The dog park was always a welcome, nostalgic reminder of simpler times back when Zia was more of a regular and didn't have to put these visits aside for supernatural bullshit or work bullshit or bullshit in general.

The other regulars were probably happier for it. She was a notoriously inconsiderate dog owner and the overweight mastiff mix didn't seem to know his own size when it came to tackling people, slobbering on them, and in one unfortunate lady's infamous case, when he got a little too friendly with her leg.

But today their break was at an end as Zia opened the gate and set her terror free, tossing his ball in for good measure. He really needed to run around, and after being cooped up for so long, he shot off like a torpedo. A fat, fluffy, fluffy, slobbery torpedo.

Normally she took this opportunity to get some work done while Harley roamed the dog area, but today she was actually in the mood to toss the ball around with him, and talking in baby talk whenever he brought it back or trying to keep her balance on her heels whenever he jumped up for treats or whatever other food she had in her purse.

She was one of those people. Those people who thought dogs were a superior replacement for children. And it showed... a lot.

Laika was one of those dogs who did not know the meaning of heel. Or stay. Or come or shake or even sit. Sure, she could give the appearance of understanding them, but only when she wanted to and that was generally not when on the way to the dog park. The rat terrier was all the way at her end of the leash, swiftly pulling her frazzled owner towards the fenced run while Iouri worried she was about to strangle herself.

"Laika! Chill out!" he hollered at the dog, who paid him no heed. He walked faster, but all this did was make Laika walk faster until she arrived at the gate and pawed at it, whining all the while. When Iouri finally caught up to unlatch it, she sat still for precisely how long it took him to unclasp her leash before taking off like a bottle rocket across the yard.

Iouri followed, wary that she wasn't about to pick a fight with a rottweiler (not yet, she hadn't) and shut the gate. Across the yard, Laika was bounding about randomly, seemingly ecstatic to just be outside in the fresh air with all the smells.

"You'd think I never took her out, the way she behaves," he called to the woman standing a few feet away. How embarrassing, to have a dog that behaved like an escaped prisoner.

Zia looked up at the gate opened and two more park patrons made their way in. Harley quickly lost interest in the ball and started darting towards the new dog, either to sniff new smells or play, making Zia cringe a little.

He was a good tempered dog; She'd never seem him fight, even when attacked. Most dogs were too small to do any damage and his reaction was to toy with hostile animals. That was a blessing, considering, with his size, he could definitely do damage. But if anything, he might just run over Laika and make her tumble. Usually it was the owners who made her nervous.

"I know the feeling," She called back, watching Iouri carefully to gauge his reaction at the barreling 190 pounds heading towards his terrier.

"Harley!" She called after him, hoping to at least slow him down. The dog stopped and gave her an incredulous look before continuing his pursuit. He was sometimes kind enough to oblige her 'requests', but no one made him do anything. Which was why Zia was always half prepared to chase after him and try and wrestle him back under control, pencil skirt attire and all.

Laika was too fast to be caught by a lumbering brute like Harley, and she seemed to advertise the fact, reaching the back fence and tearing off down the side of the yard.

Iouri was not particularly worried. He had been coming to this dog park long enough to know that the animals there were seldom agressive, and for anything to hurt Laika it would have to catch her first. That was challenging enough in and of itself - he knew from experience.

"They'll be fine," he laughed, noticing the young woman's expression. "Laika is quite sturdy as dogs go. And, ah..."

He watched as the terrier looped around to run behind the mastiff and yap at it. "Not particularly fearful. Or sane, for that matter." Smiling warmly, he extended a hand towards the mastiff's owner. "Iouri Spekter. And you are...?"

Lumbering brute he was, but Harley wasn't easily deterred and only stopped to hobble in a funny rotation and change direction. He had no hopes of outright catching Laika, though.

Zia's worry shifted to a much more comfortable smile at Iouri and took his hand for what was meant to be a quick shake as she introduced herself, but she ended up lingering a little too long and withdrew suddenly. "Zia," She finished his sentence and ended up breaking their brief eye contact to look back at the dogs. "I'm sorry, it's just that sometimes other owners get nervous," She said with an awkward laugh. "He... doesn't really know his size."

She cleared her throat and shifted her attention back to him. "Iouri, that's... Russian, right?" The slight accent was obviously a clue too, if not more of one, but she figured it went without saying. And it didn't hurt to ask, rather than just categorize it as generic 'Eastern European' in her head.

