User ImageStaring up into the billowy clouds painted against the sky, Sumai was convinced that he was at death’s edge. His abdomen had been making all manner of horrific sounds at him all day, but he still had been unable to find something to fill his stomach with.

He hadn’t had anything to eat since the previous day. Having woken up this morning with vigor, Sumai had covered a lot of distance up until now and had lost himself in his thoughts while he was moving. Unfortunately, all of his great progress today had come at the cost of much of his body’s energy and he was being made known of it at that moment.

Still staring upwards into the sky, Sumai considered the things that he could try to eat. At the moment, he though that he might be too tired and drained to chase something down, which left him with very few options. Sighing, Sumai hauled himself from the ground and began to search the surrounding area for food.

The cheetahess was taking a nap. She had hobbled her way quiet far and her leg was voicing its complaints. Slausale huffed as she tried to find a comfortable position for it. Why did this always happen to her? The unlucky cheetah gave her leg a slow stretch. Perhaps tomorrow she'd go slower and take it easy on the limb.

Slausale immedianatly began to think of all the reasons she might have to try to make a run for it. As it was, running was hard if not neigh impossible for her. With her leg sore and stiff from walking she'd be the easiest thing around to catch. She was just about to lay back down when an unfamiliar scent got her attention. Cheetah. Hopefully whoever it was wouldn't notice her and just go right on past.

Stomach growling ferociously, Sumai marched forward on his mission for food in determination. Sumai really didn’t know where he would go about finding any. He reached all of his senses out around him, trying to pick up on anything. Stopping suddenly, he flicked his ear to the side and listened closely standing completely still.

Was that water?

The sound that he was hearing, though distant, was definitely moving water, and wherever there was water, there was typically something tasty around. With the possibility of the end of his hunger so imminent, Sumai immediately began to move toward the sound.

He had gotten about halfway to the sound when he stopped again. Peering a little ways down the slope of the hill he was at the top of, he saw a cheetah laying on the ground. Curious, he slowly began to creep down the hillside. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that she seemed to have an injured leg by the way she treated and held it. He wondered if she needed help. Walking toward her, he put his most friendly smile and stopped a short distance from her.

“Hey there!”

The sound of footsteps then a voice, startled Slausale so much she just froze where she lay. From the direction she was laying, she was unable to see who or what had spoken to her. Who would be out here? Oh why does this always have to happen to me?! Her mind ran in circles of why this one had come over to her.

Relucantly she rolled up from her side to belly. She blinked in surprise at the cheetah standing there. "Um...... hello." Don't ask what he wants. Maybe he'll go away. Unfortunately, she knew her luck, or un-luck, would hold. He'd be looking for something or someone, and ask her to help. "Um...." She looked all around for ideas. "Nice day isn't it?" That was safe enough, wasn't it? Slausale hoped so.

Sumai gazed at the cheetah before him curiously. It had been a while since he had run into another cheetah, and he always enjoyed seeing them. Most of his time traveling was spent dodging lions. He watched as she reacted to his arrival, turning toward him and revealing bright green eyes.

She seemed to be a bit anxious at his presence, and he hoped he hadn’t frightened her. Mildly surprised at the abrupt question that she asked him, he quickly answered her. “Ah, yes it is a nice day today,” he laughed nervously.

Glancing at her injured leg, he asked tentatively, “Are you okay? Do you need help? You look hurt.” He didn’t think that he was doing very well in approaching this female, so he tried introducing himself instead.

“Um, my name is Sumai. I was on my way to the, uh, well I heard water running over there and I was headed that way until I saw you.”

Slausale twitched her tail nervously. What did this cheetah want? She bet it wouldn't be anything good. Unfortunately, being another cheetah it was impossible for her to run away from him even if her leg wasn't bummed.

She looked around at the sky as if seeing it for the first time that day. It was nice? Well maybe. "Ummmm." Slausale coughed delicately in nervousness. "It's an old wound. Doesn't do anything anymore than slow me down." Her ears twitched as the male cheetah introduced himself.

"Oh yes. Er, nice to meet you? Mine's Slausale." She cringed as she said her name. "Ah. The water is very good, yes. You should go get a drink." She nodded encouragingly. Maybe if he got distracted by the water, he'd forget about her long enough that she could slip away.

“Oh, well nice to meet you Slausale!” Sumai thought that there was something off about the female, but not being very intuitive, he didn’t really take much notice and continued to try to speak to her. His parents had always taught him to be friendly and sociable to others, so he never knew when to back off, which has gotten him into trouble in the past.

“I was ah, actually I was going to catch some fish,” he said slowly, her nervousness starting to get to him, but he pressed on, “Are you hungry too? You should come with me. It looks like it would be hard to catch anything with that leg.”

Sumai wondered how she managed to keep herself safe and get around. It must have been difficult. “I’m pretty good at fishing,” he said trying to lighten her mood, “Come on! I’m sure I can’t eat all the fish I’m gonna catch anyway!”

Sumai went in the direction that he had heard the water and stopped and waited to see if the other would follow him.

Slausale thought he sounded friendly enough, but realized it could be a trick. She was really confused about what to do now that introductions where over. Did she sit and make chit-chat? Her eyes blinked. "Fish?" What the heck was fish? Slausale looked away to hide her ignorance.

