Come on, you two," Jaci called back impatiently over her shoulder. She was practically vibrating with impatience, as usual. "Seriously, by the time we get there it's gonna be the wet season again!"
As a scout Jaci was familiar with the river banks and what grew there. The river had shrunken so that some things that had been under water were now easier to get at without worrying about crocs. For one shallow pools of water that trapped fish. There were also the roots of latas flowers. They weren't very tasty and you had to dig, but when food got scarce you weren't picky about what you ate. The bulbs, at least, could be dried and stored for later. Or maybe for a medicine, but that was Kaname's territory.

Raz rolled his eyes. He wasn't entirely sure how he'd gotten roped into this, or at least that's what he was saying. In reality he was always around Jaci when he got the chance. As a hunter and fierce little bundle of fur, he could both protect the hyper permakit and maybe catch something to bring back to the tribe later. There was another addition to the group though...
Raz wasn't quite sure how the friendship with Anubis had started up. Since he didn't know he just didn't question it. That was how he'd found Jaci, after all, and look how that had turned out. Well, being dragged along on insane missions aside. Seriously, Raz didn't know how she'd managed to survive as long as she had. it was like she just didn't think before rushing into things!
So Raz just rolled his eyes, gave Anubis a pained, side-long look, then tried to hurry his step to catch up with Jaci. Kind of annoying that Anubis didn't have to hurry to keep up with either of them though...

The guardian padded after the kits, easily keeping up with them at nothing more than a fast walk. He knew they would look odd to any observer that wasn't part of the tribe, and thus used to the trio, but Anubis wasn't one to care about appearances much. He enjoyed the company of the two permas.
Catching Raz's look, Anubis shot him a small smile. Jaci was impatient as ever. Wet season? They'd reach their destination in only a few minutes...if that. Still, he stretched his stride a little, not moving faster, just taking bigger steps. He also made sure he didn't accidently step on anyone's tail. "We're right behind you, Jaci." Anubis said from above her, humor tingeing his tone slightly.

Jaci spun around so that she was now trotting backwards. "You're more above me than behind me," she stated, having to tilt her head so far back it was almost resting on her shoulder blades, just to look at Anubis' face. "Raz is more behind me. Whoa!"
Unseen by her, Jaci had managed to trip in a small hole in the earth. Probably a mouse lair, or something of that nature.

Raz rolled his eyes. Once upon a time he would have freaked out and scolded Jaci like a mother hen. Well, something like that. He was probably a good contender for least vocal in the tribe. He just trotted up to Jaci and nudged her back to her feet, waiting for her to spring back into the lead.
This walk probably wasn't necessary. It wasn't far, but it did take up time since their legs were so short. Raz would have bet that Anubis would have carried them if they asked. He knew from personal experience how quickly Anubis covered ground too, that one time Raz had gotten mad for some reason or another and pounced at Anubis' leg. His pride still smarted when he remembered that Anubis not only seemed concerned by tiny teeth and claws, but started striding away like it was nothing. Raz had to hold on for dear life, at that point.
But no. Jaci had a thing about heights, and though it was getting better so that she might climb on others, she didn't trust "flappers" to remain firmly on the ground. Her other reasoning was that it was harder to see things on the ground from high up, even as high as Anubis' back. He had the urge to sigh again. He loved his friend like crazy, but there were just those days.

"Walking like that, I'm technically in front of you." Anubis pointed out in amusement. The huge guardian stopped dead in his tracks when Jaci tripped, not wanting to squish his friend underfoot. He waited for Raz to help their friend before resuming his walk.
"Are you all right, Jaci?" Anubis asked in concern trips and spills happened, but getting a paw stuck in a hole was bad news. It was very easy to break an ankle by putting a paw in a hole. Anubis lowered his head and tilted it slightly in order to peruse his tiny friend.

Jaci actually stopped to think about it before replying. She rotated her paw a couple times, then slapped it down on the ground. "Hmmm, that didn't hurt. Guess it's fine!" She leveled a cheerful look at Raz and Anubis. "Thanks for asking, Nubi, nice to know ya care." She turned and resumed their walk before her little trip.

