The book was purple, which on its own might have been enough to get Jude in a bit of trouble. He would have referred to his notebooks as deep violet, most likely, which definitely wouldn't have helped his case -- the ability to classify colors, especially girly colors, wasn't high on the list of 'things that get you in with the popular kids'.

Combine his choice of notebooks with the short essay he'd been hauled up in front of class to read today, and the recipe was one for mockery. Book dangling dangerously over a garbage can, several loose pages slipped, started to easy out from under the cover. Story notes, four pages of outline that he'd dedicated his entire math period to putting in order, the corners adorned with terrible sketches of what the main characters might look like, poked dangerously far out, threatening to flutter down into the trashed spaghetti in the garbage bag...

"Don't!" Jude's voice came out too high pitched, too yelping, his eyes gone wide and an arm stretched out after pages. The first one broke three, and the second boy laughed, catching the back of his school uniform to keep him from getting close enough to grab it. All he could do was watch it fall with a wince.

Lorne was walking by on his way to class - just the next room down, when glancing in the door of a particular classroom he saw a sight that seemed all to common in summer school. Perhaps that is what you get when you mix flunkies with those trying to get ahead in academics. It was a pitiable sight either way. He wished someone would do something about it. But...no one else seemed to be around yet. No teachers, or principal...he was all there was.

Lorne wasn't a very well liked guy. Not because he was a jerk or anything like that, but because he was just...strange - the optomistic, wide-eyed, emo-wannabe. No one liked wannabes. 'Posers.' Really he dressed like he did cause he liked it. Some people were just way too stuck on sterotypes.

Oh wait - wasn't that what he just did? Lumping 'flunkies' and 'scholarly' people to summer school drama? Oops.

But back to the matter at hand! Lorne stepped in the doorway, book bag slung over his shoulder, he leaned on the frame.

"H-hey, guys~ Not cool, let's stop this nonsense...kay?"

He stepped into the middle of the tallest boy's taunt, cutting it off before it's certainly stupid finale: something about princelings and Sears, some probing mockery about rich boys and, yes, Jude's preferred style of dress, once he stepped off school grounds. At least the slight young man wasn't crying. Not yet. He'd give point to himself later.

The interruption, however, was the final straw in this teasing game. Lorne stepped into the room and the bully opened his fingers, notebook tumbling into the dirty trashcan, several pages slipping free into something wet and red. Jude immediately hopped forward to snatch after it, and this time, they let him do it.

They were done anyway, snickering to themselves as they turned toward Lorne [or, more accurately, the door]. For one moment, eyes landed on the newcomer, and they tried to decide exactly what to do about him. It was late -- after a moment, the leader just shouldered past him, too-roughly, shoving him out of the way as best he could, and the others followed suit with snickering comments that, brilliantly, contained the word 'f**' more than once.

These boys obviously weren't in summer school for their stunning creative writing abilities.

Jude, on the other hand, might have been. He was still fishing loose pages out of the trash, fumbling to shake off the worst of the mess, his fingers trembling as his eyes scanned the pages to make sure he could still read the key points. The look he flicked to Lorne was brief and nervous, but above all else, it was embarrassed.

Lorne stared after the group of thugs and shook his head. What a waste. Honestly! If people would put half as much effort into their studies and becoming useful to society as they did trying to be cool or bad a** the world wouldn't be in the sorry state it was in.

Terrorists walking the streets, bullies in the school - what was the difference? It was all a negative impact on what could have been a positive progression in the world. It didn't seem like Lorne was going to get his group Kumbaya anytime soon....

Looking back into the room, Lorne laid his bag down on one of the empty desks.

"They didn't ruin everything did they?" He asked, fishing through his bag for page protectors and sanitized hand wipes and offering them to Jude. Because seriously? having to dig in the trash can? Gross.

"...a little bit." It was down-trodden, miserable, came out of Jude before he had time to really think about it -- and then he realized how ungrateful that sounded, eyes flashing up onto the other boy instead. There was spaghetti sauce on his book, several of the pages splattered, but at least Jude would be able to get his writing back. The drawings, on the other hand, were a lost cause.

To be fair, though, they'd probably been a lost cause before they ever hit the garbage can. He wasn't much of an artist.

"Um. Thanks." Page protectors were a bit late, but the hand wipes at least would help. He patted gently at the cover of his book and around the edges of pages, shaking his head just a little bit. "I should do more stuff on the computer, but it's harder to think that way."
