What he really, really wanted was a hazelnut soy latte. But commercial stores didn't carry organic flavour syrups. If he was going to get back into practice and back on a ...well, more strict of a diet than he was currently following for the school year, he'd have to forgo the extra sweeteners and chemicals that flavour shots afforded. Really caffeine wasn't at the top of the approved list, but he was feeling a little more tired today than usual with having moved all the boxes and furniture for his mother into her new place.

Just a plain latte, then, using soy milk. But what size?

He grabbed the handle of the right door, noting only that someone was exiting out the one that would be on his left (their right). He swung it open, turning his shoulders a little to try to leave room (not enough!) for another person passing out, but-

Talia was in the mood for coffee today. Well no, she hated coffee- the stuff was too dark and smelled like garbage, but she was in the mood for it nonetheless. In the mood meaning in the mood to carry it around to make herself look more official and businesslike. After all, carrying around a soda doesn't really scream "sophistication."

So she had decided to stop by the local coffee shop to pick up her infamous cup of joe. She had politely ordered the drink and payed and what not like everyone else. Buying a cup of coffee wasn't exactly ... unique.

Happily Talia had been walking out the door, when someone texted her. She reached down into her purse and grabbed her phone. It was a simple message, but required her utter attention of course. After all, communication was everything.

Unfortunately though, the text blocked her sight. A hulking mass was walking in the door at the same time she was trying to leave out of it- and we all know how this story goes.

In one solid movement, Talia whacked her head on the door, dropped her drink and sent her message. She clattered to the ground- Bjorn wasn't exactly a gentle fellow, even with doors. At least she wasn't in a skirt of a dress.

The coffee soon began to flow out of the cup and splash all over, including on her clothes. At first, like any normal person, she was pissed. Without even looking up she scolded, "Hey bozo, what the he-"

When she did look up she was greeted with a welcome sight. It was a boy ... maybe a man? He looked like he was in college or so, and he was ... masculine. Talia stopped mid-sentence and looked back down blushing. She couldn't help it, he was so big and muscular- the exact thing she was attracted to.

He immediately crouched, letting the door he'd opened rest against his hip and holding the other open and from bopping into the poor girl with a hand.

"Miss! I am so sorry! It is a fault of mine, I should have been more careful. Your clothes..." He used his one free hand to turn up the dumping drink. It would be no good for drinking probably, but at least half wouldn't be soaking into her on the ground.

"May I help you up? The coffee...it is everywhere. They will have napkins inside. I can buy you another.." He offered his hand down, still holding the doors open.

His brow was furrowed, concern honest and plain as summer rain, "but...your shirt and pants. I do not know. Maybe a hand dryer in the ladies room after a rinse."

He was so cute. HE WAS SO CUTE. The way he was getting all concerned over a spilled drink was just ... so cute! If Talia wasn't completely starstruck by the muscles, his politely princely manners absolutely did her in. His hair was a bit ... long for her tastes, but that was nothing to complain about.

Oh yeah, too bad he was in college. Maybe with luck he was a freshman? Didn't seem like it though, he was way too big for that. Still, a little harmless flirting never hurt.

Her face finally reached a normal temperature, so she stood up and brushed herself on. Still not wanting to look at the boy (for fear that she'd stare) Talia continued to keep herself busy looking down at her clothes. At least she was in black jeans, so those wouldnt be too hard to clean. The shirt however ... it was a light color so it was probably stained. Luckily it was one of those cheap old navy tank tops. Always looking on the bright side, Talia was happy that it hadn't gotten on her jacket. That would have horrified her. Good leather was so hard to come by.

Some might have found Bjorn's constant apologizing annoying, but Talia found it nothing but adorable. Smiling, she put a finger to his lip and said, "Another drink ... would be lovely." She said it with a smile, not meaning it in any cruel way.

With that, she reached out and took his hand, pulling herself up. His hand was so big it could probably fit two of hers in it. It was warm though, which was always nice. Cold hands were just awkward.

At first he thought her anger must be catching her tongue, especially given what words had managed to make it out. Better not to hear the rest, and keep the air clean?

