Set'al and Pipith - Dragonriders of Pern

Name: Set'al (formerly Sethal)
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Weyrling, former Apprentice Runner

History:
Like most Runners, Set'al was born into the craft. There are Runners in his family pretty much all the way back, and it was always expected that he would be the same, which is fine by him. He was an only child, and more than happy to follow in his parents' footsteps.

...until he decided to watch a Hatching at Telgar and Pipith came snarling into the stands looking for him.

Appearance:
Tall and lean, a good portion of Set'al's height of 6'1" is leg, making him well-suited to his former Craft. He has straight, medium-brown hair that just brushes his shoulders, expressive green eyes and a hawkish nose, and the result is handsome.

Personality:
Like any good Runner, Sethal is as trustworthy as they come. He would never have even thought of reading someone's message, much less not delivering it at all - not only would there have been serious consequences, it's just plain wrong. The only lies he ever tells are white (ask him if your hair looks okay, and the answer will always be yes), and he wants nothing whatsoever to do with getting in trouble.

The truth is, though, he doesn't always stay out of it. He has a little bit of a problem in that he's not very good at keeping track of time, and is easily distracted - a bad combination for a Runner! Urgent messages were not for Sethal; there was a good chance it wouldn't get there as quickly as it should. He doesn't mean to get sidetracked, he really doesn't, it's just so hard to say no sometimes, whether it's to himself or to someone else. An hour or two won't hurt, surely...

Set'al just cannot resist stopping to smell the flowers, as it were. Oh, you just finished making dinner and would love it if he stayed awhile? Of course he'd hang around! A pretty lady would like a little something special with her delivery? He'd be happy to oblige! You have dragons about to Hatch? No way he'd miss that kind of show!

At the rate he was going, he was going to need to shape up or find something else to do with himself. He couldn't be an Apprentice forever, but with his habit, well...his chances of ever becoming a Journeyman were slim to none.

Pipith, however, has quite taken care of that: not only does Set'al now have something else to do, his dragon is going to make sure he shapes up, too.

BRONZE PIPITH

User Image
Jr. Weyrling
Pipith was coloured by Chibi Sheepcat

Sethal! Why were you not down with the rest of the boys? Nevermind, your Pipith has come to get you! Now let's go! We don't have time for this! I want to eat!

Personality

The first thing that you need to know about Pipith is that he's tough, tougher than any bronze in this whole Weyr and you better not forget it. Best described as having tiny dog syndrome, his size is something that will bother him for his entire life. He will always be on the smaller side of the scale, perhaps almost small enough to be considered a brown from afar. It would have been alright if Akerth was his only problem. Though the brown was bigger than him when they hatched, he knows he has a chance to out shine him once he grows up a little. But Morgath.... Pipith will always be smaller and that bothers him to no end.

Because he cannot influence how large he grows – though not for trying (his Rider has to make sure he doesn’t overeat early on in life) – he does his best to influence everything else he can get his claws into. A highly competitive individual, he almost needs to be the best just to convince himself that he's good enough to be a bronze. During Weyrling lessons he will always be the first to volunteer, even if he doesn't have the slightest clue what is going on. He wants first dibs on meat, has to be the first one up in the morning, and the first one in the lake even if he has to get up before the suns rise. How far he takes his obsession with being the best will depend on the hand of his rider. Should his rider temper him and focus his energies on something more constructive, Pipith could in time become a strong, well-rounded Wingleader. Should he let his bronze get away with it, he will quickly find that Pipith will rule their relationship as he sees fit.

As hard as he is on both his rider and himself, his rider will have to understand that for the most part he's all bark and no bite. Pipith needs his rider to be both his confidant and his support, especially in times of trial. This bronze does not take losing well.

Pipith makes sure to participate in every Flight ever, whether it be green, gold, or even a stray blue (hey, he looked a little green from afar okay?). It is his desire to one day become Weyrleader, and he expects the same passion from his rider.

Views on Clutchmates:

He has the tendency to see all males as competition, for anything from female dragons to his share of food. Though he is tolerant of the majority of his clutchmates, Pipith hates Morgath with a vengeance. The only reason he allows himself to remain in the vicinity of the other bronze is to make sure that he's still on top.

His rider may also find Pipith enjoys a bit of a love-hate relationship with Vespereth, the clutch's "baby" as it were. He certainly seems to enjoy pestering her, but he isn't about to let anyone else do it for him. The fact that she chooses to run to Morgath over him is something that will bother him endlessly, even though he'll swear up and down he doesn't care for greens.

Why Me?

Sethal definitely needs to shape up and—SETHAL PAY ATTENTION. This is no time to be getting distracted! What Pipith saw was a boy he could grab a hold of and make into something. Being an apprentice puts the boy at the bottom of the totem pole, so to speak, which is something that this bronze can understand. While Sethal may not have the proper ambition to drive himself up to the top, Pipith certainly has enough for both of them, and he will make sure they make something of themselves. Sethal may also find that his calmer, more easy going temperament can in time soothe the snarling Pipith, who needs a rider to show him there's more to life than competition. In return, the bronze will make sure his rider doesn't spend too much time getting waylaid. They have work to do, after all.

Though they may butt heads in the beginning, Pipith chose a rider that he could put his absolute faith in. Sethal's honest and trustworthy nature was what sealed the deal for this bronze. They may not agree on the best way to get to the end goal, but at least at the end of the day they'll still be together as one.

Pipith is based off of the...

Hoary marmot

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The hoary marmot (Marmota caligata) is a species of marmot that inhabits the mountains of northwest North America. The largest populations are in Alaska. Hoary marmots live near the tree line on slopes with grasses and forbs to eat and rocky areas for cover. It is the largest North American ground squirrel and is often nicknamed "the whistler" for its high-pitched warning issued to alert other members of the colony to possible danger. The animals are sometimes called "whistle pigs." Whistler, British Columbia, originally London Mountain because of its heavy fogs and rain, was renamed for these animals to help make it more marketable as a resort.

The "hoary" in their name refers to the silver-grey fur on their shoulders and upper back; the remainder of the upper parts are mainly covered in reddish brown fur. The underparts are greyish. They have a white patch on the muzzle and black feet and lower legs.

Set'al and Pipith - Dragonflight: An Alternative Pern

Character Name: Set'al (formerly Sethal)
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft/Rank: Wingrider (former Runner Apprentice)
History:
Like most Runners, Set'al was born into the craft. There are Runners in his family pretty much all the way back, and it was always expected that he would be the same, which is fine by him. He was an only child, and more than happy to follow in his parents' footsteps.

...until, while delivering a letter, he decided to watch a Hatching at Southern, and Pipith came snarling into the stands looking for him. His Weyrlinghood was something of a rollercoaster ride while he adjusted to this abrupt change and his strong-willed, ambitious dragon. Eventually, they settled into a relatively comfortable relationship and matured into Wingriders. They perform well, thanks to the bronze's fierce desire to be the best, as long as Set'al keeps him from getting carried away trying to one-up someone.

There has been, for both of them, one constant irritation in their six Turns as a pair: another bronze dragon that Pipith absolutely could not abide. No amount of persuasion from his rider could change this deep-seated hatred, which finally came to a head when a junior gold rose, and he and his rival both lost when they bumped into each other. The situation degraded into a fight, and though it was stopped before there were any serious injuries, it was much too close for comfort.

