Amphi had come back from a long swim in her dorm room, tired of the deep sea scenary, she had taken the time to switch to her humanoid form to explore the school yet again. Though she wanted more to visit the celestial dragon she had gone to prom with. She had enjoyed his company, and though Prom was a blur of dancing, lights and music, she remembered having fun with him.
The nice thing was, if she managed to work up the courage she could visit him whenever she wanted to really. Being in the same dorms helped her with that, and a instant shy connection she fgelt with him. She enjoyed that he was a calm sort of monster and of course, that he was a landwalker, no even better that he came from the stars.
She flipped her walking pattern to head to his room, maybe he'd like to go out some? Just as she was about to reach it though, something felt off. No she just couldn't do it yet. Blushing as she passed his door, she headed into a random other one. The one that lead to the roof of the monster dorms. Running up the stairs, her blush fully bloomed, she broke out into the roof and sighed.
"Well darn it, I guess I won't be able to-" Amphi looked around her, the roof had such a nice setting with the stars overhead and had her head holding high as she craned her neck to look at them all. She had seen the night sky before, though it was mostly blurry because of the water that separated her view from her. She breathed in deeply again, "It is so pretty up here." She said aloud, was there anyone up here anyways?

It was a beautiful night, the halloween air crisp under the stars. He was often on the roof at night, staring into the starry sky usually with a book by his side. It was peaceful and quiet, but more than that, it was here that he felt closest to home, here that he felt he could look into the stars and discover all the secrets of the universe.
Tonight was no exception, the dragon reclining on his back near the edge of the roof, his head resting on his hands. The ever present book rested at his side, opened to a chart that seemed to match the stars above, his gaze fixed on the night sky.
His tail twitched, a deep breath, inhaling the night air.
Hmmm?
A sound had caught his ear, a voice? His head turned, looking behind him to search for the source, scanning the roof until his gaze fell on a familiar form. Was that--
"Hello?"

Amphi jumped as she heard a reply to her comments. A brief hello from a recognized voice calmed her nerves as she walked around the roof to where the celestial dragon sat. Surprise flickered in her eyes as she looked at the same dragon she had attempted to visit in his room. It was odd how fate seemed to play like that. Awkwardly she stood there staring at him before smiling shyly.
"Hello Sheriden." Her voice was quiet though it had the light musical lilt that her voice naturally carried. She came to sit by him, bring her knee's up to her chest as she made herself comfy by him, her face kept that faint blush as she looked at him. "I didn't expect to see you up here." she phrased it more curiously then a true question.
"What brings you up on the roof?" she asked as she looked over at his gaze which was drawn upwards and then to the book he held, a map of the constellations and stars matched to the view they had now. She wasn't an expert as she looked over at it though, and wondered if he would tell her about it. Though she couldn't help her constant blush and her gaze that was constantly drawn downwards.

He had sat up, his gaze fixed on the approaching figure. He could already feel his ears growing warm, the silver glow mercifully concealed by the darkness. Amphi, she was pretty under the starlight.
It was several moments before he realized he was staring again, his gaze hastily turning skyward again, his tail giving a nervous twitch.
"I...come out here a lot, it's the best place to see the stars."
He turned to look back at her with a sheepish smile. Was he remembering the prom and the dress she had worn, the many songs spent on the dance floor despite the fact neither of them had done much dancing until that night? He had hoped to see her again, however he had not expected to do so on the roof.
"You?"
But he certainly did not object to her company, even if he was turning every shade of silver possible at that moment.

"Ah so your after stargazing!" She smiled at him, and then tilted her head up with his, enjoying the view with a quiet moment between them. She, Herself was lost in a moment of a daydream as she looked for the Pisces constellation she paid tribute to. Though she knew it was most likely the wrong season for it. She hummed as she drifted back to where she sat. "Hmmm? Oh I was out for a walk really." She smiled again before her face turned red in a instant, a walk that had her heading from her dorm to his to talk to him and now look at where she was at.
"I mean I was walking around the dorms and um, well I was going to visit you and then I got really nervous, so I ran upstairs and isn't it odd how your here?" She rambled her face kept turning redder, she was so caught up in embarrassing herself that she didn't see that he was in the same predicament. "I mean, I like seeing you cause your nice, but I was so embarrassed and I didn't mean to run away from your room," She rambled again, her words coming out really fast, "And I don't mean to intrude, oh but I don't want you to think I hate you or something!" She lifted her hands and covered her face before peeking out, "I am so sorry, I am so weird about all this stuff. I just get really nervous and and and...." she quieted down before taking a breath, moving her head to her curled up knee's and giggling. "You'd think I just jumped off the loony train." She laughed before turning to look at him, "Being near you is nice, Is it okay if I stay and you tell me about the other stars? I only know about the Pisces Constellation."

