The Eternal Senshi of Danger was now used to his father saying for him to not go out and look for trouble. And yet every night, that was exactly what he did. He went out looking for monsters or Negas up to no good. He looked for trouble to keep people safe.
Another good reason not to listen to parents, as far as the teenager was concerned.
It was a little earlier than he was used to, but since he was on the rooftops it hardly mattered. Even in the early evening light, ever darkening as it was, he doubted anyone would see him unless he wanted them to. He was standing tall and strong at the top of an old looking building. He wasn't sure what it was, maybe some city government thing or whatever. It hardly mattered to him.
It had gargoyles on it, and it was a fun place to stand.
Looking down over the city, he was hoping for something fun. Recently he had seen a lot of senshi and done a lot of sparring, but tonight he was hoping to spend some time with his number one. Himself. Though he esteemed himself rather highly, he still needed to keep his skills sharp. He didn't call it training, of course. It was just...
Looking for trouble.

Ian sat outside the library on the top step, skimming the pages of a disappointingly dry history of tai chi and related martial arts. He had wanted to finish the book in the library so he would not have to bother with checking it out, particularly since he was sure that it was not something he would need for two weeks, but closing time had come before he had gleaned the information he wanted. He had made a point of coming on one of the days that Mister Darrow would be there, hoping that knowing the librarian would give him perhaps half an hour more time if he needed it, but his friend was nowhere to be found.
Maybe it was his worry about where, exactly, Mister Darrow might be that was making this book so difficult to get through.
The red-haired boy sighed and fixed his glasses, flipping to the index to check one more thing. Then he could just slip it into the book return slot and not have to worry about forgetting it at home in a fortnight when it was actually due.
... The steps were still well-lit by the night-time lights shining through the lobby, as well as the nearby street lights, but Ian realized he was not so sure how the lighting was around the side of the building, where the after-hours return slot was. He finished his reading and stood up, picking up his messenger bag, and crept with great caution to the corner of the library building to peer around it.
Coffee or not, Ian was mildly irritated with himself that he was so much more jumpy, even now some months after he had been attacked by the crazy woman with a stick. He took a deep breath and went around the corner into the partial darkness. Just returning one book, sheesh.

Chaonis saw someone sitting outside the library, a few buildings down the street. He wondered for a moment if it was the person responsible for putting Tony in the hospital, but he couldn't be sure. Of course, the fact that it had no energy signature whatsoever was probably a hint.
Chaonis really doubted anything normal had happened. It had to be youma or Nega related.
He watched as the person, who was reading, got up to return his book. Grumbling, Chaonis made to leave, but saw something moving in the shadows. There was always something. It didn't seem too large, but a youma was better than nothing. It was headed the guy's way, apparently not a fan of returning books on time.
Or early, as the case may be.
Chaonis moved to follow, wanting to fight the youma but not feeling too keen on helping the civilian. That logic was tough to figure out, as he was upset his civilian father had been attacked but now wouldn't be fused if someone else was as well. Or something.

Ian walked carefully, taking some comfort in knowing that at least there was no one else around to see him stepping so lightly. He thought he saw something move out of the corner of his eye, and shied from the shadows, but then reassured himself that it was probably nothing.
But it was definitely not his imagination when he opened the book drop and saw eyes peering back at him. Faintly glowing, pale purple eyes.
The boy just stared for a moment, then hurriedly shoved the book through the slot into the return, slammed it shut, and backed away.
Several metallic thuds sounded from within the wall of the library before the book return flipped open again, and something like a snake shot out and down the bricks to the pavement, then straight across the ground towards the boy. Ian's backside quickly encountered the wall opposite the book return, and he raised one foot as his eyes followed the movement of the creature as he tried to find the perfect moment to try to stomp on the monster's head.
He dearly hoped this thing would not actually want to fight him or anything. But it seriously looked like it. Ian was nearly irritated. This, again? Thoughts of bruises, more broken bones, more school missed ... maybe even poison from this snake creature, filled his mind.
"Damn it!" he shouted as needle-sharp teeth sank into his ankle. Distracted. Had to keep from getting distracted! Ian tried to kick the youma.

