Kaym'itan ran his paw thru his shaggy mane, causing the crimson feather on the end to flutter about as if pulled along by the breeze that was barely stirring the tops of the apxangrr leaves where they wound around Home tree's base. It was warm...ok..it was hot. Very hot.
Used to the temperate nights, the large night scout was unaccustomed to the daytime warmth of the jungle, usually sleeping away the worse of the heat in the hammock shared by his mate...his beautiful mate...and their nine cubs. The thought made him smile, nine cubs. Eywa had truly blessed them!
However, today found him awake right after the mid-day meal, waiting for one of his daughters. He'd made a promise to teach her to swim before he taught her brothers to, and Eywa help him if he broke that. So, he was up after only a scant few hours worth of sleep, waiting for one of the nannies to bring her down so they could go about the swimming lesson and some quality dad daughter time.

Excitement showed itself in the form of a wide grin on Kaym'itan's daughter as she made her way across the thick foliage and trees of the jungle with one of the baby sitters. If there was one thing she was enthusiastic about, it was learning, and her father had promised her a lesson! When the baby sitters were teaching her and her siblings about the Iknimaya's land and the roles of the individuals within it, she had been particularly struck by the scope of her father's scouting duties. From that day on, she swore to be able to do everything he did by the time she reaches adulthood. She was his silent admirer - though she rarely saw him in the days, his wisdom and strength always awed her when he did spend time with them.
As soon as she saw her father's dark blue figure in the distance, she dashed forth immediately, forgetting all about her escort through the grounds. When she reached him, she neither shouted his name excitedly nor gave a loud greeting, but instead beamed up at him, savoring the rare moment of his private company.
"Tashik," she spoke softly yet with admiration and love, "You are here!"
Not that she ever doubted her father, but it was indeed rare to see him at this hour.
"Are we going now?"

Kaym'itan chuckled at her, bringing a huge paw up to ruffle her fur on top her head, making sure he was incredibly gentle with her. She was still so small, but she'd grow. He was sure she'd have all the beauty and grace of her mother, but he secretly hoped Kalin'ite would have his strength. He saw a lot of himself in her, and it made him proud.
Giving her a lick on the the ear, he grinned at her, his deep voice rumbling somewhere deep in his chest, "Of course I did. I promised a swimming lesson, did I not?"
He gave the nanny, who had come up behind the cub a nod, silently letting her know that he had Kalin and was taking her now. Laughing at his daughter's obvious enthusiasm, he picked her up by her scruff and flipped her onto his back, " Yes we are, the pond is a little way into the trees here, we will be traveling along the lower branches, so hold on tight Kalin'ite."

Even though she was the one in her litter least likely to look for attention, Kalin'ite could not deny how great she felt to receive her father's affection. She observed his paw as it came to ruffle her head, seeing the hardened years of wear and tear on it; they definitely were unlike the soft and gentle paws of her mother, and that was what she liked about him. Like her father, Kalin'ite would be poised, experienced, and skillful in the jungles and areas outside of their main home.
She nodded when he confirmed their lesson, still in a little excited daze that this was happening. She and her father! Her own private lesson. She still didn't notice the lioness who had brought her here had walked right behind her and left within just a few seconds; obviously she had a lot to learn in observing one's environment.
As her father moved her, she giggled and played with the back of his mane a little, taking care to not actually pull out any of his mane, even though some of his hair was messy. She picked out a leaf that had lodged its way in there, giggling again that her father was a little unkempt and disorderly as far as manes went. But then again, she could say the same for her brothers.
"The pond!" she repeated, though she did not know which, and then realized by his next words why he picked her up to put on his back.
Kalin'ite prepared herself, watchful of her father's quickness and ability to go through the tree branches so well and without fault! She had never seen him trip over himself, anyways, but she was sure he never did that on one of his missions.
"Let's go, dad!" she exclaimed as she huddled closer down in latching onto Kaym'itan, holding his mane in her paws. She wasn't sure how fast he would actually go, but she started to close her eyes in case she needed, taking a peek every few seconds to see if it was safe.
"Too bad you can't teach me how to fly!" she spoke during the trip; if it was any consolation, this was the closest flying lesson Kaym'itan could have ever given Kalin'ite.

Kaym'itan's laughed filled the jungle as his daughter wound her small paws into his mane. He was happiest when he was with his cubs, for he and their mother had become..strained with each other. He loved her as he had before, with ever thing that was in his heart, she was still his atokirina the one that Ewya had brought to him, and he could not understand where things had gone wrong. A sad look came into his scarlet eyes and he was glad his child could not see it.
Shaking the thought from his mind, he dashed through the lower branches as fast as he dared, shifting his weight from side to side to keep his daughter settled on his back without fear of falling.
" When you are bigger and stronger 'eveng I will teach you to fly over the top branches, were you will never see the ground and all you will see is the sky Eywa has blessed us with."
