{ E Q }
The Quest for Ultimate Balance

There is a thin line separating madness from sanity, evil from good, delusion from truth.
There is always a line, an unpredictable, transparent frontier that can be crossed.
The point lies in not crossing it; uncertain but certain, trapped in the morbid between.
If one side did not exist the other would immediately cease to be in return; that's the rule.
Define
out without inside, or even life without death. See if you can do it.
Because there are two sides they will clash, but neither can be ever allowed dominance.
The world works in such turbulent ways; brings no peace to the haunted, no rest to the weak.
It's a forgetful place consumed in its struggle against itself from which there is no escape.
And yet, against all the odds, all the indications pointing otherwise, stating there is no hope;
There exists this line, this sliver that occupies no space for if it were they would not struggle.
There is always a line, that mustn't be crossed but followed; another way of existing on its own.
And there, in that line, honed to a hair's breadth, one may be allowed to find their momentary sanctum.
There is peace, in between, no struggle. It's an anomaly of the universe and a blessing at once;
that is
Equilibrium.

[A Report is the Way people like to see the World. They love to List. It's because they adore their tiny letters and numbers so much, because them their minds can understand. They can interpret them into information and store them away inside their heads, never bothering to dwell deeper in the information, behind the letters, to the reality that's always there but never there. Something is real only if it's perceived as such. If something is not seen, if something is not heard then it's forgotten. Even worse it never existed to begin with. Because that's the way people work. Because that's the way the world works.]

Given Name: Unknown
Last Name: Unknown
Code Name: M
3 Q
Race: Majin
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown
Height: 172 cm.
Weight: 64 kg.
Hair color: Black
Eye color: Opaque White-Silver with a black sclera
Skin color: White
Origins: Clarus Arbor

Abilities:
Defensive Withdrawal: During phase one of the experiment the subject presented a remarkable ability to cope with stressful situations by completely withdrawing its consciousness within itself. After withdrawn it was of irrelevant nature how much we might try to inflict physical or emotional agony on it as neither could reach it or break its protective closure to external stimuli. When left alone for a period longer than fifteen to twenty minutes the subject would, again, resurface from its withdrawal and resume communication with its environment normally. As insignificant this might appear one can relate it back to the ability of certain bacteria of the Firmicute phylum to produce endospores that allow them to remain dormant during extended periods in order to protect themselves from their environment. I find the fact that such a primitive function would make its appearance on a majin simply commendable!

Extreme Adaptability: Despite the subject being very withdrawn when left on its own or when visited for medical examinations and experiments by the researchers it has displayed the ability to adapt to each environment we were allowed to bring it in quickly grasping the rules and roles forced upon it every time. It would appear that its quiet nature was developed because the scientists were simply expecting that of it -to quietly sit and subject itself to the experiments ran on it for the sake of research-. It has proved to be far more sociable among the researchers when taken out of its chambers, quickly picking on the interests of those around it and developing a curiosity for whatever interested its respective partner every time. The result of its adjusting behavior was that it immediately made others to accept it as part of their circle. This can be also taken on as an instinctive reaction to ensure safety in new environments.

Illumination: In phase one the subject was shown capable of producing and controlling illuminant immaterial spheres that would glow a faint green color, reminiscent of that of bioluminescent life-forms. The light would not radiate heat or be harmful to the existence of any surrounding living things, however if generated with the intention of harming something or someone it would immediately assume a more aggressive form, highly more concentrated than the dormant floating spheres and fired as a blast by the subject's hand. It would appear that the blast's destructive power can be willingly controlled by the subject.

After Phase Two:
Satuation: In Phase two, after being forcibly turned into a Witch Eater, the subject's sparse outbursts of craving for hearts was inexplicably but most definitely entirely silenced, its hunger quenched and its power matured. Speculation has us believe it was most likely caused by the specific heart it consumed, the powers of which were almost the opposite of its own. That could potentially mean that if a Majin can find a heart that can match up to its own but in reverse and consume it, it could be possibly rid itself from the need to consume more, its existence coming to a relative balance in between two far ends of a boundary. Of course, further experimentation will be needed for such a theory to be confirmed.

