The bag at Jude's feet was battered but stylish: messenger style faux leather that had likely, at one time, passed for the real thing. By the time he'd picked it up at a second hand store, however, it had gone past its golden years, had been abandoned scuffed and faded for eager fingers to snatch up. He'd done his best, however, to give it a second renaissance: the beaten-up exterior, he thought, gave it a well-loved and sophisticated feel to it, like an aging professor. He hadn't touched that. Instead, he'd replaced the strap with brown-and-green argyle, had lined the interion with tidy, matching material, and a blue handkerchief stuck out of one pocket to brighten it up.

Jude was experienced in taking something second-rate and dressing it up as something more.

He was out of his apron at the moment, settled in a quiet corner of the mostly-empty cafe with his jacket draped over the back of his chair and his tie -- daringly green -- loosened just a touch to make it easier to work. His laptop was just as scuffed as his bag, but of considerably lower quality. A jaunty tophat sticker placed at an angle over the light-up logo on its back did nothing to improve speed or performance, unfortunately.

He ground his teeth as all of his open internet tabs ground to a halt, slumping back and scowling at the piece of crap machine. The expression had more comedy than rage. He was too adorable to properly pull it off.

"I need a new computer." A grumble, low, mostly under his breath, it was intended for no one but himself.

Ian's own laptop was in his messenger bag, which he held carefully by the handle in both hands in spite of the strap over his shoulder as he wove his way between tables. The coffee shop was not quite cramped (more like "cosy"), but it meant that there was not always nearly enough space for a person and a laptop to fit between furniture, especially if chairs had people seated in them. He had caught it on the corner of a table once before once before, and his shoulder had complained. Annoying, how it still hurt, but the red-haired boy could only do so much.

Coffee was his first answer, in general.

One of the usual employees was set up at the table next to his usual one, and Ian smiled as he edged past. Even without the name tag, Ian recognized Jude.

"Hey, sorry, just squeezing through here," he said as the already-skinny boy made himself as small as possible to edge by. Then, a sympathetic smile. "Is it doing updates again?" he asked, taking a quick glance at the screen. "Mine just did like ten of them yesterday, and then when I went to turn it off to come here, it was asking me to install three more." Ian was curious what was wrong, but also felt like it would be rude to stare at the monitor. On one hand, they were all in a public place, but then it always unnerved Ian when people watched his monitor, so he tried not to do it to others.

"No, it's just a piece of...." It came with a huffing sigh, Jude's eyes flicking up onto Ian as he squeezed by -- and he seemed to click back into place, mouth working and hunting for better words. Something that would fit well with the immaculate suit, the perfect double-windsor in his tie...

"I need to buy a new laptop, I mean. I think. This one's out of date." It wasn't entirely a lie, either: it was just that there was no chance in hell Jude would ever be able to afford a new laptop. Maybe in a year or two, if he saved up all his earnings, if he gave up all the other little hobbies. If he only ate peanut butter and jelly. He made a face at the thought, pushing at the touchpad as if tap-tap-tapping would make things kick back into gear.

"Not enough, uh. Power." He shrugged, looking back up at Xian and forcing himself to come back into focus. "You're a little later than usual? I'm usually behind the counter..."

Ian nodded slowly, setting his bag down on top of the cushioned stool at the next table to pull out his own laptop. A piece of black-and-white checkered contact paper adorned the top, but the white at the edges showed a bit of dirt, and it was peeling in places. But it made a nice decoration, or so he thought. His own machine was hardly the latest thing, nor did it look to have been the most amazing model when new, but it still served its purpose. Most of the time.

"They're out of date in like, six months, though," the red-haired boy replied with a slight laugh. "But yeah, I know what you mean. I'm sort of secretly hoping for a new one when I graduate Meadowview, but we'll see."

He flipped his laptop open and pushed the power button, then crawled momentarily under the table to plug his machine in. When he resurfaced, the boy looked back to Jude. "Huh?" After he fixed his glasses, Ian realized what the half-heard statement had been, and replied, "Oh, yeah, bus got stuck in traffic." He shrugged. "Looked like just a parked car with a bad dent and claw marks or something in it. I don't think anyone was hurt, but everyone was stopping to gawk at it."

