Baharimtoto Pride

All had been so calm in the pride for so long, everyone was always happy though of course the odd argument would appear every now and then. Some things never seemed to happen as one would expect though and that night something changed dramatically.

The sea had been calm - dead calm. The youngsters had loved it being allowed to play in the shallow waters as it hardly moved and the fishing had been so much harder as the water moved so little and so any unusual movement sent the fish off in seconds.

As the pride slept the guards that were on duty felt a small tremor under their paws. Some may have gone to check it out and find out what it was. After all herds of elephants on the move made the ground tremble more often then not and the last thing they needed was an angry herd of elephants running through the pride.

One guard wandered down to the beach, it took him a while to notice the water seemed to be out further then normal. Confusion made him stay put for a while watching as the water seemed to move further away from the beach. It didn't make sense.

He tilted his head slightly and watched. A roar hit his ears and made him panic slightly, he looked around but couldn't see anything. Another guard had reached him after look for the elephants and reported nothing and thats when they saw it. Both looked out to the sea and stared at the largest wave they had ever seen. The noise it made was something they had never heard before and neither moved for what seemed like hours.

Suddenly they could feel their legs again and both rushed towards the dens letting out the alarm.

"RUN, RUN, RUN!" Though of course a quiet pride wasn't sure what to do when someone shouted to run, was it a game?

As the waters crashed down the pride soon realised why it was they had to run but not many did. The waters lifted the lions up with ease and took them away, some left the pride lands, some ended up in other prides and some ended up in trees. The pride had fallen apart - the waters had attacked them but no one knew why.

Kwaruza had been sleeping when she had heard the calls, they had woken her up but she hadn't seen the point in rushing to wake up - after all what could possibly be happening?

She left her den and saw the two guards running, their faces told her all she needed to know. Something was happening. She ran to Tamu's den but she never made it there. The water hitting the shore made such a noise that she stopped dead. The water picked her up and tossed her about. She was so certain she was going to die.

She found herself on the ground once the waters had subsided a little, she got up and coughed, finding her body felt incredibly weak and fragile.

She looked around and couldn't see anyone, the pride's lands were ruined.

"TAMU?" She shouted, finding her voice. Where was their queen? She dragged herself back into the prides heart to where the dens were and headed straight for the royal den. She went to go down into it and stopped. The royal den was completely flooded. Taking a deep breath she went down but there was nothing but darkness and water.

Climbing out of the royal den she headed back to the main meeting area and hoped that someone else would have survived. Her children... oh where were her children?

It was the gentle tremor that woke Dimbwi up. She'd always been a light sleeper, and stampeding elephants often caused her to stir into the waking world. But this wasn't a stampede... As she slowly rose to her paws, she felt one gently tug on the shell she wore. Dark violet eyes turned to look at sleepy blue eyes. "Somesing is happening..."

Mahatma yawned, before rising and stretching. "It's probably just elephants again... Ye should go back to sleep..." His sleep was chased far away, though, by the sound of the guards yelling. The storyteller blinked, turning his gaze to the shore... And felt his heart somehow both drop to the pit of his stomach and jump to his throat. That was one... Big... Wave...

Dimbwi's reaction was much different, as her eyes widened and jaw dropped. Memories flashed back in her mind, of fire and a burning angry god, and the welcome comfort of the sea... Except this time, the sea was the one that was angry. Before she realized what she was doing, her paws flew under her as she streaked for the cliffs and started to climb.

He first looked at the wave, then noticed Dimbwi running off. "Dimbwi, wait!" He jumped into action, running after her, and then climbing after her. But their efforts were of little help, as the wave hit and clawed them both off the cliff face. Mahatma reached a paw out, soon catching ahold of Dimbwi's and pulling her close, unwilling to go to the great sea beyond alone. He wanted a familiar face with him. And then, suddenly, branches enveloped them, and as the sea retreated, they both coughed up water, finding themselves in the welcome embrace of... A tree? Well, there were stranger plant-based saviors. Mahatma finally sighed, then hugged Dimbwi close. "It's okay. we're alright..." But what about everybody else?

It had hit her like a sudden storm - one moment she had been enjoying the warm sand that usually had been engulfed by the warm waters - but the tide had declined so much, and the youths around her had jumped the chance to play in the water while she enjoyed the damp sand between her claws. Even if that meant leaving the side of her beloved family for just a little bit. It couldn't have hurt, she had reached a right age, and had just been waiting for her own Ba'Ushufo . . . she could handle her own.