Dark Light: the other mutation that came from fusing its own powers with that of the newly consumed heart was that the light it used to produce before changed in appearance although it remained relatively the same in function albeit maturing in power and becoming more versatile in the process. It now appears to be dark on the outside sporting a luminous core; almost as if the light from within radiates the darkness.

Current Residence: Lumena Castle Town

Notes: After the subject was released by the facility after deciding that if not provoked it should remain relatively stable in the presence of other living beings, we concluded that it was to the experiment's better interests that we allow it to remain as is while being closely monitored by the institution at the same time. We might revoke its freedom and take it back for further research at any time in the future should we consider it appropriate for the smooth continuation of our studies or if its powers turn malignant and fall as a regular Witch Eater. We firmly believe that due to the unique nature of its powers the subject poses no real danger to other witches, however, and, as such, its identity and past should remain secret for its -and all's- better interests. The possibility to take any action deemed necessary in order to ensure the privacy of the subject's situation and nature and the institution is kindly requested and required.
-the Supervisor

Position: Witch Eater // Cerberus Knight
Stage: Cerberus Knight

Familiar: Cantor, a white canine-like creature who additionally appears able to grow a pair of wings to be able to follow up with Kyu in flight if needed. While he doesn't appear to have any particular magical abilities he is able to communicate with Kyu and other people telepathically.

Ability Concentration/Theme: Equilibrium // Dark Light
Visual References: [hairstyle] [Menger sponge] [fractal] [butterfly] [rorschach plate 1 - butterfly] [an early sketch of Cantor]

Just a cup of Tea:

Blend: Penumbral Butterfly

Ingredients:
White Swallowtail Butterfly: The large, impressive, yet colorless wings have no more life of their own... It's also a symbol of evolution.
Broken Chesspiece: Where could this broken chesspiece of a Black King have come from? It looks lonely, somehow...
Endless Shadows: Endlessly dark and macabre
Concentrated Light: Magically concentrated light, it shines brilliantly!
Möbius band: If an ant were to crawl along the length of this strip, it would return to its starting point having traversed every part of the strip (on both sides of the paper) without ever crossing an edge!
Faery's soul: Grants the power of Faery Flight, giving the character faery-type wings.

In case Kyu can't have both his witch eater's heritage wings and the wings from the faery's soul ingredient, is it possible to substitute those for the demon-like ones?

Additional Notes:

-on adaptability- When I say that Kyu is adaptable I do mean he's adaptable. He doesn't get a choice when it's to adapt, he simply just does, his personality shifting to reflect his environment.

-on appearance- think of very stark contrasts. When I say his skin is white I don't mean in the regular range of fleshy tones but in a very white-as-paper colorless way. The same goes for his hair, it's a very cold black with colorless highlights, so on and so forth.

-on theme- There's math and numbers everywhere. Kyu's name comes from the fixed point format Q. His whole existence is based on the Menger Sponge and fractals and his familiar's name is Cantor -from the German mathematician Georg Cantor- He also calls himself 'the unaccountable, unaccounted variable'

-on abilities- in case you were wondering Kyu's abillities were actually based on bacteria. Adaptability for survival, the shielding of oneself with withdrawal (endospores) and bioluminescence are some common traits of various bacterial species.

-on the storylets bellow- if they seem confusing to you, it's because they were written in a sense that makes little to no sense. They are more styled like journal entries, confused journal entries. Considering Kyu was nothing but a child back when these were 'written' makes a little more sense of the whole deal.

-on the Facility - I suppose it's some sort of 'scientific' community that studies and runs experiments on stray majin they 'pick'? I have no idea how such an institution could ever be authorized by the government but then again man commits a lot of atrocities in the name of science and knowledge anyway...

