Aagiro had been sad to leave the friendly sand cats. The Tuait'tekem had been a very lovely pride, and she thought maybe it had been a mistake to stay there for the handful of days she and Nen had. Only because it had made her start thinking about how lonely her life had been, and how nice it might have been living in a pride... or maybe... with a mate? Her gaze flicked towards Nen as they walked side by side and once again jerked off of him and back to where they were going. She was being foolish, it wasn't like he could read her thoughts or anything. The visit had dispelled the awkwardness between them for a time, but it had came back much thicker once they left the borders. So mostly they traveled in silence, and neither voiced the question of why they were still traveling together. Aagiro was a little curious of that, Nen's reasons for still going with her.
Her tail flicked and she sighed softly, still wishing she could come up with an idea of how to make things normal. But it seemed any sort of try and polite conversation was just as awkward thanks to her tendency to mostly complain and b***h about this and that. She wished she could have just done that, but her heart felt heavy and the feisty spark seemed to be missing from Aagiro of late. "So have you been to the Jini-Msemi lands before?" Her picked her way over a fallen tree, frowning as she felt the earth getting slightly damper. Aagiro had never been to a swamp before, and she and Nen had just entered one.

So…what was the reason for leaving the desert pride again? To see the world? Ammon’nen was quite liking the pride. The ruins was the perfect place for him to stay in the bright sunlight, and being in the desert made the land even cooler than where he originally from. Not to mention all the sociable lions! Unlike the certain pride that bore the red felines…But when Aagiro had said she was leaving the pride to travel, OF course Nen had to be right there. He didn’t tell her why, he really didn’t know why to begin with. Well, his heart knew the reasons, but try telling that to his brain. It didn’t work out so well.
But sometimes he regretted leaving the dawnwalkers. That silence…the awkward silence that had just ever so lovingly graced them had returned. Nen did not ask Aagiro to hunt, he did not call her names, he just walked…in silence…really going nowhere in particular, just walking.
“…Jini-Msemi? The swa…swamps?” His stared down at his feet where his toes wiggled in much wetter dirt. “…I have now.” Nen had met multiple lions from these lands. They always said they were looking for their names, which confused the starry pelted male.
“Have you?” He followed her footsteps over the log, the stench of the wet lands becoming stronger as they neared the borders.

It was almost... a little unnerving trying to have a normal conversation with Nen. It unsettled Aagiro's stomach a little, especially because she knew how easy it was to hold conversations with other lions. But with Nen? It seemed like she should be insulting something trivial or telling him he was an idiot. She was a little surprised when his answer came. She was under the impression that he'd been ... everywhere quite frankly. Then the realization that she thought this surprised her, and she glanced at him almost suspiciously. Why the hell was she thinking about him being some sort of worldly traveler? The only thing she needed to know about Nen was that he was an irritating buffoon with a sick sense of humor.
"Hmph." Was the only reply he got, Aagiro was clearly annoyed. But not at Nen, no. She was annoyed with herself. Her paws were sinking into the earth just a little as they continued in further. It seemed as though all of the sunlight had been swallowed up by the swamp, it was very dark. Soon they were going to have to pick their way over fallen trees and large rocks if they didn't want to wade in the murky waters, she saw. She jumped onto one of the large rocks, it was large enough to probably hold three other grown lions beside her.
"No, I haven't." She finally answered, probably ten minutes too late. "I always wanted to know what the big deal was... the lions from here always seemed weird. Out of all the prides I've heard about it seems like... I've met many more lions from here, but have heard very little." She moved toward of the edge of the rock, crouching low to lean over and peer into the swampy waters. "Why would anyone want to live in this dump?" She muttered, not being able to grasp the beauty in the land one bit. "Hmm, though it seems fitting for you." She stated, smirking. Ah, that felt much better. She didn't mean her words one bit, not really. She had realized by now that Nen really enjoyed the dark, in fact it seemed like he loathed the sun... but that was all that she thought he'd enjoy about this place. She'd secretly watched him a few times, he seemed to really enjoy other's company. Not hers, of course. She frowned down at the murky water, sulky. And annoyed at feeling sulky.

