This week had been hell for Chase, it had been so rough that he buried himself in the work his father had laid thickly upon him. He didn't care, in fact it was comforting to spend hours upon hours scribbling away at the papers, going through them one at a time mechanically. It wasn't fun by any means, but it was a distraction and that was what he needed.
But even he had his limits and it was late into the night that he finally reached it.
No longer could he strain his eyes staring at the black ink on the white page. So he chose to do his next favorite distraction. Go to the bar and get drunk, only tonight he had decided that he wanted a drinking partner, so he shot Jack a text asking him to meet him outside of his favorite bar.
He stood outside, near the bouncer glancing at his watch as he impatiently awaited his friend's arrival.

At seventeen, Jack wasn't even old enough to vote. Never mind getting into bars. But that didn't stop him from trying. He was clean shaven and fresh faced, but tall and filled out in ways that most boys his age simply weren't. Usually, it was enough to come armed with his fake ID, and to lower his voice just a tad.
"Hey, buddy," Jack drawled breezily out of the corner of his mouth, and swept his arm casually around Chase's shoulders. "Long time no see."
The first time Jack had met Chase, it was as Proustite. And he hadn't done a thing to keep the other Lieutenant from getting his face smashed in by a crazy sailor scout. Of course, Labyrinthite hadn't really need his help.
But it was the principle of the matter. Jack was glad Chase didn't hold it against him.
"Shall we?" He gestured grandly at the building in front of them, as though it were a prestigious establishment and not a bar about to let a pair of teenagers through its doors.

At first glance Chase seemed annoyed that it had taken Jack so long to arrive but the expression seemed to melt away quickly when the edges of his lips curled upwards in a smile. "About time you got here," he said slapping a hand on the other boy's shoulder. "Thought you were gonna keep me waiting all night," he teased squeezing Jack's shoulder as he turned to the bouncer.
"We shall," he replied pulling his hand away and strolling up to the bouncer who knew him all too well. "Hey Johnny, my friend finally got his butt over," he said pointing his thumb over his shoulder at the boy. He grinned broadly as the man looked him once over and shrugged allowing the boys into the club. He knew Chase well and knew that Chase was a smart kid who'd take care of himself.
"So," Chase began carefully chewing on his words. "Kaia dumped me."

During nights out like this Jack was used to being turned away from at least three bars before finding one fool enough to let him inside. There were a couple that he could usually count on-- bouncers could be bought, or baited, or bribed. But he'd never had Chase's good fortune. Most bouncers had little interest in befriending Jack.
"Wow," he murmured under his breath, clearly impressed, and gazed over his shoulder at the man called Johnny. "Dude. Do you know that guy? He didn't even ask to see my ID!"
Jack was feeling very good about himself, and looking forward to the evening. He sauntered into the lounge alongside Chase, grinning broadly, and was only half listening when the other boy made his confession.
The other half of him was busy scouting the room, on the look out for a nice set of legs--
"Wait, what?" Jack's head snapped in Chase's direction so fast it almost gave him whiplash, "Kaia dumped ********. This meant he was probably going to be paying for the drinks.

"Yeah, Johnny and I go way back," he replied waving a hand like it was no big deal. "Got reacquainted these last couple of month, been spending a ton time here and at a couple other bars to, uh, help cope with some stress," he explained with a shrug not thinking it was too big of a deal. Of course Chase had always been good at smooth talking his way into things.
Chase frowned when Jack finally realized what he had just said. "Yeah," he replied slowly wasting no time in finding an empty table and chairs before sinking down. "Just, uh, couple days ago," he sighed leaning forward, propping his elbows up on his knees. He rubbed his face with a hand before grabbing one of the lamented drink menus.
"She showed up at my apartment on a bad night, my dad was over and he," he paused the memory of the night flickering through his mind. It wasn't likely that he'd forget it. "He wasn't happy, said some stuff about Kaia when she was just outside the door," he stopped. It was hard trying to explain everything. "Anyway, she left. Couldn't get a hold of her for days, when she finally contacted me," he trailed off shrugging as he looked up to see a waitress coming their way.
"Oh hey Chase," the blonde woman sad offering him a flirty smile. She looked at Jack batting her eyes, "Oooh you brought a cute friend. Should I get you your usual?" She asked glancing back at the pink haired boy. He nodded and she turned to Jack. "What can I get for you sweetie?"

Jack had never been dumped. Jack had never been in any sort of relationship where being dumped was something he had to worry about. Ladies came and ladies went. Some stayed longer than others, but Jack had never felt for any of them the way Chase must have felt for Kaia. He'd never had a girlfriend.
But Jack's heart broke a little bit every morning without fail, when the poster of Marilyn Monroe on his bedroom wall refused to spring to life and return his soulful kiss.
He imagined the pain Chase must have been feeling now was not unlike that.
"Jesus, man," Jack sighed, and sank easily down onto his chair across from Chase. He watched his friend, brown eye's playing over the other's tired expression, and wondered what to say. If Chase were a lady, Jack might have reached across the table and given his hand a comforting squeeze. But Chase was a he-- a bro, and Jack was about as interested in getting in his pants as he was becoming a priest.
"That's… rough."
The waitress's arrival, and her batting eyelashes, temporarily distracted Jack from Chase's troubles. He smiled at her, and those pearly whites dazzled in the low light of the bar.
"A caesar," Jack said, voice radiating with a sort of confidence that suggested he'd ordered this drink a hundred times before. "And a kiss."

Chase was rarely the dumpee but when he was dumped it hardly phased him because, truthfully, he probably deserved it. He could count more than one occasion where he felt like he had purposely messed up something in the relationship because he felt suffocated and trapped within it. But his relationship with Kaia had been completely different than any other relationship he had been in. It was rare for Chase to actually fall for a girl, especially with how hard and how fast it had occurred.
In more ways that one, Chase had given Kaia everything he could offer her and in the end everything had fallen apart. His chest ached whenever he thought about her and as much as he wanted to never talk about it or think about it, he needed to talk to someone about it. It was the reason he called Jack, he desperately needed a companion he could confide in.
"Yeah," he sighed leaning forward, draping one arm over his knee while the other raked through his hair.
The waitress giggled, reaching over and tapping Jack's nose. "Caesar coming right up, as for that kiss," she paused pulling away and winking at the boy. "We'll see sugar," with that she walked off to fetch their drinks.
"I didn't even get a chance to explain," he shook his head. "Then again I didn't really try to explain, I mean...I guess I shut down on her," he groaned rubbing his face as he tried to explain things.