Set'al immediately opted to transfer.

Description:

An hour or two can't hurt, surely...

Pipith, however, took care of that quite handily.

Set'al isn't the least bit bothered by the Atypical dragons in their new Weyr; as far as this Holdborn rider is concerned, a dragon is a dragon. If anything, he finds the other colors fascinating.

Pipith
[insert image here]

The first thing that you need to know about Pipith is that he's tough, tougher than any bronze ever and you better not forget it. Best described as having tiny dog syndrome, his size is something that has bothered him from the day he Hatched. He's very much on the smaller side of the scale, perhaps almost small enough to be considered a brown from afar.

Since he can't do anything about his size, he does his best to influence everything else he can get his claws into. A highly competitive individual, he almost needs to be the best just to convince himself that he's good enough to be a bronze. During Weyrling lessons, he was always the first to volunteer, even if he didn't have the slightest clue what was going on. He had to have first dibs on meat, had to be the first one up in the morning, and the first one in the lake even if he had to get up before sunrise. How far he takes his obsession with being the best depends on the hand of his rider. With Set'al to temper him and focus his energies on something more constructive, Pipith could in time become a strong, well-rounded dragon, but it's a work in progress. Most of the time, their relationship is a friendly tug-of-war between their respective desires.

As hard as he is on both his rider and himself, Set'al understands that for the most part Pipith's all bark and no bite. Pipith needs his rider to be both his confidant and his support, especially in times of trial. This bronze does not take losing well.

Pipith makes sure to participate in every Flight ever, whether it be green, gold, crimson, or even a stray blue (hey, he looked a little green from afar okay?). It is his desire to one day become Weyrleader, and he's taking Set'al along for the ride whether he likes it or not.

Much like his rider, Pipith doesn't mind moving in with Atypical dragons. Crimsons just mean more females to be chased, and since the rest - being infertile - aren't potential competition, he accepts them without issue.

Why Set'al?
Sethal definitely needs to shape up and—SETHAL PAY ATTENTION. This is no time to be getting distracted! What Pipith saw was a boy he could grab a hold of and make into something. Being an apprentice put the boy at the bottom of the totem pole, so to speak, which is something that this bronze can understand. B'ram and Nachith - Dragonriders of Pern

Name: B'ram (Belram)
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft: N/A
Rank: Candidate

History:
B'ram is a Weyrbrat, and has lived a life typical of one. His mother worked (and still does) in the Weyr's kitchens, and claims that his father is a brownrider; as she has always declined to reveal which, however, it remains an unsubstantiated claim.

Appearance:
At 5'7", B'ram is neither short nor tall, with a lean, fit build. With short, dark brown hair and warm brown eyes, he is passingly attractive, but not exceptionally so.

Personality:
B'ram is, in a word, charming. It's no accident, either! It's a trait he's done his best to cultivate, as there's little he likes more than to make friends - especially of the female persuasion. He'll go out of his way to help or be kind to someone, always hoping to gain himself a new friend (maybe a little more, if the person in question is a girl). As a result, he has a good-sized circle of casual friends and pleasant acquaintances, although he's short on real, close friends. Those he does become close to, he also becomes extremely loyal to; right or wrong, he will defend them.

While he does have a way with girls, he's actually quite serious about it! He doesn't forget to call, as it were. He becomes attached very quickly, and is also quite protective. Should they want one (or not), a female in need will always have a ready protector in B'ram.

B'ram takes rejection very personally and seriously. As social as he is, it's hard for him when someone doesn't like or is mean to him. It can set him moping for days, if it's bad enough. This makes him susceptible to bullying, harsh criticism, and other such things.

Blue Nachith

User Image
Jr. Weyrling

Belram! Run! Hurry!

Nachith was inspired by the song True to Your Heart by 98 Degrees and was colored by Kaelyndra.

This blue is a peculiar breed of womanizer. Why? He sincerely cares about the female he's trying to charm. At first. Paying attention in all walks of life will be a chore for Nachith. His rider best be ready for some trouble ahead in Weyrling lessons, because no matter how many times he's told to focus, it's not going to happen. Likewise, he'll get bored of whatever green he sets his sights on in time and become infatuiated with another shortly there after. He's convinced all of them should welcome his advances. It's not as if they'll do any better.

Nachith knows his place and he expects everyone to know theirs. A bronze chasing a green is ridiculous. A green expecting to be chased by one even more so. He is more than happy to listen to the higher ups, so long as they're gold or bronze. Unsure of where to categorize them, Nachith has an aversion to browns. They don't belong with him and the greens, and they don't belong with the metals, so where do they go? Everything must have a place and duty in Nachith's world or he doesn't consider it important. Sentimental value? That's not really worth anything, so forget about it.

Hopefully, he'll never end up with a brown wingleader, or there's going to be more grief for his rider. Assuming he's put under the command of a bronze intimidating enough to make him listen, Nachith will follow orders well. Only if he really, truly knows he's right will he question his leader's motives or ideas. If he thinks something is wrong, His should know it's worth looking into. His rider could tell you he's surprisingly level headed when it comes to matters not involving the heart. Just keep him out of reach of Lofrewth, his current target. (And Deprith who is just sharding scary!)

He always has a favorite, but he will gladly participate in any green flight. It's all in good fun. Only if the dragon rising is his current heart's desire will he take it seriously. Otherwise, win or lose, he'll be just fine.

But why?!

Isn't it obvious? Belram has a good heart, strong loyalty and knows how to treat a lady right. Nachith wouldn't pick anyone but another smoooooth guy as his partner in crime. They can also whine to each other when they get rejected! Hurray!

...Wait.

Ma'k and Kassieth - Dragonriders of Pern

Rider Name: Ma'k (Maldryk)
Rider Age: 23
Rider Gender: Male
Rider Sexuality: Heterosexual

Rider History:
As normal as it gets. Just like his personality, Ma'k's history is largely unexciting. Born a Weyrbrat, he knows who his parents are but doesn't really have a relationship with them. He Stood from the time he was old enough, and Impressed at 17. He received a minor mauling from a blue during the same Hatching, to then be found by Kassieth.
Rider Personality:
Ma'k is, in a word, steady. He is reliable, level-headed, and consistent. He can always be relied on to do what's asked of him to the very best of his ability - exactly what's asked of him. You're not likely to get less or more from this brownrider, who lacks both ambition and creativity. It's not that he's lazy, he just doesn't have motivation beyond wanting to do his job; he works hard to do what needs to be done, but is completely unconcerned with any rank-climbing...or what anyone thinks of him, for that matter.

Ma'k is a pretty boring individual, with only a basic sense of humor. He'll have a good chuckle if someone falls victim to their own stupidity or clumsiness (not watching where they're going, etc.), as long as it's nothing dangerous - that will only merit a disapproving frown. He has no patience for those who take needless risks, or those who don't take their job seriously. Dragonriding is srs bzns, guys. :<

His social views are all typical of Telgar Weyr - progressive is not a word that will ever apply to Ma'k. He does accept female greenriders to some extent, if only because it makes things somewhat more appealing when Kassieth chases.
Rider Appearance:
Ma'k is a very stocky 5'6", attractive if muscular men are your thing. He keeps his black hair cropped short, and sports a heavy tan and hazel eyes. Overall, he looks like the hard-working, serious person he is. Scars on his left thigh from a confused blue on the Sands.

