Name: Tolin
Age: 15
Gender: male
Sexual Preference: bi, male preferred
Craft/Hall/Rank: Computers Hall, apprentice (now candidate)

Personality:

Optimistic and curious sometimes to the point of being annoying. Everything is good, and if it isn’t, then things will work out eventually, and then things will be good. If there’s anything he doesn’t recognize or understand, he’ll do his best to fix this situation: New people? Ask them questions! A strange plant? Poke it! Computers? Fiddle with them! An unfamiliar animal? Poke it too, unless it looks dangerous...then ask somebody before poking it.

He’s not socially inept, but when he gets excited about something new to see, hear, do, or learn, he’ll forget most niceties for a while, if not kept in check. As such, his superiors in the crafthall constantly accused him of being incredibly immature, even if that wasn’t truly the case.

Tolin’s optimism also leads him to be almost perpetually cheerful, giving him an air of being both dumb and oblivious at times, although this is not really the case. He is happy, true, but he pays attention, listens, and wishes to know about everything, therefore absolutely cannot be oblivious. Dumb...is a matter of debate. Certainly, he gathers a lot of random knowledge about stuff, both from talking to people and more direct approaches involving prodding and pulling things apart. At the same time, though, he’s very reckless when it comes to these things. It’s a small wonder he’s never been seriously harmed up to this point.

History:

Tolin was essentially born into the computers crafthall. That’s where his parents resided, and that’s where he’s always been, except for a turn in which he’d convinced his father to let him stay with some relatives.

As family histories go, his is fairly boring--just a couple of people who have a mix of crafters & holders in their ancestry. No Lord Holders, no Master Crafters, just people. As far as he’s aware, he has no relatives who are or were dragon riders, although such a thing is not impossible if one were to look back far enough--but when one isn’t a noble, that rarely happens.

He has two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother, each two years different from his age. He doesn’t really get along with his sister, she thinks he asks way too many questions, and his younger brother considers him weird, but still likes to ask *him* questions, because Tolin usually knows the answers. He makes an excellent resource for finishing one’s ‘research’ assignments in school.

When he was 12, Tolin went to live with his uncle, who lives on the southern continent and works with dolphins. He had heard about this and very much wanted to see what it was like, so he convinced his parents to let him go there for a while. The experience was an exciting one for him...going from spending long hours fiddling with ancient computers that sometimes were a wonder to even work at all to spending long hours working with dolphins was quite the switch. He thoroughly enjoyed this, but eventually had to go back home, and resume his apprenticeship.

His 15th birthday rolled around just days after word of thread falling again reached the telegraph room--when he was assigned to sit and record messages dutifully. In all honesty, he thought it was a joke, and was, in fact, accused of making things up when he delivered the message (after confirming that is indeed what the message was) to the masters of the crafthall.

Things were a blur for a while, but eventually things seemed to be getting organized again. The holders and craftsmen were all working flat out all the time to ensure their homes were adequately protected. Messenger dragonriders seemed to be more frequent...somebody was apparently worried their precious telegraphs, old as they were, would not survive threadfall. It was one of these riders, a scrawny looking rider, that essentially “searched” him, although entirely by accident.

There had been a few times previously that Tolin had seen various dragons, although rarely up close, as they weren’t around very long. But this one, a green one that seemed huge to him, but its rider assured him was only about average sized for a green. Tolin marveled at the dragon for longer than other craftsmen and holders (mostly minors) that came to oggle, and he asked numerous questions about how it flies, how it teleports, how he commands it, what he does, and numerous other slightly inane questions. That apparently led to him being singled out not long later to be a candidate dragon rider...which he accepted readily. It was another opportunity to experience something new! (Although the...permanency of being a dragon rider was not really something that occurred to him, even though he was told.)

Talents:

Gathering information
Being cheerful
