Bakery and cafe was a bit of a misnomer, if Evie had anything to say about it. Between the sit down restaurant and the counter where they sold their pies and pastries and the constant running around she had to do for both, she was quite certain these sorts of places a la Marie Callender's or coco's needed another name. Like torture chamber. Yeah, Evie hated this place.
The lingering smell of sugar and fat was always firmly embedded in her uniform, and her disgust at wearing it was evident as she was instructed to sit behind the pastry counter and box up orders. Easy enough. Open box, put pie in, give pie to customer.
She still wasn't happy, as evidenced by her chronic bitchface. But Evie was never happy at work unless her shift was almost over. Long hours and constant embitterment could do that after a while, but she had to pay her tuition somehow.
She was starting to relax, just leaning on the counter and leafing through a magazine. Until the bell on the door rang announcing a new customer. A kid. Ugh... kids were the worst.

Kids were pretty bad normally but Lissy was worse. You see she had decided she was hungry and had been preying on all the bakery's around town - her bag she had slung round her shoulder would have shown you just how many bakery's she had been to with all the cakes and stuff she had managed to neatly arrange in her bag for later. This place though she knew she liked and wanted to eat as much as she could.
She walked straight up to the counter and smiled as sweetly as she could, like one would imagine that cute little girl smile.
"Can I please have some of the free tasters?" She asked as innocently as she could muster - she even fluttered the eyelashes for extra effect. After all Lissy was hungry and she wanted some of those yummy cakes that Evie was so going to give her!

Cute as Lissy was, it only made Evie suspicious. Oh, she was definitely up to something, as all kids were, she assumed. If her little sister was any gauge to measure by, she was certain she wouldn't be Lissy's biggest fan by the time they both left here.
But she also thought, hey, maybe that was unfair. All little kids weren't as annoying as Dana, right? So she put on her best, fake 'welcome' smile and pulled the cover off the display dish on the counter, plucking a small cut of brownie off the top.
"We offer sample bites of all our bakery goods, but the marshmallow topped brownies are today's special," She informed, handing the bite sized morsel over the counter to the little girl.

Lissy for now continued with her ever so sweet and innocent facade, of course it wouldn't last too long but it seemed to be getting her what she wanted at the moment and that of course was very important!
"Thank you!" Again said in that stupidly annoying cute voice. She did however take the marshmallow topped brownie bite size piece and popped it into her mouth.
"Mmmmmm thats yummy!" She smiled and licked her lips after finishing it.
"Can I try another bit?" Time to start pushing it... Of course she wanted to try a bit of everything and of course she did have some money in case the manager came out and said she was wasting time. She could potentially be a paying customer! Lissy knew how to play this game well.

Evie kept up her 'customer smile' while the kid munched away, but when she asked for another piece it deflated just a bit. Yeah, no.
"Uh, yeah, one of each per customer," She said, the snotty attitude undisguised. then she realized her mistake in her wording and grimaced, hoping it was glossed over.
The kid wasn't really going to stand here and ask for a sample size of everything, right? Actually, she thought back to her ten year old sister, who definitely would, if she thought she could get away with it.
Now she found herself just wishing the kid would leave, but she didn't have the guts to kick her out herself. Would her manager be on her side? Evie didn't know her well enough to guess, but since she was always on her case to lighten up, probably not.

"Okay I will try a different one then! Erm.... that one!" She pointed to a danish with a cherry on top. Yep she was going to try all of them now. Unlucky Evie had a Lissy who actually paid attention to when people spoke. She was also looking forward to lots of free bits because she could try one of everything! Oh yes this was going to be a yummy time!
"Then I want a bit of that one, and that one and I want to try that one as well." Yep she just went along the row picking all of them. "In fact as it's one of each per customer I think I will just try a bit of all of them, just to make sure I buy the one I like!" She smiled in a nice innocent way deciding there and then that she wouldn't buy a thing, not that she really intended to anyway but she occasionally thought about it.
She did show her money though, to prove she had some and that Evie wasn't wasting her time, though she actually was but that wasn't really the point.

Evie glared a glare a thousand times worse than she remembered glaring in her entire life, but she knew it would do no good. It didn't work on her sister, who fully knew how far she could take a streak of petty revenge, why would it work on this stranger's kid who would be out of her sight before the night was over, never to cross her path again?
She wished she was at a computer keyboard so she could pound out FML over and over again.
But really, if she liked her job-- and she did-- all she could do was dish up sample sizes of the requested danish and begrudgingly hand it to the teal haired brat.
She silently wished she'd choke on it as she got to cutting up the next one in line.

Lissy on the other hand rather enjoyed eating all the cake, in fact she enjoyed it so much she would have happily continued all day.
However once she had tried all the cakes in the shop she looked at her money and then at Evie and smiled.
"Well they are all rather nice. But not nice enough I don't think. You should take some baking lessons!" She stuck her tongue out, did a really random curtsy and left, most then happily skipping down the road. After all she had so much sugary energy now, she could go on for hours.

Evie was just about to explain that she wasn't the baker when the brat left. Left! She was thinking she'd at least buy some cookies or something. With a frustrated half yell, half squeal of anger, she went to the back room to restock the display counter... and cool off while she was at it.
Why did people have children, again?