BROWN KASSIETH
Mine, why are you bleeding? Your Kassieth does not like it. Please do not bleed, MaldrykMine!

Kassieth is a creature of habit. He is happiest when his life is in a proper order, and routines are his best friend. Because of this, he performs exceeding well in wing drills, the repetitive motions both comforting and easy for him to remember. On the flipside, however, when his life is turned on its head or something is misplaced he can work himself up into quite a tizzy. At times like this he relies heavily on Ma'k for support and guidance, drawn to him originally for his steady personality. His rider must not only soothe him when he is distressed but also ensure that he remembered everything he needs to know, as the moment Kassieth becomes all a flutter he forgets even the simplest of things. The most important thing that His must remember – at least, in the brown's mind – is his rock collection. Kassieth picked up a strange habit of collecting interesting coloured stones when he was a Weyrling. He originally stored his little collection near his bed in the Weyrling Barracks, but after several bouts of panic attacks when he couldn't find them he decided to leave them with Ma'k. Every now and again he likes his rider to bring them out so he can look at them, clearly pleased with himself for collecting such a fine set of rocks.

Like his rider, he shares a similar approach to being a dragon and rider pair. When he is working he will not be disturbed, and hates having his focus broken (especially during wing drills). He follows orders without a moment's hesitation, and will not question them unless his rider believes that they are unsound. Kassieth is not the type of dragon who pushes his rider to be more or try harder, but rather, relies on Ma'k to set the pace for them. If Ma'k feels strongly about something then Kassieth will put everything he has behind his rider. For the most part, however, the brown is content with his place in the Weyr and likes the status quo very much. Much like how he deals with the little changes in his life, big changes are very hard for Kassieth, and he needs Ma'k to help him work through things whenever he feels like his foundations are being shaken. The recent struggle for the Weyrwoman position is something that this brown doesn't enjoy thinking about, and would much rather close his eyes and wait until the storm is over than take a side. He just wants his nice, peaceful, ordered life back, and quickly.

Flights are an interesting time for Kassieth. He certainly doesn't go after every green that Rises, but there are times when he seems to develop a slight "crush" on a green and will chase her with everything he has. This brown has the potential for being a one-green-brown, but unless his rider shows a tendency towards that kind of relationship then he is content to indulge in his little "crushes."

Li'lah and Bayeth - Dragonriders of Pern

Name: Li'lah (Delilah)
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft: None
Rank: Jr. Weyrling

History: Parents? What parents? Li'lah grew up a perfectly ordinary Weyrbrat, and perfectly fine with that. Her life so far has been perfectly ordinary as well, though largely devoid of friends. Her personality doesn't exactly draw people to her.

Appearance: Li'lah is relatively short, about 5'2", and about as plump as a busy candidate can reasonably be. She has blue eyes and shoulder-length medium-brown hair, and a round face that could be pleasant if she actually decided to smile.

Personality: Li'lah's one of those people who walks around with their own personal raincloud to keep them company, and not much else. She is a complete and total pessimist who spends most of her time brooding over what can go wrong where - and it will go wrong, of that she is absolutely sure. The worst is always a possiblity, and she's not going to ignore that; quite the opposite, she is hyper-aware of the potential for failure, especially her own. She goes into everything she does with the thought that she's not going to succeed, or at the very best scrape by. Over time, it's turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy: there's no point in trying hard if you're just going to fail anyway, so she doesn't, and consequently fails.

She was, in fact, quite convinced that she would never Impress a dragon, and was more likely to get mauled and die. It does happen, after all, and it would have been just her luck to be the one it happened to sometime! Still, if she hadn't Impressed Bayeth, she'd have stayed a Candidate until she was too old to be one - a day she dreaded. Not only did she not know what she'd do when that day came, she absolutely loathes change. Change is one of the few things she is really, honestly afraid of; for example, she'd rather stay at High Reaches and get the plague (which, to her mind, is a definite possiblity) than move to Ghenza and be subjected to something new and different. She will resist change with everything she has - a drive she lacks in all other areas.

A peculiar result of her pessimism, Li'lah is nearly unshakable. She's spent so much time thinking about how things can go wrong and believing they will that when they do, she's ready for it! She accepts bad situations quite calmly and without fear. She's also completely unconcerned with appearances or with what other people think of her...since they probably don't like her, and trying to change that is, of course, pointless. She might be a failure, but at least she's an independent one.

Li'lah isn't much of a talker, but when she does pipe up, it's often to share her bleak outlook on whatever the current situation or subject is. It's not a conscious effort to bring people down, she just feels that they should be informed. Then they won't be surprised when things go south, and if they are, she can pull out the 'I told you so.'

BLUE BAYETH

User Image
Jr. Weyrling

Delilah... come and help your Bayeth. My foot is stuck. Please?

Bayeth would just like to take this opportunity to point out that he's no wonder dragon. He's just a little blue (a bit on the chubby side, now that you mention it) who knows his place and does his work. So really, you shouldn't stare at him like he's got hidden potential like Salth, because really, he doesn't. Just so we're all on the same page here.

Some might call it low self-esteem, but to Bayeth he sees his choice of temperament as acceptance. He knows he's only average and that suits him just fine. There's not much that this little blue doesn't accept, tolerant of just about anything when it comes to his person. Children poking his headknobs, firelizards sunning on his back, other dragons resting various body parts on him; he is 100% fine with all of that. He likes company, and since he can't always get up the courage to say what he wants, he's quite happy to let other dragons (and humans) "walk all over him" in a sense just so that they'll hang around him. When he's old enough to live in his own weyr, his weyr-neighbour will find him to be a very hospitable blue, eager to share and make sure that his partner is well and comfortable. Children will find him to be exceeding gentle and patient, and he may in time make a good Search or teaching dragon.

While he's tolerant of the here and the now, Bayeth is a huge worry wart. He has a very bad habit of "worrying out loud" as it were, broadcasting his thoughts to the greater area whenever he thinks there's a problem. It's not always words from this blue; sometimes he just sits in the opening of his weyr (or when he's younger, on his Weyrling bed) and bays his woes to the Weyr. When something bad is coming, be it anything as small as a visiting gold he doesn't trust or a winter storm, Bayeth feels the need to tell everyone. For a dragon he has a surprisingly good weather sense, which may be the only thing that helps smooth over his baying habits.

The only other time he's vocal to this extent is during Flights. Though he may not always participate, Bayeth can rival a Rising Gold with his voice whenever a green manages to excite him.

Food will always be one of Bayeth's weak spots, and no matter what his rider does he'll always be a little on the tubby side. But that just makes him more comfortable to rest on, right?

WHY ME?
Delilah, we'd like to introduce your raincloud to its companion.

Worry wart Bayeth can understand Delilah. Bad things happen and they happen a lot. Just because people try and make the best of them doesn't mean they don't exist, and he is happy to share his woes with his rider. And while he's never ready for it, Delilah's independence will help him be ready for it. Bayeth, in return, will offer his gentle, unshakeable companionship and together they can ride out the bad times whenever they come.

