If one were to walk into the library, they would see a small Baku ghoul sitting on the floor, surrounded by stacks of books. Xiu had two books open in front of her and took turns looking from one, to the other, and then back. Her brows were furrowed and her tongue stuck out from the corner of her mouth as she tried to concentrate on the text, trailing her finger down the pages.

"Baku...baku...ah, here!" Lighting up, she rested her finger below the passage that caught her interest, skimming the text with an eager smile. However, after a moment, her expression promptly fell and she snapped the book closed. Into the reject pile this book went, and one of the other books took it's now-empty place.

No matter how much she looked, Xiu could never find anything on a Baku like her. Stories of ones that ate good dreams instead of nightmares were non-existent in the books that she had already gone though. Was there something wrong with her? "Or maybe I'm not a Baku at all, but some other demon." The ghoul grumbled aloud, running a hand through her pale hair. After a moment of pause, she emitted a sigh and promptly stood up, stooping down only to pick the stacks up so that she could return them to the shelves. That was enough searching for today--the more she failed, the more anxious thoughts filled her mind.

Raziel had been in a rather distasteful mood lately. He had been getting these feelings of being lost, not knowing his place, or even what he was. He had gotten to thinking and realized that unlike a lot of the other students here at Amityville, he could not claim to be any particular species of monster. His parents had never divulged this information onto him, and now he wanted to know.

Stalking his way into the library, Raziel easily looked like a dark cloud hovered about his head. His scowling expression only match the darkness that seemed to cling to him today. He made his way over to a corner of the library that had the Halloweentown residents encyclopedias. These books contained all the information on every single race and type of creature crawling about in the dark world.

Raziel grabbed a random book, without really thinking about what was in it or not and loudly slumped into a chair at the table diagonally across from another student who appeared to be leaving. With his head propped up on one arm, Raziel watch the other student out of the corner of his eye while pretending to open the book and flip a page or two.

Replacing all the books in their proper spots was a tedious job, but Xiu decided that it was only polite that she do it herself, especially because she had taken so many.

While she weaving through all the shelves to return each book, Xiu wound up by the table of a blue-haired student who she had noticed entering the library just a few minutes prior. When she first saw him, Xiu immediately came to a decision: she would take care to avoid this boil. He seemed...unhappy, for the lack of a better word, and the scowl he wore certainly didn't invite any friendly chit-chat.

Or at least, avoiding him had been her intention, but when she gave him a wary sideways glance, her gaze ended up flickering to the book in his possession instead. Was that...? Then she looked down at the remaining few books that she still carried. Considering the subject she had been researching, most of these books were (unsurprisingly) on the various races that inhibited Halloween Town.

The very topic, she noticed, that this student appeared to be reading.

"U-um, researching races?" Xiu piped up suddenly, offering a polite smile as she stepped a bit closer. She leaned forward so that she could take a look at the encyclopedia open in front of him. Yup, she was right. Smiling at the boil, she decided to try being helpful despite her prior decision to keep away from the grumpy monster. "If you're looking up races, these books are pretty good too." She said, lifting the books that she still had in her arms.

When the ghoul stopped near him, Raziel stopped watching her out of the corner of his eye and relied entirely on his hearing to wait for her to go away. No such luck, instead she came closer. She leaned into Raziel's personal bubble and tried to see what he was reading. She obviously didn't see the glare that he gave her, otherwise she probably would've run away, but the fact that she was knowledgable in which books to read for information on races made him pause and rethink scaring her away.

"Uhh.. thanks," he barely grumbled out, almost inaudibly. He made a move to take the heavy books from her arms, she looked so frail anyway. Plopping the books down on the desk, he let out a rather heavy sigh. This was going to be a long and difficult task to find out what he was. He wasn't looking forward to this, despite having a fondness for learning and academia, this somehow seemed a lot less "fun".

Raziel glanced back up at the other student, who was still standing there, unsure what to do next really. He didn't like the idea of asking for help, not at all, and she looked like she'd be the perfect one to ask too. In a low mumble, Raziel gave in to himself and barely got out, "I don't even know where to begin..." The forlorn expression on his face showed how sad he was about this whole ordeal.

"You're welcome." She smiled, giving a polite dip of her head. She let the boil take the books from her, and then...

Uh, what now? Xiu supposed that she would just...leave him to his research? That seemed like the best idea. She began to shuffle backwards, opening her mouth to wish him luck with whatever it was he was researching when the boil suddenly spoke up. It was quiet, but considering that the library was all but silent right now, the Baku managed to pick up his words.