There was a story with a need to be told

Kyu once had a name, a name he no longer recalls -nor does anybody else-. It was his only for a span of time far too small for it to mean anything and he would forget it soon afterwards. He was born as a son to a poor family living on the outskirts of Clarus Arbor but just like his name this family wouldn't be 'his own' for a long time. It happened at a time he would later not remember either, mainly because he might have chosen to forget in order to shield himself from the fear he experienced right afterwards. The first time he tried to devour a witch's heart was when he was six years old, too young, too innocent and too immature to be able to do anything but succumb to his newly-awakened urge. At that time -the first time- he had been subsequently hunted down by his father and older brother out of the house and into the nearby forest and if he were any less nimble he might have gotten killed right then and there. Thankfully he outlived the chase but was later left roaming the forest not knowing where to go since he appeared to be unwanted. For a good span of a couple months he lived in a semi-feral state, sleeping outside and stealing from the village in order to sustain himself.

For the better or the worse a researcher working at an Institution that was running experimental research on Majin happened across him when he was on one of his usual raids and picked him up out of pity only to soon find out he might have hit the jackpot, having a perfect specimen in his hands to take back at the facility. The fact nobody would look for the child and that the little boy would finally be able to settle down somewhere where prime factors that only helped to affirm the decision the man had taken.

At the institution he was given the code name M3 Q (read as Matrekyu) due to the fact he was the third available specimen for study and from the first letter in his 'guardian's' name -Quinn-. The first part of the name was usually omitted when he came up in conversation and so he became better known as simply 'Kyu' to the researchers and was what he would identify himself with later. While going through endless days -days after days after days- of testing and trying experiments to confirm or shoot theories down was at least tiring and -if nothing else- emotionally exhausting Kyu found out that he didn't mind being among the researchers the way he did. It might have been nothing but force of habit but he didn't mind. At least the researchers didn't hunt him down for what he was, instead they simply appeared to be interested in him. They never once told him it was alright, nor that he could just give in to his urges -on the contrary, they taught him to control himself by sheer willpower- but they didn't shun him for it. And he was safe with them. He had a place to stay, food to eat, clean clothes to wear and people that would care about him almost as if he were an adoptive child.

And that was the way Kyu was brought up, in relative solitude, never once leaving the facility to go to the outside world. He discovered his powers almost by mistake -after countless tries by the scientists to figure out what it was that he could do- when he was trying to read a book while the lights were dim. Wanting for the lighting to be better he had gathered together a sphere of it to hover over his head and he only realized it when someone pointed it out. From then on it was only a matter of time until he managed to control his gift with the help of the researchers that devised a series of various exercises for him to try and train. Once the researchers had deemed that they had discovered everything that there was to discover about him they decided to take their experiments to the next level. Being their more manageable specimen and with powers that were mostly passive, Kyu was decided upon as the most sane choice to turn into a witch eater. The victim used for the unholy act was the terminally ill daughter of one of the head researchers.

However manageable, Kyu appeared to have qualms about answering the call and obeying his instinct to devour hearts as he could faintly recall this had only brought pain before and whyever did they teach him how to restrain himself if they were to accept it in the first place. However hard the deed was eventually imposed on him and Kyu found a pair of wings sprouting on his back giving him the ability to fly, the magic from the consumed heart giving him new strength and mysteriously quenching his craving for more hearts as if the missing piece of a puzzle had just clicked into place.

The next couple years were spent renewing the experiments ran on him so far to determine just how much his powers had matured. To say that Kyu wasn't happy as things were would be an understatement. After all he was infinitely thankful to the scientists for finding a way -even by chance- to rid him of his compulsive need to consume others and he had all he needed there; parental figures, friends, tutors there to teach him about the world and its ways and whatever else he wanted to learn... and yet Kyu couldn't help but feel as if there was something amiss. He was more whole than he had ever been and yet somehow he was feeling just as hollow, empty -and from that feeling stemmed the desire to move on.

His request when made was heard, and followed secretly, yet closely, both by Quinn as well as his assistants Kyu was allowed to enter the Makai Royal Academy under the condition that he wouldn't let anyone to witness his wings and realize what he was unless there was a need most dire. And just like that Kyu proved himself to be an excellent student and graduated almost at the speed of light, his powers already trained and matured before he ever went there to begin with and he simply went on from there, fighting to discover the meaning to his existence and what should he really being doing in life having known no reality save for the laboratory.

