Alata sniffed the air, tossing her mane slightly as the scent of water reached her nostrils. Ah, at last! she thought to herself, picking up her feet daintily, every move graceful and ladylike. She moved with a slower pace, though very regal in her bearing. She crested a small hill and the pond came into view, her eyes widening appreciatively. Her front hooves touched into the water and her webbed tail flicked in anticipation as she slowly started wading into the pond, rather oblivious to the rest of her surroundings in her simple joy if being in the water.

User Image Dark Tide was chest deep in a nearby part of the pond. His view was sheltered by overenthusiastic plant life. His hooves squelched in the mud as he observed the various fish that swirled in an aquatic dance around him. His ears pricked as he heard a quiet splash, he craned his neck to see but the plants blocked his way. He didn't want to startle whoever it was so he held very still. Hopefully his hooves wouldn't sink to far into the mud, or he would be stuck for a while here. His ears scanned the area as they pivoted around.

She waded in up to her withers then, with a strong push of her tail, surged elegantly forward, using her tail as a rudder. It was very well designed for this task, and she moved almost effortlessly through the water. somewhat amused as the fish fled at her approach, feeling at one with the water and enjoying the caresses of the aquatic plants as she moved by them.

She suddenly had the feeling of not being alone, that odd feeling you get when eyes are following you and you don't know to whom they belong. Raising her head slightly in alarm, her ears flicked in multiple directions, trying to find the source of her discomfort. She relaxed marginally as a black and white splattered stallion came into view as a bit of vegetation floated past and nickered a greeting to him as she slowly approached, taking her wonderful, elegant time.

Dark Tide waited and the oddest looking mare came into view. She was a beautiful blue color with a violet mane and a kind of tail he had never seen before. It seemed as though it was designed for water, and he liked that, his own tail just floated languorously along behind him, it was very unhelpful with swimming and took forever to dry. He nickered back at her in greeting. " Hello, I see I'm not the only one who likes a good morning swim." he said, happy to have some company. "My name is Dark Tide Ma'am. May I ask yours?"

Alata she offered simply, voice soft and rather musical, though she had only uttered a single word. Dark Tide, hmm? She studied his hide a moment - the contrasting colors were interesting to her, and she was sure it would take forever for her to find all of the interesting patches of color. Ah, yes, any time is a wonderful time for a swim, as long as the waters are calm she said with a slight bob of her head to emphasize her statement. She was distracted as a curious fish nibbled at one of the fins on her leg and she stamped her hoof, sending up a small cloud of sediment and the fish scattering. She seemed easily distracted by just about anything, but meant no offense to the stallion that she was sharing the pond with.

Tide laughed a bit as some of the fish came and hid behind his legs. He hadn't moved for a while and they were used to his presence. "What do you expect?" he asked them, "No nibbling," he said, guessing at what had happened. "That is a pretty name. Your tail appears to be rather useful, wish mine was like that. Its more of a hindrance in the water than a help." he smiled. He felt a mischievous fish pulling at his long tail. "It also helps if the water is not too cold."

She glanced rather curiously at his tail and nodded at his admittance that it was a bit of a hindrance in the water. It seemed like it would be more of a dead weight. In the water, it's wonderful, but once I'm on land, it dries out and itches horribly she explained, giving it a twitch without much thought to keep the fishes away much as her more normal counterparts would twitch away flies. He seemed rather nice, and was certainly full of compliments. Your tail must take forever to dry she remarked, not meaning any insult, but not the most socially adept mare one could find. She spent most of her time near the water, so she didn't have a herd to speak of and spent a lot of her time alone. She couldn't go too far inland because her tail and the fins on the back of her legs would dry and hurt something awful.

"It does take forever to dry." he said," In fact its rather annoying when it is wet. However it does not itch when it is dry so that is a bonus." he said, watching the fish tug at his tail. "You must not stray from water very much huh?" he asked. " I can't believe I have never seen you before, I live right by Sandar Lake." he said. " Have you ever tried a salve on your tail?" he asked. "I've heard they help with itchy skin." He swished his tail to dislodge the fish. "Pardon me I have a fish stuck in my tail" he walked a little, freeing the fish from the black strands.

Sandar Lake? she asked, having never known her dam, and therefore not having been taught the proper names for many of the region's features. There was "the pond with the lillies", "the lake with the good grazing" and other such descriptions, and that was how she referred to her world. No, I stay close to water, and have no one to apply a salve for me, if I would obtain one she said, not sounding sad in the least, but merely practical. She could hardly apply a salve to all four of her own legs and her tail, and so she was limited to being within ten to twenty minutes' distance from water. She gave a nasally chuckle at the fish stuck in his tail, the nibbly creatures leaving her alone for the moment.

"If you really needed to go somewhere I could help with the salve." he said "although my nose would get rather sticky" he scrunched up said nose at the prospect. " Sandar Lake is the largest body of water on the floating isle, if you have seen it, you will know which one I'm talking about. It is much colder than this pool." he said. "But still pleasant to swim in if you avoid the swampy bits." he smiled, he loved to talk about water. "So if you can't stray far from the water without itching, can I be reasonably sure I could find you here again?" he asked hopefully. He hadn't met anyone else who liked water this much.

Alata shook her head slightly - she doubt she'd have anywhere to go, as all of the places she frequented were near the water by necessity. Nothing had sufficiently taken her interest for her to try and leave the water - it was normally peaceful here, except for brief periods while herds or other animals came to drink. I do not believe I have been to this Sandar Lake yet she said, not recalling any superbly large bodies of water as of yet. Maybe she would follow the river north to its headwaters and see this supposed lake.

This exact place? I do not know. But I will always be along one of the rivers she added. She didn't like staying in one place overlong, as most herds were migratory and to stay in the same place went against her nature, mutated as she may be. She wasn't sure how she felt about colder swimming waters. She enjoyed fighting the rush of the river on occasion, the cold adding to the challenge, but for a leisurely swim, she wasn't sure it would be what she preferred. The shallower pools stayed warmer by nature. I may head north, see if I can find this lake of yours she added, if he truly wished to find her again.

"Thank you ma'am, If you should happen to see a large bull pine along the shore, that is where my herd resides." he was happy at the prospect of seeing this mare again. She was a very interesting creature, he wondered where she had come from? Did one of her parents also have that tail? And what exactly was that star shaped thing on her but? He splooshed a little water at her and grinned.

He hoped to find a mate one day who also enjoyed water. There was nothing better than taking a deep soak on a hot day. He sighed in relaxation. His tail sinking down into the water again.

Alata nodded gracefully at his comment about the bull pine. She'd have to keep that in mind. Some water plants were slowly passing her by and she delicately nipped one with her teeth, chomping on it in a very lady-like fashion.

You are lucky to be able to have a herd she commented. She hadn't found anyone that was willing to stay only around water for any length of time, and she couldn't blame them, not if they were normal. She was definitely a special creature, that much she knew. This stallion seemed to enjoy the water, but he already belonged to a group, and she wouldn't presume to separate him from them. And, while he was pleasant, she really didn't know what to look for in a mate, and the entire idea was rather confusing to her.

"Yes I suppose I am." he said. His brows furrowed as he thought. "Do you sleep on land or in the water?" he asked curiously. "There is plenty of land under the tree if you care to join us, we are very close to the water. If not know that the offer is always good." Tide pulled up a large clump of water plants and proceeded to munch them while he got mud splattered on his chest from the webby roots.

"Oh these are rather good arn't they, they are much less prickly than the land plants."