Bayeth's correctness when it comes to weather woes may help people take his rider more seriously whenever she points out the not-so-bright side of life. His graciousness and tolerance of people may also, in time, help her make a few more friends in the Weyr.

Bayeth is based off of the ...

Basset Hound

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog of the hound family. They are scent hounds, bred to hunt rabbits by scent. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to that of the Bloodhound. The name Basset is derived from the French word bas, meaning "low", with the attenuating suffix -et, together meaning "rather low". Basset hounds are commonly brown and black and most often spotted, but also exist in a variety of colors.

The Basset Hound is seen as an especially friendly breed. For this reason they are an excellent pet for children. Many Bassets "forget" the training when a reward is not present. Bassets should be on a leash when out on walks.

Bassets are known to be a vocal breed. Bassets might howl or bark when they want something or to suggest that they think something is wrong (like a storm is coming). They also use a low, murmuring whine to get attention, which sounds to many owners as though their Bassets are "talking." This whine is also used by the hound to beg (for food or treats) and varies in volume depending on the nature of the individual hound and length of time it has been begging.

O'ri and Green Palisanth - Dragonriders of Pern

Name: O'ri (formerly Omria)
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Rank: Weyrlingmaster

History:
O'ri - short for Omria - was born a weyrbrat. Both of her parents are Lower Caverns workers, and she's acquainted with them both, though she doesn't have a close relationship with them. She does like them, and is rather attached to them, but not unordinarily so...not for her, anyway, because she gets attached to people very easily.

At the age of 14, she received quite the mauling from an angry hatchling, which she admits was probably her fault. The green, while inspecting the available candidates, stopped to consider her, and seemed as though it might choose her - prompting Omria to reach out and touch it (hey, it seemed like a good idea at the time). The dragonet didn't take kindly to the gesture, and attacked the presumptuous teenager. Fortunately for the girl, Palisanth came to the rescue and chased the other green away.

This has a great deal to do with O'ri's acceptance of her scars, since they're more than a reminder of her mistake: they're a reminder of the day Palisanth first called her Mine. Since then, their life and progression has been relatively ordinary - except for their promotion to Weyrlingmaster, which has them both excited. Babies~!

Appearance:
O'ri's second most notable feature is her height - she's short, standing about 5'1". What most people notice first, though, is the scarring on the right side of her face/head, which came courtesy of an angry hatchling. The angle was such that nothing vital was damaged, but she is missing most of her right ear. Rather than keep her hair down to hide it, however,
she's accepted it, and most of the time keeps her dark brown hair tied back. Her eyes are a pleasant honey-brown, and her complexion is average. She has some scarring elsewhere as well, but most people don't see that. ;D Her figure is appropriately feminine, but not exceptional. Seen from the left side, at least, she's pretty, but not stunning by any means.

Personality:
Happy, happy, happy! The greenrider is rarely anything but cheerful, no matter the time of day or, to some extent, the situation. She has a smile - and yes, a hug! - for almost everyone. She'll talk to anyone and everyone, and if you ask her, she'll tell you she has too many friends to count. You see, if you're even a little nice to her, she considers you a friend; she gets attached to people very, very easily. She likes almost everyone she meets from the moment she meets them, and has to be given ample reason for that opinion to change. Even then, you'll probably get another chance - or two or three.

The quickest way to wipe the smile off her face is to say something mean. Unkind words, or even especially harsh criticism, can cause her to tear up a little - although she doesn't run away and cry the way she used to! Palisanth has helped her to mature, at least to some extent. She'll probably retain her almost childlike view of the world forever...or try to, anyway. Sadness is something that can easily overwhelm her, since it's something of a foreign emotion, one she doesn't quite know how to deal with; she relies heavily on her dragon's support during trying times, like what High Reaches has recently experienced.

The Weyrleader murdered accidentally in place of the Weyrwoman? It's utterly horrifying! O'ri has a difficult time wrapping her mind around how someone could do something so terrible, and thinking about it unsettles her deeply. Compunding the issue is how easily she's affected by loss, even when it's not someone particularly close to her. Sure, she barely knew D'astel, but she misses him anyway.

GREEN PALISANTH

[picture here]

Shh. Your Palisanth is here now, OmriaMine. All will be well.

Personality
Are you sick? Are you sure? I think I heard you sniffling! You'd better lie down and have a rest, and I'll go make you some soup... Alright, so dragons can't cook, but if they could, Palisanth would make some wherry soup that would fix you up right as rain! And tuck you in while she was at it. Though she may be a green and incapable of being a 'real' mother, she'll happily mother everyone else who needs it, or who she thinks needs it. Humans, other dragons, and even firelizards can expect to find themselves on the receiving end of her attentions.

This green is more or less the ideal, cliche mother-figure - loving, concerned, protective, and at times overbearing. But when she is, it's only for your own good! You really ought to listen to her, because Palisanth always knows best (especially now that she remembers everything she knows!). Like any good mother, she has her rules, which aren't unreasonable: the most important is to mind your manners! She has no tolerance for rudeness, and certainly not any for meanness. Bullies beware, or you'll be in for a stern lecture!

A little rough-housing is fine - everyone loves a good game, even Pali - but there isn't to be any getting carried away in her house. As long as you've been a 'good kid,' she'll happily submit to attention from anyone interested in getting close to a dragon. Petting, and even a little curious prodding, is well-tolerated by this green, especially from candidates and actual children.

She isn't all seriousness, though, and indulges in frequent Flights. She prefers agreeable males, and won't let herself be caught by anyone unpleasant if she can help it. If O'ri were ever to take a weyrmate with a male dragon, Palisanth would be happy to always let him 'win' her - together, they could be a little family! This is a not-so-secret desire of hers.

Why Me?

O'ri is a good kid - bright, kind, and generally well-behaved. But, just as important, she needed someone to take care of her, both immediately and in the long run. Palisanth will console her when her feelings have been hurt, or when life isn't quite as sunny as O'ri would like it to be. The girl also had a little growing up to do, but is unlikely to ever do so entirely, meaning she'll always have need of Pali to mother her in one way or another.

Adi and Blue Mazamath - Dragonflight: An Alternative Pern

Character Name: Adine (usually just uses Adi)
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Craft/Rank: Wingrider
History:
Adine is a pretty typical weyrbrat, with the typical upbringing. Her mother was an older Candidate who, after ruining her last chance to Impress by getting pregnant, aged out and went home. Adi's been told about her, but has never met her, and doesn't know who her father is - and doesn't really care, in regards to either. The Weyrfolk are her family and friends, and she's plenty happy with that.

As a Candidate, Adi's favorite chores were anything that put her outside, or in the kitchen (mm, sweets!)...although catching tunnelsnakes was sort of fun, too. She can make just about anything fun, as long as it's not something gross. When she has free time, she spends most of it outside, swimming, picking flowers, getting dirty, and generally enjoying the outdoors. If she can, she'll find someone to drag along with her; after all, anything fun is twice as fun with company! Unless she's sleeping, or really enveloped in a particular lesson, it's rare to find her being completely still. She has things to do, discoveries to make, and people to meet!