It hadn't been until the faithful guards had shouted the alarm that she suddenly found the ill luck of the warm sands, her eyes widening as she saw the large wave running its course directly to her. Such a shock ran through her system, almost lighting a fire under her paws, but stunned her mind for a split second, her body rocking and taking over as it forced her to turn tail and start running up the sands, her paws reaching as forward in a desperate attempt to gain ground, throwing the sands behind her. It felt like being split from one's own body, watching from somewhere seperated from her desperate body.

It only took a few minutes to lapse, but it felt forever, the running, and her desperate lunge up a bent tree, holding on for her life as her whines and screaming joined the angry roar of the waters. What had they done to anger the ocean so?

After a good bit after the water had subsided, pockering the beach with ominous puddles, darkened by the blue sky, as if tears of memories, she carefully climbed down her saviour, the claw marks she had made wiped clean from the bark from the lashing waves that had ran past her, the sound of it's loss of her soul still raging in her ears. Her throat was raw and her mind was still running, the sounds drowning out the silence around her.

Coughing lightly, her eyes widened in realization. Where was her family? Her siblings, her parents. . . where was the rest of her home? Taking off on tired paws, she called out to anyone in particular.

"Hello! Is there anyone left!?"

Neith had always been an ambitious young female and young she was. She had grown up listening to stories of this pride, where they worshiped the water gods. Apparently some of her family ruled it. Then again she had always got her habit of lying from her parents so whether that were true she wasn't so sure.

She had been searching for the lands for a while in search of something true but it seemed she was going to be unlucky. She arrived after the waters had returned to the sea, which was lucky for her. The pride's lands were in ruin, no matter where she looked she could see nothing but pain. Their were limp bodies where lions obviously died - she spotted a few up in trees. The pride was in a complete state.

The strange blue lioness walked the whole length of the lands right down to the beach, she spotted a few lions frantically searching for others but no one seemed to pay her any real attention. It didn't take long to work out what had happened, the whispers and cries coming from those who were still here, and still alive. She climbed up onto a rock near by and looked over the lands and a plan started forming in her mind. Whether her parents had told the truth or not was now irrelevant. Neith had found a home and she was going to rule it - though of course she would need to check the rulers were dead, or kill them. This was going to be her home now, it seemed she had arrived at the most perfect of times.

With the shock of being dropped in a tree by the waves fading, Mahatma carefully worked his way down to the ground. The teal lion looked around, eyes wide, hair dripping, before he raced down to the water. "MOTHER! FATHER!" He looked around, sides heaving. His brothers, his sisters... His family... Where were they all?! One of his brothers was a father now, was he alright? "Sahaja! Farooq, Uurmi! Lulu, Jalela, where are ye all?!" His paws were soon in the water, as he started out to sea. A tug on his tail made him look back, and find Dimbwi's worried eyes. He trembled, going back to her and leaning on her. "Ah can't find any of them... Ah can't find my family, my brothas and sistas..." He trembled, for the first time his usual joyful visage gone.

The lioness draped her head over her mate's back, ears folded down and back. "Oh, Ma'atma... I know the feeling..." She let out a sad sigh. "Come, we should go back to the pride's center... Maybe they washed up somewhere else on the shore..." She turned and began walking toward where everybody usually gathered, leading Mahatma behind her. All around was destruction, trees snapped and bodies on the beach and in the water, if they weren't washed far out to sea. She spared not one a look, afraid to look, afraid of memories.

He'd only been passing in the night, like a wandering spirit that never seemed to rest. When he'd felt the slight tremors, his first reaction was to look for Neltharion. But the God of Hate was nowhere to be seen, so the seafoam-green god went looking. What he found was... Chaos. It was as if Neltharion HAD visited, except nothing was burned. His mouth stretched into a thin line, as he opted to make his way to the beach. Things seemed to fare worse the closer to the water... Yet the sand still looked wonderful. It felt like a dark irony. His eyes soon fell on a light blue lioness on a rock, and he went up to her. "What 'appened 'ere...?" For the moment, a tsunami hitting hadn't yet occurred to him.

Kwaruza had been waiting and soon others came into view. She rushed towards Mahatma and Dimbwi as they neared the meeting point.

"Have you seen anyone else?" Her worry was obvious. "I can't find Tamu..." The queen was missing as well and she was worried the queen had drowned and what of her father? Oh she hadn't found anyone! She looked around so confused.

"How did this happen?" She let out a sigh and looked around again, the place was without doubt horrible.

