"I don't think this is such a good idea," Zia said for the bazillion and second time as she leaned on the dinner table. Noah was running around, dealing with making sure everything looked nice.
the family get together they were both mentally preparing themselves for had been Noah's idea when their two older brothers serendipitously decided to be in town at coinciding times. Considering the prevalence of cousins in the vicinity and the fact that the entire point of Matthew's trip was to show off his new daughter who hadn't met any extended family, Noah thought a big shindig was appropriate.
Zia less so, but then, she had never been close with any of these people. Her father refused to come, but that wasn't much of a surprise since he hadn't spoken to Noah or one of their other brothers in at least ten years each. Her mom wasn't really considered part of the family so she was out too, leaving Zia feeling utterly alone and disconnected from all the 'family'.
The fact that the first guests had arrived and Noah greeted them with friend "Heeeeey!"s and hugs and she didn't recognize them, well, that just made the feeling worse.
Did they count as family if you didn't have a goddamn clue who they were?

Lorenzo didn't know ALL of the family. He knew his mother's side, which was probably pretty much the biggest thing and Noah and Zia, but Zia probably didn't remember him... He walked in with Chi attached to his arm and Istas following a little behind dressed in a purple and pink dress. The child looked around she was holding a sheep, with pink bows and a purple bonnet to match her dress. The child seemed to stare at the amount of people there as her father and mother greeted everyone else. She tugged on her mother's sun dress. "Who are all these people?" She hadn't seen Noah or Zia yet, so the whole thing was a bit confusing, to the child.

"Lorenzo!" Noah called out, lifting a hand in greeting when he saw his cousin. One of his brothers gave him a light knock on the shoulder in greeting before being pulled back into his previous conversation.
Suddenly, Zia found herself being pulled up with a yelp and dragged over. "Hey, this is Zia," Noah introduced, figuring it was required since they hadn't seen each other since Zia was four.
"Hi," She said awkwardly, bringing up one hand to make a stiff wave. Nudged sharply in the shoulder by Noah, she cleared her throat and pulled out her business cared and tried to muster up her usual greeting but ended up interrupting herself. "Hi, I'm Zi-- Istas?"

Lorenzo paused when Noah called out, he wasn't expecting that sort of a hello when he walked in the door. Giving a wave back he seemed to wait for his cousin to show up. "Hi Noah, Zia it's been a while." He said with a chuckle.
Chi was standing there quietly giggling at Noah's enthusiasm. While trying to convince Istas to stand still and not go wondering off into the crowd. After all, while everyone was family they didn't need her going and getting lost. "Oh Nice to meet you Zia." There was a pause when Lorenzo's younger cousin seemed to know Istas.
Istas waved at Zia, "Hi, and you're not Istas. I am." She beamed slightly, "Hi Uncle Noah!" She chirruped with a smile.
She looked back at Zia's business card taking it and reading it since obviously Zia had forgotten about it, "OH Daddy she does the same thing you do!" She knew the "big" word because she'd seen it on her dad's card. Holding it up and showing it to her father.
Lorenzo actually had one of this own cards out about to offer it to Zia. "Huh?" His hand was extended and then he glanced down at Istas as she held up the card for him to see. He paused and blinked looking at the card.

"Heh," Zia had to forced up that half a laugh at Istas' response. Little kids were apparently immune to awkwardness.
Well, little kids and Noah. "Hi, Istas!" Her loving 'uncle' responded to the chirrup, extending his hand to her to shake in line with all the other adults he'd been greeting in a similar fashion, just as a way of putting her on the same level as everyone else.
Zia quirked up one eyebrow, watching her brother and her cousin's daughter act like old friends and vaguely wonder if she'd been set up. She cleared her throat and turned her attention to Lorenzo who was looking at her business card with some expression of... was that confusion? Surprise? She didn't remember him, really, but for some reason, having to stand here as if under his scrutiny made her feel four years old again.
She had to remind herself she wasn't, and she stood there with her shoulders squared under her ostensibly expensive business chic outfit for the day. "Is something wrong?"

Istas grinned, she was completely immune to awkwardness apparently. She took Noah's hand in a shake giggling, "Are there chicken fingers?" She asked curiously looking at Noah, "Are they as good as the ones you make?" Obviously this was an important thing to note.
She looked at Zia after her father had taken the card for a moment, before wrapping the other into a hug at her waist and leaning on her.
"Oh, Haha, not really. We just work for competing firms is all." He scratched the back of his neck after having taken the card from his daughter. Pocketing it after Chi had nudged him and stared for a second as if to say don't be rude. Lorenzo offered her one in return. "Uh, since we're family?"
Chi rolled her eyes, "Sorry dear, he's a bit odd around competition, I'll keep him in line though." She gave air quotes when she said competition. "Anyways, it's lovely to finally meet Lorezno's family, and since you seem to already know Istas you'll have to come over and have lunch with us one day." She smiled, "I make a great apple pie for dessert." She paused, "If you like apple pie that is."
