Mercedes finished her mouthful of grass and went to the nearby stream to get a drink. Suddenly the river sped up and splashed her as she leaned down to take her drink. She snorted at the river and jumped in, trying to get the river back. She reared up whinnied as she trotted up and down the river, her forelock and mane sopping wet and glistening in the sun. Her periwinkle markings flashed in the sunlight as she spun around and kicked at the water

Taoshira yawned as splashing woke her up from her afternoon nap. Her eyes opened against her will causing her to blink repeatedly, trying to clear the sleep from her eyes. The splashing now caught her attention again, there was a nearby stream but nobody really ever splashed in it. She got up from her nice little bed in a little grove of trees and walked to the edge. Sticking her head out of the tree line just enough to see, she saw another little filly that looked her age. Ears perking up and her tail began to swish as she made her way along the edge of the tree line trying to bet a better look. She didn't want to reveal herself just yet, being the shy girl she is, but rather to observe the other girl and see what she does. It was only when her clumsy self fell and rolled out of the grove that she knew she would be spotted.

"HI THERE!" Mercedes whinnied at the filly. She cantered over but maintained a distance of about five feet so as not to spook the other off. "I'm Mercedes" she said eagerly. She was finally glad to meet someone of her age! All the adults were getting tiresome as they did not want to play or they saw her as a burden. She smiled as her periwinkle eyes glistened in the sunlight, brightened by the idea that she would maybe soon have a friend and playmate.

Encouraged by the filly, Taoshira closed the distance between the two. She seemed friendly so she didn't see any problem with meeting her. Nodding her greeting when she stopped she said with a smile, "Hi, I'm Taoshira...but you can call me Tashi. Its a lot easier to say." After looking the filly over some more, and seeing all the water driping off of her, she concluded that she was the one she had heard playing in the water. "Does the water feel nice? It's a pretty hot day outside." The weather was always a safe topic, she thought.

The filly nodded and smiled "Wanna come play in the water with me?" she asked happily and turned around to face the river. "The water's a little cold but it's not that bad" she added and motioned for the other filly to follow as she made her way to the water. "It's nice to meet you Tashi!" she added before she jumped back into the water.

Tashi followed her to the river's bank. It wasn't a fast moving river, nor was it that deep. The crystal clear water showed smoothed rocks that would be easy on their little hoofs, but would also cause a klutz like herself to slip. She stepped gingerly into the water, watching every step until all four legs were in the water. Beads of water flew towards her from where the other had just jumped in. And since she the water wasn't extremely cold she started splashing as well. She only just hoped that there were no adults around that they would bother, the adults always got mad at Tashi when she was around. "You were right Mercedes, the water isn't bad."

Mercedes nodded happily and smiled "Ya, it's really nice. I've never played in the river before now and I can't imagine why! Being black draws the heat so you think I would have figured this out sooner!" the small black filly shrugged and went to buck, but instead lost her balance and fell flat on her stomach, legs sprawled in all directions. She stood up quickly hoping the other filly hadn't seen. She was embarrassed if she could have blushed she would have.

"I can imagine that. It must get so hot for you. My coat isn't really dark but it still gets hot sometimes. I like to lay in the forest in the shade when its too hot. But like you, I haven't really every played in the river either." Tashi actually just laid down in the water since it wasn't that deep. She saw the other girl fall but tried to make it seem like she hadn't. I've already fallen in front of her, she thought. They were kind of alike and Tashi really wanted them to be friends.

The little filly nodded and replied "Yes trees are lifesaver! Do you live around here? I usually sleep here because there aren't a lot of adults around to ruin my fun. I can be as loud as I want and no one will tell me I need to be quiet or I need to calm down" she snorted as she thought about the adults who saw her as a 'burden' she hated being treated that way. She stepped out of the stream to shake off and began to graze again.

"I don't really have a set place that I stay. The adults don't really like me very much and I don't know why...so if I would have to call some place my home it would have to be here. Because like you said, there aren't a lot of adults around so I'm pretty safe." Tashi also got out of the water but instead of grazing she laid down and rolled. Then after rolling, she just laid there and sun bathed, trying to dry off.

"Ya, well I don't like adults. They're stuck up and usually mean, just like humans" she said with another snort and stretched as she laid down too. "You can come with me if you want, I have this cool little place in the forest" she laid on her side and stretched out before rolling back up onto her curled legs. "So I guess you don't have parents either?" she asked timidly, she knew that it could be a sore subject and didn't want to upset her newly found friend

Tashi was silent for a bit. This girl didn't like humans, granted Tashi hadn't had much interaction with humans but she didn't think they were bad. But parents. Oh parents, what a touchy subject that was. "I don't remember them..." She said quietly as she laid her head down. "What about you?"

"I don't remember much of mine either. The one thing I do remember is being with my parents, it was dark, the humans must have put us in a crate or something. They opened to up suddenly and tried to remove me from my parents. When my mother fought back the began to beat her and there was a loud blast, I think my father called it a gun? That was the last I remember of them" she looked at the ground "I don't remember how I got here even. But I'm strong and I can take care of myself" she said with a head nod. Mercedes was determined to find those men who ripped her away from her mother and father and make them pay, but first she needed to grow strong. "Sorry to bring up the subject, I didn't mean to reopen old wounds" she added

"Oh..." she said, feeling slightly awkward. "I'm sorry. I don't remember anything...nothing really. Just feeling lost and afraid. But I'm sure everyone feels like that at some point." Tashi got up and stretched. "I would like to have a family, but the adults don't like me, so it doesn't seem likely that I'll ever get one. But, how do they say it? 'Birds of a feather have to stick together'? Well...except we're not birds...and we don't have feathers..." Taoshira didn't know if she would know that saying or not so she just started grazing.

"Don't be sorry! It's not your fault. Besides it's given me a goal" she said. "Yes I know the saying, I think we'd look funny with feathers" she said giggling. She stayed laying on her curled up legs, her tail swishing from one side to the other keeping the flies at bay.
