How many people actually do it? How much do you tip? Do you have a set calculation or do you just tip depending on what you got? A friend and I developed a little tendency to tip with whatever change we have in our pockets. If I do the math, we're actually overtipping using 15% as an average tip size so I don't feel bad about leaving a stack of coins on the table.

Normally depends on how good they are. I still tip them regardless because they handle my food. I usually do a dollar or two even if it isn't within percent range because I don't have a job and I can't afford to give 15% a lot of the time. My phone does the calculations though and when I start working again I'd tip them that and if the service was fantastic I'd go to 18% I suppose.

Oddly enough, the only time I seem to go out to eat lately is Denny's at 2-4 in the morning. Since they usually seem to have the same small group working at that hour, I tip so that I'm not remembered as being an a**. Apart from that it just depends on the service.

Well lemme paint some pictures for those who are a bit on the fence.

Situation 1: Empty restaurant, good and fast service, food is decent, your water is never empty (as in waiter comes around often to refill it).

Situation 2: Full house, slow service, food is decent, your water is empty for 80% of your stay and only refilled once.

@Trev: Would you believe that my mom and I did the same thing? Almost no other customers so we always have fast service, the food is fresh because they cook it on the spot and not in advance.

well it depends where we are. if the waitress/waiter serves our meal and we don't have to leave our seats then its usually like 4 or 5 dollars but if its like a buffet its only like 2 or 3 dollars. also it depends on the service. if they suck majorly then it would be like $1 or nothing at all. if they were nice and did they're job then they might get a little more.

You have to mess up pretty badly for me not to tip you... I usually go with a 20 percent cause its easy for me to calculate.

I usually reach into my change pocket, grab a bunch of coins, stack them up all neat and orderly, and that's my tip. As I said though, we usually over-tip using that method.

I usually give $5, but my bill rarely ever goes over 25....but if the service was crap, I will leave 3 pennies in the bottom of the water glass, or like a dime or whatever I may have in my pocket.

No use hoping for a miracle.

I was a waitress like 3 years back & some people can be real assholes. I'm fine with a smaller than normal tip. ******** my biggest tip was 15 dollars. but I really didn't appreciate teenagers throwing change at me & laughing.

My income depended on my tips. I got 2.50 an hour + tips. I believe I only earned 500 in four months. It's not easy.. so unless your waiter/ress is a complete idiot/a*****e.. tip decently.

I've worked for a waiter for all of three days.
[I normally work the window up at work.]

So I know what it's like to be too. I also know that most of the waiters/waitresses are trying to support a family. So even if I don't order a whole lot, I always try to tip a lot more than I normally would. I tip at least 50% if I have the money on me. Which I normally do.

Waiters/Waitresses LIVE off of the tips. Even though that they might be bad, maybe they had a bad day? Maybe something horrible had went wrong? A friend had been my waiter once and he was being a real a**, and normally he was very kind and sweet. So I knew something had been wrong, so I know there is more than just the 'upfront' of it all.

So I always make sure that I tip extra generously. Even if they don't deserve it.

I tip at any sit-down restaurant and 15% or just over that.

I'm a horrible tipper. I can't keep numbers straight.

If the meal is under $10 and I don't want to wait around for change I usually just leave a $20 and run. Anything over $14 gets a 20-25% tip. If the service sucks, but I can tell the server is making an effort, it's a 15%. If the server's a jackass, I'll whip out the change and pay exact or just leave a buck and the coin change. Maybe a note if I have paper.

Depends on the total cost of what I've ordered, I always, and usually tip 10-30%.
