At the time of its deployment, the Redler was a very fast and agile Zoid, far more so than other aerial Zoids of the time (such as the Pteras). The Redler is unusual for an airborne Zoid in that it is capable of operating both in the air and on land, as well as engaging in combat in both environments. The Zoid also has full VTOL capabilities, and is able to hover in place.
The Redler is armed with a quartet of razor sharp claws, and a blade concealed within its tail; all are capable of cutting through most types of Zoid armour. Unfortunately, the Zoid completely lacks ranged weaponry, putting it at a disadvantage against Zoids like the Zabat. As a result, many Redlers sport improvised ranged weapons. Redlers could be equiped with the Booster Cannons to remove this weakness. Due to their versatility in weapons, Redlers act as both Air-to-Air and Air-to-Ground combat, though their A2A abilities fall short of Zabat, Storm Sworder and Raynos abilties. As such, the Redler is normally flown by brand new Air Pilots. The Redler's main purpose now is for Close Air Support, attacking ground Zoids from the safety of the skies.
The Redler was originally the most common dedicated aerial Zoid there was, serving as a dogfighter, bomber, attack platform, scout... the list goes on and on. And why not? They had a good thing going. The Redler uses Magnesser technology, which gives it full VTOL capabilities.
Originally known as the “Reddra”, the Russians later decided to change the Zoid’s name to “Redler”, as they believe that was a fiercier-sounding title, and more fitting for the Dragon. Not too many people complained, and the name stuck. However, the Redler often would prove to be out of its league when trying to fight the great aerial champions, like the Raynos and Zabat, and later, the Storm Sworder. Still, for its size and class, a Redler with a skilled pilot can give almost any Zoid a run for its money. Also, thanks to the Magnesser technology, the Redler has full VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) capabilities, as well as the ability to fly and even hover at very low altitudes.
With the introduction of the Zabat, the Redler has been relegated to a task it serves best at: Precision Close Air Support for ground Zoids
Newer models of the Redler, called Isenbeck Redlers after the pilot that made the model famous, now mount basic weaponry, though at the cost of speed and maneuverability. The Isenbeck Redler was designed by Edwin "Black Angel" Isenbeck of the European Union and sold to the Pan-American Coalition in exchange for their HM-02 Chase Cannons. The Oriental Alliance, upon seeing the newer Isenbeck Redler, shot one down and stole the modifications.