"Trust me," Iouri assured her, "I'm not worried about Laika." He wasn't even watching the dogs anymore, so certain was he of their safety. It wasn't that he didn't care about the dog's safety so much as they had reached an understanding that if Laika wanted to pick fights with animals eight times her size that was her problem, and she knew that since he was not going to rescue her, she was better off not doing it.

"It is," he nodded, smiling. It was always nice to meet someone with an ear for accents, rather than being mistaken for, say, Czech for the nth time. "I am from St. Petersburg originally, although it was called Leningrad when I lived there."

He was showing his age. Iouri chuckled, feeling momentarily old at 32. "Once upon a time in a mystical place called the Soviet Union, yes? Snow. Ice. Fur hats. Communism! No, really, I've lived in Destiny City since I was nine."

He hoped she liked his joke. You could never be sure when you kidded about Communism.

"Oh, good," She said with a notably relieved sigh and a grin. If he wasn't worried, she wasn't worried, and that meant she could relax.

She shifted her weight to one hip, settling in for an actual conversation as she listened to his joke and laughed. "Hey, now, I'm not that young. I was around when they changed the name to St. Petersburg," Uh, yeah. She was three, and she learned that tidbit from class, but whatever. It was actually hard to think of it that way, considering the extra years Zirconia added on. Age had become a confusing thing to put a number on the closer they got.

"At least you've still got that exotic quality," She laughed and then wondered if that suddenly made her horribly transparent. "But, I'll be honest, I just made a wild guess. Russia is a big country," Accents, especially slight accents, were things she was still learning. She'd picked it up fast; Her boss had plenty of global clients she dealt with as a proxy on multiple occasions, but even that was a limited education.

Iouri could not help but blush at being called exotic. "No, no, no," he stammered. "Exotic is for when you meet someone from Hawaii. Or Africa. Australia, even, I would think is exotic. But not Russia, I mean, unless-"

Well, he supposed some people found it exotic. His college sort-of girlfriend, for starters. Iouri could read her his shopping list, and as long as it was in Russian she would find it as attractive as the finest love poem. "Okay," he conceded, shrugging at the pretty young woman. "I guess some people are in to that kind of thing."

Physics majors with NASA aspirations, for example.

Was Zia into that kind of thing? Iouri felt immediately kind of dirty for even wondering such a thing. Although he couldn't say he wouldn't be intrigued to find out, perhaps over spaghetti and a bottle of cheap white wine in the best-hidden restaurant in Little Italy.

"What is it you do, Miss Zia?" he asked warmly.

Zia had to laugh at his protests and suddenly wished she was better at this banter thing. Would it be too awkward to come back with saying she was into that sort of thing? Probably, and she, unfortunately had a habit of staying on the safe side of these things so all that escaped was a slightly goofy tone to her laughs she could do without and some shy gnawing on her her bottom lip when she shut herself up.

"Oh, well, um," On the subject of her job she slipped a business card from Davis & Wilson Brokerage out of her purse and held it up with a grim half smile. "Evil corporation and stock market stuff," She said dryly, only half joking. It was more like an apprenticeship to learn such 'evil corporation things' anyway, but she also wanted to come off as a semi-professional adult and not the girl who fetched the Wilson in Davis & Wilson coffee and dry cleaning trying to prove she could handle being allowed in the boys' club.

Suddenly Harley's massive skull was headbutting her side and she stumbled a little bit. He'd seen her stick her hand in her purse and he'd already learned a long time ago that's where treats come from. And he wanted one. She happily obliged without thinking before turning her attention back to Iouri. "And what do you do, Mr. Spekter?"

Laika came bounding over as well, and although she did not have Harley's ability to move mountains, she was just as insistent. Iouri shrugged at the dog when she looked plaintively at him. "What?" he asked her, voice rising half an octave. "You know I don't have anything for you."

At this proclamation, Laika scooted over to Zia and groveled before her expectantly. Iouri shook his head, shamefaced over his dog who managed to have all the manners of a starving street urchin. "I really do feed her," he asserted lamely.

When his badly-mannered pet had bounded once more to the far reaches of the yard, thrilled with whatever magic Zia kept in his purse, Iouri was finally able to relax. They said chicks loved dogs, but he suspected that women only liked dogs that were well behaved, or else too young to know better. A space case like Laika was not winning him any cool points.