If Sheridan was not already glowing bright silver, he certainly was now! He wast staring at her, blinking, torn between confusing and...well he wasn't sure what he was feeling but he did know it felt a lot warmer up here now! With all the nervous twitching his tail was doing he'd have been glad his cat had not followed him to the roof tonight, at least he would have been had it occured to him to think of that.
Well, um...uh...I... He was as quiet as she was rambly. What did he do, what did he say? He was staring again, why did he keep doing that? Sheridan, stop staring! He really needed to find a book on girls!
"I...I don't mind."
Deep breath, relax. His tail twitched, seeming to relax as the conversation turned to the stars, his gaze turning skyward.
"Pisces is in that direction, but you can't see it from here right now."
He pointed in a direction toward the horizon where the constellation shone out of view, hidden by the curve of the world.

Amphi felt a tinge of light hit her skin and looked over at Sheriden, he was a bright silver color like she was a bright red. Ah so they we're still both blushing a lot with each other. She laughed out loud again, kind of random to him but to her, her internally musing was enough to chuckle at herself.
She quieted as he stared at her, just staring. She couldn't bring herself to hold the silver gaze long before she dropped her eyes from his, nervously playing with her fingers. Did she do something? Oh maybe she said to much! No maybe she didn't say enough! "Is...Is everything alright? Did...Do I look bad? Or is something on me?" She looked at him a bit startled before moving around, look from one side of her to the other to make sure she didn't have something on her, or starting changing or something cause who knew. Oh and his tail was moving so much, it was like a cat who was either extremely happy or irked. She tucked her chin in her hand as she thought of what to do.
"Oh! Oh! Oh thank you so much." She gave him the brightest smile she could as he welcomed her and scooted closer, though she wasn't all that big on physical contact, she was more after the closeness of another being. Besides her sisters and a only a few other student's, she really didn't have anyone to talk or be close to. It was nice sitting on the roof as she learned more about Stars and Sheriden.
She looked where he pointed and squinted at the sky. "Oh, I can't see it. That's too bad!" She sighed and then looked over at his book, "What constellation are you looking for now? Do you have a favorite one?"

N-no, no, nothing was wrong! Blushing all over again, he quickly looked away. Arg, why was he so nervous, and why did he always stare at her? Sigh, as smart as he was, and he still was completely lost. He was really going to have to learn to get over that...
"Y-you look fine."
He blurted out the words, as if he were afraid he'd offend or upset her by saying nothing, which he certainly did not want to do. He liked Amphi, he enjoyed her company, he was just so very...lost. You'd think he'd have gotten over it at prom, but alas, he seemed as shy and clueless as ever.
He offered her a smile, suddenly very aware of just how close she was to him. Deep breath, relax, he reached out to pick up his book, placing on his lap where they could both see it.
His favorite constellation? He wasn't sure if he had a favorite, he rarely looked at stars in the sense that they made constellations. More often when he looked to the stars, he was looking at their beauty as a whole, looking to the secrets that they held, the effect they had on the universe around them, gravity, magnetism. How old was the star he was looking at right now? How massive, how dense? What--he shook his head, clearing his thoughts as he turned to look at Amphi again and then down to the book.
"This group of stars here, is the same as that one there."
He had pointed to a place on the page to a constellation labeled hydra, and then to its location in the night sky.
"But the same group of stars could make any image you want. And there, see that star? That's really a cluster of stars, and that band of stars, that's part of our galaxy."
He was pointing in the direction of the stars he spoke of, gesturing toward each star in turn. It seemed in his excitement he had forgotten his nervousness, his tail now flicking like an excited puppy.

