so i guess we can make more specific threads later, depending on interest, but we could at least start with one general thread.
what were some recent movies you watched?
i finally just got around to watching cloverfield, being unable to stay very long in the theatre when it came out. i actually really enjoyed it. i'm a fan of monster films, body horror, and survival horror genres. i thought it was pretty brilliant.

I saw cloverfield a while back. I did like it but it wasn't one that really stuck with me much afterward. What do you consider body horror? Is that like the torture porn stuff? I do like monster movies and survival horror like the zombie films. Especially, ones that have a little humor in them too like Sean of the Dead and Zombieland.

I would say that the two could overlap some, but are not mutually exclusive. Wikipedia says it best: Quote: Body Horror, Biological Horror, Organic Horror or Venereal Horror is horror fiction in which the horror is principally derived from the graphic destruction or degeneration of the body.[1] Such works may deal with disease, decay, parasitism, mutilation, or mutation. Other types of body horror include unnatural movements, anatomically incorrect placement of limbs to create 'monsters' out of human body parts, etc. David Cronenberg is one of the notable directors who made horror films of this kind. So think, The Fly, Alien, Jacob's Ladder. In Cloverfield I'm thinking in particular about Marlena's demise. Yikes. If you like monster flicks, have you seen The Host? It's Korean, and brilliant.

I figure the first one is worth a view, but honestly I'm worried about being too freaked out by them.

They are kinda gruesome.. but as they go on you understand more and more.. that is what got me hooked on them.

I like things like the fly but there's no way you could get me to watch things like Saw. Nope *shakes head* I recently watched Let the Right One In and really enjoyed it. I noticed the English remake is also on Netflix streaming so I'll probably get around to watching that one too. I don't only like horror though. I like just about any genre if it's done well. The most recent movie I saw in the theater was the final Harry Potter. Loved it! Edit: added The Host to my Netflix list wink

I'm a big animation nerd. whee I like The Host because while it does have horror and thriller elements, it's very much a drama, as well as social critique. Well, social critique of South Korea, anyway. razz

Sammirah .........I like The Host because while it does have horror and thriller elements, it's very much a drama, as well as social critique........ This is the same reason I find apocalypse type movies/stories so interesting. Whether it's zombies, or a comet, or disease... I enjoy seeing how they show society deal with the crisis and the survivors try to... well, survive.

That's why I like Science Fiction; it doesn't need to have a message --I like laser guns and explosions as much as the next girl-- but SciFi has so much potential to explore philosophical issues. Sure, you've got the basic social critique zombies in the shopping mall kind of thing, but you've also got things like Blade Runner and Total Recall (or the books Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and We'll Remember it for You Wholesale, respectively) who make you questions things like what it takes to be human, and how do we know what's real and what's not (respectively). Also, yes I realise both of those films were adapted from works by Philip K. d**k, I couldn't think of anything else with this poor fried brain of mine.

I think you just described why a lot of us love SciFi (and Fantasy as well). They give a an alien setting that is so different from our every day reality it strips away the the usual baggage/bias that comes with it. The other parts of the story - whether it's social, psychological, or philosophical aspects of why people are the way they are, or why society is a certain way (and often what's wrong with it) stand out. It allows us to look at things like discrimination, war, morality, gender roles, etc... in interesting ways. Plus with cool explosions and stuff! xd

Camwen Soooo.... anyone seen the Captain America movie? No, and I haven't heard anything about it yet, either, so I'm curious. Was it silly, or actually pretty good? I heard Green Lantern was kind of a flop.