"I'm the operating director at the Destiny City Earth and Space Museum," Iouri said, grateful for a question to distract him from his dog's antics. "In fact! We are having an event this weekend! It's a murder mystery gala to celebrate the re-opening of the planetarium." Using worlds like gala always sounded more swank than what was basically LARP.

Zia didn't notice the bad behavior so much, or, at least, what she did notice she didn't mind. Harley wasn't exactly the most behaved animal around either and she easily melted at Laika's insistence enough to share a treat for her, too, even though it elicited some jealousy on Harley's end.

"Oh, wow," She took her attention off her brute of a dog when he said he was the director of the museum. Cultural occupations were always impressive, but there was honestly a little part of her that was also always looking for a business opportunity. Museums instantly made her mind go to grant money and tax deductions.

"Oh, a gala, hm?" Zee's mouth twisted into a wry smile recalling all of the painfully classy events where her father used to drag her around to while he dumped money into whatever cause or auction they were pimping out. But a murder mystery was a new one. "Sounds interesting," She said cautiously, and then realized she seemed to accidentally shift into some 'overly suspicious of everyone' work mode and tried to laugh it off. "Tell me more about it."

Well, he had mentioned murder. Iouri laughed off her suspicion as well, waving an arm awkwardly. "No one is actually going to be murdered," he assured her, perhaps unnecessarily. "It should just be a fun evening! Cocktails and a show, to show people that the museum is still relevant and hip. And to celebrate our new planetarium!"

Iouri was exceedingly proud of the planetarium. He'd supervised installation of the new projectors earlier this week and, he had to confess, sat in for a test run. All that was left to do before opening night was really to shampoo the carpets and take the plastic off the chairs. In fact, he was planning to do that tomorrow.

"The show is a murder mystery game. Like... Have you ever played Clue?" he asked. "There will be a -fake- murder, an investigation... wacky hijinks, yes? The winner gets a year pass to the museum."

He glanced momentarily to the dogs and back to her. "There are still a few tickets."

"Oh! No," Zia couldn't help it and ended up trying to contain some kind of giggling. God, what was she, sixteen?

"I know it's not really a real murder, it's just I'm used to associates pasting the word 'Gala' over 'Donation drive' when it comes to events. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be cynical. But your show sounds fun," She was hoping a compliment would keep the conversation from lingering too long on such a rude a assumption.

"Cocktails, murder, and hijinks... sounds like an eventful night. I might have have to come."

"You should definitely think about it!" beamed Iouri. While it was true that there was a fundraising aspect to the evening, he was not hosting it only on the basis of trying to get some extra cash for the museum. No, first and foremost Iouri just wanted to get people in the building. Once they saw what kind of remodeling he'd been working on, there was no doubt they'd come back to see the exhibits in full.

"If you decide to come," he said, "You should give me a call and I'll hold a ticket for you." He took a moment to dig a business card out of his wallet. Silver embossing in the shape of the museum's neoclassical main entrance glittered in the sun. He offered it to her.

"The second number listed goes to my office," he said. The first, although he did not say so, went to the giftshop and he had not yet figured out why. Figuring out the circa-1950 phone system in the building was going to be his next project once the planetarium opening was finished with.

Zia took the card and glanced at it before giving into the habit of filing it away with the others she collected at work. The museum did ring a bell, enough for her to figure it's mention had been tossed around her circle of friends.

She would call, even though she was pretty sure she could just lift a ticket off one of her buddies. It didn't hurt to initiate contact, right? At least she had a somewhat legit excuse.

"I'd love to come see your work," She added, recalling a vague memory of visiting the museum when it was more lackluster some years past. That and she was certain that if it was shiny enough, it was just the kind of 'cultural' thing her boss liked to attach himself to. As much as she didn't like taking Thomas anywhere, brownie points with the guy who signs your check is never a bad thing.

An irritating buzz from her phone prompted her to dig it out of her purse and she grimaced a little at the 'urgent' text message that popped up on the screen. Speak of the devil.

"Ugh, it's.. work," She explained, giving the blackberry a little wave before stuffing it back in her bag and balling up Harley's leash, hoping to clip it back on him without too much incident. But before she went off trying to chase him down she looked back to Iouri with a stumbling, "So... uh, I-I guess I'll call you? You know... If I decide I need a ticket," She said, pretty much conceding by the end of that sentence 'Yeah, because, I actually just want an excuse to call you.'