Raz tossed a slightly jealous glare at Anubis. He'd been the one to help Jaci up, didn't he get thanks? Okay, maybe he should have asked if she was alright, but it was still early and voculizations weren't really his thing so much. He opened his mouth, about to voice a measure of concern, and-, "Watch where you're going next time, fuzz ball," -popped out. Ugh, looked like sensitive wasn't something he did naturally.

"Of course, Jaci. We are friends, after all." Anubis said, smiling down at the tiny blue perma. He barely caught the glare Raz shot at him out of the corner of his eye and raised his own eyebrows in return. He was about to ask the male perma what was wrong when Raz voiced his concern...in a very Raz-like way. Anubis tilted his head to look at the sky and hide a smirk at the black and white perma's tactlessness.
Of course, Anubis was about to say the same thing...only nicer.

Jaci snorted, though not in an unfriendly way. "Big bat flapper like you, with a spooky mug and paws that could squish me if you don't watch out," she shot back cheekily over her shoulder. "Uuuuuh huh, we look exactly like we'd be the best of friends." She giggled, winked, then hastened her pace to a scamper.

Raz was slightly cheered up by Jaci's saucy comment. Sure, bat flapper was what she called anything with draconic wings; feather wings were simply flappers. But he was definetly better suited to Jaci in the sense of size. With that in mind Raz was feeling a bit more friendly towards Anubis than he had been a moment ago.
"I say you just pick her up and deal with her outrage later," he commented to Anubis, unable to actually mutter since it was doubtful he'd hear Raz but confident enough that Jaci was too far away to hear.
"Geez, wait up," he called after the other perma. "Are we there yet or what?" He sped up himself, breaking into a trot then a sort of scamper of his own.

"Raz has a point, Jaci. My big spooky mug can pick you up by the tail and carry you to our destination if you aren't going to be nice." He teased, clicking his beak at her. Not that he would pick her up without her permission, he was well aware that she didn't feel nearly as secure when held by winged creatures. Otherwise he'd have carried them both and not even noticed the extra weight.
Anubis watched the scampering kits and shook his head. Jaci was right too. Who would ever look at this trio and think: There go three best friends? It was laughable, but there they were. And none of the trio cared, really.

Jaci didn't answer immediately, because they were almost there. The river wasn't all too far from where the tribe normally lived, far enough away so that they didn't get washed out when the river swelled up in the rainy season, but close enough that they could pretty much see the river once it was at it's fullest. Well, depending on your point of viewing and all. Jaci needed height before she could see much.
Finally the reached the softer ground that had once been underwater, the spot just short of turning into muck. The river flowed behind her, shruken and sluggish. This was actually one of the few times she didn't have to worry about crocs wanting to come up on land to attack. They'd much rather take the easier option of fish stuck in pools than work for their meal.
She looked up at the slow-appraching Anubis, grinning. "Hah, I could dive in the water and you'd neeeeever catch me," she said. Which was true enough after the rains when the river was wide again, though probably not so true now.
"And Raz is really good about hiding behind your feet so you can't grab him, cause he's all sneaky like that," she continued, shooting a grin towards the black and white perma now running up to her.

Raz, only now catching up with Jaci, gave her his equivilent of a smile with was a small grunt and a more neutral expression rather than his customary frown. Right now though he was more interesting in making sure Jaci wasn't going to get eaten by a croc sneaking up behind her. Just cause it wasn't likely didn't mean it couldn't happen, and Jaci could be careless sometimes. Probably because she'd never grown up in waters containing predators other than fish.

"Hmm...perhaps. I have to admit that you are the faster swimmer. After all, I'm large and my wings are rather bulky. However, if you think I'm foolish enough to try and catch you by swimming..." He trailed off and chuckled. "I tend to stick with what I am good at and I think it would be more akin to an eagle catching a very small, very furry fish. You're a little too bright to hide in the water too effectively, Jaci. As for Raz..." Anubis leaned down and eyed the black and white perma. "Have you learned to fly yet, Raz?" He asked on a grin. He sent his tail around the other side and poked both kits gently in the side with it.
Anubis lifted his head again and did a quick scan. He was guardian and, fun as it was to be with his two mini friends, the fun wasn't about to drown out his instincts. Plus, he could see further than Raz since he was just a little bit taller. Taking note of a few predators that were both at a safe distance and currently occupied with other matters, he turned back to the kits.