Description:
She stands about 5'6," with hazel eyes and straight, dark brown hair cut to the middle of her back. Her complexion is on the fair side of average, but nothing exceptional. Adine is a pretty girl, decently curvy, a little heavier in the hip than in the bust.

Personality:
Happy~! Adine's cheerfulness seems to know no bounds; she has a smile for everyone, and can carry on a conversation with even the quietest of people (so what if she has to do all the talking? she can!). She starts out liking someone from the moment she meets them, and it takes quite a bit of doing to change that opinion. They have to be downright, openly mean, and even then, they'll get the benefit of the doubt and a few more opportunities. It takes several kicks for Adi to learn that a certain someone should be avoided.

Either way, an unkind word is the easiest and quickest way to wipe the smile off of Adine's face - if it's harsh enough, she'll burst into tears and run away in search of a hug. In that way, and in general demeanor, her personality can be rather childlike: carefree, naive, and innocent-seeming. She loves being happy, and thinks everyone else should be happy, too. If they're having trouble finding a reason to smile, she'll persist until she finds a way to make them smile, whether it takes a hug or something more creative. Oh, and personal space? Adi has no concept of it. She'll sidle right on up to anyone and everyone without a thought, and it never ceases to surprise her when they're less than receptive to her intrusion.

Though it's extremely rare for her to do it in a malicious way, Adine is quite the gossip. Unless someone's careful to emphasize that they're telling her something in the strictest confidence (a promise is a promise!), anything interesting can and will be repeated...and every now and then, her mouth might get ahead of her mind, causing her to slip with something that should be a secret.

Outside of talking - and playing! - Adi has an intense interest in plants. If she had ever aged out, she might have pursued Farmcraft.

Blue Mazamath

User Image

Name: Mazamath
Color: Blue
Ecosystem: Lacustrine
Personality: Mazamath is large and in charge... not. Well, he is large. He’s a cool, easy-going fellow. Very chill. It is difficult to rouse Mazamath to anger-- or, well, much of anything really. He’s quite content to be where he is, thank you very much. He’s not exactly lazy, precisely, so much as he believes in conserving his energy. Until, you know, it’s important! Convincing him that ‘now’ is important may prove to be difficult, as Mazamath has hidden reserves of strength. He can be mulishly stubborn, but when he is, he’ll present a very calm face.

If his mind is made up, it is difficult to change. Just as a river will slowly wear away at a mountain, so Mazamath believes he can influence his rider. It’s for the best, after all. Generally, though, he won’t bother. He is very zen, very calm in his approach to life. Fun is the name of the game, and if he isn’t having it, there must be something wrong in the world. He can be exceptionally playful, and is very inclined to go along with whatever mischief his rider has in mind, if the rider in question is the troublesome sort-- assuming, of course, it doesn’t involve a lot of running!

He is above such things, of course. It’s not laziness, it’s that same... conservation of energy. Don’t you look at him funny, he knows he’s being smart. Isn’t he? Who wants to get all fussed over nothing, anyway? Not Mazamath! He has a very soothing way about him, and an inherent belief in his rider’s abilities. If they need backing, he’s there. He likes to be a confidante. If he were human, he’d probably be the bartender to whom you spill your life’s troubles over a mug of something distinctly alcoholic. Lending a sympathetic ear doesn’t require much of anything from him besides listening, after all.

Why Me!?

Adine's boundless happiness attracted Mazamath to her almost immediately. She's always seeking to bring happiness into her life and makes sure to do what she enjoys - something Mazamath finds very important. After all, if you don't like doing it, why do it at all? Her persistence in cheering someone up will also compliment his tendency to be that soothing shoulder to cry on - together he an Adine can be the perfect pick-me-up pair with the blue's calming depths and the girl's cheerful disposition.

Adine loves to play and this energy will help rouse the blue into action and his own level-headed approach will help tone down and focus her bubbling enthusiasm.

Finally, Mazamath is like any other dragon in that their safety and happiness is his highest priority. Where Adine might not quite understand her attentions are not wanted, if Mazamath gets it into his head that that individual is trouble for His... well, you can bet he's going to oppose her unneccessarily bashing her head against a wall quite strongly. Some people you just can't please and you shouldn't waste you time on them.

Mazamath is Inspired By...
Lakes!

Ralla and Blue Voivoth - Dragonriders of Pern

Name: Ralla
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Wingleader

History:
Ralla is holdborn, the youngest of three daughters, and was a malcontent from childhood on. She wanted nothing to do with dresses and ribbons, and later, nothing to do with marriage and children. So when she was searched at 15, she jumped at the chance to leave her cothold behind and be a dragonrider. She Impressed her first time around, to a blue named Voivoth, and they've been testing their limits ever since. They were difficult Weyrlings, the kind who had a tendency to go just a little further than they should, to practice outside of lessons, and try things before they really should have, just to see if they could. Through a combination of luck and grit, they managed to get through it unscathed.

Ralla grew up as just another girl, and Voivoth hatched as just another blue, but just will never be good enough for either of them, and that includes just being wingriders. The surest way to get this pair to do something is to tell them it's not possible; they'll try it to prove it is, and that they can do and be whatever they want.

Appearance:
Ralla is of average height, about 5'4", with dark brown eyes and medium brown hair. Her facial features are sharp, and her figure is thin with only a hint of curves. Though she usually keeps it tied back and out of her way, her straight hair falls to mid-back when she lets it.

Personality:
Ambitious, tenacious, and dead-set on doing whatever she puts her mind to. Ralla doesn't know how to give up, and will throw herself at a task repeatedly, from whatever angle necessary, until she's accomplished it. There is not a sharding thing a man can do that Ralla cannot, and that includes being a wingleader, thank you. Her dragon may be a blue, but he's a big one, and every bit as tough as his rider - and as determined to prove that he can play with the big boys as she is. Just a girl? Just a blue? No such thing!

They'll work as hard as they have to to prove it, and work their wing just as hard, because their wing reflects on them. It's not good enough just to do well; Ralla and Voivoth won't slow down until theirs is better than bronze- and brown-led wings, because only then will they have proven themselves and their point. Even when they get there - even if they never get there - they will keep pushing.

Ultimately, work is life for Ralla, and it's rare for her to stop and relax; when she does, she's very fond of alcohol, which loosens her up a little. It even lets out her well-hidden sense of humor. But, no matter what state she's in, never make the mistake of underestimating her...or belittling, demeaning, or otherwise messing with her. Push her too far and you'll be in for a fight. She doesn't know when to back down, and is not above using her fists if she has to.

One day she may learn to balance out her toughness, but only once she's satisfied that she's achieved her goal.

BLUE VOIVOTH

[picture here]

Come with me, RallaMine. It is time for us to begin.

Personality
One might be tempted to say that Voivoth was born the wrong color, as he has enough ambition and drive for at least one bronze, if not two. That would be a bad idea, though, because he's a blue and proud of it; he is not, however, just another blue. If he had his way, there'd be no such phrase as 'just another blue,' or 'just another green.' The lower colors are vastly underappreciated, in his opinion, and he's on a mission to show everyone what he - and by extension, other blues and greens - is capable of.

