This is a spell I wrote myself, in hopes that it would either stop people from telling rumors about you, or even if they do, to cause the people listening to recognize the lies so that they will not be believed.
So, here are the steps:
1) Draw a protective circle in your usual manner, what ever works best for you.
2) Stand inside the circle, picture the person/people who are causing you grief, and chant:
"Shut their mouths and push them away, no one will care what they have to say, bind their lips and keep them at bay, no one believes what they have to say."
3) Make a pushing motion with your hands as you chant, as if to push their words away, rejecting them and rendering them ineffective. You can also imagine their mouths being tied up as you chant, making it so that they are unable to effectively tell the lies they want to.
4) You can chant as many times as you like, for as long as you like, until you feel that enough energy has been raised to make the spell take effect.
5) When you are ready, you can end the spell saying "May it be so", or what ever phrase you like to end a spell on, to signify that you are done. Close the protective circle.
Notes: * If you cast your spells depending on moon phases, I recommend casting this spell during the Waning Moon. * During the chant, you can substitute "they" for he or she, what ever applies to your situation. * Do not cast this with the intention of harming anyone- as I said, this is only intended to stop gossip, not to punish the gossiper. * This spell won't work on someone who is innocent, only on someone who is trying to use their words to do harm.
So there's the spell. Since this is one I made up for my situation, I can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, but it did seem to work for me so far, when I needed it. I hope that it will work for you as well. Good luck!

Isn't messing with someone's free will to that degree a form of punishment or harm?

Sanguina Cruenta Isn't messing with someone's free will to that degree a form of punishment or harm? I understand your concern, but I don't consider it any worse than a binding spell that keeps people from causing others harm. As far as the people being gossiped to, it wouldn't hurt them, it's just that they will be better able to tell that the person spreading false rumors is doing just that. However, if you think this is treading too far into the free will territory and shouldn't be posted, I will take this down.

I don't think it's taking away free will at all. Seems like the spell is suppsoed to stop others from taking stock in the rumors, rather than force the gossiper to stop telling them.
I don't see anything wrong with this spell at all.

Precisely! I suppose I should elaborate, just to set the record straight, while the title says "to stop rumors or render them ineffective", the former doesn't mean making them unable to tell rumors, or forcing them not to want to. It's more like slightly altering circumstances to make it less convenient for them to talk about it, so they are less likely to get a chance to. And if/when that fails, it's meant to make the people listening see through the lies so that it won't make much difference even if the lie is told. My intent while performing the spell was primarily aimed at the latter.