It was somewhere around there that he decided to take the path of an Ars Lilium. He wasn't sure about himself at all then but was certain of the fact he didn't want to bring harm upon the Majin, his own kind after all, no matter how people chose to view them. Kyu didn't understand why the Reapers just had to hunt them down either; after all the Majin only did what they had to in order to survive. If there had been no need in them to feed on hearts then they wouldn't probably do so anyway. He knew, from his own experience, that feeding might be making someone stronger but so far it had only brought him pain -it even rendered him unable to belong anywhere seeing how he wasn't human but he wasn't a proper witch eater either, feeling no need to consume other hearts save for the one he already had.

Kyu sought a life of peace at first, thinking that's what he had thought best, what his instincts forced him to follow even if it wasn't conscious. But peace wasn't what he wanted, not what he needed. He didn't hate the humans, but living on the outside world, slowly coming to know what it was like, what he was lacking, he slowly came to realize how truly atrocious was what the scientists had done to him, how, no matter what the cost, what the purpose, it was terribly wrong in so many ways. Fully understanding that he and his other kindred had been held captive in one way or another in that place, forced into a routine that they hadn't chosen for themselves made him somewhat less appreciative of the fact they had let him outside. But war wasn't what he chose either.

But choosing neither peace nor war did not necessarily mean remaining stagnant. For Kyu chose to walk another path, a winding delicate road able to be seen only by one who has so long hung in the balance between things that are and aren't, should be and shouldn't be, a solitary road meant to be traversed in infinite loneliness and self-subjected withdrawal most needed for survival. Of course, the distance that grew within Kyu day after passing day was never given the chance to be witnessed by the outside world, even if he had taken it to heart, planted it and slowly cultivated it into a ghostly plant with roots twisted deeply in his subconscious that was about to bear its first treacherous fruit of betrayal.

The root of the cause that forced his personality to twist and turn from the easily manipulated, sheltered child that would submit to every of the scientist's demands to the manipulative young man with a fondness for complicated, convoluted plans, unshackled from morality and what painted the world in shades of black and white was nothing else but his own surprisingly well-developed primal ability to adapt to situations and the negligent behaviour of the scientists towards it. Should they have foreseen that placing the otherwise kind, genuinely compassionate child in a cruel world ruled by fear and despair -the law of the survival of the fittest, torn in a struggle between humanity and the Majin- would have turned him into that kind of monster they would have opted to keep him inside for the rest of his life, never giving him the chance to learn anything besides what he could from his cell.

The change wasn't, however, immediate. For a long time Kyu hovered in the 'in-between' leaning and threatening to fall either way; into the darkness or into the light. When he succeeded in balancing in between the torn pieces of himself it was time to start thinking ahead, able to see infinite outcomes from his vantage point. Therefore he sat and thought each step of the road like a well-played game of chess. At last everything was in place and the best thing was that he wasn't a player nor a piece; he was the unaccounted variable.

The meticulously groomed exterior that would fit society's standards, the standing of a valiant, noble knight, his ways -ever beautiful- they all helped to keep him elevated to the place where he should have always been standing, ensuring that he would be able to continue existing there in the sense he should always be. One would never expect that underneath the surface, the surprisingly polite, soft-spoken intellectual that was Kyu had actually been turned into what he was; the lack of suspicion towards him quickly becoming his first milestone to stand upon. No one saw him reaching for the fruit he had grown himself, no one saw him reap it. No one understood or realized what was wrong until it was already too late.

When Kyu deemed it was about time to strike he made his way back to the facility where he grew up under the cover of making a routine visit to have his powers measured and see the people that brought him up. No more than an hour later there was no living soul left within the halls that resounded his soft footsteps. Having no need to feed on the hearts of the scientists Kyu only took a single heart, Quinn's heart, the heart of the person who brought him in the facility. He didn't really think about developing his powers further by doing so, only thought that maybe this was the best way to show his gratitude now, however limited it might have been; to allow him to live on through him. The fire he set to the building destroyed all evidence that might possibly point to him and he made it appear like he was simply the first to arrive on the spot. Such was the sorrow and pain that people read in the delicate features of his face that nobody dared suspect him. They were even deeply sorry that such a thing should happen and the fact he had more or less lost what could be considered his last remaining 'family' on this world. No one saw him smiling underneath the facade of pain. No one saw him eat the fruit he had claimed, all by himself.