Ammon’nen couldn’t help but stop in his tracks. Why was she pissed off now? What did he say wrong this time? That he hadn’t been to the swamps? He didn’t travel ALL around when he was a rogue, and when he did…it was to the more well known prides; the pridelands were the most notable. He continued to walk just after a moment, following her on the large rock.
“Oh…” This silence was driving him nuts! He had to find a way to break it. “I guess it’s something you just learn to grow on. Everyone has different traditions. Like your Pridelands are different than my ghostlands.” He didn’t know what else to call his old pride but the land of the ghosts. He nodded in agreement, sitting on his pedestal, gazing to the murky waters below. “Some naming quest they go on, but that is all. I like the name I am born with, I couldn’t imagine changing it.” Should he do it? Oh he should do it…but why did she still have to be talking? His jaw dropped in feigned hurt. “I beg your pardon?” Okay, now he could do it! He gave a quick shove towards Aagiro, pushing her off the rock and into the muck below.
“I do say, I think it is well befitting you too!” that smirk, oh the old Nen was coming back.

She knew nothing of his ghostlands, and she only knew the customs of the pridelands because... well a lot of lions knew about the pridelands and their value and all of that crap. She was about to remind him that she may have been born in the pridelands but that didn't make her a pridelander. Even if she hadn't strayed far... she had also been about to ask him just how much did he know about the pridelands, just to pretend he knew nothing. It would have been good, it would have set them back into their old way of back and forth. As infuriated as that had been...
But before she could say anything or question why it would matter if his name was changed from 'Nen' because it didn't seem that special of a name anyhow she felt the ground move out from under her. Her eyes widened and the sheer look of surprise and terror on her face was comical enough to make the most serious of lions chuckle at least. Then came the splash of dirty, mud filled water. Aagiro gasped and gulped at air, paws flailing slightly before she realized the liquid only came up halfway. "Nen!" She screeched, angry as hell. Why had he just done that for? If she'd known Nen was just short for something and if she'd known that it was Ammon'nen, it would have been one of those times she would have used the full name.
The water was freezing, she suspected it was from the lack of sunlight. She began to stand up and try and crawl to a nearby tree when suddenly something hoped. Aagiro gave a surprised yelp and flew backwards, once again falling back in the muck. "Whatthehellisthat!" She yelled out, actually sounding afraid. It was sort of amusing too, considering Aagiro did not normally strike others as a fraidy-cat. It was just a frog, a rather large frog, but Aagiro had never seen a frog before. She'd never even heard other lions speak of frogs, not even the swamp-cats she'd met over her life. She scrambled back to her paws. "Oh gods, there's snakes! Nen!" She whined, panicking slightly. What if those were poisonous?
"I'm going to kill you!" She'd finally climbed onto the branch opposite the large rock, sounding distressed rather than angry. She'd slipped from the tree once, she had never known mud to be this slimy. She shook as best she could, turning her gaze onto him. Oh she did not like the swamp! "Nen you get over here now!" She growled, though she was already pacing back and forth on the long trunk of the tree, and then she spotted how to get back to the rocks.
Once she did she went crashing into Nen, sending them both flying into the mud below. They certainly had been tumbling into weird places a lot, hadn't they? But before she could thwack him in the face she realized that one of those scary, weird creatures was on his face. But it was less scary sitting on the male lion's face. There they were, Nen on his back and covered in mud, Aagiro pinning him and covered in mud. And that stupid, slimy creature. Right on Nen's face. "Holy crap! Oh gods, Nen, Nen it's going to kill you!" It was hilarious, the back and forth between her anger and her fear for things unknown. So when she swatted at Nen's face to knock it off, as pissed as she was at the male she didn't want him dead, and it jumped and landed on her, she was shrieking again.
She'd flown backwards off of him, squirming but not really trying to swat at it. "Getitoffgetitoffgetitoff!" She was shouting, almost in tears. This was certainly a side of Aagiro Nen had never seen.

