Rising before the sun had come up Synestra was ready to start the day, even if she was feeling a little groggy still. Giving her legs a stretch, the small grey mare walked a short distance to where her two sons were sleeping. Gently she nudged her youngest Oloneric, attempting to rouse him from his sleep. She had planned this day out some time ago and was looking forward to sharing this opportunity with her nature loving son. Tomorrow, she would set aside and spend some quality time with Syrrin, but today it was Oloneric's turn.

"Wake up Olo." She whispered in the green colts ear, being careful not to wake any of the others. "There's something I wish to show you." There was no doubt in her mind that Oloneric would enjoy what she had in store for him, but first he needed to wake up and get moving. If they didn't get to the ridge in time then her plans would fall apart. Another nudge with her nose finally seemed to get through to the colt.

Deep within the realm of sleep Oloneric had no intention of waking up to that first nudge. Often his brother would shift in the night, bumping into him, so he had become accustomed to ignoring nudges and bumps so that he could sleep soundly. Hearing his mothers voice calling to him was what truly began to wake the small colt. With a small groan Oloneric slowly cracked on of his eyes open as his mother nudged him again. Lifting his head Oloneric's other eyes opened and then he realized it wasn't even morning yet. "But it's still dark." He whispered to her in a drowsy voice.

Couldn't what she wanted to show him wait a few more hours? Oloneric wasn't against mornings, but the sun wasn't even up yet and the rest of the herd was still asleep as well. It only took him a moment to catch a look in his mothers eyes that told him to stop complaining and get moving. Letting out a sigh Oloneric gathered his legs under himself and got to his feet. Giving his body a shake and letting out a very large yawn he turned to look at his mother and then nodded to let her know he was ready to go.

As Oloneric began to wake Synestra took a step back to allow her son room to get to his feet. She did feel bad for waking him up so early but what she wanted to show him could only be seen at a certain in of the day and that time was very, very early in the morning. "I know it's still dark. You can rest some one we get there." Once he was on his feet Syn gave him a loving nuzzle. "Now let's get going, it's not too far to get there. We must be sure not to wake the others." And so she turned and began to lead him out of the small grove the herd used to sleep in and towards the ridge.

The pace was slow as Oloneric was clearly still drowsy but he would certainly perk up soon enough. She kept encouraging him, telling him it was only a little bit farther. And in fact that was the truth, there in front of them was the ridge. "Look it's just up there." Syn told her son before giving him a nudge. There was a bit of an incline to the hill, so she walked behind him now to ensure he didn't lose his footing and fall. Once they reached the top Synestra found a nice flat area and laid down. "Lay down, it shouldn't be long now. Just don't fall asleep." She said with a laugh, it would be a shame if he missed out after finally getting here.

Oloneric followed his mother in silence as they began to make their way to wherever it was she was taking him. He was ever so slightly jealous that his brother got to stay behind and sleep more, but getting to spend some one on one time with his mother was always a great experience. It was hard work at first to keep up as his legs wished nothing more than to lay down and rest but he pushed on, his mothers encouraging words fueling his steps. As he became more awake he wondered just what they were going to see.

With a little help he made it to the top of the ridge and settled down beside his mother. "Don't worry, I won't fall asleep." Now that they had reached their destination he was too excited to see what was to come to even think about sleeping.

Slowly light began to peak over the horizon. Oloneric perked up. Out of no where a swarm of bats flew overhead, heading to a nearby cave to sleep for the day. He flicked slightly, only because he wasn't expecting that to happen but quickly settled down. Just as he was about to say something when the sky filled with vibrant oranges, yellows and reds as the tip of the sun made it appearance. The last few bats raced across the sky above, seeking the shelter. "Wow." He whispered, in awe of the morning sky. He had never gotten up early enough to see a sunrise before but was now thinking that being woke up early this morning wasn't a half bad thing.

The morning did not disappoint. Certainly worth waking up early, and the look on Olo's face as the sun painted the sky was priceless. Letting out a content sigh Synestra gave her son a nuzzle. "I'm glad you like it. It sure is beautiful isn't it?" In her travels she had seen plenty of sunrise and sunsets, but the ones here on the ridge that were so close to home seemed to be the most beautiful of all. Perhaps it wasn't the sunrise itself, but more knowing that there was something special at home. As much as she loved to travel and see new places this would always be her home and having things like this to appreciate while she was here made it all worth while.