But when she finally looked up, and stopped his mouth with a single gesture, he reconsidered. Here was something more of a wildfire, easy to switch paths and make the firemen have to panic and chase. He gave a relieved nod, and this time held the door for her.

If she had made up her mind not to be angry...and...a very forward acceptance of apology, then he would not pass up the opportunity in letting her proceed him to the counter to check out the look of those black jeans. Reaching the counter himself, "Whatever she would like, the order is together."

He waited until after she was done before approaching conversation as her drink was put together. "It is lucky for me you are not too pressed for time. Is your phone alright? I promise I'm not in the habit of throwing glass walls into others. I'm actually quite tame."

If he could earn a laugh, then all would be looking up and in the clear. She had such striking eyes, like how lacquered flowers burned with false light on olive-painted wood. "Most of the time, anyway. I'm Björn."

Talia smiled as he pulled her up. Pulled her up very quickly she might add. Looks like those muscles weren't just for show. You wouldn't see her complaining though. Muscles were hot.

She was definitely getting to the counter first. Instead of getting coffee this time though, she was going to buy a frappuccino. After all, you couldn't look very sophisticated in a stained shirt- and something cold would cool down her face. She asked the man at the counter for her drink with a sort of embarrassed look- considering she had just ordered, it was a bit awkward. He looked at her with a smile and pity though- he was nice at least. Talia winked at him in a friendly way, not meaning anything by it. In return, the man at the counter gave a little smile, as if to say "well okay then."

Björn quickly joined her side again and ordered his drink. The man at the counter looked a little pale and intimidated by the hulking mass standing next to her- maybe he thought Björn was with her? Talia couldn't help but let out a giggle at her own thoughts.

The college boy started talking though, so she quickly composed herself to look at him again. This time she actually looked at his face without blushing in embarrassment so she could actually examine it. Most of the time she didn't like facial hair on guys, but with him it was somehow ... fitting? She noticed he had a bit of an ... it wasn't an accent it was more like ... an odd way of talking? She couldn't help but smile at him with the way he was apologizing so much. "Björn," she said, proud to be on a name basis with him, "My phone is fine and so am I. There's not need to be so apologetic!"

Tame? This boy? No. Never. She laughed and said, "I'm the one who should be apologizing anyway. Texting is dangerous!" She let out another cascade of bell-like laughter. Holding out her hand, she said, "I'm Talia, nice to meetcha."

He took her hand with practiced caution; a firm handshake for business deals was superb, but if you caused pain it was a sign of lack of control. He didn't mind showing the same respect in shaking a woman's hand equal as a man's.

"You have a beautiful laugh, " He smiled. "There is a lot of music in it."

"I read in the news that a lot of states were considering formally outlawing texting while driving. Even I can figure out why that would be dangerous. Maybe they should consider it for sidewalks too, with trucks like me around."

He retrieved her drink from the finished stand and offered it too her while he put a few dollars into the tip jar. His own was only a moment after. "Truly though, are you busy? It would be sad not earn a few more laughs." He motioned towards the sitting area, more specifically the plush sofa and adjacent lounge chairs instead of the cafe tables and seats. Those flimsy things would do him no favors. Well, falling on his butt on the floor on a bent chair might earn laughs. Still, he'd rather not.

"Are you local? I just moved to town, myself."

Talia's eyes looked at the ground with the boy's compliment like the floor had just become the most interesting thing in the world. It was one thing to be told a compliment like "your hair is cute" or "that phone's so awesome!" but another entirely for something to be called beautiful. Needless to say, Talia's face was bright red, and she didn't exactly want to embarrass herself right off the bat.

It really was too bad he was so much older than her.

Talia stared at him like he had just said Jesus had returned and was walking around downtown. "They're going to ban texting in certain places?!" she gasped. Talia realized how ignorant she sounded and said, "I ... I mean that makes sense, but ... I can't even imagine it!" She laughed as if she was joking about the whole matter, but internally Talia was a wreck. She was the type who was constantly texting!