Having the full luxury of choosing when and how to feed if he ever felt the urge and need to further his powers, Kyu returned to his otherwise quiet lifestyle of serving as a knight and being the pleasant person everyone knew and loved. Of course he never once looked at the rest of the world in the same way, the game of chess that was being played irresistibly intricate for him to pretend he could see nothing of it. As always he would be no part of it, but when he'd finally make his move he was sure to make the effects of his actions a lasting one.

-and so, I told you-

Möbius was Right

He couldn't remember if there had been something more to life besides the testing. He didn't mind terribly much either. The scientists were, for the most part, kind with him -save for the times they were abusive in the name of their research- but maybe it was simply because he would always cooperate without any opposition. And yet, he could never find the strength in him to get angry at them. There was nothing left for him before, hence why he couldn't remember it. There had always only been the chase, so whatever it was it couldn't be better than this.

At least now he had water and food to eat, clothes to wear and a roof over his head. There were even people that liked him and talked to him and would take care of him when he wasn't feeling alright.

The least he could do was help them in return and since this research was what was important to them then he didn't mind helping them.

He didn't have another reason to exist at the time.
He was only a child, after all.

If your World doesn't suit you...

He had always been hungry. He knew there was a craving in him that was dark and unacceptable; one that if left unchecked would grow into a raging wildfire and consume all that was dear to him. It had happened once before, when he flew out of control and even though he was still too small to remember it clearly he remembered running for his life. People didn't accept that kind of behavior, not even that state of being. The scientists called him a 'majin' and he knew that he wasn't human but he could see the skin stretched along pale fingers as they collapsed their weight along his palm and watch the thin legs dangling bellow him and notice no difference to how everyone else looked.

When he asked he was told that he was different on the inside only and that his outside was the same as every other's. His body was as human as the normal humans' was and yet he was different. And he couldn't understand and so he'd sit against the mirror and try to figure what was exactly that that made him him and set him apart from the rest.

Maybe it was because he didn't grow up in a normal environment -as much as anything can be considered 'normal'- that he had grown to be so curious, always seeking answers. Or maybe it was because of the scientists. They were seeking answers too, and somehow that predisposition had caught on? And he couldn't help but wonder if that's how a person was supposed to behave; contemplating endlessly about what they are and what they are supposed to be and what is it that make them different and why is it him being researched upon and not someone else and what good will come from it.

And then one day he was told to do something he didn't want to do, and that was to consume another's heart. He was told that this was what majin did and that it would make him stronger and that he shouldn't be afraid but all he could remember was being hunted down and refused to do it. And he wished, only so hard, to be normal, to be just like the humans. He wished, with all his heart, that he didn't have to consume that heart, that he didn't feel drawn to it just like the scientists said- and even when the deed was done he wish he didn't cry because they were expecting him to be something else -and he wasn't it, didn't want to be it- but all he could remember was fear and hiding and loneliness and pain.

And then the ache and the pain and the hunger and his dark desires all faded away and he was born anew.

Menger Sponge

"I want to go outside." it was a simple request but the first he had made in a very long while. As a matter of fact he couldn't remember voicing a request before. He wasn't sure why, maybe it was that the scientists didn't expect to hear requests from him, it was usually the other way around... or that maybe he was afraid that they wouldn't let him. And yet this time he went and said it; he said it, before dropping his head, ebony locks shielding eyes that were too bright and filled with hopes and longing, just like a child's asking a favour from its parent. The researcher was surprised but didn't tell him right away. She said that she could maybe ask her superior and that she might be able to convince him to let him outside for a little while under supervision. After all it was spring and the flowers were blossoming beautifully and the birds where singing and the sun was shining and it wasn't humane to keep all that from him.