He believes every dragon has potential, even if they don't realize it, and tries to encourage his fellows to find and reach theirs. They may not get the glory they deserve, but they are the bulk of the population: they are Pern's fighting force, and should be proud of it, putting in every effort to make sure their world is properly defended. He has no tolerance for laziness or complacence; anyone in a wing with him had better be giving 100%, preferably more.

This blue gives credit where credit is due, and tempers criticism with encouragement. He wouldn't ask you to do it if he didn't think you could; the best way to inspire someone to greatness is to believe in them. It would take a truly hopeless case to make him despair. Where his greatest difficulty lies is with bronze dragons and the sense of entitlement and superiority most of them seem to have. What have they done to earn it? It's not fair, and it rankles him. He likes browns a little more, as long as they don't 'side' with the metallics. He can come to accept a metallic, but only if they prove themselves to be a decent, hardworking individual who doesn't think they're better than everyone else.

Voivoth is big for a blue, practically brown-sized, and has been since hatching. He participates in Flights only when the green Rising has a male rider Ralla finds agreeable, which is to say not very often.

Why Me?
There were a lot of disappointed boys on the Sands when Voivoth hatched out of his large egg - one everyone had felt sure contained a bronze or at least a brown. Instead, they got a very big and very angry blue. How dare they be disappointed with him?! He was a perfectly good dragon, one anyone should be glad to have. He tore through the male candidates with a vengeance before setting his sights on the girls, and focused in on one as dissatisfied with people's expectations as he was - and, just as importantly, one who had no interest in Impressing a Queen. One who would never find him disappointing, or less than what they expected. Instead, he was everything Ralla could have wanted, and vice versa. Together, they could go as far as they liked.

Iafri and Green Harth - Dragonriders of Pern

Name: Iafri
Age: 17
Gender: Female

History:
The child of two prisoners, though she knows not which two, Iafri was of course raised by the guards. But she knows they're not her family by blood, leading her to worry about her ancestry and what potential she might have to be 'bad.' This has taken her in the complete opposite direction, to be retiring and non-confrontational.

Growing up, she was a tag-along to more dominant children, obeying them as if they were real authority figures, and was always just sort of there. She was largely ignored unless they wanted something from her, the type that people tend to take for granted and forget is around, who as part of the background hears and sees a lot, and that continues into the present day.

Appearance:
Her hair is dark brown, though lightened some by the sun, her skin is tanned, and her eyes are grayish-blue. Her height, at 5'4", is unremarkable in either direction, and her figure is simply average. Feminine, but nothing worth drawing successive looks. Iafri's face is pretty enough, but always marred by dark circles under her eyes, and is rarely lit by a real smile.

Personality:
Iafri is meek and submissive, the sort of person who's always looking down and away from whoever's talking to her, and has a nervous manner at all times. She's forever chewing on her fingernails, shuffling her feet, or fussing with her clothes - she just can't be still. She'll speak, mostly when spoken to, but never raises her voice. If she didn't really hear what you said, she'll pretend she did and give whatever the most appropriate non-verbal response seems to be, because she'd rather not bother you by asking you to repeat yourself. She'll only double-check if you were telling her what to do, because she can't afford to not know that and get it wrong.

She shies away from violence entirely, even rough-and-tumble play, and conflict in general. She won't argue with anyone, even in a friendly manner; she would rather agree, get it over with, and have things go back to being peaceful. Well, as much so as they get. If someone asks her to do something, she'll do it with few if any questions asked, as long as it doesn't involve confrontation or physical harm of any kind. She'll take someone else's chores, give them something of hers if they demand it, help spread a rumor, or even steal.

Iafri doesn't like being this way, but what can she do? If she were to change, she'd have to stand up for herself, be responsible, lose her 'friends,' and all sorts of other terrifying things. She chides herself for being such a doormat, but doesn't have the courage to pick herself up off the ground, leading her to be self-deprecating and constantly frustrated.

When left to herself, Iafri is kind and gentle, especially with children, or with individuals similar to herself. She'll smile, laugh, and even stop chewing her fingernails. She's a good shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic listener, and surprisingly, a keeper of secrets to those who are honestly friendly to her. Her loyalty and gratitude to those genuine few runs deep, and she will not betray them.

Harth
Mine, dear, are you really sure you should put that into your mouth?

Oh, don’t give her that face! Harth just wants what’s best for you! While she’ll never have eggs of her own, Harth is truly a mother at heart. Her rider will simply have to do! Like any good mother, she’ll just adore her rider to little itty bitty pieces! Her rider is the cutest thing she ever did see, and she has no problem telling anyone who will listen. No matter what it is her rider does, Harth wants to show them off, even if its as simple as her rider dressing nicely. Hopefully Iafri won’t get too embarrassed, that isn’t what Harth meant!

Unfortunately, even though she means well, Harth just doesn’t understand she can be a little overbearing sometimes. She insists Iafri eats well, and isn’t afraid to offer her opinion. She’ll try to introduce her rider to nice people, and as they both get older, to nice boys (or girls, if that’s what her rider really wants). Only the best for her rider! If she doesn’t approve of suitors, Faranth help them! Harth has no problem chasing off unwanted attention, even if her rider doesn’t ask her to.

She doesn’t have problems grounding her rider, either, if she’s going to be naughty.

While she’s friendly, Harth can be a little socially awkward sometimes. She spends so much time with Hers, she needs to be reminded to visit with dragons some times. It’s very hard for her to leave (what if her rider NEEDS her!?), but once she goes, she’s very social. (Unless Hers gets into trouble. Harth is coming for you, dear!) She uses annoying pet names for everyone (dear, darling, hunny), no matter how old or how much higher in rank they are. The green is social, but she’s a little oblivious to social cures, sometimes.

As far as Flights go, Harth is easily swooned by handsome, talented boys. It will manifest itself in a preference for bronzes, however, as flattered as she may be, Harth just wants what’s best for Iafri. Her rider will always have the final say in the winner of her Flights.

Don't forget your lunch!
Oh, poor Iafri! She really looks like she could use a hug! Or maybe she needs a little more to eat. Or, oh, dear...

Harth could feel how meek and submissive Hers was, and her littler heart just broke. Poor thing! She wants nothing more to make Iafri happy, and asks for very little in return. (A little love might be nice, that's all a mother ever wants, right?) She wants to steer Iafri in the right direction, help her make more friends...everything any motherly sort would want for their adopted child!

Stats

Size: Average; Harth is of average size for a green.

Resilience: Above Average; Harth is made of something tough. While her pain tolerance is average, she can really hang in there, even though it hurts!

Speed: Average; Average size makes for average speed!

Stamina: Very High; Harth's stamina is quite something for a green. Her Flights will be quite impressive, but honestly, what did you expect? Mothers must have high stamina!

Strength: Below Average; High stamina comes at a price, Harth really isn't very strong at all.

Intelligence: Average; Though not witty, there's nothing wrong with

Wit: Below Average; Sweet as she is, Harth has trouble keeping up with witty jokes. She's not particularly clever...

Please behave!
Harth is troubled by much of the antics the dragon's from her clutch choose to partake in, but doesn't seem to dislike or favor any of them. Yet.