With her signature Talia smile, she said, "No no, I'm not busy at all. To talk would be lovely!" Truthfully, Talia had intended on going down to the courts at the park to swing at a few balls, but that could certainly wait now!

Talia noticed how he was gesturing towards the couch and immediately threw herself on one of the ends. Sitting in the middle of couches always bothered her. "I've lived here all my life." Unfortunately, she added mentally. "Where are you from Björn?" Though Talia could already guess he was probably from somewhere in Europe- his name sort of gave that one away. She felt so proud for sleuthing that out on her own.

"From the Tri-state area, called North Hills." He took the lounge chair that faced the sofa, scooting it forward with a push from his foot so that it was closer to conversational distance. "But I've been lucky to spend summers with my family in Norway and Sweden."

It was an explanation he was used to giving, accounting to teachers why his language arts skills were abysmal. Or would that make it an excuse, since it was meant as a front to avoid paying more effort? Probably the latter.

"If you ever get a chance, you should tour Stockholm sometime. Have you been overseas? You have the composure of a traveler."

She really was rolling with the flow well. "I've been trying to get the flow of life here, how people act, where they go...what they value. It isn't an easy city to learn. It's pretty diverse."

Honestly, Talia was a little disappointed that the strapping boy hadn't sat on the same couch as her, but hey- beggars couldn't be choosers, right?

Talia's surprise simply couldn't be hidden from her face. She dun goof'd.

"You're from the U.S.? I could've sworn you were from out of the country ... I mean I guess that frequent trips explain that but I mean uhm ..." She coughed to clear the air, and to stop herself from babbling, but her face was bright red. Moving on, she simply said, "Ah ... never been out of the country." Rather mysteriously, she added, "We used to take family trips to Hawaii if that counts ... but we don't go on those anymore."

Sighing, Talia took a sip to clear her head. A conversation with a cute boy she just met wasn't the best place to start talking about her complicated family issues.

Changing the subject, she said, "Really? I think Destiny City is pretty ..." She was about to say tame, but she thought about all the recent terrorist attacks (which she now knew as senshi and negaverse battles) and all the ruckus that went on between the two factions. "Well I guess it is a bit difficult," she finished, shaking her head.

With a coy smile, she added, "Can't be too difficult to adjust though. Do you live alone or in a dorm? An apartment maybe?" God forbid he live with his mother still. That would just be unfortunate for a college boy (which Talia still assumed he was).

He smiled, " My mother was born overseas. Much of my family knows English, but when we are together, I only speak Norsk and Svenska. It has hurt my English. "

He admitted the last with no shame. It was work speaking, reading, and writing in three languages. He would like to see other high school students claim as much when they had the brain of a potato like he did.

"Oh, it is pretty. Many parks, lovely architecture. Every corner, curve and edge fair like statues. Like paintings hung in museum halls. " he gave a slow, slight dip of his head in a gesture like reverence, closing his eyes during it with deliberate purpose. One given a fair maiden by passing admirer in days long passed.

"I'm soon to move into the dorms of my new school. It has a bit of a reputation. I do too, now, so maybe it and I fit each other. Hillworth Grammar School. It looks harsh from the outside, maybe like Soviets inside? "

"Are you enrolled in one of the schools here? One of the Universities? " He couldn't exactly tell, since she looked young, and was small. Everyone was small. But it was good to err always on the young side, and make a question a compliment of how a woman was fresh faced. Also, honor their intelligence.

"Where was she born?" Talia said, smiling. She wasn't about to ask what Norsk and Svenska was- she didn't want to look dumb! "Oh I don't think it's hurt it as much as you think," she added, "Your English is lovely." She smiled with genuine truth. He really wasn't that bad at speaking. Maybe the tone and grammar structure weren't spit spot, but they weren't horrible.

Talia could tell he really loved his homeland though. The way he talked about it made it sound magical, though some part of Talia's mind told her it couldn't be that way. No place on Earth was that nice. "It sounds absolutely beautiful, Björn," she said lightly, so as to not interrupt his obvious fantasizing.