The spring, the flowers, the birds and the sun. He knew what all these were, but he could only faintly recall them. They had been things outside his reality for far too long for him to have a vivid image of them. Things that for other people were considered mundane and a norm were all new and exciting to him all over again. And he wasn't sure if he should feel happy or sad about it so, for the time's being, he felt nothing.

-As infinite as hollow-

Fractal Verse

"Will you ever let me go?" it had been a while and he was allowed outside a lot more often as the scientists had found it enhanced the results from their research if they let him interact with the rest of the world. And now Kyu wanted more. He wanted to be allowed the chance to live again, after all he had been good and he hadn't felt that urge to consume others ever since he was forced to do it. He had wished to be normal for so long and now that he was...

And the head researcher looked at him before fixing his glasses and then back at one of his assistants and then down at his paper before smiling and saying "Why not?"

And he fell out of himself that way, as he practically jumped him as if he've been given the greatest gift in all the world and embraced the man who had kept him inside for all this time as he said 'thank you' for more times in a row that he could remember saying in his entire life.

A few things, one WOW. I really really love the set up you have, so unique. o u o Awesome job ! *gold stars your forehead*

For the most part you've covered all that I was going to crit you on, lol. Lets see... a few things would be for the sake of curiosity:

When he 'withdrawals' does he simply blank out or is there something special he thinks of to help him? On the Factal Verse section you have 'He wanted to be allowed the chance to live again, after all he had been good and he had to feel that urge to consume others ever since he was forced to do it. ' That's not making sense to me OTL did you mean 'he hadn't felt that urge to consume others ever since he was forced to do it.' Since he is supposed to not feel the urge to eat witch hearts anymore right? Unless your meaning he was good in the way that it wasn't his fault because they forced him to take the heart and its not like he wanted to so that should prove he is able to control himself at least to a point that would allow him to be outside. If the later then I understand and please ignore that lol <3

Cantor, can only communicate with Kyu and other people telepathically, however familiars can speak normally I believe, so is just a quirk to him then? OR a choice? I know I put in a bit about Shea's familiar like his own personality and little things for him, if that would be something you'd be interested in doing just to give a bit more detail about him since, he would be a big part of Kyu's life once he was acquired. Maybe even what he changes into since familiars have the ability to change into many items, including weapon or shields, to protect their owner. Or is it just that he has the wings and cannot change like a normal familiar into a weapon or shield? Since he 'doesn't appear to have any magical abilities?'

As for the special case thing everything looks ok to me, I couldn't see much of a problem with it but others will come and give more to this, I personally like the idea and approve, very good quest superb job <3

Thanks a lot for the crit, Cheekie~ <33
//runs around with a gold star on her forehead * u*/
I have a knack for coming up with all the weird ones >>

And that was timing fail on my part anyway xD;

When Kyu withdraws -which is usually a conscious defensive choice over conflict- he doesn't think of something in particular other than possibly wanting to pass up on it, I think? It's a habitual thing. It's something that he probably does less and less as time goes by.

Also I have no idea how I turned 'hadn't felt' to 'had to feel' when I was writing this. Glorious typo fail there. Orz It's fixed now~

And now for the interesting part~ |D I hadn't had time to flesh Cantor's details yet, if only because Omie told me that Knights don't normally get familiars to begin with and this more or less gave me an entirelly new concept to tamper with (as if I hadn't pushed the oddity far enough yet).

Cantor is not a familiar in the sense familiars are. He's more of a companion to Kyu, created and given to him by the Facility at some point as a limiter to his powers should they go out of hand substituting as his familiar. That is the precise reason Cantor can't transform, speak or use any sort of magic at all. At first he was one of the 'people' that Kyu trusted the most and even now finds some solace in confiding to him. Of course, being a limiter it also makes sense that Kyu locked him up someplace as soon as he had the chance to do that and it's only reasonable that he is going to be greatly involved in Kyu's sage quest whenever that happens. >> (If you haven't ran out screaming bloody murder already I suggest this is a good time to do that)
