He was assuming that she could be coming early.

The moments between Maritess signing up for exams and learning she was going to be taking one were nerve-wracked and set her on edge. Even finding out her first choice of the available faculty members didn't help her calm down in any way. Which was possibly why the winged ghoul had arrived at the designated classroom far earlier than the rest. Of course she wasn't skipping any other classes for her exam, that wouldn't do, but the moment she was available, she'd soared through the halls like a... well... like a bat shot straight out of hell.
She shouldn't have been surprised to find the minipet instructor was already there waiting for the exams to begin. If her undead heart was capable of beating, she would probably have her hand pressed over her chest in a vain attempt to steady the pace. But as it was, she fixed a smile on her face as she flew up to him.
"Good afternoon, Professor," she greeted.

"Afternoon," He returned the greeting with a smile; she was early, as expected. That was good... He walked to a nearby table, picking up a crate from under it before moving to the stretch of sandy path. Opening the crate, he tipped it gently before taking a step back, "It's alright..."
Soon, a minipet roughly the size of a chicken appeared from inside the crate, head turning to look around as it cautiously stepped out. After determining that it was safe, it started to peck at the ground, although its eyes were still focused on its surroundings.
Malcolm turned to look at Tess, pointing at the table, "Take a net from that table. Your exam is to catch this little fellow here - a Dustrunner." SImple enough? Maybe.

There was no soft cooing or going "awwww, how cuuuuute" from Tess when the minipet emerged. Partly because what she found adorable usually required tentacles being involved but mostly because she didn't doubt for one second the little creature would be giving her hell during her exam. She did, however look surprised that she was taking the exam alone when she'd heard they were done in groups. O-okay, if Professor Malcolm believed she would be able to do this on her own, then she would do this on her own! No time for whining or bargaining.
That never worked on her own minipets and she doubted it would work for this one. She cautiously approached the creature, hands on either side while she tried to look as harmless as possible. The last thing she wanted was to have the small creature run every-jacking-where.

Malcolm had exited the examination area, choosing to stand outside the path to watch; after all, this was an exam. There would be no interference from him.
The Dustrunner froze as Tess approached, its red eyes focused on the student. When she came too close for comfort. however? It flapped its wings, throwing dust everywhere, including at Tess' eyes, before darting away, chirping loudly.

The manananggal's hands instinctively rose to shield her face as the sand neared her eyes. She managed to avoid most of the bird's attack but still some got past her defenses and they stung! "Ack! Oh come on, I haven't even done anything to you!" Miraculously, she managed to keep herself from saying the yet she wanted to snarl as her wings beat back the rest of the sandy charge right back at the minipet.

'CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP-'
The Dustrunner got increasingly louder with each 'chirp', flapping its wings and generally causing sand to fly everywhere as it dashed down the path, away from the scary student.

The winged ghoul let out a startled eep as the bird zipped past her and she immediately regretted it as sand got into her mouth. Wiped at her lips, making a face at the gritty taste before trying to fly after the minipet. "Wait! Come back here! You don't want to go there!!"

The Dustrunner was just flailing its wings for the sake of flailing, and chirping for the sake of chirping, as it ran here and there. Sometimes, it would run within reach of the ghoul, only to dart out of reach again.
It seemed to be slowing down somewhat though...

It was frustrating more than tiring for Tess that the bird kept eluding capture. Unfortunately, when she tried to make a dive-bombing swoop, she failed to pull up in time and ended up crashing to the sandy ground. Needless to say, it hurt more than just her pride.

The Dustrunner stopped momentarily when Tess fell, turning to stare at the ghoul with widened eyes as it ruffled its feathers, trying to make itself look larger.
... It was also trying to catch its breath.
The lack of flailing meant that sand was not flying everywhere this round... However, the minipet is sure to dash again soon.

The winged ghoul pushed herself back up, coughing and spitting out mouthfuls of sand. She shook her hair, trying to clear as much dust and sand out from the motion. Blindly, she started to feel for her net that she'd let go of upon impact. She wasn't going to give up! No, she wasn't!
If she could just regain her vision.

When it saw that the ghoul was still not really moving, the Dustrunner flailed a little, causing sand to fly in Tess' direction.

There was just too much sand! Maybe if Tess hadn't crashed she would be able to try and beat back the sand with her own wings. But as it was, she was getting covered by it! She abandoned the search for her net and just focused on getting airborne.

There was the sound of whistling, followed by footsteps. The Dustrunner, now visibly a lot calmer than before, was picked up and returned to its crate by Malcolm, who then turned towards Tess, walking towards her.
A hour or so later, the ghoul would wake up in the Nurse's office with a crate beside her and a note on it.NOTE While you did not fulfill the requirements for me to grant you a passing grade, I believe that your determination to catch this Dustrunner had earned you a place in this school...
