While he may lack social grace, tact, and find your struggles amusing, Ashel has no true hatred for people or things, (with a few exceptions, those being higher level crimes, betrayal of trust, causing true lasting harm). His nature is to assist and aid people, and help them after they fail on their own. While he may chuckle at someone falling down, he is the type of person to go right to that person and offer them a hand up. He genuinely wants to do more good in the world, but it takes him a while to do it, seeing as he lets the world run it's course and nature work at it's own pace. He sees the glass as shaken, but still half full.

Ashel sees time as a sort of abstract quality. Nothing truly needing great concern over. Natural emotions and accidents are a part of life, and to fight what he sees a inevitable is rather a waste of energy that could be better spent. This is why he often won't form grudges, doesn't carry hate, and is a rather lazy look about him. It isn't that is his lazy, it just is that he is slow and takes time with things, preferring to not be rushed. Everything happens for a reason, pieces of a puzzle will all fall into place with time. Why rush the inevitable? Take a deep breath, and just enjoy life is how Ashel views the world around him. Deadlines, jobs, all is worked on in pace, as time crunces down he'll speed up his work but he's rather inept at always meeting the deadlines. He knows he's not speedy, and while he does work to get it done on time, if he can't, then he can't. However, he will always provide the best he can in the time he has. His ideal environment is one where the deadline is as flexible as he is.

While most view honestly as a virtue, Ashel's honesty comes at a price, that price being his honesty is blunt and lacks the typical softener that normal empathy would provide. It isn't that he lacks empathy, he lacks social tact. He lacks the ability to hide his amusement at other's mistakes. He lacks social grace, making his honest opinions both good and bad.

Ashel avoids confrontations and prefers to be the watcher, never the instigator or aggressor. He avoids taking charge or stances on subjects that would place him in positions of confrontation and aggression. He wants to be a people-pleaser, but often fumbles over himself due to inability to have social grace and tact. He can be conned or bullied into things and will do them to the best of his abilities, but sighs when he realizes he's has all but gotten himself into the position to start with. When he is challenged he will make apologies and genuinely desire to set things right with the offended party. If that isn't enough well...he wouldn't really know what to do with himself.

Ashel lives in the agricultural hub, he lives with the farmers, the ones who don't put on airs generally and aren't that deeply involved with city politics and posh and prim. As he goes up on his occasional trips to just explore or people watch, he finds he is a bit of an awkward outsider. His lack of social tact and his general ignorance of just when he oversteps social boundaries, (such as topic choices, eating habits, remarking on actions or looks) leave Ashel to stumble about with little grace outside of his normal circle. While this is most apparent in the classes, it also happens with his peers though not to such jarring extremes. He just sucks at reading people, even after watching them interact for hours on end. Over time he can and will pick up cues and become more aware of his position and that of others but like his work, it's just a rather languid pace.
Thoughts on the Forest:
The origins of him and the other Book Children, Ashel thinks the forest itself as a lingering afterthought, something that is going to eventually consume but not for a great long time. By then, they will know more, have grown as well, and as stands it is not his concern. Plus people go there to die, he's not very keen on wanting to examine something so closely related to death...and his own birth.
Thoughts of Book Children:
His distant relatives. They're not related by any means, but it doesn't mean they don't share a common thread as being born outside.
Thoughts on City People:
In a small lingering way Ashel does somewhat feel like an outsider and interloper towards the City People. He is a foreigner, born from the place they go to die. For the most part they welcome him, and for that, for those of the city, he feels at peace.
