Being at Amityville meant that Taryn was allowed to practice her culinary skills as much as she wished. It had eaten a few minutes into her allotted study time, and she felt delightfully rebellious. Of course, once finished she was left with a full two dozen spookies that she could by no means eat herself; they'd just sit in the minifridge and get cold and chalky, and that was a heck of a waste. The chimera turned to sharing and was on her way to the lobby of the monster dorms to leave her plate. She would come back later to retrieve what she hoped would be an empty dish and return it to her room.

The spookies were a new recipe, full of spice and iridescent Splodey eyes, and the ghoul had indulged in a couple herself before deciding that they were good enough to put her name on (figuratively). She had no actual plans to leave her name, that would get some creepy replies, she was sure. Instead, she clip-clopped down the stairs with the treats piled on a plain black plate, still slightly warm from the oven.

Well, to be perfectly honest, Roch was bored. That's why he found himself in the monster dorm, looking around with rapt curiosity. So... basically he'd broken in, although not technically since the door hadn't been locked or anything. But still--this place was a hell of a lot more interesting than the reaper dorm!

He paused at a particularly strange sight, tilting his head to the right, then the left, a slight thoughtful frown on his face as he tried to figure out exactly WHAT that was, and more importantly, how in the hell had they gotten it to happ--

He jerked, his nose twitching. Did he smell fresh baked spookies?? He turned, following his nose and stopping in front of a rather... interesting looking female with a plate in her hands.

"Helllooooo," he said, shoving his hands in his pockets and grinning at her. "What do you have there?" Which, had he been the monster and she the reaper, would have seemed straight out of the bloody fairy tale, Little Bloody Riding Hood.

Uh oh. This boil certainly didn't look like a monster, and he was bigger and more intimidating than Taryn was used to (even with the giants in her dorm). He reminded her a little of her bullies in earlier schools, actually, and that made her nervous. Her social life had been going so well so far...

"Um...!" the ghoul peeped, sounding much weaker than she had meant to, "Spookies..." She was more than ready to drop the plate and run off, potentially crying. People didn't generally pop around corners with good intentions.

"They smell awesome!" he said, his attention on the plate. "Hey, did you bake them? Because I tried baking spookies once and they came out smelling like burnt hair for some reason," he said, frowning slightly as he tried to explain it. "Mixed with a hint of mint, which actually made it more sickening, cuz I hadn't added any mint."

He shoved the thought away, offering one hand. "I'm Roch. What's your name?" She was kind of cute once you got used to the various... parts mixed together. But what was more important was that she could bake!

"Tha-- oh...!"

This boil talked a lot, and he said a lot when he did. There was a great deal to absorb. Taryn could only watch with wide eyes as this reaper rambled about his own culinary attempts. Mint? Burned hair was more easily explainable... but mint? What in the world tasted like mint...?

The ghoul's train of thought was interrupted when the boil thrust his hand out. For a moment Taryn thought that he was going to just snatch her spookies out of her hand and spill them on the floor. He kind of looked the type. For a time all she did was stare at Roch's hand before she realized what he was really doing and hesitantly reached out her own hand, having to carefully balance the plate on the other. "Taryn..."

"Nice to meetcha," Roch said, shaking her hand. His attention kept going to the plate, but he wasn't staring at it blatantly. "Oh, um, I'm blocking your way," he said, turning to let her go past. He wanted to see what she was doing with that particular plate. "Sorry, didn't mean to talk your ears off."

He looked at her curiously, not the cookies. "Are you a chimera?" he asked abruptly. "I think I met one before, but it's been a long, long time." But watch him be wrong, he thought. Then he'd look like a serious idiot--oh wait, the mint comment already did that.

Taryn scurried around Roch like he might change his mind at any moment and strike out at her. Of course, she hadn't wagered that she'd be just as nervous with him behind her where she couldn't see him as when she could. This whole stranger danger thing was complicated.

"Yes," she replied, turning over her shoulder to glance at the boil. He still didn't seem to be threatening her. She continued down the stairs with some more confidence and spoke without looking to the boil. "You're a reaper...?"