His machine was still dragging, Jude sitting back with arms folded over his chest in frustration. It was better than slamming fingers against the mouse, click-click-clicking as if that'd fix something, but it wasn't much better -- not when he was so small and young, and the posture just made him look like a pouting kid. Petulant. Sulky.

On the screen, his cursor whirled, refusing to respond or react. Behind it, the Reddit home screen offered up a page of links that Jude could not click. At least he hadn't been doing work...

After a moment, his eyes flashed onto Ian, mouth still set into that not-quite-a-pout, trying to process that. "...claw marks?"
PostPosted: Fri Jul 22, 2011 1:47 pm

Ian immediately laughed at himself, knitting his fingers together. "It was like, three big long scrapes in the paint. It looked like maybe when you scrape against a concrete pillar in a garage or something, but the lines were vertical. Like," he trailed off, and pantomimed a clawing motion with one hand. It was sort of awkward to bring it up, still, but by the same token, weird things had become nearly the norm in Destiny City.

The usually-shy boy was never quite sure whether or not he should be properly embarrassed to bring up conspiracy theories or mention of monsters, since it really was entirely possible.

He dragged index finger down the touchpad of his own laptop, then groaned. "Why couldn't you update last night with everything else, Java?" he sighed. Then, peering over the top of the monitor to Jude he asked, "You need me to grab you anything to drink? I'll get my coffee now while my computer finishes up all of its shenanigans." Entirely possible that Jude already had his own drink, since he worked here and had arrived first, but he wanted to be polite and ask again anyway.

Jude's expression had gone pensive, considering the possibility of three lines down the side of a car, his mind whirling to compare it against the pictures of that self-same weird stuff he'd seen cropping up here and there on the internet. Usually they were blurred, dirty, and at least half of the comments on reddit were simply the word 'photoshopped'. Usually, Jude was inclined to agree. Sometimes, though....

He blinked up at the question, and there was a twenty second delay while he processed, running through what Ian had just said to figure out -- oh. He stood quickly, shaking his head as he reached out to lower the laptop about 45 degrees. Not actually enough to keep anyone from looking, but it made a point, at least.

"Um. I can..." He hesitated. He got drinks when Ian and he worked on math together, but this was different. Was it weird? "If you want something, I can? I have staff discount..."

"Oh, sure, if you want," Ian replied with awkward but pleasant surprise. "Thank you," he then added, fixing his glasses before digging his wallet out of his pocket. He withdrew a few dollars and folded them in half before offering them to Jude. "I guess just my usual, that soy milk latte. Iced, since it's sort of hot out, please."

The red-haired boy considered another moment, then dug out another dollar and added conspiratorially, "You wanna split one of those big M&M cookies with me, too?" It would be a nice distraction from thoughts of monsters.

Another man might have protested the money; if Jude had been anything more than just appearances, he would have shrugged it off. But he wasn't, so instead he shrugged and took it, between two fingers, offering a nervous butterfly of a smile before he stepped back toward the counter. For the moment, he obviously trusted Ian with his things, not to snoop or to let anyone take off with his laptop. Or maybe it hadn't even occurred to him.

At the counter, his hair was tousled as he ducked under the divider, apparently to take up space beside the girl currently working and make the drinks himself. That was probably a health code violation, but no one really seemed to care that he wasn't on shift, that he wasn't wearing an apron. This was not, after all, Starbucks.

Ian could have a good five or six minutes of peace before Jude came back with food, drinks, and change. In that amount of time, God willing, his computer would finally start to respond, too.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 18, 2011 1:00 pm

Ian climbed into his seat and squirmed to get comfortable, then propped his chin up on one hand as he clicked through all of the update prompts. No, he didn't want the tool bar. No, he wasn't going to backwards-engineer the software. Yes, install the stupid thing....

Then he leaned back on the stool as the computer restarted. The red-haired boy clasped his hands behind his head, looking over at Jude behind the counter. And wobbling slightly as he narrowly avoided tipping the chair over backwards. A dull thud sounded as he banged his elbow against the table, and he hissed slightly between his teeth.

Once his computer restarted and his elbow stopped smarting, Ian peeked over the top of his laptop to make sure that Jude's was still there. No one had really walked past the tables, down the narrow pathway, but he did so anyway, just so he could truthfully say that he had kept watch. Then he started up his browser and crept up out of his chair again when he saw his friend start to return.

