Canicus did not really think the world to be cruel or unfortunate, but more often than not he had this unsettled feeling of dreadful boredom. He knew that this was because he kept mostly to himself and it was his own fault, but he also felt as though larger dealings were in the works. Or... well not in the works, more likely. The world moved at it's own slow pace and as time moved on and the circle kept going through it's motions and lions grew stronger because that was the will of the world and the weak ones died... well it could only last for so long. Icus shook his head, trying to rid himself of the slightly troubled thoughts. He would have rather been sparring, but there was no one of interest lately. Soon he would be doing what he liked to do best, and that was all it took to calm his mind.
He carried himself slowly up a large dune, panting slightly. It was not quite the end of the day, but the great fire ball was pretty far past the point where it seemed most hot in the sky. Night would come within the next few hours, perhaps. That did not mean the heat was any less unbearable though, just shrinking in it's intensity. When he reached the top of the dune his fail flicked and he looked out across the land of the ever-shifting sand. He smiled slightly, nodding. Yes, this was his most cherished place. Not the sand dune, but these lands. He'd never ventured from them, and had no wish to. He enjoyed this way of life, even if it was hard and sometimes lonely.

Water for everybody!
Atsila Inadu's mother had said it was only a small victory. The fact that there was still so little water was still a huge issue. Everybody was getting less as the rations were cut back, but at least they were all getting something! As a cub the severity of the problem didn't quite strike Ina to the same affect as it did others. She didn't really understand rationing or drought in the same terms as those older than her. Really, all Inadu understood was that she was hot and thirsty and that before she could quench her parched muzzle, the amount of water she was treated to had already been all lapped up!
What was more concerning--though perhaps only to the daughter of a medic--was that if she wasn't satisfied then all the sick and injured adults in Ea's care were probably suffering as well. And they were all far bigger than she was! Her mother had assured her that it had become the entire pride's task to locate more water. Evidently this also seemed to include the medic, who was often found traveling with her water-seeker father, Vlam when not attending those in her care. Inadu didn't think they had found anything yet and though she wasn't exactly sure how to go about finding water, she couldn't simply sit by!
Something had to be done!
So here she was, padding on huge, flopping paws across the scalding desert sand. Not entirely certain of her location in the blazing desert and already exhausted from dragging along the hollow tortoise shell that Ina had cleverly decided would be her means for transporting the water home, once she found it. This was definitely a more daunting task than it had first sounded, but the inky black cub was nothing if not determined! Tugging at the lip of the cumbersome shell clenched between her jaws an inch at a time as she climbed backwards towards the crest of, what felt like, an impossibly tall dune.

He wondered how long the pride would continue on as it was, how long before members began to pass. Or even worse, when those who were weak willed decided to leave the lands all together. He suspected that would end up being for the better, in the long run. It meant less mouths to feed and a stronger pride, one who's resolve was less likely to waver. His tail flicked and he took a deep breath, deciding it was not very helpful to keep thinking about these matters.
His ears twitched and his brows raised slowly as a cub suddenly came over the crest of the dune. He found himself smirking just slightly, finding whatever it was that she was doing to be slightly amusing. What was that she was dragging? He stretched his neck out to try and get a better look, then cleared his throat. "What are you up to, cub?" He asked calmly, his voice deep but not intimidating. He couldn't recall her name, most of the young lions in the pride did not merit Canicus' effort in trying to remember their names. His blue gaze traveled over her markings, trying to decide if she was related or not. Parents names would be helpful in this situation, wouldn't they? But some markings just ran in the family... like the red one on her tail. A few of his own siblings had the very same marking right around the same place. It wasn't weird though, most of the pride was of the same blood.

Scooting backwards up the dune--step by sliding step--Atsila didn't realize she had an audience until the giant lion at her backside finally spoke. His deep voice, though neither shouting nor particularly accusing, startled the cub into releasing the hollow tortoise shell in her surprise. The lip slipping from her jaws as she jumped, watching in horror as the nature-made dish slid all the way back to the bottom of the sandy hill. Aah!
Spinning around sharp, golden eyes that reflected Ea's sour temperament pinned the brilliantly red male irritably. Fur bristling along her shoulders as her ears flattened, her own tiny voice weighted by the breathlessness of having dragged the shell this far and blame for being made to lose the precious item. Look what you did! You made me drop it! Now it's all the way down there! Again!
Tiny, white muzzle was drawn into an indignant pout, refusing to answer the adult's question in a blatant display of disrespect as she began to pick her way and the decline towards where her shell sat.

Canicus did not anger often. At least, he liked to think such things were true. More or less he felt that it was very hard for another to begin stoking his anger, let alone get it started. It seemed a lot of wasted energy getting mad, but with the girl so little and so upset he couldn't help but find it somewhat amusing. So he chuckled, eyebrows raising. "What I did? I've merely asked you a question. Is this anyway to be speaking to your elders?" Though his face was very serious and his tone wasn't overly joking it was still easy to detect some hint of playfulness in his words.
She was disappearing behind the dune again though, without ever letting him figure out what it was she'd been carrying. Even if it had been his voice that startled her into dropping it. He began to move up the dune, his longer legs giving him much quicker strides. When he was at the top he did not stop even for a moment before trekking down the dune and past the youngster in order to see for himself what it was she'd found.
"A shell!" He proclaimed, glancing up toward her. The shell was pretty large, especially for a little lion her size. It was not actually large when Canicus compared it to his own stature. For a moment he wondered what she could want with it, before his mind shot to the drought.
That was genius, really. As long as the water did not evaporate while one was dragging it from it's source. "A smart little one, aren't you?" He smiled.