Frustrated with the Walt Disney studio's reluctance to produce full-length animated films, Don Bluth and a number of animators left the studio in the early '80s with the intent of creating movies in the style of Disney's classics. The Secret of NIMH is the first film Bluth produced after leaving the studio. Adapted from Robert C. O'Brien's acclaimed children's book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H., the film is about a widowed mouse whose home is threatened; also, one of her children is gravely ill. On her way to find help, she discovers NIMH, a secret society of highly-intelligent rats who have escaped from a nearby science lab. The rats help the widow to protect her family and home.

Fi'o and Brown Ivanhoth - Lost Weyrs of Pern

Name: Fi'o
Age: 21
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual

Personality:
Even now, Fi'o is constantly overwhelmed by life in a Weyr. It's big, it's busy, and there are people everywhere - and they're crazy. Force is such a foreign environment, full of such foreign ideas, that it took Fi'o quite awhile to adjust. She's still in the process of adjusting, in fact! She has yet to decide one way or the other as to whether or not all these different worldviews are right or wrong, and instead observes with wide eyes, witholding judgement until she manages to process everything and make up her mind about what she thinks. She's very indecisive, you see, and if at all possible, will opt not to make a decision at all and just go with the flow of whatever whoever else is involved decides on. If there's no one else to make the decision, Fi'o will fret and fret until, if she absolutely has to, she'll pick one of the options more or less at random. Ivanhoth has been a great help with this (in an avoiding-the-problem sort of way), as she can ask him what to do.

Another part of the reason she's been so slow to adjust is that she stubbornly refuses to ever ask for help. She'll accept it if it's offered in just the right way, but she's very touchy about it. It's better not to bother offering and just do it, giving her no chance to protest. If someone asks, she'll just say no by reflex. It's compensation, in some ways, for her fragile looks; somewhere along the line, she got fed up with people assuming she needed to be coddled, and it's sent her in the opposite direction. She can do everything by herself (or with her dragon's help, as he's an exception to her rule), thank you, so mind your own business and leave her alone.

...but not totally alone, please. Fi'o needs companionship of some kind, though you'll never get her to admit it. This means she isn't likely to approach anyone, but is happy to be approached, although she isn't immediately chatty. She often appears flighty as well, because she's constantly looking around; even if she's listening intently to someone, her eyes usually wander to whatever else is going on. She's a keen observer, and she doesn't want to miss anything. This leads to a certain amount of quiet nosiness, as she tries to watch and listen to people in a discreet way. Anything she learns, however, she keeps to herself. It's purely for her own benefit and understanding, not for the sake of finding gossip to spread.

Her voice and manner are quiet and gentle, and though she doesn't like to be helped, she doesn't mind helping someone else. Keeping in mind her own feelings on the matter, however, she doesn't make a fuss of it, and just helps and moves on. She doesn't need or especially want to be thanked, and is more likely to slip away after giving her assistance than stick around wanting praise or credit. Fi'o doesn't like excessive amounts of attention or being in the spotlight at all; she'd rather observe than be observed. She has an excellent memory for names and faces, and recalls the people - and animals, from runnerbeasts to flits to dragons - she's met with ease.

History:
Up until she was Searched, Fi'o had never left the Cothold she was born in. The third child in a string of six (five of them daughters), she had no great aspirations in life. She figured on a very normal one, as a matter of fact - get married, have kids, and be happy with it. When a dragonrider came calling, though, that all changed. Maybe she could be more. Maybe she could ride a dragon!

She Impressed Ivanhoth six turns ago, at the age of 15.

Appearance:
Petite. Fi'o is thin, with no curves worth speaking of. She's dainty, almost to the point of looking fragile, though she's toughened up some since coming to the Weyr. Her face is plain, if a little sharp, and she has wide-set brown eyes and mousey brown hair. Her complexion is average for Pern.

Hello, FinoraMine! Can your Ivanhoth have a hug, please?

Name: Ivanhoth
Color: Brown

Personality:
Like rider, like dragon, they say. Just like Fi'o, Ivanhoth is very visually oriented when it comes to interactions of any sort. The small brown has a habit of wanting to know what is going on, especially when it comes to dramatics. Loud noises especially cause him to enter on a scene, though he is very careful to be very polite. Rather than bursting in and attempting to take control of a situation, the brown instead asks if help is needed. If he is refused, he will turn away. This unfortunately means that he has a poor time being friends with humans and dragons who tell him to go away when they really want his attention. In fact, Ivanhoth usually takes exactly what people tell him to do to heart, no matter what their outward appearance suggests. (While that green may sound like she's crying, she has said she is perfectly happy, so there's nothing to do here!).

For this reason, Ivanhoth tends to have the easiest time with people that tell him exactly what they honestly feel. He is very inclined to want to please people, and if they request help of him, or need someone to talk to, Ivanhoth is there all the way. He's the type of dragon you can really count on to listen and not talk if you need it, and he has a tendency to look on the positive side of life. He seems to believe that there is always a silver lining, and will discover it and tell it to you. It is, in some ways, almost an intellectual challenge for the brown.

As a Wing dragon, Ivanhoth is very easy-going due to his ability to take what is told to him exactly. If there is no given answer to a situation, Ivanhoth takes a great deal of faith from what his Wingriders have told him in the past, and he is not afraid of asking something he is not unsure of. There is very little shame in this dragon's heart. He is not afraid of sounding stupid, or making a mistake. Ivanhoth is very into the belief that you cannot discover the right way to do something unless you have discovered the wrong way as well, and he holds Fi'o to this quite often when she is not sure what to do. He is more than willing to suggest a solution to something she is confused on and help her make her choices. These, unfortunately, may not always be the best ones, as Ivanhoth relies on the words others have told him in the past and lacks a strong logical sense of his own.

This does not hinder his social interactions, and Ivanhoth is very social if only because, like Fi'o, he craves the attention of others. Ivanhoth is a very physical dragon, whether there is a sexual component or not. He wants to stand close to his friends, and he wants to be near his rider at almost all times. The few times that Ivanhoth panics is when His is not there with him, though he tries to pretend there is nothing wrong. Since a Hatchling, he has gotten better, but he still cannot be apart from Fi'o for much longer than a few hours.

Ivanhoth will mostly chase greens as his smaller size will likely prevent him from chasing any golds. However, given some training and stamina building, there is the potential. Those females he catches are bound to get a nice taste of his affections, and Ivanhoth is a bit of a "cuddler" after flights. He lingers around for quite some time afterwards, talking it up with both the rider and the dragon he's with, and dotes on the dragon he has caught with nuzzles and tends to snuggle up to them.

Wherhandler ? and Gold ? - Dragonriders of Pern
Possible profile - never got it written up/approved originally, so this is just musing that I'm actually pretty 'meh' about. Will probably scrap.

Name: Kaia
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
At what age did they bond?

History:
Born to a wherhandler and a Lower Caverns worker, Kaia was fascinated by her father's wher from the time she was small, and there was never any question in her mind that she would have one herself, one day. She was 15 when she received her first partner, an exceptionally temperamental brown named Kask. They became Hold guardians together, and six turns into their service, participated in a hunting party when a group of wild whers came too close to the hold. Kask was mortally wounded in the fight, and after his death, Kaia hesitated about taking another partner. Though she'd loved Kask dearly, he'd been a serious handful for such a young handler despite their blood-bond, and she worried that even with her experience since then, the experience might repeat itself.