----

Dufi had found herself stuck between two rocks and it had taken some major wriggling to get out. Her sides were aching like they were completely broken but she was sure she was okay. She made her way back towards the meeting ground and ran when she saw her mother, it was as if her sides were perfectly okay at least until she stopped then the pain was evident on her face.

She laid on her side and smiled up at the other two lions that were there.

"This was unexpected! The sea is normally so nice..." She did look completely confused apart from the winces of pain that kept appearing on her face.

----

Aysu had been walking when it hit, she had like many others been certain of her death - how she didn't die was something of a miracle. She had been lucky and had been deposited in a tree so once she had found her way down she found she was all in all in pretty good shape.

Aysu looked towards the sky and let out a cry, she couldn't see anyone.

"Mother? Father? Sisters? Brother?" She whispered the words knowing that they weren't there. She dragged herself to her paws and headed towards the dens where a few other lions had met together. She had been in training as a healer and so she ran over to them.

"Is everyone okay? I can go looking for medicine supplies but the water will have ruined most of them..." She thought she would offer anyway!

---

Neith had spotted the god heading towards her though she didn't know him for anything but another lion.

"Your guess is as good as mine. I only just got here myself, looking for family but I must say I don't know if I will have much luck finding them now." She looked around and sighed. "You seen any life walking through here? Guessing you don't live here either?" She asked, after all she would need to know who was part of the pride and who wasn't if she was going to rule this place.

"Might be worth looking around I suppose, someone must be alive." Neith needed a pride to rule, this was shambles at the moment.

The male shook his head, his own worry etched into his face. "No, we've seen few others... Ah was just lookin' fer my relatives... Ah can't find any of them.. Have ye seen ANY of them...?"

Dimbwi shuddered, looking back at the sea. "Maybe the gods are angry..." She couldn't imagine why. Unless her mother's domain was following her. She hoped it wasn't that. Very slowly, her tail curled, as she returned her gaze to Kwaruza, then to Dufi and then Aysu. "Maybe we should... Gather those we can... Organize search parties while the 'ealers take care of the injured..."

-------------

The god shook his head, then turned his gaze to the sea. "Looks like a tidal wave..." He let out a huff. "Been a couple lives since I last said 'ello to one. Very glad for that, they are never good." He then shook his head again. "I am not from around 'ere, no. I am an unwitting patron of a pride up the coast..." His ears went back. "I 'ope they are okay..." For some reason, though, he didn't want to go check just yet. Something told him to stay.

Like a wall of black, white and red, the three big males strode towards the beach.

Nahodha'kota looked at the land he had come to so many years before, so many years of living here without an error, without sadness and now, it seemed that the world had been turned upside down. The big jet black male looked at his two sons. He had managed to find them but no one else, Khepri, his blood red mate, where she was he didn't know and the rest of his children. Puffing his chest out the giant black male roared loudly and clambered down on to the beach that was still his home despite it's tragedy.

Posiedon looked across at his brother. All three of them had been washed further down the shore line, and together they had come together. Poseidon frowned. He had to find Iara and his cubs, he didn't know what he would do if any of them were gone. It squeezed his heart to know that they hadn't found his mother yet. Following his father down the beach he frowns looking, searching for the blue and black bodies, the brown of his only son.

Vuai sighs heavily. What had happened? What had happend. He frowns following his father and brother down the beach towards Kwaruza.

Coming to a heavy stop before Kwaruza, Dimbwi and Aysu, the old black male tilts his head "What do you need us to do?" 'Kota frowns heavily, his ject black eyes filled with ghosts, "We're okay to start a search if you need us."

-------

She was in the dark and water crashed against her legs. Some how, Tarni had managed to not get floated out of the den where she lived with her parents and her family. Her head hurt, meaning she must have knocked it on something she assumed. She smiled a little and nearly turned to snap at her brother for letting the water in, when she realised, there was no way all this water was in here because of her only male sibling. She remembered the thunder of the wave as it crashed in to the den. "Mum..Dad?" She frowns clambering to her paws, some of the den had caved in around her but she could see a light at the end of the tunnel she had no idea what was happening outside, or what had happened to make her family vanish, but she would find out, even if her head did feel like her brain was three times the size it should be. Kai had been pacing back and forth between two trees his mind muling over a new story to tell later on to the cubs. He wanted something a little more eventful then just the same friendship of the sea, or finding shells. The older adol's had heard those stories and could quote most of them by heart though the younger cubs were still rather amused by them. He was unaware of the events going on around him until he heard shouts from the guards and the movement of those who had once stood on the coast fleeing inland. Behind everything was a massive wall of shadow and water curling up and pounding into the ground as he remained staring at in awe and fear. He couldn't move he knew he had no where to run, no one to protect, instead he tightly closed his eyes as the surf pounded into his body.