"Oh well! Thank you." She smiled at him again and patted his arm affectionately, pleased that she didn't bother him or embarrassed him with a unfortunate attire or something. Though she was overly vain, she liked to think she dressed well enough for the Land walkers, and hoped that her clothing was appropriate though, she did get comments on how little she wore. Or were they warnings? Anyways, she was glad she looked alright. Well actually, why was she worried? It was Sheriden and he had seen her in her clothing already, and he had seen her in her prom dress. The only thing left was her natural form. Oh jack, she blushed so bright red at the thought of him seeing her as a mermaid before waving it away. When the time came, and if they were good friends maybe she would be brave enough to show him. For now, she just focused on the present.
When he moved the book to his lap, she looked over to see where his finger pointed and then to the sky. She frowned as she looked at the group trying to make the shape and stared a while before she could finally see it. "I see it!" she clapped excited, much like a child before looking again at the other stars he pointed out. "A cluster? Is that why it's so bright? Wait, are those all huge long strips stars as well?" she pointed to the milky way, the huge river of stars and was so intrigued by what he pointed out, and even more that he was so enthusiastic about it. She thought it was cute of him to know so much and that it was something he liked.
"Galaxy? Is there more worlds out there? We hear stories as young mermaids of other places but I have never heard any of the sky! Its always about landwalkers, even when we talk about our patron goddess we refer to her as a landwalker instead of a goddess of the stars." She moved to point her finger at a large star in the book, one that matched a yellow star in the sky, "Why is that star yellow? and there's a red one too!" She said as she pointed up at them, "Are they planets too?"

There was a new flush of silver on his ears at her touch, glancing at her from the corner of his eye without turning his head away from the book.
It was only a moment, his attention turning back to the book and all the questions she asked, tail flicking back and forth. This was his element, stars and space, and element he was more than happy to share and talk about with anyone who would listen, like a kid in pile of brand new toys.
"Partly, but there are other clusters that shine far less brightly. Stars that are closer appear brighter to us here, as do those that burn at a higher temperature."
An excited smile, Sheridan reached into the large pocket of his pants and took out his eyepad. Turning the device on, he quickly scrolled through the screens to find the app he sought, a few words typed, and an image of various star types appeared on the screen. He placed the eyepad on top of the book for her to see.
"The stars are in different colors because they burn at different temperatures. This one is a red dwarf, it's red because it burns at a lower temperature. The yellow one is hotter. Stars that burn at the highest temperatures appear white and blue."

Amphi hadn't notice his flush as he pulled out his Eyepad and showed her more stars. Colors effected by heat? The distance that separated the sky from her sea was really starting to show as she learned everything she could from Sheriden. When it came down to it, She was learning the sciences of the sky, and while most of her older sisters would've objected, because they liked to keep her dedicated to the Pisces constellation cult, she was enjoying herself way too much. A thousand questions circled in her head as she listened to him.
"How close can stars be? Can we travel to them from here?" she looked up at him, Electric blue eyes were wide with curiosity. "Do other people live on stars if they are close? Did you come from a star?" she shot questions out so fast, not giving him time to recover before again bending over to look at the eyepad.
"But there is so many white stars! Does that mean there is a lot of high burning stars?" she read over the info as quick as she could as he flipped through the colored stars. "If it burns hotter, do they have a shorter life span? What happens when...." Amphi pointed to a flickering star in the sky as it slowly winked away. "What happens when a star disappears like that?"
She couldn't placed why she was so interested by this, maybe because Sheriden made it easy for her to ask questions. "Oh, I am being so selfish!" She laughed, "Do you want to know about the Sea's? You can ask anything you like of me too!"

