware that she had no answered his question.

At the offering of her name, the teal stallion visibly brightened- though when she continued on to reassure him, the somber atmosphere about him seemed to evaporate completely, and the change was instantaneous. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Deirdre!" Were he a dog, Merric might have wagged his tail at the prospect of making a new friend- it wasn't as if dignity played a large part in his interactions, anyway.

It did not escape his notice that she had neatly skirted his other question, but the introduction was a start, and Merric could be patient. ...Sometimes. "Well, maybe I could help you get used to having someone else's company? It's not good for anyone to be alone for too long." Patient, he could be- subtle, he was not.

While his... 'sparkling' personality might not have made most aware, Merric was not unfamiliar to rejection, though outwardly, most times it would have appeared to roll off of his back. He wasn't unobservant, either- it was clear the mare, Deirdre, was seeking to spare his feelings, though it may have been unnecessary. She hadn't said or done anything that he would take personally, but it made him think that perhaps she had been in a similar position.

"So, what were you doing out here, Miss Deirdre?"

Miss Deirdre. It was a simple term tacked on to her name, and one that she'd heard from many stallions in the past. It was meant to be a sign of respect, yet for her it usually meant as a term of deception. The stallion would pretend to respect her while wooing her with pretty words, and then he would drop her like a bag of stones.

The urge was there, to flinch back from Merric. But, if she were to do so, she'd be losing ground rather than gaining it. One could not heal their soul if they constantly stepped backwards, rather than forward. Visibly steeling herself, she offered the stallion a tiny smile.

"I was enjoying the the flowers." Gently, she nosed at one of the blooms. "They smell lovely."

She eyed a nearby flower before hesitantly picking the flower. Ever so slowly, she offered it to the stallion.

Although he might have pretended obtuseness, Merric could sense the hesitance- it was hard to miss, in the air between them, and he fretted over how he might put her more at ease. It was odd, to begin with, that he should make anyone nervous- he often encountered aggravation, exasperation, consternation... strange how all of those words sounded alike, he wondered how many he could string together in a sentence.

Focus.

The teal stallion had just taken a breath in preparation to reassure her- although what he may have said, he did not know- when the petite mare lifted her head and offered him the barest of smiles. Instantly, an answering smile glimmered across his own features, and the muscles tensed in anxiousness over her wariness went slack with relief. When she commented on the delicate flowers about her, he had opened his mouth to agree when she turned and offered one to him.

Merric had only blinked in surprise for a moment before beaming so brightly he thought his face might crack, as his mother had always warned him. Jokingly, of course... having your face cracked in half by a smile in reality was just silly. It might be amusing to watch, though. "Thank you!" he interrupted his own thoughts before he could get sidetracked enough to forget what was going on. Carefully, he took the flower from her, almost reverently, before considering a moment.

"This'd probably suit you better, pretty as it is," he murmured around the stem in his mouth, eying her forelocks causally before nodding to himself and giving her another winning smile. Stepping forward- slowly, as not to alarm her- he pushed the stem through her ivory locks, backing away after a moment to admire his work. Grinning again, his own cerulean orbs met hers with a pleased glimmer. "Perfect! Wouldn't look half as good on me."

Though... after thinking a moment, he wouldn't mind proving that if it meant making her laugh. So, dramatically, he scooped up another flower, struggling with it a moment before managing to get it behind one ear, and looked back at her, adding a comical fluttering of eyelashes for effect. "What do you think?"