Kai struggled to keep his body a float gasping for air as often as he could branches of trees pulled on his mane each time he tumbled through the water. As the water ebbed away he found himself hanging from a lower branches of tree his ribs aching each time he made an attempt to take in a deep breath. He at the moment was a little stuck.

She had been sleeping, nestled under a tree along the edge of the coast as the soft breeze of salt water kept her cool. Kai (Malie) had not seen the water recede into the ocean swelling in size until the rumbling grew far to close for comfort. She awoke rather confused yet with the lingering sensation that it was a rather familiar scene was about to take place as she stared in horror at the size of the oncoming sheet of water. Her first thought was to run but she was too late instead she clung to the tree wrapping her front paws around the trunk digging her nails as deeply as she could as the wave crashed into her insignificant body.

Kai (Malie) hung on as long as she could before she was torn away by sheer force and debris. Everything went dark until she work up coughing up seawater from her lungs confused and aware that something was missing something she had forgotten for a while that had lingered deep in the darkness of her mind.

"Kai?…… Kai……….KAI WHERE ARE YOU?"

Hera had been on her own for a walk when the wave came. She hadn't even realized what was happening, until the ground made such a strange noise and and then the sound of the wave startled her. She had turned to see it just in time for it to hit her square in the chest. She hadn't even realized she was swimming against the massive wave or that it had sucked her under more than once. She had been thrown into a bunch of palm trees and she clung to them for her life; her head pressed against the bark as the water receded.

She began to limp down... Limp? She was limping? She managed to get to the watery ground before she realized her hip hurt. She lay there, panting for a moment, getting her breath; before beginning to call for help. "Mother! FATHER!" She called, screamed!

Poseidon glanced at his brother and father his ears twitching. "Hera?" Flickering his tail he bolts up the beach. "Hera? HERA!" He runs to his black and white daughter and bends down grooming her ears. "Are you okay lassy? Come on, up ya get, daddy's here." He whispers, feeling terrified that he might have lost one of his children out there in that terrifying wave. Hera seemed okay, just a little shaken and possibly injured in some way or other but at least she was alive. "Come on darlin' Lets go an' find ya mother an' a healer eh?"

Umu had been napping in her den when the giant wave struck. The merciless wave gave her no time to react, and she awoke to being smashed against her den wall. It was excruciating and unbearable pain as her hip collided with a jagged rock, sending a bolt of fear down her spine.

Was her hip broken? Was it dislocated?

At the moment she could feel absolutely nothing but panic and fear. Her lungs felt like they were being crushed by the weight of the water on her, and she was unsure of when she was going to be able to breath again.

She was trapped, alone, in her den. Her father was not there. Her mother was not there. Her brothers and sisters were all in different places and she could not call out for any of them to help her. She could only pray that the sea's anger would subside and they would spare her.

It was than when she felt the water begin to recede and her fear came back to her. She did not want to be pulled into the endless ocean, for if she were truly injured like she expected she was, she would no doubt drown, unable to get back to shore. With panicked swipes in the water, Umu reached out for a large rock that sat in her den. The place she would crush her herbs to heal the pride. She clung desperately hoping for the water to soon leave her so she could breath again.

---------------------------------------------------

Fuo'Tamu had not been so lucky.

The mint green lioness had been at the shore's edge when the wave hit. She had been looking for materials to bring back to her mother for crafting, as she wanted to take up the same work as her mother. The wave had been so massive, and as it came upon the shores of the pride it let out a thundering roar that made the young adults tail shoot beneath her and her legs tremble.

Fuo had starred at it in fear, unable to move, when it finally crashed into her and threw her into the pride's lands. She hit several trees, getting caught once or twice within them. When her head got above water she screamed, calling to her mother, her father, and her Seer twin sister.

Such catastrophe. How could they have not foreseen this?

Beyler had been sleeping outside of the den of late. His mane had nearly grown in, and he was pondering choosing a new den for himself, with the hope of eventually having his own family within it. But to leave his family, his sisters... it was a hard decision, and one he didn't take lightly. Not that he took anything lightly, truth be told.

