Romeo and Juliet...

Othello...

Of Mice and Men...

Animal Farm...

Arian bit back a sigh of dismay as yet another book was pushed to the side. Just who had had the ‘bright’ idea of coming up with this list of books anyway – so far he’d yet to come across a book with a decent ending – and by decent he meant the ‘they all lived happily ever after’ type of ending. After all what was wrong with a bit of happily ever after? This was fiction he was reading – made-up stories – it wasn’t as if he was reading the daily news.

Unfortunately part of his make-up classes involved reading a couple of books and writing book reviews about them. It wouldn’t have been a bad class-work task to do, to be honest if not for the fact that the books had to be selected from the list the teacher had given him. It didn't detract from the fact that right now he'd much rather be reading through that book with instructions on how to create an interesting-looking butterfly pendant using silver wire and wooden beads that he'd reluctantly by-passed.

“Drat” he mumbled to himself quietly as Macbeth was added to the pile of seemingly rapidly growing discarded books. The way things were going he was never going to find a suitable book.

Lorne might have been somewhat of an ooposing sight at first - tall stature even with his poor posture, his dark hair and eyeshadow against pale skin and just as pale eyes - but he was probably the most hopelessly friendly person in the city. However, the stress was on hopeless.

He was been sitting at a near by table littered with books of his own selection, casting concerned glances over to Arian with each sigh or sign of frustration, wondering if the boy needed help with something, but being too shy to just go over and offer it himself. It was only when he was walking past, book in hand to replace them to their proper places, that he glimpsed at the list.

That...looked right up his alley.

On his way back from returning the books he bit his lip and finally drew from his tiny well of courage.

"You umm...you need some help with, uh...with something there?"

Arian was in the process of adding yet another book – what was with these books anyway – to the pile of discarded books when he was startled by the sound of a voice behind him.

Biting back a yelp – had he actually vocalised his annoyance over the stupid booklist aloud – Arian semi-turned book still in hand. “I’m sorry for the...” he began, voice apologetic in deference to the annoyed librarian that he just knew was behind him. And then he blinked, voice trailing off as he focused on the person behind him.

He doesn’t look like a librarian – that was the first thing that struck Arian. The second thing that struck him was the other boy’s height – okay so being a measly 5’3” meant that you got used to generally being one of the shorter people around – but still the other boy was tall. Trying his best not to stare, Arian gave the boy an apologetic look. “I wasn’t disturbing you was I?” Realising that he still had the latest no-good-book to hand, he tried to surreptitiously add it to his pile of discarded books. At this rate it seemed he was never going to find a book out of the list.

"Nah. Just thought you looked like you could use some help. Summer reading? Those are some pretty good ones there," he said, looking to the stack if discarded books.

Sure, they often didn't have the ideal ending, and Lorne sometimes wanted to throw a few of them against the wall when the characters so obviously muck stuff up with their significant other - romanticist much? - but all in all he could appreciate them.

Arian shook his head at the taller boy’s question. “No make-up class work” he corrected, his voice slightly gloomy. “To be honest, so far none of them have really been my type of book.” Okay so he hadn’t actually done more than flick through the ending of each, but still... “The endings are way too gloomy.” And by gloomy read depressing.

Arian held a hand out “I’m Arian.” Since they were talking, it seemed polite to introduce himself to the other boy.