"Well I can't catch anything running if that's what you mean." It really pinged on her soul. She was a cheetah, one of the fastest cats on the savannah, and she couldn't run. It wasn't Sumai's fault. "How do you catch fish?"

Slowly she got up and followed. Worried about an ambush, Slausale kept her head on a constant swivel. What was that noise? A paw stepping on a branch? No that was her own footstep.

Sumai cocked his head to the side in curiosity as he walked forward. Did she not know what fish where? He loved fish, they were always a great back up food when he couldn’t catch anything, and he had gotten pretty good at fishing if he said so himself. Sumai sighed as long past memories came to him.

No matter how many things he forgot throughout his life, he wouldn’t forget how his parents had taught his sister and himself to fish. “Well, yeah! They’re pretty good, and they’re easy to catch...... even if you can’t move very fast.”

Thinking about how he could better describe fish to Slausale, he heard the sound of water coming closer and closer until he came to the peak of the hill that they had been walking up and saw a thin river cutting through the forest. “Oh look! There it is!” he exclaimed and rushed toward the water. Hoping onto a rock that jutted out from the water, he stared down into the river and watched the fish as they scurried by.

“Look,” he beckoned to Slausale, “These are fish.” Watching them closely with a sharp eye, Sumai searched for a good one to catch. Slowly dipping his claw into the water, he swiftly hooked it under a passing fish’s gill and swept out of the river and onto land. Staying on the rock, he repeated the action several times until he had caught enough fish for himself and Slausale.

“See? It’s not hard, you could do this.”

It seemed to take forever for the cheetahess to hobble after Sumai. Her leg had picked now as a great time to act up. Great, just great. He offers to show me something that I might be able to do, and I can't keep up. Some luck. She heaved a sigh and forced herself on. It was gonna be miserable today. More so than usual.

She slowly closed the distance, to talk without yelling. Yelling would only bring down trouble on them. While he could get away easily, she'd be stuck with whatever or whoever it was. "Easy?" Slausale sounded uneasy. Nothing was easy. She gingerly eased her way onto the rock, her green eyes peered into the water. "I don't see anything Sumai...." There was the water, and her reflection back at her.

A surprised gasp popped out as his paw reached into the water and pulled something shiny and wriggling out. "I don't understand how you're doing it." Her tone was slightly sullen. To show her something she couldn't do was just mean. Apparently he thought she could. She peered at the water then back at the fish. Those were fish? They didn't look like anything she knew.

“Yeah! It is,” he said as he went to stand close to her to that she could see what he was doing. Slowly dipping his paw into the water, Sumai spoke quietly, “Just put your paw down in the water like this and stay still so that you don’t scare them, and they’ll come to you.”

Letting his arm dangle in the water for a bit, he watching the fish slowly start to investigate it in passing. “You just have to be quick in the second that you’re going to get one”, he said as he slowly unsheathed a claw into the water, “don’t give them a chance to get away.”

He sunk the claw into a passing fish and threw it onto land in the same motion. Looking to her, he said, “On land, they’re defenseless and can’t really do anything, and they’re pretty tasty.” Walking over to one that he had caught at first, he sat down and bit into the fish.

Slausale watched wide eyed as he stuck his paw back into the water. Water! Hiding her reluctance she leaned closer. How was he getting them to come close. She was sure he was hiding some trick or something. Still she watched as he tossed the fish onto land. Was he trying to poison her?! That didn't resemble anything she knew was edible. Though he was eating it...

Not too encouraged, the cheetahess limped over to the flopping fish. Leaning down gingerly she opened her mouth slowly, and got smacked in the nose by the fin. She jerked back with a snort. These things were dangerous! Her eyes darted toward Sumai then back down to her fish. Slowly she reached a paw to put on it. As she expected it was slimy. The fish twitched and slipped away from her.

Following reluctantly after her 'prey', if it could be called that; several more times it skittered away from her. By now the fish was covered in dirt and looked even less appetizing than before. Slausale stood a couple feet from it and just stared at it.

Sumai bit back a smile at the trouble she was having. He had never meet anyone that hadn't eaten fish before. Maybe they could try something else? As a shadow descended over them, he looked up to see that the sun was moving further and further away from the center of the sky.

It was going to be dark soon, and he hadn’t even found a good tree to hide in for the night. Looking back to his new acquaintance, he said, “Maybe fish aren’t really your thing, I’m sure we could find something else.” Considering it, he stood and looked for a direction head it.

“How about a hare? I’m sure we could find one around here.” With that, he headed off into the distance, wondering what the evening with Slausale would bring him.

Feeling a chill in the air, she gave a shiver. It was going to be another long night. Slausale gave Sumai a surprised look. "No I guess it isn't. I'm sorry for being such a trouble." She started to hang her head in shame, but had to look at him gratefully. "Really? Yes a hare would be lovely. Thank you Sumai. I'm not too good at catching them unless they run right by me."

She followed the cheetah as quickly as she could. Slausale had learned the trick of watching for rabbit runs and laying in wait beside one. It worked in a pinch, if she had enough time.