On his screen behind him, Ian's browser pulled up r/senshi, topped with a recent photo of a damaged car - it looked rather like the one the boy had just described. But, for the moment, he did not see it.

Jude didn't just stop at the counter to order; instead he'd ducked behind to make up their drinks properly. Soy latte was a travesty, but if it was what Ian wanted, he could deal at least some. His own beverage of choice involved much more espresso, proper milk, sugar, hot even in the heart of winter. Nothing was quite like hot coffee.

At least the cold drink made it all easier to carry. He set Ian's cup down at his elbow, the cookie propped carefully across the mouth, and stacked the change neatly to one side of it. He radiated heat; it was much warmer behind the counter than on this side, and the coffee clutched in his other hand didn't help much.

He blinked down at the picture on Ian's screen, taking in the familiar reddit layout, and it brought him up short. "...um. Here's the...you're on...uh. That's the one?"
PostPosted: Sun Aug 28, 2011 12:35 pm

Ian pulled his hands away from the cup as Jude set it down, not trusting his elbows not to knock it over or something, but smiled and thanked him. "You can have half the cookie if you want," he added, picking up the treat using napkins for each hand and attempting to break it as close to half-and-half as possible.

He noticed the picture as soon as his friend did, leaning back over to glance at the screen as Jude pointed it out.

"Oh, uh, yeah," he said, a bit surprised to see the photo there. "I didn't take that one, though." Then the red-haired boy laughed once and quickly ammende, "I mean, I took a picture but it didn't come out too well 'cause we moved right when I tried to take it and it got sorta blurred." Phone cameras had come a long way in the last few years, but they were still not exactly known for producing the greatest images.

Ian set the two cookie halves down, indicating to Jude that he had first pick, then picked up his change to pocket it. "Thanks again," he added, then took a sip of his own beverage. One hand went for the mouse, and he glanced at his friend to see if he was still reading the page or not, before scrolling down a little.

"... I'm still not sure whether to get angry or not when I see people saying that these pictures we post are shopped. I mean, I might not believe it, either, but still. People have died here."

Jude folded slowly down into his own chair, both hands curled around the mug in his hands, staring at the page with his head tipped to the side. To be fair, the picture did look kind of shopped. The claw marks down the sides must have been done by something incredibly sharp, as they left almost no drag in their wake. Had it been a scrape along a wall, or against a fence or a pole, the edges of the 'wound' would have been peeling up. Instead there were just empty spots, sheered straight across, impossibly clean and without a mark on the car otherwise.

"...it looks fake, though." He didn't even really mean to say it. The words fell out of him unbidden, and as soon as they did, Jude's eyes flicked up onto Ian instead. Embarrassed, maybe. "Not saying it is, but it looks it."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 08, 2011 5:35 pm

"Fake like monsters, I guess," Ian replied with a humorless laugh. "Oh well. I don't think anyone got hurt, at least. This time." He climbed into his chair and peered at Jude over the top of the open screen.

Then, thinking to change the subject from monsters, he asked, "Your computer looking okay now? All updated?" He scrolled down a little further on his message board, quickly scanning the messages for any other decidedly local news. "I swear half that media stuff I don't even use most of the time."

Various blurred photographs filled the rest of the r/senshi front page, and Ian half-wished he had taken a picture of his own to upload. Just to contribute.

He munched contemplatively on his cookie. "It's like, for all that I'm sure most of the internet wishes superheroes were real, it seems an awful lot like they're not willing to believe any of the real stuff when it happens. I wonder if there's any way to change people's minds, though, short of, you know, dragging them all out here for a week or whatever." ... That almost seemed cruel.

Instead of replying immediately, Jude was quiet for a moment -- thinking over his words with a slow look around the room, fingers shifting somewhat uncomfortably against the buttons of his mouse. He tried not to upset, when he could, and it seemed obvious that Ian had some kind of stake in all of this. He seemed bothered by the photoshop comments, by the lack of belief, but on the other hand...

"...even if you brought them out here, I'm not sure they'd believe you." It was a careful, delicate way of putting his own disbelief out there. Sure, he'd seen some wrecked cars, heard rumors, watched shaky video footage. He'd investigated at length. He was curious about the whole thing. But on the other hand...

"I've never seen anything in person." The look he flicked back toward Ian as he said it was nervous. Halfway expecting to get his head bitten off.