“Yes?” He asked innocently as she screeched out his name for the first time. Oh Nen loved payback, especially if it was payback against Aagiro. That just made it even more fun! The splash of the muddied water made his stand up, trying to avoid the dark substance from getting on his nice white fur. Unfortunately, he couldn’t avoid it much, as small flecks clung to his mane. That was not going to be fun getting out. Already he could feel the muck just seeping down to his flesh. Oh, he would not be coming back to the swamps any time soon, that was for sure.
When Aagiro stopped flailing in water, Ammon’nen decided to lay back down on the rock now slippery with mud. His head tilted as she yelled out about the small creature that flung itself into the water. A snake she called it? That was far from a snake! It was just a frog. A small (well…big), harmless frog. If Aagiro looked around carefully, she could see the small brown creatures hopping all over the swamps. Unless she actually did see a snake, but the gray eyes of the starry lion did not see anything of the matter slithering around the water.
“Oh, be careful Aagiro!” He said in a sing-song tone. “I think there is one right behind youuuu~” he chuckled, a wide smile at her ‘killing’ comment. And there was the death threats again. “Oh Kitten! How good it is to have you back, I have missed you soooo~” He was still in a singing pitch. This situation was just to priceless not to laugh! How could she mistake a little frog for a snake. She knew what a snake was…didn’t she? The thought caused Nen to break down in an actual laugh. His laughter broke into spurts as he tried to breathe, watching as she pulled herself onto the log, getting ready to jump.
“Oh…Kitten…” he said into between laughing breaths. “Be…careful…it’s…” SPLASH! …slippery! When the lioness jumped, it pushed both the lions back into the much. Nen was caught on his back, the slimy frog that Aagiro had been freaking out about sitting right on his dark nose.
“It’s going to…what?” His ears flickered as another smile widened on his lips. “Bahahahaha!” he laughed so hard as she went to swipe at the amphibian, causing the frog to jump from him, and onto the lioness. “Oh…Oh my you are killing me,” he laughed and laughed, striking the water with his paws as he couldn’t contain himself. But as the buildup of water began to swell in her eyes, Nen pushed aside his laughter, grabbing the frog by one of its legs. He dangled it in front of his mouth, as if about to eat the said creature.
He didn’t know. He just gave a smirk towards the lioness as the creature swayed from side to side. “This, my dear kitten, is a fffrrroooogg.” He said it slowly, making sure she caught every word of it. “You know, I hear the lions in this pride find this a delicacy. Shall we try it?” He slowly lowered the frog to his mouth, not exactly going to eat it, but more so wanting to see the female’s reaction. If she freaked out about a frog just inches from her face, what would she think if he actually ate it?

Aagiro probably would have started crying at some point, which would have been mortifying. Luckily all of Nen's laughter and teasing remarks kept the fury equal with the fear, and when she'd went to tackle him she didn't expect that they'd both end up back in the murky, disgusting water. Nen's laughter was... surprising to Aagiro. She didn't think she'd heard him laugh quite so freely or so much on their journey, and another time it might have been almost... nice. But because it was at her expense it only served to make her feel pissed and very foolish. By the time he'd taken the creature off of her she'd realized it must not have been something harmful to her. He wouldn't have been laughing then, would he?
She lay their panting for a moment, righting herself and scrambling back from Nen. "Don't you dare!" She squeaked, sounding horrified. What the hell? Lions ate those? That was disgusting! It was slimy and horrifying and... gods above what kind of creature made those sort of sounds? If she'd been calmer she would have realized that one, there were quite a few frogs around, and two they were all croaking. Loud croaks, quiet croaks and shrill croaks. All of it seemed to create a sort of music to the swamps, but she'd not noticed.
She suddenly took a deep breath and climbed shakily to her paws, looking both hurt and embarrassed. Sure she'd tried to make him eat grubs one time but... who hadn't thought of at least trying on when they were a cub? And at least she knew what those were. Her chest rose and fell heavily, though she seemed to be calming down a little bit. She was still staring at Nen wide-eyed, mortified even if she hadn't gone to the point of crying. "You are the worst" She said quietly, oddly her words did not hold any anger. The panic from the unknown creature had seemed to wear the anger down, to a point where she was not really mad at Nen, just very very upset.
She was so sick of this, sick of his teasing and taunting. Even if she had provoked most of it. She couldn't stand it any longer, this was all just a game to him. The moment he'd made those terms for the bet... leaving the dawn walkers with her. The swamp. None of this mattered to him... merlin why did she think any of it could have? Why did she even want any of it to matter to him? Oh she was a fool, a bigger fool for actually being any part attracted to the a**.
"I'm leaving, and don't you dare follow me." She snapped, turning and trying to at least make a graceful exit. That proved to be rather difficult, because not even five steps away her paw caught a root under the murky water and she was sent tumbling face first back into the mess. She pulled herself back up but it had all proven to be too much for Aagiro, she was trying to gulp back tears. Oh he was horrible, none of this was fair! She stood their with her back to him, struggling to fight away the embarrassment and hurt. Why couldn't she just have laughed it all off? Said something witty or horrible and just... arrg!