"There are so many wonderful things to see in nature, and you can never know just what you will find. Some things can be found close to home, others you have to travel far in order to discover." There were two reasons she had brought Oloneric up here, one was so he could see the sunrise and the other was to have a little chat about his life direction. Yes he was young still but even foals needed some guidance. "There's more to life than just insects Olo. I know they are interesting and it's good to have interests like that, but don't restrict yourself to one thing. Make sure you go out and see the world...when you're older of course." She didn't want him running off to see the world when he was still so young, though honestly Oloneric was not the type to deliberately run off.

He gave his mother a nuzzle in return. "It is beautiful." Even now the splash of colors was just amazing. Not only that but the land below was doused in the light as well, making the lakes and rivers look a vibrant red-orange. Yellow light filtered through the trees, and the few clouds in the sky were an odd, but interesting grey-pink color. Slowly he turned his eyes towards his mother. He knew there was plenty to see in nature, he loved nature, but at the time he was really restricted on how far he could wander to see all those things. He didn't like wandering off alone, but he couldn't always convince a herd member to go with him either.

"I know." The world was a huge place that had tons of things for him to see and learn about, but being so small somewhat restricted what he could do. At least with insects they were small, easy to follow and didn't pose much danger to him. "It's just...it's kind of hard to do stuff sometimes. Everything is so much bigger than me." He knew his mother rarely let her size get in her way of doing something, but she had been young once and being this small was an even greater challenge.

She understood where he was coming from. Many times as a foal she had struggled to do things because her small size was such a hindrance. Yet as she grew Syn had learned that even being small had it's advantages and while it may take some extra work she could do almost anything a full sized Soquili could. "I know it's hard. But trust me it will get a bit easier with time. Once you find the rhythm of life you will see that your size can't hold you back." She had faith he would find his way, it would just take some time, but time he had.

"I was going to take a trip in a few days to go see your father. I know Syrrin will be coming along, did you want to come to? Maybe he can let you stay with him for a few days. I know you've been missing him lately." As much as she wished Orrin could be a bit more involved in the boys lives she also knew he had a life of his own and appreciated the time he did have for them.

Oloneric listened to his mothers words carefully. They did speak to him, let him know that it wouldn't always be a struggle. There may be things that he might never be able to do, flying was one of them, but he would have to be okay with that. There were so many other wonderful things in life to experience that not being able to do one or two of them shouldn't be the reason to hold back on everything. "Thanks mom." Pushing his nose into her neck, giving her a small nuzzle to show his appreciate that she understood where he was coming from.

Mention of visiting father made his head snap up in excitement. A smile danced across his lips and Olo couldn't help but nod enthusiastically. "Oh yes, I would like to go." He had been missing his father greatly, and had likely drove several herd members crazy by constantly asking if any of them know when his father would come and visit next. "I hope he lets me stay, I would really like to do that. I'd be on my best behavior." He added in hopes that would help convince her that it would be a good idea.

Lowering her head Synestra gave her son a loving nuzzle in return. Olo was such a sweet little boy and she could only hope he would remain so as he grew into an adult. "I understand these things well, I went through a lot of what you are when I was growing up. Don't ever hesitate to come and talk to me if you are having troubles with something." She told him in a motherly tone. While she had started to go out and venture once more now that she had the boys those trips were short, usually only spanning a few hours instead of a few days. It wasn't that she didn't love her sons, but one could not deny the call of wanderlust even when they had a family to tend to. It was why she was grateful to live in the herd they did, with her father and sister, and other herd members as well, to be there for the boys when she couldn't be.

Seeing him light up suddenly brought a smile to her. The bond between son and father was strong even when Orrin lived far away and didn't get to spend a lot of time with them. Syn couldn't help but let out a laugh. "I have no doubt that you will be on your best behavior, it's your brother I'm worried about." She loved Syrrin but some days that colt tested her patience, in a way he reminded Syn of herself at that age as bold as ever. Chances are her own father had felt the same that she felt some times watching Syrrin run off. "I'm sure that as long as he is not busy he will let you stay for a little while." By now the sun had risen above the trees bathing even more of the land in it's light. The herd was likely starting to get out and set out on their daily routines but she was willing to spend a bit more time with Olo before heading back. "Is there anything special you would like to do today?"
PostPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 9:10 am

"I'll try to remember that." It wasn't that he didn't want to talk to his mother, or other herd members for that matter, about his problems or if he was having a bad day. It was just that he was shy and felt embarrassed about going up to them for such things. He knew it was normal, the herd was extremely helpful and understanding since they were all Usdia, with the exception of Aunt Mercy, so they had likely all experienced these things at one point of their lives or even continued to do so. For now he focused on talk of visiting his father. Olo gave his head a nod. "I hope he's not busy." He admitted softly and then continued. "And I'll try not to let Syrrin talk me into doing something I shouldn't." Olo couldn't help it sometimes, they were brothers and though he knew some things were wrong to do the constant prodding from his brother propelled him to do them.

