The stars that hung overhead were always a sad, distant reminder of all the things she had given up for the Negaverse. They stretched out in every direction, as far as the eye could see, and glimmered above her head like a million taunting, tiny dancers.
It had been a long time since she had stopped to mourn all the things that could have been, not since she had jumped head first into her duties. She was always busy, being something to someone, supporting someone else, and that left no time to think about herself. When the nights were slow and company was sparse though, she found herself drifting back to the 'whats ifs' and 'maybes' that had plagued her months before.
So she had slipped away again, leaving GUARD to the members on hand, and run through the city until she found what she was looking for: The planetarium. It was the last time she remembered having fun, that feeling that was impossible to define and even rarer to find for her. She had laughed and smiled in Khal's arms as she watched a star show, held down and happy on Earth even while she watched a story of the things beyond her.
But the star show didn't play at night and Khal was busy, being the leader she had never expected. While he walked into the darkness of the Rift, she sat beneath the darkness of the night sky.
Around her auras moved, shifted, and ran through the city without her even batting an eyelash. They could be Nemesis, or Alunite, or Fluorite - any number of people she should be fighting or supporting. She was perched on the dome of the planetarium with her knees drawn to her chest and her arms wrapped around them for support. Her pale face stared up into the glittering darkness, picking out constellations and stars that were familiar to her for the people she knew.
Then her eyes shifted and glanced in the direction of a star she would never know: her own.

At the edge of Alkaid's awareness, another aura blipped into existence. This one was a bit different, and notably so: it wasn't a senshi. It definitely wasn't a fellow Negaverse agent. It didn't have that kind of subtle vibe to it that those new enemies, the Knights, had either. Strangely enough, the new presence had some quality to it that felt like it should have been familiar to the corrupted senshi, but it wasn't. Something the sky above was missing.
Something her own star was missing.
The sky was clear tonight, which put Kurma in a relaxed, complacent mood. Clouds were lovely, sure -- and he could never get enough of rain -- but it was always nice to be able to lie back and contemplate the stars from the comfort of a rooftop or a park bench, and enjoy the smell and sensation of a summer night's breeze at the same time. It was the best of both worlds. Or, at least, it was in the way he defined those things.
He had settled down on the grass a block or so away from Alkaid, folding his arms behind the back of his head and watching the moon slowly crawl across the sky above him. It was something he'd seen in a lot of movies Allie liked. They always seemed to enjoy it, so he wanted to give it a try.

It was a few moments before the small blip of energy caught Alkaid's attention. Her mind receded from her daydreams, slowly but surely, as that aura danced on the edge of her consciousness and tried to tell her that someone very interesting was far too close to her.
All at once a frown spread across her lips and she blinked, crashing back into awareness. It took only seconds before she felt Kurma's energy weighing down on her and she immediately rolled forward onto her knees and scooted across the domed roof she was perched on. When she saw him simply lying there in the grass, she was even more confused. He would really just do that, so unguarded?
She pushed herself to her knees and slid from the dome onto the flat roof, then jumped down into the grass below. She crouched only a moment before she was standing again and walking across the thick, green turf. If she could feel him so strongly, she was sure he was more than powerful enough to feel her. It surprised her when she was able to walk right up to him, standing behind him as he stared up at the stars from the ground.
"What are you?" He had to know she was there, she was sure, and introductions were pointless.

He would, and indeed he was. Where others in his place might have gotten up to take a defensive stance (or perhaps dash off to take cover), Kurma remained lackadaisically there in the grass as the unusual dark presence made herself known -- first by her energy, and second by her delicate footsteps trotting to close the distance between them. Alkaid would be met with a pair of unusually pale grayish-beige eyes, looking at her upside down from his vantage point on the ground as she stood over him from behind his head, announcing her presence with a question instead of a greeting.
In response to those three words, he offered a curious smile. "Aren't you supposed to say who?" he asked. It was hard to tell if he was being playful or serious. "I'm also pretty sure the folks on this planet like it more when you give your own name before asking for theirs. Don't bother me much, though."
Alkaid's forehead was taking up half of his field of vision. In order to correct this problem, he drew up his knees to scoot himself a foot or two downward.
"You can call me Kurma. Whatever else you can come up with works just fine, too." Now his hands were folded over his chest instead, so he could crane his neck back further and still look at Alkaid if he wanted. "Usually I travel between different planets, stopping at places in need of guidance. Things have changed a bit since the last time I was around, though." He flashed another lopsided smirk, then lifted his right hand in a gesture towards the grass nearby. There was plenty of room to lie down, or at least sit.
"Anyway, none of that's all too interesting, and it's too nice tonight to waste it on stories. Better to kick back and enjoy the view."
A pause. And a small frown.
"...can you enjoy the view, that way? It must be pretty quiet for you."

Alkaid's brows lifted just slightly as the man on the grass scooted to get a better view of her, instead of standing up to look her in the eyes. Now she didn't really feel so bad about that 'skipping the introduction' thing, even if she did offer him a brief introduction after.
"I'm Alkaid." She didn't offer her sphere though, or her rank, or anything else to identify her. She wasn't sure what he was, and she didn't want to share her own nature if she hadn't quite figured that out yet.
She stared long and hard at the patch of grass he offered her, thinking over what he had said and bits and pieces of a memory of Nemesis. He traveled in space. Space man.
"You're the man that taught Nemesis so space travel." It was said matter-of-factly, but it was enough to make her finally walk forward and sit down (if a bit nervously) in the grass at his side. She drew her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them, much like before, though now it was to keep herself tucked into as small of a space as possible.
"Quiet?" Her brows drew down at his choice of words, then her eyes simply swept up to look at the sky. She had never learned the rules of Senshi and their stars.