Nen dropped the frog just inches from his mouth, the creature making a small splash into the waters below. “Oh geez, you really think I would’ve done that. I’m not that gross,” though, if he was a youngster in the swamps, he probably would have tried it. They do say kids do the darndest things.
…He was taken aback by her next comment. How was he the worst? Did she not realize that he was just joking…? Had he taken it maybe too far? He was just having a little fun. A frown appeared on his maw at her words. When she said she was going to leave, he moved to get off. He stopped at her emphasis. …great… Nen had stopped counting the points when he first started, but this just put him in the negative numbers. Nen -1000. Aagiro …to numerous to count.
“But…” he went to speak, but was cut off as she fell into the muck again. He didn’t crack a smile, nor did a snort of laughter come out. She wasn’t happy, and it radiated into the atmosphere. Having a little better balance than she, he jumped from the water onto the log, gripping it with his claws to he could maneuver himself easier. Crouching low, he moved towards Aagiro slowly. She may have said not to follow, and if she really wanted that, then he would…dare he say it….respect that. But he was not going to say goodbye like /this/. Oh no, he would feel horrible for the rest of his life if he did.
“Take my paw,” he said softly, one leg gripping the log, the other reaching out for her. “I’ll get you out of here, and then I won’t follow you…” what was this? Was that…sadness in his voice?

Aagiro hadn't managed to keep all of the tears at bay, but as she gulped mouthfuls of air most stayed clear of running down her face. She had heard him start moving through the water and part of her wanted to tell him to keep away from her, mostly because she was embarrassed, but another and less noticeable part of her was quite happy he was headed her way. Unless he meant to do something like put the frog on her head or shove her back in the mud or make fun of the fact that she was now the most pathetic creature in this swamp. She thought about ignoring him when he requested that he take her paw, even though about telling him to go jump off of a cliff. But... why was his voice like that? Not even once had Nen ever sounded sorry for his teasing or taunts or little tricks.
And why did it hurt so much when he told her he wouldn't follow? That he'd lead her out and then leave her be? Well, she knew why it hurt... but she'd told him to not follow! It was her fault! She just couldn't win, could she? One minute he was driving her up the wall and the next he was making her feel like a truly terrible and pathetic lioness. And then there were the rare moments where she felt... almost... no. No. She wouldn't think it, she didn't want to keep having the stray thoughts that if she just tried a little harder to be nice and maybe if he didn't tease so much maybe... just maybe they could be... friends. Yes, friends was a safe word.
She finally turned when she'd managed to get most of herself under control and took his paw without meeting his eye, finally with his help getting up onto the tree branch. "I don't want..." She began quietly, meaning to tell him that she didn't want him to not follow her, but she felt a little pathetic. And why did he sound sad? Likely because he was losing his favorite damned target. She placed a paw to her head, sighing and trying to sort out all of her thoughts. "You didn't have to laugh." She finally said, slightly huffy. She was trying to fix the problem without having to apologize, but she didn't quite know how... "I... I've never... seen a frog before.." She mumbled, staring down at her paws. "Andyou'renottheworst." The last bit was said even quitter and was so jumbled she wasn't even sure he'd understand what she'd said... which she was hoping for. She hadn't really wanted to admit that last part.
She must have been crazy. He'd finally driven her literally crazy. She knew it. But why was she feeling so bad for him? She was the victim here! "I'm just... sick of being some... stupid joke to you... okay?" She finally breathed out, this time her voice was stronger. Aagiro felt slightly relieved, finally being honest. Mostly honest. It counted as honest if you left out parts of what you really wanted to say, didn't it?

