Aren't eco-friendly people suspicious? They totally are! With their tree hugging ideals, and saving trees, and recycling, and up cycling, and keeping plastics out of land fills! They MUST be up to something! They're definitely up to something if they don't BAG anything when they're shopping!
If you're wondering, my brother and I got stopped by the Receipt lady at Walmart who questioned us about cloths hangers. Yes CLOTHS HANGERS. Here is the full story:
---------------------------------------------------
College days are nearing and that means my brother is finally going off for the first time and needs to get some dormitory items. And since I was off from work today I decided to go blow about $400 to take him out. So all day, I took my brother out college shopping. Just buying all the necessaries like, pillows, bed sheets, drawers, medicine box. etc. We went to Target and we told the cashier lady "No Bags please. Just ring the book bag first and we'll put everything in it. smile We're being friendly to the earth today." and she was OH! OK! She even gave us a smile saying it wasn't often that people said 'no bags'.
We went to Walmart and we finished our shopping list, just small things, and we told the cashier, the same thing, except ring up the garbage can first and we'll put everything in it.
The only things that didn't fit were wooden hangers and the 5 bath towels my Bro picked out, we went to the door where another lady was standing there to check receipts.
She looks at the cart and asks, "Why aren't the hangers in the bag!?", because they were laying in plain sight. We told her "We don't need bags, we're eco friendly!" She was like "uh huhn" and looks suspiciously at the receipt, "I don't see them on there! And where are the bath towels!? I see them here but not in the cart!"
Because you know towels are more expensive than the hangers, and yes we opt to pay more for towels than the "stolen hangers" she suspects. And we'd be the most craftiest of shop lifters if we put an item we were stealing in plain sight! Mind you the bath towels were sitting in the child's seat.
She also questions us where the batteries are. XD Which I find hilarious because when most people check receipts they just line it with their high lighter, and don't even look into the cart! Especially if they're bagged. She's asking for items we bought like we stole them.
She takes the cart and pulls it through the sensors and nothing goes off, and she looks at us like we're criminals, as we kept telling her, that "Hey we don't need bags because we bought some storage containers for the house and we can just put all the things we bought into there." She didn't believe us. Then she grimaced at us "WHAT IS THIS SUIT 3 PIECE!?" I was like. "Oh, those are the hangers, look it says SUIT. HANGERS."
All that trouble because we have a receipt and we opted not to bag anything. Never questioned when you have things bagged. Questioned for 10 minutes for not bagging anything.
And that is my story, because being Eco-friendly is so suspicious!

Lol
I'm pretty sure those people have no real right to stop anyone and pester them, no matter where you live. You could have just smiled, said "thank you", and walked away (really fun to do).
If it were some big dude, I would have stayed and humored the store, but unless I'm worried they'll tackle me, I just ignore them. I usually have to catch a bus anyways.

(1) Yes, there are goons who work for Wal-mart. I got stopped so many times that I no longer go there. Try bringing in your cloth bags sometime. Security will follow you around the store. rolleyes
(2) Rilsin-b is correct. I have worked a security job before, Target actually. The employees may NOT touch you or stand in your walk path. They can only ask to see your receipt. Should you say no, then they can do NOTHING. smile If you have time, let them harrass you, prove you are innocent and then make a big stink to the store manager (or higher) until you get a gift card out of it.

Actually, it is completely legal for them to stop people and hold them if they are suspected of shoplifting. That being said, most stores have a store policy telling employees not to detain shoplifters. The reason is potential liability if anyone is hurt. I just quickly Googled the statute so that anyone interested can read it. What came up right off the bat is from Utah, but I know Texas has something very similar. LinkReceipt checkers annoy me. I feel like telling them, "You're cashier JUST rang me up! If you had been standing 10 feet from where you are now, you could have watched!"

Key phrase: "who has reason to believe" Not just "We make everyone stand here just to MAKE SURE they haven't stolen something", but "we have an actual reason to think you stole something" In many places, the law states that they cannot forcibly detain you unless they witnessed you taking something on camera, and you never left the view of their cameras while within the store. The exception may be trained and certified security guards, who have a lot more power than minimum wage semi-retired old ladies with a highlighter and a superiority complex razz There have been many cases of overzealous shop owners or workers injuring people who did not take anything, and so even if there is no specific law regarding it, usually there are court precedents.