His eyes turned to the lands before them, the trees, meadow and small lake that sat below the ridge they currently rested upon. What could be more special than this beautiful spot and sharing it with his mother? Olo was hard pressed to think of anything better, so with a content sigh he looked over at her. "I'd like to stay here for a little bit longer." He was certain his mother wouldn't argue with that, this moment was as special as they came and so he would much rather stay here than do something else, even if that something else would have likely involved a bit of bug hunting - hunting being a relative term of course.

Syn gave her son a stern yet still motherly look. "I should hope you think twice before letting your brother talk you into anything. I know it's fun to play with him but Syrrin doesn't always think things through. I worry about you both, especially when I see you two going off somewhere." She couldn't ever remember talking her own brother into doing such things when they were foals, but then again she had been quite independent even back then, so bringing her brother along wasn't really part of the equation. "Don't let your love of fun cloud your judgment when it comes to your brother. He will eventually learn that things can't always happen how he wants them to." Or so she hoped. One of these days she would need to pull Syrrin aside and have a private talk with him, not to scold him for being a playful and outgoing foal, but to remind him that there are dangers in the world and he needs to be mindful of them and others around him.

She smiled and gave her head a slight nod. "Alright, we can stay here for a bit." There was no reason to make him go elsewhere or do something else. If he wanted to remain on the ridge for now then she was more than happy to stay here. Had he wanted to do some exploring or something else, again she would have done so. This time was all about him and his choices are what they would do. They would need to head back in a little while, if only to let the others know they were safe, but for now she lowered her head down and enjoyed taking in the scenery and quiet time with Olo.

Ears pulled back a bit at the almost scolding. Olo knew better than to listen to his brother most days, but even a quiet foal like him was bound to get lured by the idea of having fun, especially when that fun involved his brother, that he would often forget things. Such were the joys of growing up, learning what was and wasn't the right thing to do at a certain time, learning who to trust and who not to, developing relationships that would see him through his life. It was all a big learned curve and Olo was still getting into the flow of it sometimes. "I know." He said in a quiet voice, taking her words to heart. He would try to think before rushing off with his brother next time. It wouldn't mean that he would stop playing with Syrrin, but he would certainly consider the consequences before doing so.

Giving his mother a nuzzle as she lowers her head down, Olo glanced out at the world before him. Though it was only a small part of the lands that all Soquili lived in Oloneric couldn't help but think it was huge and held a lot of potential. One day, when he was older, he might explore so of the lands beyond the herds territory, not just to see new faces but to experience what his mother often did when she traveled. By then he would know better of the dangers of the lands and be sure to avoid them, but for now he was content to stay here, at home where he knew the way of things.

After a few moments of laying here with Olo taking in the lands Syn had to admit it was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. She may love to explore, adventure and meet new Soquili but one could not deny the simple pleasures of life. And having a quiet moment with her son was one of them, even if they were just sitting her looking out at the trees and meadows. Sometimes one had to step back out of their normal routine to truly appreciate things, and today was no exception to that. Closing her eyes Syn listened to the sounds of nature all around them, birds chirping in the trees, squirrel skittering around looking for nuts, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves and the splash of something in the lake below.

It was so relaxing that she actually ended up falling sleep for a few minutes. With a snort Syn lifted her head suddenly and looked to see Olo asleep as well. Gently she nosed the colt. "Come on sleepy head, we better get back before the others wonder where we are." She made sure Olo was awake before turning and leading the way down the ridge, heading towards home.

Oloneric let out a yawn and gave his body a bit of a shake as he quickly got to his feet. He couldn't believe that he had fallen asleep. But from the looks of it so had his mother and he smiled at that. They had woken up early enough that having a short nap wasn't completely out of the question. "Okay." He took one last long final look out across the lands from the vantage point that the ridge gave him before turning and following his mother. Today had been a great day, even if it had started a little too early for his liking, sometimes those turned out to be the best days of all. The surprise that his mother had showed him today would be treasured forever and he hoped that would be able to do this again sometime. Just not too soon because he did like his sleep quite a bit.