How could she have never seen a frog before. They had them in the rogue lands, especially where the muddy water holes were. He gave a small shrug, still frowning. She was looking down, so she would’ve missed is. His ear twitched at her quick comment. Nen didn’t catch all of it…something about the worst? He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it again. Should he have asked her to repeat it? If he was thinking it, he never expressed it to her. If she said it quickly, there must have been a reason for it. At least, that was his thinking.
The feel of the mud still soaking his skin made him very uncomfortable. Actually, this whole situation was rather uncomfortable. Here Nen was, always tormenting Aagiro, and she doing the same to him. Now, he felt sorry for doing so? Why was this? It’s amazing how things change in just an instant. First you can be the worst of enemies, and whatever time spent (whether it’s multiple years, or even just a few moons) together can make feelings for one another change. This is what was happening in case. Ammon’nen had definitely developed some sort of feeling for the female that went beyond just friends. He couldn’t tell her; the fear of rejection remained in his mind. He didn’t want to lose her forever.
“…You aren’t some kind of joke,” he said quietly, his tail flicking behind him. “You are…er…well I…” hmm… how to say this. Could he say this? “…I just like you…and well, whether you like it or not, you are like my best friend.” Phew. Well, it wasn’t the exact words he wanted to use. Somehow confessing your love in the stinky, muddy swamp was not his ideal of romance. He just hoped that Aagiro didn’t take it the wrong way.
“and friends joke on each other.” He said matter-of-factly, giving the black, mud-covered lioness a nudge.

She glanced up slightly when he stated she wasn't some kind of joke. Her eyes were narrowed just a tiny bit, considering that the words sounded rather bizarre coming from the male's mouth. He sure didn't treat her like not some joke. Even though, reluctantly she was beginning to admit to herself, she did tend up cause a lot of why he teased and joked and taunted with her. Her heart fluttered oddly as he began to stutter over his words, and she wondered why it was making her nervous. He... he... liked her? She brought her gaze further up, to meet his own but she did this slowly, fearing she might not be able to control her expression of surprise and then slight disappointment when he stated she was.. a friend. His best friend?
She blinked, swallowed. "Your... friend?" She repeated slowly. "Best friend.." She didn't know why she added that, she was trying to wrap her head around the infuriating, confusing question that was Nen. So caught up in her thoughts that when he nudged her she almost fell back off of the branch as she'd jumped back. Scrambling, she'd managed to jerk forward again. Much too forward, as she found herself pressed close to Nen, though this time they remained on the branch. She swore she was about to suffocate from her own heart climbing into her throat. She had to restrain herself from jumping back and maybe falling into the swamp, and even more so from nuzzling into his chest. As disgusting as it was... both of them were covered in much!
She moved a step back slowly, gaze lingering around their paws before she finally looked back in the direction she'd been going to leave in. "We... yes... alright. Friends." She mumbled, her words slightly nervous, and her mind boggled. Nen... really thought of her as his friend? She then shot a glance toward him, suddenly fearing this was some sort of trick. No, he'd definitely been being sincere. And because she realized this she could not help but feel a little disappointed. Friends was... okay. Oh crap, she hated herself, she really did. She had never in all her life imagined being attracted to a male like Nen, and especially had never considered wanting one for a life mate. And now... now that was exactly what she wanted. Maybe. Maybe she was just truly insane? Or maybe this was some weird phase?
"Maybe we should get out of the swamp, so we can clean ourselves off..." Damn, did everything have to be either extremely awkward or tense around them? She made herself meet his gaze, then forced a more common smirk of hers as she shot a paw out and lightly tapped in his chest. "I'll forgive you this time, princess." She said, though rather softly and not very mean as she climbed to all fours and began to pick her water over the different branches and rocks. Yes... that was something she would usually say, wasn't it? Well. Maybe not about forgiving him. Maybe that had been weird... should she take it back? But the easiest way to hide the disappointment was to cover it up... right?
Arrg, she was so sick of feeling so weird!

