The air hung hot and heavy over the land and even the height of the mountains made little difference. Summer was well under way and even though the days were growing shorter the heat seemed to be getting worse. In a small clearing that served as 'home' for the night a white stallion stood at the base of a tall tree working at the fastener that held his fox fur cloak in place on his back. Once undone he pulled the white fur off his shoulders and deposited it on the tiger skin and orange paper lanterns that already lay in a pile. They had all been in agreement that it was too hot for the furs but neither of the boys had been willing to leave them behind. In one way or another they held value in the eyes of their owners.
After shaking himself off the white stallion wandered over to where a pink scaled kirin lay in the shade her red marked fox resting beside her. He leaned down to nudge her gently before easing himself to the ground as well. The sun was high in the sky and would be for a while still. Here, on the ground in the shade, the temperature was at least bearable.
"I think...this is the hottest it's got..." He muttered to his companions in the native soquili tongue. His speech had slowly been improving since he had first arrived. With the kirin unable to speak his birth tongue with him and his partner he had decided that they would speak the native language all the time for her benefit. She was a kirin, it was her right to know what was going on. "When is hot season done here?"

The black marked stallion stood away from the other three drinking deeply from a stream. The water was nowhere near as cool as Torao would have liked it. It was either run off from the hot springs that had only cooled a little on it's way down to them or the sun was bearing down on them more than it had any right to do. Given the day and their location both options were equally as likely.
As his younger friend voiced his unhappiness the light cream colored stallion finished drinking and straightened up. "I think yer right." He said turning to face the others before grumbling when he saw how they were arranged. The large stallion knew he shouldn't mind that Hisoka and Sabella were close to each other. He understood perfectly that there relationship was that of siblings with the kirin being the older sister and Hisoka being the younger brother. He also understood that at some point he was supposed to have children with this mare whether he wanted to or not. Torao's possessive nature didn't care about any of this.
Grumbling the stallion marched over to the cluster and dropped unceremoniously on to the ground beside the white stallion sandwiching Hisoka between himself and Sabella. Once he settled into a comfortable position he lowered his head over the stallion's back claiming the youngest of the three as his. As it should be. "Sa-chan, how long does summer last here?" He asked not completely forgetting the earlier question. It just wasn't something he readily knew the answer to.

Sabella had to try very hard to stop herself from laughing openly at Torao's display. Laughing aloud was bad enough without laughing at a male and a stallion who was meant to serve as her husband at that. It was just becoming easier and easier to forget all the proper ways she had learned from her herd. This group was such a bizarre mix of proper and polite and insane and rude.
In the beginning things had been so tense between all of them and she had been better off in the clutches of her herd. Torao had pushed her around and Hisoka had fought him only to make matters worse. The day that they had all met her herd she had been certain everything would start to crumble completely apart. Torao had been about to murder her father for suggesting that he wed her, a mare he didn't even feel friendship towards, she could see it in his eyes.
Looking around her now she was beginning to question her past judgements. Settling for a refined smile she answered the question on everyone's mind, "It should begin cooling off in a few weeks." She wanted to tell them to hang in there but didn't want to see the glare that would undoubtedly settle on Torao's face for the remark. "Until then, we should stick to the shade."

"That long, Sarin?" Hisoka wasn't sure he could make it that long. He couldn't ever remember days like this back before he had come to the Kawani lands. Granted they had lived pretty far north at that time but this was ridiculous. Sabella had taken the liberty of informing them that there was a jungle just to the south of their new home upon arrival. A jungle.
The youngest let his head droop to the ground. It wasn't like he disliked hiding in the shade all day. For the most part they just slept low to the ground in similar formations to what they were in now. Perhaps laying so close to one another was not the smartest thing in the world for beating the heat but it was more comfortable than being apart.
"I took fur off for a reason, Torao." he muttered butting the other stallion with his head. Lying together was fine but there was a limit to the amount of contact Hisoka could endure without over heating. "Get off me."

Torao growled and grumbled unhappily at the order but he still reluctantly pulled his head away. As much as he would have loved to protest he didn't feel like fighting Hisoka right now. It was too hot and despite the fact that Hisoka was a bit smaller Torao knew very well that he made up for it with speed.
"What happened to the cute Hisoka that used to hide from thunder storms?" He mumbled setting his head down on his forelegs. He didn't have to see the kid to know that he had rolled his eyes. Torao could practically hear them and taste the annoyance radiating off of his friend, his partner, and, on a good day, his boy friend. Really the both knew what had happened, Hisoka had grown up. And much to Torao's dismay this seemed to include the arrival of thorns that severely limited contact.
"I miss being able to knock you over just by leaning on you." Now he was just teasing. Was it smart? No. Did he care. Not particularly.