Two turns later, her choice was made for her when her father became grievously ill, and asked her to bond to and take care of his wher. Kaia couldn't say no to her beloved parent, or to the gold who'd inspired her initial love for whers. Devosk became Kaisk, and the pair mourned and eventually thrived together.
Appearance: Kaia doesn't look like a rough-and-tough wherhandler, being a soft-featured and petite brand of pretty. She has light brown eyes and medium-length dark brown hair she keeps pulled back in a braid.
Personality:
As laidback as they come, Kaia has an easy confidence that allows her to adapt well, to get on without being overly dependent on others. There are rare occasions when she can become more deeply attached, most likely with lovers, but she's hardly the type to pine for companionship. She likes to have fun, to laugh and have a drink, and prefers to keep company with similar individuals when she socializes. She doesn't waste time on more negative individuals - why spend her precious free time on people like that?

The responsibility inherent in being bonded to first a highly aggressive wher, and now to a gold wher, was difficult to take at first (for different reasons), and still can be at times. Her relaxed nature makes her a poor first choice for a leadership role, but she does feel she has more freedom with Kaisk than she did with Kask, as the gold is much easier to be handler to.

Wher Name: Kaisk
Wher Image:
User Image
Wher Personality:
Kaisk is relatively agreeable as whers go, in that she obeys her handler with little fuss, making her easy to control. So long as her human is with her, she poses almost no real threat to others - although she could easily convince you otherwise! Kaisk puts on a good show, with aggressive posturing and threatening noises, but would only attack if given leave by Kaia, or if someone were stupid enough to ignore her displays.

It takes many meetings or a blooding for the gold to accept the close proximity of new humans, and she only tolerates nearness from other whers during a Run; otherwise, she requires a significant radius to be comfortable. Once she has been blooded to another person for familiarity, she not only accepts their presence, but can become somewhat affectionate. Most of her affection, of course, is reserved for Kaia, to whom she is obsessively devoted.

Wherhandler Cataran and Blue Catarsk - Dragonflight: An Alternative Pern

User Image

Character Name: Cataran
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Craft/Rank: Wherhandler
History:
As the daughter of two wherhandlers (her mother has a brown, and her father a green), it was more or less inevitable that Cataran would become one as well. Though she spent a few turns as a Candidate, she came to realize that she didn't really want to be a dragonrider, even if they are better-appreciated and altogether more heroic-seeming. She had a much better chance of getting a wher than she did of Impressing a dragon, so she grew out of the fantasy and pursued her parents' craft.

Cataran has been bonded to her guard wher, Catarsk, for eight turns now, and they are blood-bonded.

Description:
In excellent shape, but that does not translate to thin. She's a little on the heavy side, being very solidly built and pleasantly curvy, but deceptively strong. She'd be very easy to outrun, however. 5'2," with blue eyes and wavy dark brown hair.

Personality:
In regards to personality, Cataran is every bit as solid as she looks. She's a dependable, no-nonsense person with a low tolerance for stupidity, bravado, or anyone who thinks too highly of themselves. They need to settle down, shut up, and do their job, and she has no problem telling someone so if she thinks they're out of line. Her tolerance is slightly higher outside of work, however, and she's perfectly happy to loosen up and have a little fun herself, but in moderation. There's no fun in making a fool of yourself, after all!

As long as you're not pushing her buttons, she's a very pleasant person to be around - even motherly at times, as her innate sense of responsiblity translates naturally into taking care of people. She's quick to notice if something's amiss, and just as quick to ask what that something is. Cataran is nosy, and doesn't think twice before intruding on someone else's business. They don't have to answer her if they don't want to (although it might take a few tries for her to give up), but she is certainly going to ask. She tends to be especially curious about relationships, perhaps because she secretly wishes to find one herself, being a hopeless romantic at heart.

Wher Name: Catarsk
Wher Color: Blue
Wher Personality:
Catarsk is relatively docile and tolerant of humans other than his handler once introduced, but not of total strangers. He's quite wary of anyone he hasn't met before, but can generally come to accept them if given time, space, and Cataran's approval. Of course, he wouldn't take it well if someone were to threaten her, and he will become defensive if someone upsets her, putting himself between Cataran and the offending individual. He works well with other whers of any color, although he prefers they not get too close to his handler - she's his, and all her attention belongs to him, thank you. While he doesn't become outright aggressive, he will muscle them out of the way if necessary. This can also apply to people, if Catarsk is feeling particularly jealous.

Wherhandler Dinah and Green Dinahsk - Dragonflight: An Alternative Pern

User Image

Name: Dinah
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft/Rank: Wherhandler/Apprentice

History:
Dinah is a Benden-born Weyrbrat, daughter of a green wherhandler and a mystery father she really doesn't care about. Actually, she doesn't care about her mother that much either, because in her humble opinion, the woman is a few glows short of a basket. Intelligence notwithstanding, though, she did get one thing right when she chose wherhandling, so Dinah does have some modicum of respect for her. Dinah never wanted to be a dragonrider; the boys get the good colors, with the exception of gold, and there aren't enough of those to risk Standing for and getting picked by one of the little colors. And besides, dragons and riders are a little too co-dependent for her tastes; at least if a wher or wherhandler dies, the other half of the pair can move on.

Recognizing whers as vastly superior for their toughness and and just being all-around better, Dinah pursued wherhandling eagerly, and has been diligent in all her training. She will get a wher, and it will be the best damn watch-wher anyone ever saw.

Description: Stands 5'6", of mostly average build, but a little on the muscular side of the spectrum - Dinah takes fitness very seriously. Her hair is straight and light brown, and she keeps it cut to her shoulders. Brown eyes.

Personality:
Dinah is, first and foremost, tough. Her capability for endurance, both physical and mental, is high. She can deal with just about anything you throw at her, and she's proud of it. She's proud of that image, too, and cultivates and maintains her tough persona very carefully. If she gets sick or hurt, she'll do her best to hide it, and if she can't, she'll at least play it off as not being a big deal. She has no tolerance for weakness - or the appearance thereof - in herself, and the same goes for the rest of the world. She despises weaklings and whiners who can't pull their own weight, and she won't hesitate to let them know. This makes her into something of a bully, who pushes others around (verbally or physically, depending on the situation) in an attempt to toughen them up...or, failing that, to at least get them out of her sight. Accordingly, her temper is incredibly short, and it doesn't take much to provoke her into an argument or a fight. Early on it tended to get her into trouble, but by this point, most people who know her know to stay out of her way, so serious episodes have become fewer and farther between.

If Dinah likes you, though, she really likes you. She respects 'her' kind of people: capable, dependable ones who don't shy away from work or life. Even moreso than physical strength, what she really appreciates is intelligence. If someone is up to her standards, she wants them to be her friend, to the point where she might even try to badger them into it - the best need to stick together, after all. Even among friends, she can be pushy, whether it's with advice or just with what they should do tonight. Her sense of humor, unsurprisingly, can be abrasive and occasionally mean, although she doesn't really mean it when it comes to her friends...not that she has all that many.