His nose twitched as she repeated the comment he had mentioned about just being friends. He couldn’t say he was slightly upset. She was suppose to say that they could be more than just friends…but she didn’t. Instead, yes, friends was it. Well, there were other fish in the sea, or perhaps…frogs in the swamps? Oh that was an idea where they could go next. The beach. There wouldn’t be any swamps to deal with, no stinky mud, just the wide open ocean. And usually the beach was much cooler from the breeze that emitted from the coast. If Aagiro hadn’t been there before, she would be in for a supise!
“Yes…” he stated, looking at his muddied body, and then hers. “I don’t even want to think about putting my tongue on this nasty stuff,” that would be a grooming nightmare! If they found a waterhole, he could just throw himself in the slightly less muddied water, before drying himself in a self grooming.
“Just this time Kitten? I’m hurt…” he feigned. When they were on much stable ground, his gray eyes turned towards the female in an almost devious manner. “You know…” he said after a while, junks of muck falling off his body as it began to dry. “You still never filled your part of the bet.” Smirk---jokingly of course, but it looked real enough.

When he mentioned the unavoidable grooming they'd have to be doing to themselves her face blanched. Oh, this was going to be gross. She vaguely wondered how often the swamp cats had to groom, or maybe they just didn't. She shuddered at the thought.
Her stomach seemed to settle more when he referred to her as kitten, it felt more normal but also less hostile than their usual back and forth. Who would have thought, a day the nickname actually seemed welcome! Well, welcome in a different manner than she'd welcomed it when they'd ran into the firekin.
They were finally coming out of the swamp, it was still just before dusk which surprised Aagiro a little. It had been so dark in the swamps she thought surely it would have been night by now. A silence had settled over the pair, and for once it didn't seem so awkward. Until Nen had to open his big mouth. As usual. One of them always seemed to mess something up. She'd been just ahead of him, and stumbled slightly when he'd spoken. So this was just some bloody little game? She whipped her gaze back over her shoulder but something clicked. Nen was joking. Right?
Didn't he get how pissed off those jokes made her feel? She huffed slightly and turned back to watch where she was going. "Knock it off, Nen." She growled softly, though she tried to tone down her urge to pick a fight with him. She wanted to keep her mouth shut, she really did. But if she had to put up with this crap all of the time and had to do it was his best friend... well she wouldn't just be calm about it. She whirled around again, frowning. "See? See that's exactly why you get me so pissed off! And have you ever stopped to think about maybe just how stupid that bet is? And how hurtful it is? Maybe I don't want to keep hearing about stupid cubs with you just from some stupid bet. Maybe I thought just maybe you'd want.." Her mouth clicked shut. Cubs with me without some bet hanging over your head, she'd been going to say. But he'd just called them friends, hadn't her?
Oh,she should stop being such a chicken, shouldn't she? "To forget that bet happened." She finished lamely, the pause awkward and her angry tone wavering. "Please." She added. It wasn't like she'd get used to his jokes now that they were... well, friends.

She did take all the fun out of some games. Had she missed the memo that friends joke with each other? He was obviously joking. There was no way Nen was going to force himself on her, make her bare his cubs without actually wanting to. He wasn’t that kind of guy. “Fine…Consider it forgotten,” the male said, not looking at her.
He gazed towards the sky, the sun sinking way below the ground as the silver ball replaced it in the air. Oh, nighttime, the best time of the day! They would be able to go rinse themselves off, and then begin their usual nighttime journeying. As if the situation about the bet never happened, Nen spoke quietly as the two began to walk. “I have the perfect place to go next!” Whether Aagiro was scared of not to find out that answer Nen didn’t know. He just hoped she had never seen the beach before, so would be in for a big surprise. “Oh…and Aagiro,” he turned his head to stare right into her eyes.
“My full name’s Ammon’nen,” he purred out. “Just thought I’d let you know that.” [end]
