Once upon a time there were two Princesses. Each had a special job in the land of Equestria. The elder, who raised the sun each morning and the younger, who raised the moon each night. They worked in harmony, making sure the sun and moon were always raised.
Until the younger sister realized that whenever she raised the moon, everyone was asleep and never awake to enjoy it. She became incredibly jealous, seeing as how the ponies were always awake and playful when the sun was out. In her spite, she refused to lower the moon and let her sister raise the sun. She permanently intended to plunge Equestria into darkness forever.
She herself, was banished to the moon by her older sister. Upon banishment, the elder took up both jobs of raising the sun and the moon by herself.

Before Princess Luna returned as Nightmare Moon and was then made normal again, she spent a lot of time alone on the moon. What thoughts ran through her mind while she was there? Did she do anything of significance? Did her thoughts change at all about what she had done wrong before her return to Equestria to once more plunge it into eternal darkness?

For as long as she could remember, Luna had raised the moon and brought the night. The moon, shining white; the countless stars, like spilled diamonds in the sky; and the cool darkness that caressed all living things... She had been so proud of her job, that she was the one to bring the night for all to enjoy and love as much as she did!
… Except they didn't. Big sister's realm, the day, was loved by all; but the beautiful night was forgotten... Luna had tried so hard to tell herself that the ponies needed rest. She had tried so hard to be proud that they felt safe to sleep under her precious night sky!
And yet she found herself trapped in her own moon, forever forced to look at how the world below shunned the night. It wasn't fair... It wasn't fair!
All because she wanted a the night to reign a little longer. Luna had thought that maybe if her subjects had time to rest and still have time to see the night, then surely they'd be as happy as they were when it was day!
But they weren't happy, they weren't happy at all. They were scared. Why... WHY?! Luna finally broke. She wouldn't lower the moon, not even for Celestia! And Celestia wasn't her sister anymore, either!
And then, suddenly, Celestia herself had banished her to the moon. As days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, months turned to years, and finally years turned to centuries; Luna replayed the events leading up to her banishment in her head over and over; and every time she grew more and more confused.
It was all their fault, she knew that! So why... Why did she feel so much like their was a void inside her? She wanted to see her sister- no, Celestia- again so badly, but why? She hated her! She hated her so much!
Why did she find herself crying every time she remembered her sister's voice?
But one day, she'd have the answers... One day, she'd be free... And one day, she'd show them all!

How dare they, those ungrateful fools! She wanted to show them the beauty of the night, and this was how they repay her?!
The hatred in her heart burned at the thoughts.
And her sister, of all ponies, would cast her into the moon like she was a nothing, like SHE was in the wrong?!
How DARE she!
Hadn't she loved her?! Hadn't her sister had any ounce of understanding for her?!
No... no, it wasn't like that...
She turned her back to the night that Luna loved, turned her back on her sister and sought to have control all for herself!
And all Luna had wanted was appreciation for what she did, but did ANYPONY care?!
NO! They slept the night away, making a waste of Luna's beautiful night and wallowing in Celestia's sun.
But it wouldn't last, Luna wouldn't allow it!
She WOULD RETURN, and all those ponies would be engulfed by the night by force.
Then they would HAVE to see it her way, or deal with the terrible force that Nightmare Moon could be!

Once upon a dark time....the clouds in the sky never shown white again...instead darkness with shattered lights a sundered dotted the new world. There was a princess of the night...banished by her sister to the very world she had brought up..by herself...laying there in the clod dust of nothingness the Pony was very sad...and alone...she regretted keeping the moon as the better to the sun..but her heart burned with mad fury at her sister.. ..dare she banish me here...she knows not of the of darkness that I possess..
The pony laid there for days until a thought raised her mind..could I get off this pile of nothing? Could I make something of nothing? Could I return from nothing into something? She had made up her mind...
Slowly over the years she toned her powers inward on herself...bringing the moon's cold darkness into her fibers of life.
Soon she mastered many magnificent techniques in her home of nothingness. Her sister will soon rue the day the sun dared eclipse the moon!
She did mature over the years and thought about taking over the life giving sun with the goddess of sleep..the moon...but her sister had to pay....and she will know the darkness Nightmare Moon has suffered...and become..

It seemed like an eternity had passed after she had been banished. Alone. Abandoned. She might as well have been left to die! All she had done was extend the life of the moon so that everyone could see its beauty! Yet her sister thought to steal that from her so that everyone could bask in the sun... Because all that mattered to her was the praise and fun they had in her domain...
It was unfair! How could they do this to her? Was she not as important as her sister?! No... of course not. All that mattered was their selfish wants. To them she was nothing. She'd show them... she swore.
Being here alone had given her time to think, time to plan. Her eyes softly shut as the thoughts swirled around her head. But what if they would not accept it again? What if they refused? Had she gone about all of this wrong?
As her eyes fluttered ajar she ran over all the events in her head. She couldn't shake the expressions of the faces. Especially her sister's. Did they truly think she was a monster? Would they not do the same thing themselves? Yes... they would! She knew they would had they been in her hooves. She did nothing wrong!
It was settled... She would bring glory to the darkness, to the moon... Even if she had to force it to show everyone just how beautiful it could be.

Response: Princess Luna, her thoughts were so right and the way she handled it was wrong. Just because the ponies slept during her night didnt mean they didnt care. I bet there was plenty of ponies that gazed at the stars at night. You can not see stars so bright and the moon shining during the day, can you? No you can't.
While Luna was on the moon, she plotted her revenge, how could her own sister trap her in that moon of hers. What type of sister was she!? Someone that really didn't care about her sister of course. She loved her sister, it just she felt used that she brought up a wonderful night and everypony slept-ed. She was hurt.
So her revenge would be eternal night to all of Equestria. So as the stars grew closer to the moon, thousands of generations later she showed up and glared at her subject. She was mad and really angry. She wanted to bring night that lasts forever.
In her heart, Princess Luna was truly sorry for during this stuff, but that wasn't really her is was Nightmare moon and her dark sadness that transformed her. She really needs to learn elements of harmony herself. She makes a wonderful Princess, to bring up the night that she and I love.
