"Gah...Why is it that whenever I decide to take a nap, Nyx just leaves me lying in the grass?" a soft voice echoed in the darkness. Its owner was a short young woman who had just sat up, and was rubbing her eyes quietly. She could smell that it was about an hour before dawn, could hear faintly nearby animals scurrying around in the underbrush for some last minute feeding. At least Seru's pack was untouched. She'd been using it as a pillow, after all. With a last sigh, Seru stood up slowly, and then scooped up her pack, adjusted her wraparound shirt and tightened the sash, and picked up her staff, feeling around. Nyx would return...Eventually. Maybe. Being her Chosen was hard, especially for a blind girl, when Nyx was so inclined to being alone.

A mare with a dark blue coat that borders on black yawned sleepily as she woke from an uneasy night's rest. For reasons unknown, nightmares plagued her slumber and eventually forced her to wakefulness. With little to do at this hour of the morning, she wandered around aimlessly.
There was a dark shape up ahead some distance, which she assumed to be a good sized rock. Playfully, she challenged herself to jump it in an attempt to add some form of amusement to this otherwise boring wait for the sun to rise. She backed up a bit to give herself some more room before doing a light trot for a running start to the jump. Suddenly, the lump shifted and started to speak! Mira stopped herself and kept as quiet as she could.
A human! She thought as she listened to the female ask the question. The mare wondered for a second if it was directed at her for she didn't notice much else around that are capable of conversation. Well, standing here and thinking about it isn't going to get much done... She concluded, and she stepped closer to this human.
"Um...was that directed at me...?" Mira lowered her head to get to eye-level with this small creature. "You're a human, right?"

Startled by the sudden noise and the voice so close to her, Seru whirled around gracefully, and stopped facing the direction she thought the voice had come from. She wasn't quite facing the mare; she was looking somewhere three feet to her left. "Oh, hello! Um...No, more towards my companion...who often leaves me alone if I get tired and she's not... And yes, I'm a human. What else could I be?" she chuckled, leaning against her staff quietly.

Mira backed away a step when Seru turned to face...the bush to her left...? She wondered if that was a human custom to look to the side of others when speaking. Seeing that the girl settled down from the initial surprise, Mira moved in closer again with her face directly in front of Seru's. "I've never seen a human before," she said as she sniffed at Seru's hair.

"O-oh..." Seru blushed, giggling slightly when the mare's breath tickled her. She smelled of hay, apples, and lilacs, from her pack. "Oh! You're an Azrien...What's your name?" she asked, reaching out tentatively to stroke the mare's neck gently. It took her a minute to find her and start stroking, her eyes closing. "My name's Seru." she added, and then smiled. She stepped back, taking off her pack. "Do you like apples? Nyx does..."

Having not felt the comforting touch of another on her since leaving the woods, Mira happily let the girl pet her neck. She never knew humans can be such affectionate creatures, and this was a happy surprise from the tales of slavery that her parents told. "Mmhm, I am an Azrein, and my name is Mira," she replied. "Pleasure to meet you, Seru."
The mare had some difficulties containing her excitement at the mention of apples, and it took self-restraint not to snatch the pack away. "Yes please! I would love to have an apple." She flicked her tail in anticipation of the tasty treat. "Is Nyx your companion?"

"Nice to meet you, too, Miss Mira..." Seru grinned, drawing out an apple, and offering it to her. "Do you have a Chosen? Or have you not found somebody who you love enough to Choose?" she asked softly, curious. "Nyx Chose me. But...She prefers to be alone most of the time. And me, being blind...It's hard for me to find her when she decides to do so. But, that's alright, though. I wander around and she finds me eventually.

Mira neighed in excitement when she saw the apple and immediately chomped down on it, taking out half of the fruit in one bite. As she chewed, she started to shake her head no to the question before she remembed that Seru couldn't see. That explains the whole not-facing-me thing, she thought. She tooke the remaining half of the apple in her mouth, careful not to take off a piece of the girl's hand. "Nope," Mira replied as she ate. "I haven't chosen anybody. You're the first human I've ever seen."
The Azrein thought about whether it was inappropriate behavior to lick someone she only just met, but what the heck. It has apple juice on it. As she lapped at the sweet juice that dripped onto Seru's hand, Mira commented, "That is a little inconvenient. I haven't noticed another Azrein when I was wandering about."

"You really love apples, don't you?" Seru laughed, and let her lick her hand before getting another one. "So does Nyx, but she tries to hide it more...And I guess she went a different way..." She chuckled slightly, remembering the first apple she gave Nyx. She'd been unable to bite down on it, and it'd been stuck in her mouth, and she and Seru had had to find somebody to pull it out. She giggled at that, and then smiled. "The first time she got an apple, her teeth weren't developed enough for her to chew properly, and it got stuck. Took us an hour to find somebody to get it out..."

"That must be quite the spectacle!" Mira commented as she chuckled at the mental image of a young filly with an apple stuck to its teeth. She thought back to her first apple and how her mother had broken up the fruit into smaller pieces. Unexpectedly, a small tinge of nostalgia and regret seeped into her mind as she thought about how worried her parents must be. They'll be fine. They get along perfectly without me, she thought as she shook her head to clear it of those unpleasant feelings, causing her long flowing mane to ripple. "Well, since you and Nyx are...um...what's that word?" the mare paused to think of the term Azreins used for when they had Chosen a human. "...bonded...I think. Anyway, I'm sure she'll find her way back to you."

"I wish I could have seen it myself! The sounds alone were hilarious, though..." Seru chuckled slightly, and then smiled at Mira. "Yeah, we're Bonded. And she always found me before...She checks in every once in a while, and stays around when she feels like it..." Seru paused a moment, and then tilted her head slightly. "Would you like to travel with me a little while? I can always use somebody who can actually see for me..." she suggested, grinning, and holding out the second apple.

Mira hesitated. It wasn't long ago when she had ran away from one set of baggage that limited her freedom, and she'd hate to pick up a new one so soon. But she has apples... With a light toss of her head that seem to resemble a shrug, she snatched the treat from Seru's hand and said while chewing, "Shure, zhat shounz fun."
"Mmmmm!" A mere minute later, Mira was licking her lips clean of the apple juice and cheerfully asked, "So where are you headed?"

"That's the great part! I have no idea! I just wander around, hoping to run into new people...Maybe go find out if Nyx and I can aide the king. I've heard that he's been having difficulties with other Azriens that are...less than friendly.." Seru smiles, and then rubbed on Mira's snout gently, and then turned away. "Which direction did you come from? We won't go that way..."

"Sounds like what I'm doing," Mira replied cheerfully. "I came from the woods in the north. I want to explore this Isle, so going any other direction is fine." She thought about what Seru said about helping the King. The mare was curious about the famed stables that she heard so much about, and she imagined them to be grand and beautiful. Yet, she feared that she would be tied down to yet another obligation. Meh, I'll worry about that when the time comes.

"Hehe...Alright...Ooo, sun's coming up. Is it beautiful?" Seru asked, reaching out and putting a hand on Mira's shoulder gently. "Mind if I put my hand on your shoulder? So I don't suddenly lose track of you, you know?"