This time Sabella failed to keep herself in check. Quietly laughter bubbled out of her throat earning her perturbed look from Nichi. As quickly as it had started it died off and she collected herself giving an apologetic look to the fox. It was only with this group that Sabella had to constantly remind herself not to act so strangely. With literally anyone else behaving as she was expected to was second nature to her.
'I'm beginning to get too used to them and their ways,' Sabella thought to herself. 'I'm adapting.' If she looked at it in such a way everything started to make a little more sense. She had always been told that she would have to adjust to suit her husband and that was exactly what she was doing. Her husband was just strange. His love wasn't really any more normal either.
"Hisoka," She ventured hoping that she wasn't being rude in joining in where she hadn't been told to. "Were you really scared of thunder? Or was it the lightning?" If she was being rude it was a safer bet speaking to Hisoka. She had learned very quickly that he had an unusual respect for her and her kind. If Hisoka was around nothing short of his death would stop him from protecting her.

As grateful as Hisoka was that Torao had actually listened, for once, he was still feeling a strong desire to either bite or kick the larger stallion. Or perhaps both. He had been young when they met so naturally he had been smaller. That wasn't something that the idiot cat needed to bring up all the time. It was all together likely that he would have said something to this extent had Sabella not started laughing.
For a moment after she stopped Hisoka continued to stare at the kirin. He couldn't be entirely certain but he couldn't remember her ever laughing before. They'd been convinced that the first time the mare had given them a sincere smile that the world was going to end. After overcoming the shock he seemed to be experiencing he frowned slightly. Of all the things she could of asked she just had to pick something that would result in snickers from Torao.
He relented. Sabella was a kirin and his friend. If he couldn't tell her these things then who could he tell?
"Was a long time ago." Really it wasn't that long but he didn't need to tell her that. "It was light and thunder. Together. I thought...gods were angry with me." He grumbled slightly at the memory. "Torao did not help." Hisoka shoot him an angry look. "He says it is not the gods just fire falling from the sky!" Honestly Hisoka could barely believe that he had actually believed his partner about that.

Hisoka's confession left Torao roaring with laughter. He had forgotten all about that conversation. All he remembered was the white yearling darting across the burned remains of the courtyard to dive for cover next to his partner. At that time that was all they had been. He smirked and glanced sideways at Hisoka. That hadn't lasted long.
"It's not like that's a lie!" Torao managed to choke out as his laughter finally died down. It was high time he defended himself. "What happens when lightning hits? Fire. Lightning's fire from the sky." Really he had said it to comfort Hisoka in the first place. Torao didn't really believe in gods unless he needed someone to lay blame on but it seemed better to have fire falling than a vindictive god on your hands.
As he finished speaking the low, distant rumble of thunder filled the silence. Torao scowled. "Looks like we might get fire today." That was the last thing they needed, more heat. "You better stay away from here!" He shouted up at the sky. "Hear me?!"

The kirin gave the young stallion a sympathetic look. "There are worse things to be scared of." She whispered, leaning in to be heard over Torao's laughter. She'd seen creatures scared of much stranger things in her life. There had been a kirin female a few years younger than she that was terrified of butterflies. Not long after that she had met a lizard that was scared of shadows.
As Torao calmed she listened carefully. Tactless as he was he did have a point. Lightning was made from fire. It was white fire or sometimes blue or purple but it was definitely fire. She opened her mouth to say something of that nature but was cut off first by thunder and then by Torao's ranting. She sighed and waited for him to quiet down before trying to speak again.
"Thunder is loud and comes from nothing and lightning is fire, as Torao said. It makes sense to be afraid...but..." She glanced at Torao. He hadn't cut her off yet so she assumed it was still safe to speak freely. "If the storm comes here...it will bring shade and cooling rain." She didn't like correcting males but given their current discomfort it seemed wise to point out the benefits a storm may bring them.

