Deep within the earth, after the fires of war burned away the flesh of humans leaving the metallic hulls of machines, the robotic community have set out to find out what caused the humans to break the bonds of friendship and forge weapons of war. Only one human remains now for them to test, unable to dissect him for answers they test him every day, over and over with different tools and situations. Mazes and challenges set up in an ever changing facility all for the A.I.s to understand the human race. Jack Harper was found as a baby when his mother handed his blanket wrapped sleeping form to a robot to save him from the nuclear fallout of reactors and bombs exploding. They took him down into their underground facility and raised him. Taught him how to speak, read, write; they gave him a college level education in mostly logical information, literature and poems were left out but due to there extensive database and logic panels Jack was able to start to read in his own free time while not being tested. He read about the stars, the oceans, the clouds, and he also read of other people. Wondering if he was the last human he began to question about the surface and asking to visit it. What will the A.I.s say... How will he escape if they say no?

The slightly musical and feminine voice of the main AI wafted in from outside Jack's decent sized room in which he stayed.
Wake up Jack. It is time to start today's tests.

Jack was asleep with a logic panel resting on his chest from when he fell asleep reading the night before. As the lights came on he slowly opened his eyes and then rubbed them. He got up and laid the panel on his desk before walking to the sonic shower and stepping in. His clothing vanished along with any impurities and excess oils on his skin. As it finished his Nano tech suit formed on him. He stepped out and looked at the camera in the room."...I want to ask you something... I have been reading a lot lately about the surface... Could I see it? Maybe there are other humans out there."

The unit in question was a white mechanical being which hung from the ceiling on rails, and the main feature was a large white orb which had a orange optical center which shifted around in a fashion very similar to an eye. It blinked at him, and it sounded like a camera shutter.
The surface... we have had no contact with the surface in very many years. There was the sound of another shutter blink. The last thing we heard of them was when the facility trembled. The AI turned away slightly, it's eyes shifting to look around as it pondered this request of Jack's.

Jack watched it for a moment."...How about I do a test while you process it?"He said trying to appease the unit into a 'yes' answer.

A test then, yes.
There was another shuttle blink as the unit turned with a well oil whirr, and rolled down the hall, leading Jack to the first test of the day.

Jack followed and as he did he went on about human traditions and literary works."The way they explain it all... It sounds amazing..."he smiled."I really wanna see it for myself."

We shall see. Was the AI's response.
Soon they had entered a large room, and a few feet before the door was a plain rectangular white pedestal. It stood to a little higher then waist height; on it sat an odd contraption; it looks like a large white ovoid had been bisected diagonally in half. From it extended a cylinder which was half glass in which a glowing sky blue light could be seen. The cylinder looked to be the barrel of some type of gun. Three arms extended from around the barrel to encircle the muzzle of it; and two wires snaked up from the ovoid to the gun barrel. ((Essentially, it looked like this.))
Do you know what this is, Jack? The AI slid down her orange eye next to Jack, and blinked at it before shifting her ocular to look at him.
The room ahead was very large. halfway across was a huge glass wall that created a barrier from this location to the door on the other side. It cam up to about 2/3ds the room's total height.

Jack looked at it and then at the robot and shook his head."Is it a gun? Do i just need to shoot the glass?"

The robotic eye shook itself in a human-like gesture of 'no'. She blinked at him with the sound of a shutter.
It is a handled portal device. Pick it up and fire it then fire at another surface, and you will get two portals linking eachother.
The robot gestured to the device.
Go ahead. Try it-- try to get on the other side of the wall with the device.
