At first, Roch swore that the room next to his was empty. It probably was, but it still sort of bothered him whenever he walked past that closed door, wondering who, or what, was in there. Which was ridiculous, right? Because if there was someone in there, it would have to be a reaper. These were the reaper dorms, and if Danny was right, that meant there weren't any ghosts (thank Jack for that, btw.)

But it still struck him as... kinda freaky. And he practically jumped out of his skin when he heard this eerie, creaky sounding music coming from the other side of the door because of that fact.

He thought about running. It passed through his mind for a full five seconds before he manned up and--

Very politely knocked on the door.

. . . like reflected pools of fading light in the corners of my mind . . .

Eben paused in his writing, taking a moment to really listen to the music playing on his gramophone. It was a particularly dreary masterpiece and the wailing of the violins was very soothing for his tortured soul.

A knock at the door interrupted Ebenezer's thoughts and he turned, staring at the door with a mixture of doom and resignation on his face. He'd managed to keep his solitude for almost a full eight hours and now, someone was at his door. It was probably another student come to welcome him. Eben sighed for the sixty-third time that day and wished for the eighty-fourth that he could have just stayed at home. However, his parents had insisted and so, he was here.

Maybe he could ignore the knocking and just pretend that he wasn't here. He considered that idea for a moment before the knocking sounded again. It was no use. It was probably the music that had given him away but it helped to sooth and to inspire.

Standing, Eben ran a hand through his tousled hair, probably leaving traces of ink on his face. He was used to it. He crossed to the door with some feelings of trepidation and slowly opened it just far enough that he could stare at the student on the other side of the door. He blinked a few times at the harshness of the light (though the hallway was only marginally brighter than his own cave-like room.

"Yes, may I help you?" he asked nervously and with some impatience.

Roch stared at him. Then he stared longer. Then, quite rudely, he reached forward and poked the other boil in the chest. "You're not a ghost," he decided. "I don't think. That's good to know," he finished. "But that music of yours... y'know, I ain't gonna get all waily over how loud it is, or anything, but... it ah..."

Really sucked? He thought about using that phrase or something like it for a second. But hell, it did suck! It was depressing, slightly off key (which was a sin in itself to the guitar obsessed boil) and it was loud.

"Do you really gotta play music that scares the living jack out of me this late at night?" he finally asked.

He hadn't even bothered to introduce himself before complaining about the music. Mrs. Wheedle would be shaking her head with shame if she heard.

Eben practically recoiled from the other boil and was sorely tempted to slam the door in his face. However, he'd been sent to the academy to try to make some friends. Or at least some acquaintances. Or even just to see other people. He did not like having his taste of music, which he considered to be impeccable, insulted though.

"That music of mine is classical and timeless. And I didn't think it was that loud, but I suppose I can turn it down. A little," he added grudgingly. He stalked back to the gramophone and adjusted the volume ever so slightly before walking back.

"I apologize for my music bothering you," he said, morosely. "I will say, however, that if this music scares you, I have to wonder if you are in the right place."

Eben didn't like bothering other people and he didn't like others bothering him. He was perfectly fine with being alone with his writing.

"It terrifies me that the tone deaf guys that played might be still alive," Roch said, shuddering a bit too fakely. "And how long have you been living in this room?" he asked, curiously. "I could have sworn it was empty."

He leaned in, peeking inside. "Man this place is dark," he said. "Hey, uh... I'm Roch, who are you?" he asked curiously. "I figure I should at least know my neighbor's name, right?"

He didn't want to admit his little problem with ghosts. It was even stupid to him, when there wasn't a ghost in the room, that was.

Tone deaf? Ebenezer shrank back in horror, completely speechless. These musicians were geniuses! Their music was extraordinary. Still, Eben disliked conflict and decided not to respond. He wished that the other boil would go away so that he could get back to his writing.

Dark? Of course it was dark! That was the way he liked it. The room was lit only by candlelight, with heavy drapes on the window to block out any light. The furniture was old and heavy, made of dark wood. There was little color in the room and what there was lacked any kind of bright hue. It wasn't like his tower at home, but it would have to do.

Eben turned back to the boil who was clearly trying to introduce himself. With another gut wrenching sigh, he turned his mind to his social duties.

"I am Ebenezer Larson Hollow. Most people call me Eben. I don't really see many people though," he added with a shrug. Eben preferred to be on his own. Left more time for writing.

"So you are my neighbor? Well, I'll probably have to keep my music down all the time so as not to bother you. I'm sorry you have to be stuck with a neighbor like me" said Eben with another sigh.

Whoah... Roch blinked, suddenly thinking he had taken the wrong approach. This guy was... dark. Not in a badass sort of way, or anything, but in a depressed, probably suicidal way. Roch figured it that way, at least. That wasn't good, right? This was a reaper! What did you do with a seriously depressed reaper when they were (he figured) a minority group in the school, and easily hurt if alone?

Even the best fighters in the reaper class were pretty useless without training--and as first years, that was exactly what they were. They needed to at least be friendly enough to help each other, right? Sure he had some monster pals, even a demon or two if he really got in trouble, but it was stupid to ignore the prospective help right next door!

"Hey," he said, his tone changing. "It's fine. I was just... bein' a jerk," he told Eben. "I figured this room was empty, then when some music started coming out of it, it kinda... caught me off guard. You can listen to whatever you like, alright?"