"Alkaid."
The name was repeated slowly, deliberately, as if it were a word he had momentarily forgotten the meaning to. As he considered it, it seemed that it was enough of a reason regard the senshi from a more respectful pose: with the same sort of slowness he brought himself upward to a sitting position, crossing his legs and perching his hands on his knees. This meant he had his back to her. If she'd bothered to get up and walk around to look at him, though, she'd see him wearing the expression of a man losing himself in thought. "Alkaid..." he repeated, again.
"Guidance."
Then, he turned around. His gaze met hers again; he was wearing yet another smile. However, this time it was a little worn around the edges... a little forced. "You've grown a bit," he observed. "Just not in the way I'd expected. Are you lost?"

She frowned at him as he guessed her sphere. No, that wasn't a guess, he said it with far too much confidence. That meant that he either had some otherwordly ability to read minds or he knew something that she simply did not.
Neither of those options were particularly comforting.
"I have absolutely no idea what you mean." She shook her head slowly, sending her dreads swaying softly. They coiled on the ground from her sitting position and spilled out around her awkwardly. One hand shifted from her knees and pushed a few of them back, over her shoulder.
"I know where I am, but I do not know who you are Kurma, or anything about you." She sighed and glanced up at the stars, frustrated as she hit yet another wall of her memory - even she couldn't have predicted how far back this one went, though. "I suppose it all depends on what you mean by that."

"I already told you all there really is to know about me," Kurma replied with frank sincerity. He was leaning towards her now, with a forearm over his knee. The left side of his face had a small sheet of dark hair draping next to it that threatened to cover it up, but never quite got there. "So, you know plenty, really. More than I think you're able to recall about yourself."
The orb he had tethered to his sash, looking something like a glowing glass buoy, was sitting in a patch of weeds and clover next to him. He tugged on the thin rope tied around it and somewhat clumsily caught it in his hands, then set it on his lap. It cast enough light to illuminate his features in a buttery gold, almost as if he were holding a miniature star.
"You know you're on Earth, but what do you know of where you would be otherwise?" The half-smile had faded to a quarter-smile as he peered at the senshi, with her gaze fixed frustrated on the sky. "Is there any meaning left to what you're seeing right now?"

She sighed at him, frustrated with the circles he was speaking with his words. Frustrated, but not angry.
"You sound like you know more about me than I do, space man." She dropped her gaze from the stars to look at him, and the sudden light that had been invading her vision from the corner of her eyes. She glanced down at the orb in his hands and pursed her lips, trying to decide what it could possibly be. That, and if it might have any benefit for the Negaverse - not that she thought she could steal it. She finally looked away and at his face where it glowed in the soft light.
"No, I never went home before.." she paused and waved a hand at herself, then looked away from him again. She didn't want to see that all-knowing face anymore, suddenly. "There is no meaning to anything, just a deep sense of loss. Perhaps jealousy, too, that the Moon Kingdom senshi can go home and anger that none of them appreciate what that means."

Kurma was quiet for a moment, contemplating both her words and his thoughts about them. He was never very quick to speak or act, but in some moments he could be a bit slower than others. In regarding a senshi who had gone the way Sailor Alkaid had, this was one of those moments.
"So you know it's a home to you," he mused, "or at the very least, it's supposed to be." He let his eyes close and he tilted his chin upward a bit, taking in a full breath of humid air as a breeze passed by. "But the path's been lost to you, hasn't it? You've lost the ability to see it, I imagine..."
Another pause. Kurma had a thoughtful look on his face, that developed a tinge of kindness when he brought his gaze to Sailor Alkaid again.
"This doesn't make it hopeless, though." Now he was slowly standing up, tucking the orb under one arm. The other reached outward, extending to Alkaid.
"After all... sometimes even the guides need guidance."

"Yes," it was one solemn word, shamed and sad all at once. The careful, calm mask she wore in the presence of strangers faltered and her longing became evident in her eyes. There were not many things she regretted or mourned for anymore but her home would always be one. She still had a small hope, the tiniest of glimmers, that the Negaverse would give that to her one day.
But maybe they didn't have to.
Her eyes trailed up to him as he stood and tucked the ball under one hand, then fell to the one that he extended to her. She simply stared at it for a long moment, confused by the gesture. She was, by nature, an outcast. Others never helped her or thought about her feelings, it was just the way of life. Yet here he was, offering her the one thing she had ever wished for in her new life, without any hesitance.
The flame of her hope grew and soared, shining in her bright eyes and burning away the sadness of moments before. She opened her mouth to say something, perhaps to thank him, but in the end her voice faltered and her eyes said all that needed to be spoken.
She simply lifted her hand and slid it into his. Her eyes never faltered or moved from his, even as she was pulled to her feet.

No more words were necessary, so in response to Alkaid's faltering silence Kurma did not offer any more. He simply gave her a smile -- this time, it was the kind one might give to an old friend -- and gently helped her to her feet, before fixing his gaze on the sky. Her star wasn't all that far away. It could even be seen from here, and quite easily. The moment Alkaid was fully standing, the two had been bathed in a bright shaft of warm golden light, before disappearing from the surface of the Earth entirely. It was no longer the time to simply sit and stargaze. Now was the time to walk among them, and regain what was lost. ((CONTINUED HERE))