"Where to begin?" She repeated, tilting her head with confusion. It was then that she noticed the expression on his face, and her tail immediately drooped. Grabbing the edge of the table, she stooped down and looked at the boil with knitted brows. "What are you trying to look for?" Xiu wasn't sure if he would accept but...she had time, and she was more than willing to give him a hand if he needed it. The look on his face right now was just so sad that all the little Baku wanted to do was to give him a hug.

To think that not five minutes ago, she had wanted to stay far, far away from him.

At this point in time, Raziel wasn't entirely sure if he wanted the ghoul to go away or not. His typical response would be to try and scare her off and be alone, but for some reason he kept saying things just loud enough for her to hear, and by extension, stay. She had stooped down and looked into his face, but it lasted only a moment as Raziel turned his head just enough to not be seen as well. From the moment when he could see her, he could tell that she was visibly upset because he was unhappy.

To answer her question, he took a moment and a small sigh before replying, "I'm trying to figure out exactly what I am," he paused for a moment, wondering whether he should even go on, she was a complete stranger to him after all. He weighed the odds silently for only a moment before carrying on, "My parents never told me where we came from, or what race we were, and now I'm trying to figure it out for myself..."

Xiu's own worries--her concern about the fact she was an atypical Baku--immediately disappeared when she heard the boil's dilemma. It was one thing to go against the grain of a typical race, but to not even know what you were? He seemed so upset about it as well, the poor boil. Well then, there was only one thing she could do, and that was help him.

Without warning, she straightened up and pulled out the chair beside the boil. "I'll give you a hand," She said, sitting down and scooting her chair closer to the table. "So long as you don't mind, that is?" It technically wasn't any of her business, but for some reason, Xiu just couldn't help but butt in. There she was, being a pushy--albeit well-intentioned--ghoul.

"I'm Xiu-Ying," She added when she realized she didn't know his name, "But just Xiu is fine. And you're...?"

Raziel looked up at the ghoul when she rather abruptly pulled out the chair next to him and plopped down, he hadn't been expecting that at all. She was offering to help him even though they didn't even know each other and it wasn't really her problem at all. "That would be great..." he managed to stammer out.

"Xiu..." he tried the name out in his mouth, trying to get a feel for how to say it, before coming back to the present and realizing he had yet to introduce himself, "I'm Raziel," he offered a hand to the ghoul to shake as well.

He was beginning to not mind the company of the ghoul and was actually even a little bit relieved that she wanted to help him.

She had actually been expecting some resistance, so his response surprised her a little. Despite her initial opinion on him, he really didn't seem like that grumpy or mean of a guy, did he? "Raziel, is it? Nice to meet you, Raziel!" She shook the offered hand warmly, the friendly smile never leaving her face.

Grabbing the closest book, she put it down in front of her and cracked it open to the index. "So, um...where to start?" Turning back to Raziel, she looked at him carefully, trying to find a trait that could have been unique to his race. She was having a little trouble trying to figure out if some of his characteristics were unique to his race, or unique to him.

"Um...tell me a little about yourself and your parents?" She frowned thoughtfully, tapping her chin, "Things like...any shared traits or even likes and dislikes?" While she was talking, she reaching into her obi to pull out a pen and a small pad of paper. People would be surprised to find out how much stuff in carried in there.

Raziel really wasn't sure where to begin, but so far it seemed like Xiu knew a lot more than he did about how to go about finding what he was. After her question he sat there thinking for a good few minutes. What traits were important about him and his family? What are the kinds of things that would lead them to the right answer?

"Well, my entire family has a tail like mine, reptilian, but everyone's has slightly different colors and markings..." he trailed off, still trying to think of what would be important. "Uhhmm... we all have paw-like feet, much like a mammal, but the colors on our legs and hips match our tails. We eat a lot of meat and fish and other water creatures, not very many vegetables though..." he trailed off again.

He hoped that would be enough to really get started.

Xiu's tongue stuck out from the corner of her mouth as she nodded, jotting down all the little notes that Raziel was providing her with. Her brows where knit in concentration as tried to get all the information down--the boil spoke quite fast, really!--and despite how serious she was in trying to help him, her facial expression--with the tongue and the furrowed brows--was a little...comical.

Finally, when she got everything, the Baku scanned down the list. "So, would you...would you say that you guys are carnivores? Though you do eat vegetables occasionally?" Frowning thoughtfully, she turned her attention back to the book, sliding her finger down the page. "Maybe we can narrow down the possibilities." Despite having joined him out of the blue, Xiu seemed surprisingly into this task. Finding what she was looking for, she flipped to the carnivore section of the encyclopedia...

...And found that that didn't help very much. There were still a ton of monsters under that particular section. "Hmmm...do you...do you have a natural form? What does that look like?" She eyed her pen and pad of paper for a moment before sliding them both to Raziel. Maybe he could jot down the characteristics for her, or even doodle a picture!