After fuming for a moment the youngest calmed. He didn't particularly care whether or not Torao had been right he wasn't going to tolerate being laughed at. Not by that bone-head. There would be consequences, oh yes, he just hadn't decided what they would be yet. As Sabella spoke Hisoka's eyes wandered up to the greying sky. Perhaps pushing Torao out in the open to play with his fiery friends would be adequate punishment.
After contemplating that for a moment he decided against it. There would be no way to keep Torao in the open without being in danger himself. There were easier courses of action to take that would be just as, if not more, effective.
Letting out a puff of air Hisoka curled in closer to Sabella and lay his head on her folded forelegs. "Not scared anymore." He muttered peering up at her. Yes this would be quite effective. Despite the fact that everyone in the area knew who Hisoka really liked, Torao would still grow envious. He always did whenever Hisoka showed any signs of affection to others no matter how small. "I'm glad for storm now." Doubly so now that he knew it would help them cool off.

Torao's eyes narrowed. It was just another of Hisoka's ploys. The boy had a million of them. Torao knew this. He understood that it didn't actually mean anything. Hisoka was hoping to piss him off. It would be better to just pretend everything was fine...Not happening.
Torao snarled and grumbled before pushing himself halfway up only to drape his entire front half over Hisoka's back. "Stop it." He muttered.
A wiser group would sit down to talk about these issues. They would calmly and rationally go over how certain things bothered them and resolve the issues. A wiser group, however, wouldn't have these issues in the first place. A wiser group wouldn't mind a little bit of light teasing or shared affections. Really it seemed that the only remotely smart one in the bunch was Nichi. A familiar. How unfortunate.

Sabella sighed. It was a shame that things always somehow managed to come back to this single point. It was as though they were caught up in some strange loop. No matter what happened Torao would say something, anything, Hisoka would take offense to it and find someway to get back at the stallion, often times this involved her, and then Torao would get mad. They could be having a conversation about lunch and in the end it would boil down to some quarrel between the two stallions. Somehow it always seemed to come down to her to fix it.
She gently dislodged herself from Hisoka before standing gracefully. "I'm a little thirsty." She offered as explanation before bowing her head and heading off to the tiny stream. It was still in sight so Hisoka would not worry but it was at least far enough away that perhaps the two could work through the situation.
She had thought that things would change significantly after moving. It seemed she was wrong. Their personalities just clashed now. Their experiences had reshaped them. Their forms no longer fit as well. Too many gaps. She frowned as she brought her mouth to the water. The only way things would really change for the better was for a new experience to come along and reshape them one more time. They needed one more chance to work as a team. A real team.

It had been a couple weeks since that insufferably hot day by the stream. The temperatures had returned back to a normal, semi-comfortable level. A soquili might not want to run a long race out in the sun but in the shade of trees it was a perfectly comfortable temperature.
However, this day, the pink scaled kirin observed, was unusually cool. Turning her amber colored eyes skyward she marked that everything was still clouded over. It had been this way since the previous evening. It was as though the clouds were trying to smother the world. She closed her eyes, keeping her face pointed to the heavens, and took in a deep breath.
The day was peaceful enough even if it was cold. There had been no fight between the boys this morning or at least not before she had gone off to take a walk. She'd left Nichi with them to keep an eye on things. Today might be the day that things would change. She shuddered and opened her eyes. She had to be brave now but this was probably the most terrifying and defiant thing she would ever do.
Next to her there was a rustle in the bushes and as she turned her head to see what it was her little fox friend popped out and perched on a rock in front of Sabella. "Nichi...what is it?"
For a moment the fox just smiled, eyes shut, as she adjusted herself. She sat up tall and swept her bushy tail in front of her. Once finished she greatly resembled a statue of a shrine fox, or at least that was what Hisoka had said. To Sabella the little fox always looked like she had some wicked secret that could mean life or death but she would never share that secret with anyone. Nichi approved of both of these opinions. It made her feel important and the real reason why she sat in such a manner was simply that it was comfortable. That was less interesting.
"The so-called 'fox' has left your den for the springs." She reported, her voice somewhat yappier than one would expect. "He's left the 'tiger' prowling alone but there was no fight. If you're going to act, do it now before something changes." Without awaiting a response she slid off the rock and darted out of sight to enjoy the rest of the day.
Sabella watched her friend disappear, like a spirit, before turning to face the cave that they had taken up residence in temporarily with the increase in summer rain showers. "Be brave." She reminded herself as she set off in that direction. It was hard to feel brave, though, when everything you had ever been told was telling you not to do this.