Talia just about flipped over the couch with surprise at his next comment though. "H-hillworth?! How old are you!" she exclaimed. It simply wasn't believable that a guy that huge could really be going to a high school. Realizing she was being a tad rude, she added, "Ah, I'm sorry." She hung her head a bit, "I didn't mean to sound so uhm ... surprised ... or rude." She was mumbling now in embarrassment. He must've been playing a mean joke on her, he just had to be.

It was funny, you think she wouldn't be concerned with size mistaking considering she was actually rather small for her age. Attempting to change the subject, she said, "I ... I go to uhm Crystal Academy. It's the big school on the hill in the north side, you can't miss it."

"Trondheim, in Norway."

He shook his head gently at her panic, "I look older, but I am only 16. I'm enrolling as a junior this semester. It's supposed to be very structured, and have a pretty harsh academics course...good for getting boys in line."

He lifted his palm up as if a shrug, "We'll see how it goes, right? Crystal Academy...it is a girl's school?"

That was about the extent of his knowledge on it. The name had come up in his mother's search for schools, and that was the reason that took it out of consideration.

"Do you like it there? I don't know much about it's reputation or programs."

Sixteen.

He was six freaking teen.

Talia could've done a backflip with happiness. If he was sixteen, she didn't feel like a complete freak about flirting with him! In fact, he was younger than her. This was ridiculous.

Coming back to reality she said, "Sorry, I shouldn'tve reacted that way, it was rude. It's just with your size ... I mean you're ..." Talia's face went red with embarrassment and she covered it with both of her manicured little hands.

Trying to cover up her blunder, Talia said, "Hillsworth... well I'm sorry you have to go to that sorry excuse for a school." Even if she tried not to be rude, there was just no two ways around it. Hillsworth was a crappy school. "I don't mean to sound judgemental, but all of the boys there are ... well they're not very ..." She paused to think of the right word for it. "Well they've got quite a few problems most of the time."

She smiled sincerely and said, "But I don't think you're like that at all. You're very nice." She blushed with the words. It was embarrassing complimenting someone you'd barely met! Of course, it seemed like the boy had no problem with that. He'd already done it quite a few times.

"It's not like Crystal," she continued. "Our school is ... well private for starters. Lot's of the girls there are a bit stuck up, but I hope I'm not coming off that way ..." She laughed once again and said, "Though I suppose with all my reprimanding of Hillsworth, I probably come off that way!"

Her fumbling about his appearance was sweet and endearing. If she had a boyfriend, he felt sorry for the poor guy now. Expectations on his level of fitness may have just increased. Maybe that was a good thing. Magazines were always saying how women had a lot of expectations placed on them about appearances. Why not men too? At least it would mean that looking around would be a lot less unpleasant and one-sided.

The tone behind the apologies, and the lack of actual wording was more expressive than the turn of phrase 'quite a few problems.' What would she have said if she weren't being polite? He couldn't guess at it, but the dislike was plain enough. But he wasn't sure how being public or private would affect whether a school was any good or not. And if girls there were stuck up, what was so great about it? Did they have very good academics? What about sports? She didn't go into how the two were unalike, leaving a vague....but very polite conversation trail. It turned back to herself, and whether she was stuck up or not, bringing him out of his considerations, "You haven't said anything stuck up. Saying the truth about something isn't a bad thing to me. It is school that takes boys with records, so they must have their share of problems. "

"Are there many ...clubs at Crystal? Most schools only have sports, but maybe if it is private you get better options....like painting and art clubs, or a theater club separate from a choral program? Are you part of any extra studies? A girl who texts so much and keeps up with communication would be a big asset to a lot of activities." His old school had put on school musicals, but they were always part of the choral program, not a thing in their own right. He wasn't sure what expensive activities a lot of money would allow for students. Paints were about the most expensive thing he could come up with. What else did people do for hobbies? Ride horses? But he'd never heard of horse clubs in a school, or of what one did with horses other than get on their backs, so it was a mystery and seemed implausible. Besides, here was an expert on the subject of what went on at private schools and what they did with their time. Right from the horse's mouth! Well...but she was prettier than a horse and he would never, ever call a girl that.