"Yeah," he said, shoving his hands deep in his pockets as he followed her. "I'm a grim reaper," he added, just to make things clear. "I didn't realize there were so many other types of reapers until I got here," he admitted. "It's pretty cool." His eyes were drawn to her snake tail, which he watched curiously for a few moments. "Has ah... your tail ever bit anyone?" he asked.

He sure was talkative when there were spookies involved, wasn't he? Or maybe he was actually worried about getting bit. Because, seriously, that would suck, especially considering the level that the snake was on.

Taryn was not very up-to-speed with the different types of reapers. They had different power sets, she thought or... something like that. All she could do was nod politely as Roch spoke, although when he mentioned Abigail she perked and turned to look at him.

"No," the chimera responded, although her tail's looming could easily be understood as threatening. Even at her very most angry, Abigail hadn't... successfully bitten anyone.

As they walked, the real reason Roch was following Taryn became more clear. He wasn't here to tease or even to pleasantly chat, he wanted the spookies. This in mind, as Taryn reached the lobby and put the plate down on a small round table, she picked one up from beneath the plastic and offered it out to him. It was still warm from the oven.

He gave her a brilliant grin, taking the spookie happily. "Thank you!!" he said as he bit into it. "Oh, man, this is good," he said as he swallowed his bite. "Seriously good. You should be a professional or something, it's that good," he told her, finishing off the spookie and licking his fingers.

"Hey, I gotta ask, cuz I've only got one club so far--is there a cooking club or something? You know, cuz you should definitely be in one if there is!"

And he should definitely be in it, too, cuz someone needed to appreciate spookies like that on a regular basis! He reached down, picking a crumb off his vest and tossing it into his mouth.

Taryn couldn't help but smile at the boil's pleasant (if not outright gleeful) reaction. She hadn't thought much of her experimental baking or her desire to share it with others, but if they would be this happy...

Why, she could probably make new friends like this! This wasn't quite bribery, and a little nudge in the friendly direction wasn't amoral, was it?

The chimera ghoul blushed under her already-ruddy complexion and shook her head slightly.

"I don't know..." she said softly, "I haven't really researched the clubs..." As Taryn about a class and she'd probably be able to tell you the days it went on. Clubs, though? Clubs had always been for the other kids, for the cool kids. A food club, though... that would be nice with the after-school requirement...

"How about this," Roch said, unzipping his vest and pulling out his eyephone. "You and me, we'll both keep our eyes out for cooking clubs, and when one of us finds it, we'll tell the other," he said. "You got groanspring?" he asked, typing on his phone quickly. "I can add you to my friends, and you could send it over that or just text me."

Cooking club, cooking club! Oh, this was gonna be awesome! But... what if they didn't have one? "Oh! Hey, you know who would probably know for sure?" he asked her. "That Junko ghoul. She did all the food for prom, and she had these awesome spookies and fish snacks at her booth before that jackin' fearados destroyed it. I'll send her a groanspring asking."

"Groanspring...?" Taryn asked, completely oblivious to the fad that had crossed the internet Halloween-wide. There wasn't much reason for her to be on the internet than studying, she thought, and she had never tarried to the more socially-apt internet applications. She watched Roch's phone as he typed rapidly, having no idea what was going on. Her own flipped open, and certainly didn't have a touch screen...

"I don't have a groanspring," she amended quietly, looking back up to the boil's face. "I can text, though. Who's June-Ko?" She had been at prom, but hadn't really gotten into the finer mechanics of it, like the catering (although she had certainly enjoyed the food).

"She's this lady with really really long black hair. She's running for vice president of the student council," he said, finishing up his groanspring question and hesitating at her reply. "How about just giving your number and I'll call you when I find out, or you can call me if you find out first?" he said, recovering extremely quickly. He rattled off his number for her, then waited expectantly for her to tell him hers.

If it were any other boil this would so look like he was hitting on her. But with Roch it was pretty clear what he was thinking. Especially after his reaction to the spookie.

Taryn might have been more hopeful of Roch's affections if she had any idea what flirting was like. Instead, she only saw a very excited, very hungry boil. She nodded, having seen this June-Ko's adverts and her booth at the festival, but never having met her personally.

"Okay," she responded and rattled off her own number. She didn't have her phone with her, but she had a pretty decent memory. Hopefully the number would retain itself all the way back up to her room.
