Megalopolis's Past and Present

Currently, Megalopolis has the largest concentration of "supers" to normals in the world. Located somewhere along a pair of rivers in the middle-eastern area of the United States (somewhere around southern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia), Megalopolis is a small territory not quite separate from the United States, but not quite part of it either. Due to some smaller changes in the timeline compared to our history, the town that became Megalopolis incited a minor succession from the main United States around the 1900s. Because of it's special nature, it is treated with the sort of care that Native American reservations or Puerto Rico are treated, with special government liaisons. This is part of the reason that Megards are a separate currency, though the US dollar is still often used within Megalopolis.


►► Some Interesting Points of History

  • During the time of the first World War, magic began to reappear in this universe as well. It turns out most of the magical sources in the world hid themselves as a result of the Dark Ages, but when the Great War threatened to destroy civilization in Europe, some magical creatures came out of hiding, as well as wizards and druids and the like, just trying to end the war faster. Of course, most of the rest of the magical world was not ready to be revealed, but the damage was done. Not only that, but The Great War wasn't shortened any amount compared to our history, as magical forces had joined both sides of the war.

  • During the Cold War between Russia and the US, the same major events happened, but nuclear proliferation was not as wide spread. The two nations (and most of the world) had split their attention between splitting atoms and splitting genomes. Mutants had started appearing as early as the 1890's but it became more and more an issue as global nuclear and genetic research became increasingly common. Because there are very very few mutants that are able to do anything more than affect one or two people at a time, let alone level cities, few people are afraid of mutants individually. After all, very few mutants have the resilience to cope with being shot any more than a normal human could. Most people don't believe that mutants are the next stage of human evolution, not even the mutant population as a whole. They are seen, outside of Megalopolis, as freaks created by nuclear and genetic research gone wrong.


►► Megalopolis Today:

  • Despite all the strange changes in history, the world at large is pretty much the same as it is currently in the “real world”. It is as if the strange amalgam of fantastic historic events canceled out each other. John F. Kennedy was still assassinated, Joseph Stalin was still a brutal dictator and people still argue about if the Beatles or Elvis were better (Though, the conspiracies around Elvis's death are even more exaggerated, if that is even possible.) In fact, the most significant change in the world at large is Megalopolis's existence at all.

  • With all these factors, Megalopolis is literally teeming with stories and adventures and crawling super-powered people, whether through magic, or genetics or experimentation. There is even a section in the newspapers titled "Super Activity" which talks about day to day events in super crime and crime fighting. While there is a police force and even a federal agency, it is almost impossible to keep track of all the individual events in the city-state. It's an entire comic book universe rolled into one sprawling city, complete with mad science and mutants, leylines and wizards, robots and elves and all sorts of things, all rolled into one easy to find location.