If Tony had been the one watching, or rather Camelot, he might have been pleased and impressed that Ian still found time to return the book properly before reacting fully to the danger that was lingering inside. It demonstrated a specific kind of character, and a level of respect, that was becoming of a young man.
Chaonis, for his part, thought the guy was a real nerd right off the bat. Who would put a book in a drop that was clearly inhabited by something dangerous? Drop the damn book and get out of there.
"I wouldn't do that," Chaonis said, drawing close enough to drop down near Ian as he tried to defend himself against the youma that had taken such an interest in him. The senshi of Danger wondered why the guy looked familiar. Or maybe he was just rolling faces of people looking scared together.
And annoyed apparently. Why did he look annoyed already?
He looked down at the snake, frowning at it. His reaction was slow, and it allowed the thing to bite Ian on the ankle. Whoops. He moved to stomp on it in an effort to get it to release its hold. If this guy got poisoned there was no way Chaonis was going to suck it out. Or pee on him. Was that a snake thing? Chaonis wasn't great with animals.

"Are you here to beat me up, too?" Ian asked as the senshi in white armor appeared, his voice pitched high with upset and no small measure of anger. He backed away from the snake youma again, as quickly as he could manage, along the wall, all the while trying to keep an eye out for something that he might be able to use as a weapon. Attempting to step on it using the same feet he was using for standing served to remind Ian that there was a reason he was quite poor at Dance Dance Revolution, but he was not about to dive down to the asphalt and wrestle the thing with his bare hands or anything like that, either.
Much as the primal part of his mind urged him to throw himself onto the ground and roll around clutching his throbbing ankle.
"Is this yours?" he continued, between breaths - several weeks of tai chi had put the red-haired boy in slightly better shape, but Ian was still no athlete. "Are you here to help it? Or help me?" He put distance between himself and the stranger, as well, fearful that the taller young man was not, in fact, here to help.
Ian had suffered at the hands of the Negaverse on several occasions already, and the only reassurance he had received from the senshi so far had come from a little girl who had offered to walk him two blocks to a bus stop. And now this newcomer had appeared - senshi by the collar? Ian did not exactly have a field guide or anything - and had not yet leapt in to aid him yet. Who could blame the boy for being untrusting?

Chaonis shook his head. Civilians could be so silly sometimes, what with their fear of tiny youma and their inability to not scream when they were in danger. It was annoying, really.
Still, he had to protect them. Annoying or not.
"Mine? No. Is it yours? Cause if you're just having a fight with your pet I'm not going to waste my time and all that," he frowned. What a stupid question to ask someone who was obviously there to help. What about Chaonis could possibly say anything else?
Besides his attitude, body language, and most of the things he said.
Rolling his eyes, he moved toward the youma.
"Just try not to get in the way, huh?" He said over his shoulder, moving suddenly to deliver a swift, hard kick at the youma's head. He wanted to handle things quickly and easily, and maybe with some awesomeness just to really rub it in.

It was really not so obvious to Ian that the guy with the goggles was there to help. Especially with the way he spoke. He was normally not one to get angry, but with all of the recent attacks he had suffered, having a magical stranger show up and talk down to him like that, and then have the nerve to tell him to get out of the way? The red-haired boy's gears were more than a little ground.
"I live here, too," Ian grumbled, then more loudly, "Right, out of the way...." He half-wished he still had his book so he could try to swat at the snake with it. Then he felt a faint pang of guilt - that was no way to treat a library book. Did this quite qualify as life-or-death yet?
With another surprised shout, he hopped back out of the way of the youma's tail as it lashed around after being kicked. Then Ian's arms windmilled as his ankle, which was starting to feel numb around where the snake-monster had bitten it, gave out under him, spilling him unceremoniously to the pavement. He dearly hoped this stranger would not want to turn on him after the snake was dead, because the red-haired boy was not sure he could run. Still, he fought to keep panic down for the moment, and kept inching backwards, away from the fight, as well as he could manage on the ground.

Chaonis heard the panic and craziness behind him, slowly turned to see Ian flailing and falling. He did not move to help him keep his balance, though he had a moment in there where he was perfectly capable of it.
Instead, he stared at Ian with an expression that was easy to read. His lofted eyebrow and thin lipped smirk, the mischievous look in his eyes: he was ready to mock Ian for falling over.
"One foot in front of the other," he instructed, his tone flat and teacherly. Like Ian really had forgotten how to walk, the silly boy. "You'll get it one day, with practice."
The snake youma hadn't liked being kicked, and it slithered its way back for a second wound with the senshi of danger. Chaonis turned to see it, just in time for it to pull back and then strike at him. He caught it but it forced him to the ground, barely missing Ian as he was scooting away. Chaonis was all business after that, rolling and trying to pin the slithering youma under him. It slipped out, though, and whirled around in time to sink its fangs into Chaonis' shoulder as he was getting ********!" He yelled, suddenly not sure his heroic efforts were paying off for him. He hated, absolutely hated, getting hurt in the line of duty. It was all well and good when he could beat a youma without hurting himself, but the moment one of those brainless, useless things did him damage he felt like he was pathetic, and he was embarrassing himself.
He could not stand being embarrassed.
In a rage, he pulled the snake from his shoulder and hurled it into the side of the library with all his strength.