Don't you love how lawmakers tend to use vague language? The word reason can mean so many different things. For example, someone might interpret it to mean that you do not have a receipt for your purchases, or that a person is walking out of a store with merchandise but no bags, since someone may think that the person has no bags because they did not go through the line to receive bags. I worked for a company where we were not allowed to give out bags unless someone made a purchase because there had been problems with shoplifters putting stuff in bags they had asked for and walking out of stores like they had paid for the stuff. The real problem is the shoplifters who have made storekeepers suspicious of everything and life difficult for the rest of us.

I'll let you in on a secret:
Stores that have NEVER had a theft, are JUST as suspicious as those who lose millions a year from it.
My boyfriend's last job, nothing ever went missing (he knows, he did the stock number checking), and the bosses still insisted on putting up cameras, and literally sitting at home on their day off watching their employees in realtime (lol illegal btw. And they called every time someone went to the bathroom to ask where they were, creepy!), AND watching every single second of footage. Every second. While they were working, they were catching up on missed footage in their office.

I am currently working as a security guard and I cannot check anyone's bag unless if I physically catch them in the act. I hate having to stalk people around a store. They know i'm there. Gah, I hate my job gonk

Firstly, that is the sweetest thing in the world taking your brother college shopping <3 <3 Makes me miss my baby brother even more.
Second, that lady is dumb. I always try to avoid bags, usually I bring my back pack and the lady at the store down the street doesn't even try to bag my stuff anymore because I'm always like "I have my backpack! No bag needed!" But my boyfriend hates it when I bring my backpack places because he says it makes me look suspicious. Apparently when we went to target they were following us around thinking I was stealing.

Every now and then (when I remember) I bring my reusable walmart shopping bag, but when I do forget, I do take the plastic bags to reuse for other things, such as for cleaning the cat litter or picking up doggie poop (I'm a dog walker and pet sitter as a full-time job) like how I reuse newspaper bags for the same purpose.
But every now and then in those super fancy neighborhoods where I walk dogs, I get eyed at for reusing the bags instead of buying the fancy poopie bags. People are ridiculous!

Haha, why would you ever buy something to put your pet's poop in? Ridiculous! I don't understand it myself but those who have the money and aren't effected by the economy usually prefer to spend their money on some of the most ridiculous things for their pets; as they say, 'I only want the best for my pet!', though sometimes the 'best' can be substituted for cheaper and eco-friendly alternatives, so when I go to client's homes and bring in their newspapers, I'll just take their newspaper bags since they would have me throw them away otherwise and can afford their own special poopie bags, and I'll reuse them for someone else's pet. ^^

Un fortunately, I work at Wal~Mart...those d*** people greeters annoy the hell out of me. They even try to get my receipt..they fail, but they still try.
My fave, though, is when they're 10 ft from the register, they see you pay for your purchases and still they demand to see your receipt. I always tell them "no" and walk on.

EVER hearrrrrr of theives? YES they exist, now any theif can invent ANY lie, coreect?
So they were suspicious for a reason, but also why they check recipts is wo when peopel go to return an item they have a bag and can't just wlak in with a receipt and be like 'we bought this' so they had to take a bag, and they have to mark receipts. Blame society and theives if anything.
Or just society because theivery is promoted from society, though some well off people do steal still.

I work in a grocery store. Even when we know and saw someone steal, we as clerks and stock handlers are discouraged from ever approaching a possible shoplifter, as someone else said, due to liability issues. We have trained security staff, but they are only around some of the time, and employees obviously can't know the security schedule because they could circumvent the security staff themselves or with accomplices if they knew when nobody would be "looking." Although I have to say the only time I was ever stopped, I actually was shoplifting, haha. I usually do have a heavy backpack loaded with stuff like books and papers or my work uniform, and I guess it can attract attention but in my experience as long as you continue wearing it, most people will ignore it. If they see you taking it off or putting it back on, they will assume you are a thief in the making, not heaven forbid, a person with a sweaty back from wearing a bag in a hot store. :/

You don't know the hatred you hath stirred in my belly for this particular type of person in the retail sector. ;w; Goddamn menopausal gossiping old hags with nothing better to do than think about how they must be the new Barack Obama or something for telling off some twenty year old about how to wrap a sandwich "properly" as if I was some kind of doddering old ninny like they are, too set in my ways to see an innovation for what it is, or accept that people can have different working styles in one environment and not everyone has to do everything the same. It is frustrating to hold your tongue with a sixty year old woman who acts like you're a dog that just s**t on her high heels or something just for doing something everyone at work does a different way. Swear to god, why don't these old cranks just give it up and keel over already, all they live for is a grocery store that they only whine about all the time anyways. :/
