If they felt that the spells were justified and they had properly considered the consequences of their actions, then they really have nothing to "cleanse". Even if they now regret doing so, as has been mentioned the best thing to do, would be simply cast a counter spell. If as you said, they didn't even complete the original spell work, then again there isn't anything they need to "cleanse", but in the future they should be more careful in their choices.
Might be a good idea for them to also stop looking towards magic to solve all of their problems, since it's more of something that should be used when all mundane methods have failed. In short, while they can do good deeds to help boost their positive "karma" (the western view of it anyways), there isn't anything they can do to "cleanse" away improper actions. This is why one should always carefully consider what they are doing before taking action - so that you are sure that you are prepared to accept whatever consequences come your way.