Ian scowled at the senshi's snarking. All those times when he had needed help and not gotten it, and now here one of the senshi had finally come and was nothing but patronizing to him. The red-haired boy regretted wanting help now, wishing he had somehow been the one with magic powers so he could protect himself. So he would not have to rely on senshi who either never came, or treated him like crap for not being "special" in this war, himself. It was not like he wanted to be a target or a victim in all this. He highly doubted anyone did.
His anger gave him renewed energy, and Ian was determined to show that he was not just another fearful civilian. Because he was, and it pissed him off. Fighting the feeling of numbness, keeping his footing as steady as he could manage while unable to feel one foot, he got to a crouching position.
The snake youma hit the wall when Chaonis threw it, and Ian found its momentarily stunned body landing beside him. Or close enough to make him shy away by reflex, at least. But instead, he lunged at it, bringing one fist down towards its head while it was still trying to shake off being dazed from the previous impact. Ian knew it would hurt if he hit anything but the snake, but right now, he did not care.
And his fist contacted scales, smashing downwards. The youma, its fangs apparently having broken off when Chaonis had pulled it out of his shoulder so roughly, settled for spitting more of its poison at Ian.
A tingling sensation raced up his outstretched arm where the dark droplets of poison touched bare skin, but the youma started to dissolve under the boy's fist.
Ian blinked at it, half-surprised at himself. And then started trying to scrub the poison drops (no longer visible) from his skin on the fabric of his pants.

Chaonis arced an eyebrow as the civilian took out his aggression on the snake youma. The thing did deserve it. Of course, it was Chaonis' fault Ian was so angry in the first place, but that fact seemed to be lost on the senshi.
Rubbing his shoulder, Chaonis tried to take a look at the damage left by the snake.
"Ugh, gross," he mumbled, watching as the remains of the fangs turned into dust and stuck to the blood that was running from the bite wound. At least he didn't have to worry about digging the things out later.
His arm was starting to feel tingly.
"See? Told you you could do it."
Of course, he hadn't said any such thing. He told Ian not to get in the way, and mocked him. He sat down, still rubbing his shoulder ruefully. "So you're welcome. I mean, got myself bitten by that thing for you. Softened it up, too. You just had to do the last hit, which is cake. So. You're welcome."

Ian stopped fidgeting as feelings of pins and needles took hold of his ankle and arm. One eyelid twitched, either at the discomfort of the sensation, or perhaps at his anger. It was really not like the red-haired boy to get so angry, but being repeatedly targeted by creatures beyond his own plain human abilities really ground his gears. Anyone could get assaulted on the street anywhere, but only in Destiny City did ordinary people get attacked by those with outright magical powers. And they usually ended up soundly thrashed, if the reports on the news were any indication.
And now here was one of the supposed fighters for good, or so Ian had been led to believe, rubbing it in his face that he had powers that the smaller boy did not.
"Thank you," Ian said flatly, shooting a glance at the senshi. "Not all of us have such wonderful powers, and get hurt for no reason at all in this stupid war of yours." He wanted to stand up and leave now, stop having to look at this glory-hound's smirking face, and take care of his scrapes somewhere where the high and mighty magical folk could not laugh at him. But the bespectacled boy was not certain yet his leg would hold him. Frowning, he looked away from the senshi and stared instead at the wall of the side of the library, rubbing his ankle with one hand.

"Not my war," Chaonis said with a shrug, "I just fight in it, just the same as you. You think whining at me because you don't have magic is going to make me feel bad for you? I hear the same kind of stuff from people who do have powers, and don't feel bad for them. And they're my friends."
He used the term loosely, it seemed, as it would be hard to believe he had friends.
At all.
"Anyway, you're fine now. No more monster. I'm getting the hell out of here."
Unlike his father, Camelot, Chaonis was not much interested in the whole customer service side of saving lives. he did not stick around to see if they needed medical help, and he did not care if they got attacked again after he left. He had stopped the youma he was there for: he wasn't psychic, and he wasn't a baby sitter.
He moved to climb up to a roof, though his body was protesting. That damn youma had left him feeling messed up, and his shoulder wasn't cooperating with him. Still, he had to make a good show of it, so he continued to climb anyway.
