Introduction

Welcome, this is a Solo backlog RP telling the story of three of my soquili's travels to a legendary place and the trials they faced there. In the beginning, this was meant to be a large plot involving many other people and soquili, but too many years have passed since its inception, and now it is time to get the story written.

Original Beginning: Northward

If any of the original (or new!) players would still like to take part, please feel free to send me a PM!

Chapter One

When the dark comes down, oh, the wind is on the sea
With lisping laugh and whimper to the red reef's threnody,
The boats are sailing homeward now across the harbor bar
With many a jest and many a shout from fishing grounds afar.
So furl your sails and take your rest, ye fisher folk so brown,
For task and quest are ended when the dark comes down.

When the dark comes down, oh, the landward valleys fill
Like brimming cups of purple, and on every landward hill
There shines a star of twilight that is watching evermore
The low, dim lighted meadows by the long, dim-lighted shore,
For there, where vagrant daisies weave the grass a silver crown,
The lads and lassies wander when the dark comes down.

When the dark comes down, oh, the children fall asleep,
And mothers in the fisher huts their happy vigils keep;
There's music in the song they sing and music on the sea,
The loving, lingering echoes of the twilight's litany,
For toil has folded hands to dream, and care has ceased to frown,
And every wave's a lyric when the dark comes down.

- Lucy Maud Montgomery

Heart and hoof weary, the dark unicorn bid silent farewell to the moon dappled camp he had called home these past few years. He was resolved to carry only memories of this place, for he didn't know what dangers drew him from this comforting bosom to the unknown shadow of his waking dreams. A city, clad in shadow and populated by ghosts... was it meant to be a task from the One? A manifest destiny he had only to answer in order to find the reason behind his life?

Was he finally close to Peace? Would the terrible memories of his distant past leave him if he carried this last burden for Him?

Yet this hope waned a-borning, for he knew the answer.

No.

The dreams he had had of late were a mystery unrelated to what had come before. It was an enigma of the mind that he saw the city so clearly, and a facet of his own brand of stubborness that he would seek out this dream-city in order to bring the nightmare to bay. He would find a temporary peace in having a good nights sleep... and what dangers existed he would draw to himself, leaving behind the Elderwillow soquili he had come to care so much about. Turning, he set himself on the path leading to the distant mountain passes, knowing only that the city lay beyond the desert... and the desert lay beyond the mountains. He would have to rely on the very dreams he sought to end in order to find his way to the city ... but being foolhardy was something he did from time to time.

Seresai woke with a start, her wings tucked tight and her muscles tense. Immediately she noted a major difference in sleeping arrangements, TJ was gone, leaving a gap in the protective circle the adult soquili always formed around the sleeping youngsters. Next to her, Wildfire stirred into wakefulness with a groan that was quickly muffled by her 'sister.' "Ssshh. Master Toujours is gone, Wile. We have to find him."

Blinking, the chestnut filly glanced around herself, eyes snapping into focus when she too noted the absence. "That is unlike him. Where is the Watch?" She whispered back, looking around. Slowly climbing to her feet, Seres also cautiously starting sniffing around for the Watch, finally locating Flame's white bear Gully. A brief exchange told her that TJ had gotten up not long before they woke, and had said he was heading out for a walk... and may not be back for a few days.

Meeting up with Wildfire again, Seres shared this tidbit of information, and the pair of them fell silent as they thought about it. "I don't think-" "That isn't-" They both started to say at once, before they both stopped and smiled at each other. "We're in agreement then, that isn't what he's doing. He just wants a few days lead so his tracks will vanish." Seresai continued, nodding when Wildfire did. "Exactly. But should we follow him? What if he really does just want to be alone?" The grounded filly asked, flicking a piece of her flaxen forelock out of her eyes. Stomping a hoof, Seres looked positively indignant. "He gave up that right when he took US as students. We'll find him, and find out for ourselves. Let's go!"

Tracking someone who didn't want to be found might prove difficult for the pair of young mares (both only recently out of fillyhood) but Seresai and Wildfire were nothing if not stubborn. After leaving the Camp behind with a message left for their respective families, they split up to cover more area.

Unsurprisingly, it was the attentive Wildfire who caught sight of a stray strand of black hair caught on a branch. Marking it, she tracked back to Seres, and they both proceeded onward from that point towards the distant mountains.

"Say, Seres... you don't think he's going to try to cross those mountains in Winter do you? It's Fall already... they may be impossible to navigate."