He had found himself a comfortable spot, a niche where the cliffs dropped before rising again. He wasn't on the same level as the beach at all, looking down upon it instead, but neither was he at the height of the cliffs. It was a good, somewhat hidden place to lay, think, and sleep. His dreams were troubled, filled with losing his sisters to some unknown danger that always loomed in the background, or of being buried beneath the loving but heavy bodies of his entire family. He thrashed in his sleep, jowls and paws twitching.

But then everything went wrong. There was a deafening roar that made it into his dreams, and then the world turned upside down. He wasn't even sure if he was awake or dreaming, for nothing looked or felt right. It was terrifying, for water surrounded him, but not in a way in which he could swim through it. Rocks and branches beat upon his body, and he by turns was pressed up against a cliffside or tumbled through open spaces, gobs of froth and glittering water floating in the air around him.

It all came to a shuddering halt when he found himself slammed heavily against a solid rock surface. The water flowed on without him, leaving him to slump in place, dazed and still uncertain what was real and what was dream. Dizzy and sick, he closed his eyes and let time move on without him for a while.

((Consider him still missing, I've had him somehow land on a large rock outcropping out at sea. When it settles, he will be surrounded by water and not visible from the shore.))

***************************************************************

Ur'ahava was awakened by the cries of the guards. Though not on duty, his ears were always tuned into signs of trouble, so that he would be ready to assist when he was needed most. He took a moment to assure himself that his mother was safe before bounding out of the den. Others were appearing from the dens, looking afraid or confused. The two guards were rushing towards them, bawling for them to run. Run? Run where? From what? There just wasn't enough information for him to launch into helping them evacuate people. He opened his mouth to call to them to explain better, when the wave came into sight. It already was surging up the beach, snarling and roaring like a massive lion at war.

Ur took a breath to bellow with the guards for everyone to run, but the wave was too fast. Instead of shouting, he found himself having to hold that breath as the water overwhelmed them all.

Time stopped having any meaning. He was thrown about like a dead rabbit in a cub's paws. Tree trunks rushed up at him, only to race past or slam painfully into this or that part of his body. The world was black, though wet or full of air by turns. He heard cries of others, but found himself busy trying to stay alive himself. He dully got into a routine that allowed him to avoid most obstacles, but debris was rushing alongside him. This became a problem once, when he barely managed to maneuver around a huge boulder (or was it a mountainside?), using his paws to pivot himself around its unmoving bulk. But a huge tree branch, coming up behind him, slammed into the boulder with a sickening thud... his right forepaw caught between.

He roared in pain, a different kind of blackness closing in on him. Too tired, too worn out, he couldn't find it within himself to fight it. Resigned and almost relieved, he let himself slide into unconsciousness, still carried by the madness of water and flotsam. His fate was in the paws of the gods now, was his last thought before he lost all track of time and location.

Zephyr had snuck out once again to watch the waves that danced along the shore line. She hadn't thought twice about falling asleep in the shallow surf until she heard it. Despite the calls from the Guard, Zephyr didn't rise until she saw the looming wave infront of her, and before she could even so much as scream was swallowed up.

The adolescent choked on the air pressure building in her lungs. She felt her body being beaten up against the sides of things, but didn't dare open her eyes. She couldn't swim; she couldn't even breathe! Zephyr needed air, and she needed it fast. With desperate strokes, she managed to swim hard enough to grab onto a surface, and with a push, broke free of the water.

With gasping breaths, she looked around. The first thing she could see was that she was in...a tree? On one of it's lower branches, and then panic set in. Why wasn't her right eye working? And why did it hurt so much? She tentatively touched it with her paw, only to pull back with a hiss, unable to see the ugly gash that bi-sected her eye.

Zephyr waited in the tree for a while, closing her eyes to block out the roars of her fellow lions. And when she could stand the pain no more, she slipped down from the tree, her head low, searching for what was left of her family. Then she saw him. And then he turned into they. Her father, uncle, grand-father, and sister! Zephyr roared her call, and shakily made her way to their side.

-------------------

Why hadn't she told anyone? How many lives could have been saved if she'd just told someone? Clea carried her unconcious son in her maw, careful to step over the wreckage of her pride. Tears burned in her eyes. The normally strong, invincible lioness was no more. She was a guard who had failed in her duty, a seer who hadn't believed her visions, and a mother who couldn't protect her sons.

Atl shook himself awake. For a moment, he didn't remember, but when he saw a few lions clinging to trees it dawned on him. The Ocean had tried to destroy them. "Mother?" He murmured, looking up to make sure it was she that carried him. When he saw her tears, he felt his heart sink.

Where was his brother? His father? His friends? And why were they punished?