So many questions, so many questions! If Sheridan were a puppy, no doubt his tail would have been a blur of wagging. She was asking him questions about stars and willingly listening as he rambled, and suddenly he had completely forgotten about how nervous he was.
"The closest stars are just over four light years away, that's twenty-four trillion miles away. But there are stars we can see that are millions of light years away, and there are stars even further that we can't see from here."
He was flipping through the screens on his eyepad again, stopping when he came to an image a star chart that showed various known stars with their distances from the world. Zooming out the image would reveal galaxies as well and how far they were from the milky way.
"Stars burn at temperatures from three thousand degrees celsius to over thirty thousand degrees, most creatures would be burned up long before they reached the outer corona of a star. The hottest stars have a higher mass and more fuel, that's why they burn so much hotter, but they also burn through their fuel much faster and thus burn out sooner that those that burn at lower temperatures."
Another flip through the screens, this time to a chart with images and descriptions of different star types including color, temperature, brightness, and size comparisons.
He glanced up at the sky, looking to the 'star' that she had indicated as it twinkled and then faded to darkness.
"That was actually a meteor, a piece of debris from space burning through the atmosphere. But when a star dies..."
He trailed off, he didn't like to think of the idea of stars dying, for when a star died, it meant a dragon had fallen. He shook his head to clear it, reminding himself that even when a star faded it didn't trying die, it just changed form, living on as a white dwarf, a black hole, or even a nebula. Perhaps dragons did the same.
"The star will expand to many times its size, if it's a massive star it will become a supernova, a supernova can create a nebular, which in turn will be reborn as a new star. Other stars will collapse into white dwarfs, or extremely massive stars will collapse into a black hole."
He paused for a moment, looking up at her with a shy smile.
"Maybe someday I could take you to one."

Amphi watches as the silver flush from before fade as Sheriden focused on answering her questions. Her hand rested on her chin as she stared up at him, fascinated by the way he spoke and how well informed he was. She could tell that this was one of his many passions.
Her eyes popped at the measure of distance and had her reeling back into their discussion instead of just staring at the dragon like a love struck girl. "That's quite the distance to travel isn't it!?" She joked before waving her hand to the sky, "So far away, there must be billions of stars, and if there is billions of stars, The universe must be infinite!" She smiled and thought of her ocean's, they had seemed infinite to her but to hear talk of the sky just made her realize how small her world actually was.
"A meteor? So a falling star that we make wished upon yes?" She laughed as she thought of the countless debris that must be floating around in space. Just what, she wondered, did that debris come from? Dying planets? Chunks of moons broken off by impact? Who knew.
"A black hole?" She had heard of the holes in the universe. Legends spoke that those that traveled into a black hole, if survived we're transported to another time and another space. To Amphi, it was too much info to process and just took what he said one at a time.
"Take me to a star!" She exclaimed, pure astonishment on her face before it turned red with pleasured embarrassment. "That would, Wow I don't even-" She waved her hands in all sorts of flustered movements, shocked that he had said such a thing. There were no words to actually portray the happiness she felt and instead, she hugged him tightly. "That would be so wonderful...." She said loudly before adding, "but is it all right to do that?" in a hushed whisper.

"Maybe, there is no way to know how far the universe reaches, we cannot see that far. We can only see around 28 billion light years away, that's as far as it is possible to see because that's the furthest point from which light has reached us. We can't know what lies beyond, but it is most likely the universe reaches far beyond we can see."
He had flipped through the eyepad again until he reached a diagram of the visible universe, displaying the horizon of the universe with a list of measurements and well known stars, galaxies, and systems.
"You could make a wish on one."
If one believed in wishes that was. Choosing not to speak that particular thought, he instead flipped to another screen on the eyepad, this time to a image of a black hole, or rather the light of the pulsar it was feeding on being sucked into the mass of gravity. But before he could answer the question, she had already asked another question.
He nodded with a smile.
"I'm not old enough to fly that far on my own yet, but when I am I could."
He could only fly to the edges of the atmosphere at his age, but one day he could fly to the stars.

"It must be so....." Amphi raised her hands to cup the sky before smiling, "It must be so much fun to study something like this. There are so many unanswered questions you could ask, and only find by constant years of dedication to the subject." She touched his arm and smiled at him, "Are there other things you like to study Sheriden? I can see you are a scholar of the universe, do you only study stars?" She was curious about her friend, well now she considered him a friend.
"Wishes." She pursued her lips as she thought of them before shrugging, a light dimmed in her eyes giving a unbearably sadness tone to them. "I do not believe in wishes now. Such silly things from childhood." She shrugged as she watched him show here the natural formation of the black hole. Her head reeled with the pure awesome power of it.
"To fly, It must be such a wonder." She looked over him again before standing up and holding her hand out to him, "I hate to be impolite, but could you stand for a second?" She smiled at him encouragingly, "I didn't get to see you as you at Prom So i would like to take this chance to..."study" you yes?" she grasped on that word as she left her hand open for him to take. She wouldn't be hurt if he had said no, because it was forward and a cross of boundaries of personal space. But she had questions she would like to ask of him, about him. Such was the curiosity of a Mermaid to a Dragon.