Raziel watched Xiu as she quickly wrote down the things he was saying. She seemed to be concentrating very hard just for him, and they had just met! Raziel was unused to this kind of kindness and generosity from anyone. His tail twitched in anticipation while he waited to see what she might ask next.

Pausing for just a moment, Raziel did his best to answers her questions as best and helpfully as he could, "Umm, yes, we would be carnivores that occasionally eat vegetables... though only to balance out our diet!" he added the last part as a sort of afterthought. Raziel leaned over a little bit as Xiu flipped through the book, he was both excited and nervous to find out what exactly he was.

So far they hadn't had much luck, but then Xiu had another brilliant idea. The trouble was whether he knew the information or not. "Well..." he trailed off, tapping his foot thoughtfully, "My parents used to tell us about a natural form, but we rarely ever use it, and some believe that if you go long enough without using it, you lose the ability to control it..." He trailed off again, lapsing almost entirely into his thoughts. He was mostly thinking of what that meant for him since he had never used his own natural form! What if he couldn't ever control it? The idea sickened him and he got dizzy for a moment, but shook his head and tried to pay attention again. He took the pad of paper from the ghoul and tapped the pen for a moment. "They would tell us stories about the natural forms, but it might take me a few minutes to figure out how all those parts go together... If you know what I mean."

He wasn't even sure if he knew what he meant. The stories his parents had told him as a child were fabulous tales, but did they have enough information to discover his true identity? This was quite the conundrum.

((I will draw a picture for the next post!! ♥ ♥))

With this much information, surely they could find something about Raziel's race, right? Granted that...alright, they were a little general. There were probably plenty of monsters out there who were carnivores, and a couple who had similar physical traits that Raziel did. The only question was whether they would be able to narrow down all these potential choices and pinpoint one that matched perfectly.

Fortunately, the monster boil ended up saying something that--to Xiu, at least--sounded rather unique. "You...you can lose the ability to control your natural form?" There were hints of both interest and alarm in her voice as she asked this. She quite liked being in her human form, but...what would she ever do if she couldn't transform into her natural Baku form? The thought was actually rather scary.

Perking up when Raziel spoke again, the ghoul was quick to smile and shake her head, giving a little wag of her tail. "We're not in any rush!" She assured him, "Take your time, okay?"

Raziel finally put pen to paper and attempted to draw what came to his mind. As he sketched the creature he spoke aloud of the various bits and pieces.

"It's an odd combination of mammal and reptile... We have tails like lizards with scales. We also have scales on our feet and legs, but they fade as they reach the main part of our bodies." He paused for a moment to catch up to himself with the drawing before continuing his explanation. "Overall, our bodies have very short, fine fur, and our ears are very large. But the part that stands out the most is the sort of "mane". It's flowing and liquidy in appearance, but ethereal if you touch it, your hand will go through. It can be controlled by the more skilled, but usually just gets used in extreme circumstances as an extra limb that can take on whatever shape it needs."

He looked up from his drawing, it was as complete as he could make it for now. Especially since he had never actually seen one before.

In response to Xiu's question about losing his natural ability, he explained a little bit further, "You don't lose your natural form entirely, you just can't control when you use it or not. Most of the time it means that your natural form only comes out when things are extremely stressful and you can't handle it." He slid the pad of paper back to Xiu. Hopefully that would help to come extent. He should probably start looking through the books himself too.

Leaning forward, Xiu took in each detail as Raziel described them, her gaze skimming over the sketch. She was momentarily distracted by the fact that he was a pretty good artist--in her honest opinion, at least!--but the Baku quickly shook these thoughts away in favour for more serious ones. With this much information, surely the search would be a fairly easy one now! ...Right?

...Hopefully?

"Okay, let's see. I'll just search through the lists of monsters with these traits, and see if there's a common link between any of them. Sound good?" She smiled at Raziel, and then turned her gaze back to the thick book. She was flipping through it quite rapidly, going back and forth and running her finger down the pages as she skimmed lists in search of anything that might fit. Slowly, as she continued on, the realm of possibility got smaller and smaller...

Until there was only one.

Of course, that wasn't to say that they should cheer and rejoice. Not yet, anyways. For all she knew, this could have been an extremely outdated book where Raziel's race hadn't even been written into it yet (though that was assuming that he was one of the more "recent" races, which could have meant...within the past few hundred years). Xiu tried to keep her expression fairly impassive, afraid to build up Raziel's hope in case this wasn't the one. "Well, there's...this one that might be it." Clearing her throat, she read the passage aloud.

"...And there's a note here that says that...that their FEAR manifests itself differently for individuals." The Baku finished. Slowly, she set the book down and looked over to Raziel, hopefully expectant.
